So I added some funky new flairs you can use to differentiate your posts Posted: 25 Feb 2021 06:06 AM PST I noticed nobody was using the old flairs, is that because, oh wait they were disabled! I'm not sure how that happened, honest. Apologies and fixed! <slow clap pls> If anyone has suggestions for more, please leave a comment. Maybe "hardware/drivers" or something like that? And, should I rename some of them? All input welcome. X-ray Tux here, BTW. :) [link] [comments] |

Installing Ubuntu on Windows Virtual PC Posted: 25 Feb 2021 02:07 PM PST Hi, I'm trying to install Ubuntu on Microsoft Virtual PC, because I need it to run a particular Python package, which is only compatible with Linux/Ubuntu - I'm using Windows 7. I've been following the guide here (almost identically here). Attempted solutions; * I acpi=off * noacpi * nomodeset, both from the F6 menu or by placing it in front of "quiet splash" in the command line. * Tried both options with [Safe Graphics], as advised here I've searched around a bit, but none of the listed solutions I've found have helped. GNU/Linux Distro on MacBook Air Posted: 25 Feb 2021 09:24 AM PST Hey there! I am new to the GNU/Linux world and have a very basic question: how would I install a GNU/Linux distro on my 2017 MacBook Air? Instructional YouTube videos, websites, etc. would be appreciated! Thank you so much! [link] [comments] |
Is Brave browser good on Linux? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 11:41 AM PST Hello folks I'm currently using firefox and chromium as my daily drivers, chromium for the mails, whereas firefox for browsing. Should I really make the switch to brave as its already based on chromium? I like the crypto part but is it really worth the attention? What you guys using and is brave worth the hype? Thanks [link] [comments] |
How do I customize Linux ISO to just show me a little message when booting to the ISO? (NO GUI) Posted: 25 Feb 2021 11:23 AM PST Hello. I want to customize Linux ISO to show me a little message without GUI when booting to the ISO. How can I do it? I am not meaning that I have to install it first, just to modify the ISO file so it can display my own custom message with dark background without GUI. HOW CAN I DO IT? You may have to tell me specifically how do I do it and what I need. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu 20.04 - Google Drive - rclone? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 10:53 AM PST Does rclone have its own GUI or do you need to install the rclone browser, too? [link] [comments] |
Is a great idea to install instances of MS SQL Server using Linux? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 06:31 AM PST I want to do replication between 2 instances in my production environment for failover, but how I suppose to do the administration between Windows and Linux? Microsoft recommend to use AD authentication, but if I install a instance in Linux I need to use "sa" user authentication instead of AD authentication. To do AD authentication in Linux I would need to configure LDAP and samba server in Linux, it's to much thing to configure, and I not sure if it will work, I am trying to do this in lab. Anyone had experience doing that, it worth the time or should I pay for another MS Windows Server license? [link] [comments] |

I have a really silly question please answer Posted: 25 Feb 2021 09:53 AM PST okay everyone I have been asking this to a lot of people but haven't been able to get a clear answer So here it goes My laptop has 512gb SSD and 8GB ram, I also have a 64GB Flash drive, so I am thinking about installing ubuntu on my flash drive however I have one major question which as I said hasn't been answered yet Suppose I download a video when I am on ubuntu, and lets say it is 2GB, I wanted to know will the video worth 2GB take space in 512GB SSD or 64GB Flash drive??? If it will take space in my flash drive can I just use 256GB Flash drive and all the software's and files I install when I use ubuntu be stored in that 256GB flash drive and thereby not taking space in my 512gb SSD Thanks everyone [link] [comments] |
cannot format partition as ext4 - issue on multiple distros Posted: 25 Feb 2021 01:39 PM PST I've tried installing 4 distros now: Kali, Manjaro, Arch and Fedora. None of them install, displaying this as the issue. I'm confident this is a hardware issue, but is there any way to fix it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2021 09:41 AM PST Hey guys! I'm running Manjaro Linux (c86_64) with the 5.10.2-2-MANJARO kernel. It's a laptop with a standard HDD, intel integrated graphics (UHD 620) and an intel i5-8250U cpu. I can't seem to get 2160p video to play on VLC, though. It constantly stutters, buffers, and/or outright freezes. I'm trying to get it to play UHD video so I can watch it on my new tv, but like I said, it isn't working. Anything you guys can think of that could be causing this? I'd appreciate any help I can get! [link] [comments] |
Choppy/laggy cursor when i use touchpad Posted: 25 Feb 2021 06:22 AM PST Im on arch linux with fully updated system, Everytime i booted my laptop the cursor is laggy with delayed output. After a bit of googling, i found a temporary solution, which is to do "sudo systemctl suspend"/suspend the session. (I have tried other solution in the link but none worked) Then the cursor is fine w/o lag. However after a reboot the lag comes back. The lag doesn't happen when i use a mouse so I'm sure it is not memory problem. [link] [comments] |
Extremely slow ethernet connection Posted: 25 Feb 2021 08:31 AM PST Hi everyone, after deciding to install Linux again, I've into some issues.. Initially the ethernet connection didn't work at all, as I posted here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/lq21m8/no_network_connection_on_fedora_33/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 It is worth noting that the same issue occurs if I boot from an Arch live media. However, after rebooting a few times I now have a connection, but an extremely slow one (Takes minutes to load webpages). I am on Fedora 33, and the network connection has previously worked fine on Fedora 32 (and other distros). This is the output of running And here is [link] [comments] |

