What is going on with Redshift? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 01:55 PM PST I downloaded it but it won't turn on despite the fact that it's enabled. Using Debian [link] [comments] |
How do I monitor file copying or moving progress from the GUI or command line? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:03 AM PST I'm fairly new to Linux and I'm trying to add some files but have no idea of how I can tell what percentage of my files were copied, if any and what the ETA is to finish the copying or moving. This is so very easy in Windows since it happens automatically but in Linux I guess I need to install something or is it that I'm out of luck? If it helps at all I'm using POP OS although I wasn't a fan of the gnome desktop I do like the automatically tiling windows and overall look of the OS. [link] [comments] |
How to Remove Unfinished Wine from Linux? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 02:13 PM PST I attempted to install Wine through the Debian Terminal on my Chromebook, and I seem to hit a wall where it is not pulling the correct files to finish installation. I have tried to REMOVE the Wine directories from my computer, but because the Install did not finish, the commands I am able to find are not working. I keep getting back "XXXX is not installed, so not removed". HOWEVER, whenever I try to run another command, I get errors about unmet dependencies. Which to my novice mind, means that there is something going on in the background with Wine still trying to run. Any recommendations on how to just clear out everything Wine related? I can't install protonVPN for linux Posted: 27 Feb 2021 10:25 AM PST I'm trying to install ProtonVPN and following the installation instructions here. I copy-pasted all the command lines and everything worked as expected until I got to the last command line. It says "E: unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages". My OS is Ubuntu 20.04 I'm also booting linux from a live USB, so it's not installed directly onto my computer. Could this be a problem or should I be able to install programs on a live USB? I face the issue with usr/local/bin/package and usr/bin/package a lot! Posted: 27 Feb 2021 02:10 PM PST Whenever I try to install a package I run into this issue, the package is installed on the user or root and I try to look for it the other way around, how do I fix this issue? right now I am trying to install youtube-dl and when I try to use it, I run into this again, I use ubuntu 20.04 How do I fix this issue for now and for ever, what am I missing while installing packages, I know that I could apt-get install or pip install and we use pip when the package is written in Python. By the way I installed the youtube-dl package using it's a suprise to me because I never used this snap thing and this seems to be the only thing working for ubuntu 20.04 without running into any issues. So, also what is this snap thingy besides pip and apt-get? Thank you for reading [link] [comments] |
What is the easiest (free) way to create a vpn connection on Ubuntu? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 01:31 PM PST So currently I'm running Ubuntu on a live USB because there's not enough space on the hard drive to install another operating system. Whenever I turn my computer off and back on, anything I install on the live USB is gone. I've been trying to install protonVPN and have been having troubles with it, but whenever I turn my computer off and restart ubuntu, all my hard work and effort is gone. Is there a fast and easy way to set up a VPN without setting up and installing a bunch of stuff? Edit: and also is there a way to set your live USB so it actually saves downloaded files? Installing Pop! Os on a Chromebook, what is best practice for formating and allocating partitions? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 01:07 PM PST I have 15Gb of SSD space, there seems to be a 10 GB and two 2GB ext4 partitions called STATE, ROOT-A, and ROOT-B respectively, along with other small stuff (unallocated, kernel etc) Do I just install in the 10GB called STATE or do I need to install in a ROOT? Update : I just made one 'big' 15GB Partion and formated as ext4 as the main drive. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to eject a USB from the command line (I powered down). Edit 2: trying to figure out the boot menu... The learning curve begins... [link] [comments] |
My LM install is convinced that my win10 install is an external drive. Is it safe to unmount it? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:36 AM PST I am dualbooting win10 and linux mint 20.1. Linux thinks that the windows install is some kind of external drive and whenever I try to write to external drive using my 3d slicer (software for 3d printer) it attempts to write to the "c:" drive. Will unmounting it in linux affect GRUB's and the UEFI's ability to boot from it? [link] [comments] |
Please help me upgrade kernel on Xubuntu! Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:58 AM PST Hi everyone! I am running Xubuntu on my T14 AMD and I seem to be having random errors all the time even on freshly installed groovy gorilla 20.10. I've heard that the t14 has problems with kernels under 5.9 so I believe this would resolve a lot of my issues. Help me resolve this issue pls! :,) Also. What are some things you recommend downloading right away on fresh install? Any applications or packages? Give me some good stuff to try out! :D [link] [comments] |

How to disable LUKS password entry asterisks when using Plymouth on debian? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 10:40 AM PST So I have debian with disk encryption, and during booting the password can be seen as asterisks when entering it. And I want to disable that. This can be "fixed" by uninstalling plymouth, but then you don't have a boot animation and modesetting doesn't happen until after root is mounted. So I want to keep plymouth, but simply disable the asteriks. However apparently this isn't really possible: https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/8495 and http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=143492 However the systemd github issue claims that you can temporarily disable it by hitting the TAB or BACKSPACE key, however that doesn't work for me, it just adds an extra charachter/asterisk. So how do I atleast make that work? And apparently systemd-ask-password does all of this promting, however I can't figure out where the hell is it's config in debian, and where even is the thing that setups the encryption (it isn't in grub kernel params). Burning and accessing encrypted file container on CDR / DVDR Posted: 27 Feb 2021 03:03 AM PST Hi Guys, n00b here. I'm trying to burn some sensitive data to CDR / DVDR. I understand the way to do this is to create an encyrpted file container in which to save the sensitive data and then to burn this to a disc. As a n00b, I'm familiar with command line but very very much a beginner. I researched this a bit but could not find clear instructions. Next I came across ZuluCrypt / ZuluMount (whilst yes I would love to acheive this via command line, at the end of the day I just need to achieve the goal). I've managed to create an encrypted file container with ZuluCrypt and successfully mount and access the files with ZuluMount. The problem I have is when I burn the file container to a CDR I cannot mount / open it from the CDR. On the GUI file manager the encrypted container on the CDR shows a padlock. Any ideas how I can achieve my goal? Happy to look at command line with clear instructions, otherwise hoping someone can help with Zulu... one theory I have, is it's something to do with root privaleges? I know how to enable root in terminal (sudo) how do I do that in GUI? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
What does it mean to copy a file to ~/.config/alacritty/alacritty.yml Posted: 27 Feb 2021 09:50 AM PST Hi everyone! I'm trying to add a configuration file for Alacritty but I can't figure out how. Every source says I need to copy a config file to ~/.config/alacritty/alacritty.yml but I'm a total n00b and have no idea how to do that. Any advice is appreciated! (I'm using Ubuntu by the way.) Posted: 27 Feb 2021 09:03 AM PST Second question today, hopefully someone can help. I understand with LUKS encryption it's wise to back-up the header in case of corruption issues and possibly forgotten passphrases... however, how to save this file / data? Surely this becomes the weak link... If you save it in a LUKS encrypted container you would then need to back-up that header also? What does everyone do? [link] [comments] |
Hmmm yes, I'm comming back to linux baby (but I need suggestions) Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:39 AM PST Ok, ok, I started using Windows a little while ago because I wanted to play with excel, power point and those things exclusive to windows, but my USB stick burned and my computer doesn't have a DVD / CD input, so I was stuck in windows (yes, I was stupid because I could have just installed windows on a VM, but I didn't). Whatever, I bought a USB stick and I'm comming back to linux, but I want some suggestions Before I started using windows I was using Ubuntu, and before Ubuntu I used KDE plasma, but now I want something different, I want something beautiful but simple, I don't want to install and configure everything from scratch, which Linux distro should I use? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 07:56 AM PST so in my version of vi, p and P are pasting below and above the current line, so I tried to query how to paste on the current line on my favourite search engine, and im finding conflicting tutorials some of them say p and P paste below and above the current, like whats happening when I try but other tutorials say p and P paste before and after the cursor position and another problem im facing is that both changing the word/line (cw/cc) or deleting the word/line (dw/dd) copy the text to the buffer, so I cant figure out how to delete a line without writing over what I have yanked [link] [comments] |
What window manager should start with? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 07:48 AM PST I just recently got into Linux and while I have loved the fresh new look of GNOME compared to Windows 10, I have started hearing about these things called window managers. As far as I understand its a way to explicitly manage windows efficiently and nothing else. You wouldn't get stuff like volume controls and widgets. On searching up, I found that there were a ton of them. The ones I can list of my head are i3wm, bspwm, awesome wm (heavy name tho) and xmonad. But I'm not quite sure which one to use. What window manager would you recommend for a beginner? [link] [comments] |

[Arch] No bootable device found on Acer Laptop Posted: 27 Feb 2021 07:06 AM PST Hello, I switched to linux a little over a week ago and I very much like it so far , although I have run into a problem 3 time so far where my laptop cannot find a bootable device, I checked BIOS and there are no devices ( the installation usb stick I use does appear when plugged in ) - I usually fix this issue by just doing a fresh install but this time I had quite a lot of config and college work done as well as PASS set up , so I would prefer to not have to do it again :) This is the video tutorial I used : Tutorial ( as well as some networking stuff from the wiki) if it means anything the problem occurred after I woke up this morning after I used the laptop mobile and shut it down using the shutdown now command. My laptop is a Acer swift 3 with a ryzen 3500u ( from memory ) in BIOS my boot device was named a null string when it was working - i tried to change it but couldn't figure it out any help would be appreciated! thanks :) ps. sorry for bad formatting i'm on my phone for obvious reasons haha [link] [comments] |
Trying to understand what is going on with my install Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:59 AM PST I am attempting to test out this automatic ripping machine but encountering issues during the install. I am following the "Install" section from the git page, but when I get into setting up and installing the repos I consistently run into the same issue: for the "NumOnly" line I keep getting the failure echo and do not understand why. This command is a little foreign to me and I am not totally sure what I am trying to do with it so I struggle to know how to assess what is going on. If I just try to skip over it and go to the next couple of commands, the update goes fine, but the install of the makemkv repos doesn't seem to do what it is supposed to. What am I missing here?