Trying to figure out if switching to Linux from Windows is a worthwhile process. Posted: 25 Feb 2021 07:48 AM PST Since doing my masters degree I have come across how widely used Linux can be as on OS and it's gotten me wondering if I should try to develop some skills and knowledge around working in Linux. I don't really have any command-line expertise, but it's a skill I casually try to develop by opening files and just navigating my system. I am going to be entering a PhD program shortly, so I have time to develop Linux as a skill over the next 4-5 years, but I am wondering if there is really any point to doing it? FWIW I do some computational work in Python primarily and might move over to the Julia language, so most of my 'work' is primarily in simulating equations and building models. So if I were to switch to Linux from Windows would there be any tangible benefits that I might get in computation speed? Ease of use? What perks am I not aware of and for those that have made the switch (and are not in computer science), how did it help your workflow or work at all? [link] [comments] |
Just bought an Ethernet cable , should it work out of the box with Ubuntu or I need to configure? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 11:28 AM PST I googling and found some pages that says that it should just work, and others that offer a tutorial. Should I try the tutorials? I don't really want to mess with networking commands unless I really have too. thank you everyone for any kind of help or guidance. This is what my ifconfig command shows in the terminal: :~$ ifconfig enxa0cec8d7912a: flags=4099<UP,BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 ether a0:ce:c8:d7:91:2a txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet) RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B) TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0 lo: flags=73<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING> mtu 65536 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 scopeid 0x10<host> loop txqueuelen 1000 (Local Loopback) RX packets 1004 bytes 78300 (78.3 KB) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 1004 bytes 78300 (78.3 KB) TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0 images of the gui setting s below: https://i.imgur.com/PNfskDQ.png [link] [comments] |
XFCE4- trying to assign a hotkey to open alsamixer in xfce4 Posted: 25 Feb 2021 11:14 AM PST Really stupid noob question, but I've found out how to make a desktop shortcut that automatically opens alsamixer in urxvt, however XFCE4 doesn't let me assign hotkeys to them. I have also made .sh files that I can assign hotkeys to, however I cannot for the life of me get them to run. Not as in, I can't get permission to run it, but it will run and do nothing. The terminal won't even come up. I have given it executable permissions. For whatever reason I can't find anything from my searches on how to do this. [link] [comments] |
Run a command every time a specific other command is run Posted: 25 Feb 2021 11:04 AM PST I am trying to make it so that every time a particular command is run, for example another command is executed before that one gets run, for example These are not necessarily the commands I'd use, but I want the code to be adaptable to any two commands I'm at a loss for how to accomplish this, but my brain is fried from three days of trying to troubleshoot another issue so I'm outsourcing. Any help or suggestions very much appreciated Phil [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2021 10:39 AM PST I had 2 drives: SSD with Windows 10 and HDD with Manjaro. Grub was set up on the HDD and it was working yesterday but when I turned my PC on today, grub rescue came up saying unknown device. My HDD isn't even spinning up, no activity whatsoever. Checked cables, nothing. I guess it finally died after 11+ years. Anyways, I'm writing this from a Linux Mint bootable USB and want to fix grub but don't know how: every article and post I found said to mount the Linux drive/reinstall grub on /boot/grub but I only have an NTFS drive. Can I somehow fix grub, or remove it and restore the Windows boot drive or do I have to use a Windows live usb and run the repair tool there? Any help is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2021 10:32 AM PST I got go version go1.15.8 linux/amd64 and I know that there is a newer version but when I do apt upgrade golang I first get the answer, that it's the newest version and at the end I get The following packages have unmet dependencies: Ruby-http-parser.rb : Conflicts : ruby-http-parser but 1.2.1-4+b1 is to be installed E: Broken packages What is that?
