| Water spilt on laptop , need advice Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:49 AM PST While I was using the laptop , spilt some water on it , I immediately tried to turn it out took out the power cable turned it upside down and kept it under a fan, later I wiped off excess water and removed the back cover and took out the battery . I recently bought a Dell XPS 15Z (2012) laptop for a relatively small sum of money because of cosmetic issues (chrome strip broken etc) but otherwise running fine. The only thing noted as failed/dead/useless was the battery. 2012 system no worries £45 and 20 minutes and it will be all running fine. So it arrives and sure as stated the battery does not charge. Dell quickset says "cannot communicate with battery" however the BIOS says the Batterys health is good. So I download HWMonitor and it stated the battery was present with 34% wear and running at 8.8V. Obviously the battery is defective because it's suppose to be 11.16v or something. Skip to tonight. I plugged in the charger and bam error. Charge not recognized... stupid Dell nonsense. So I slap it and unplug/replug, however this time no error. Also no battery error flashing (the 4 Amber 1 white) just a solid white light. Wooooow me thinks. I login and Dell quickset says it is charging the battery.. HWMonitor shows 112Mah (out of the 46568Mah to full charge) it takes roughly 25 minutes to get to 780Mah and then it starts charging faster.. It's now almost fully charged and I have yanked the cable out and back in and it appears to be running flawlessly. With strangely a good battery life for an old laptop. So I was wondering if anyone else experienced anything similar? Is it truly defective and going to be intermittent or is it a case of poor long term storage and the battery when into protection mode because the voltage was too low? Any answers would be awesome. I have reservations about buying through VIPOutlet because there are almost entirely negative reviews on review sites, and a few reviews about a great experience. But the good reviews are encouraging, and the prices for the specs and condition of the device are really great. What's your experience buying from VIPOutlet? Even better, if you've bought the Gateway laptop from VIPOutlet recently, how did that work out? Did you get the cheaper option (but in "grade A" / "like new" / similar condition)? | Ok, I'm done with this, need advice. Posted: 27 Feb 2021 07:33 AM PST This is really getting on my nerves, I cannot stand it anymore. I have a laptop which I know it's not the best (8 GB RAM, GTX 1050, Intel Core i5 9th Gen, Windows 10) but man, with that specs I was expecting at least something. For about three months from now I've been experienced REALLY LOW performance issues which make, among other things, restarting or turning it on 30 minutes or less before online class a russian roulette, because I don't know if it will take 10, 20 or an hour to completely initialize. It really feels (and I'm not exaggerating) like my dad's older than me computer, in fact, I think that one has better performance than mine. I already did a malwarebytes scan, and found nothing. I will be upgrading to an SSD and at least 16 GB RAM, after making a hard reset. Do you think this will solve it, or my whole device might be corrupted? | Another work/light gaming suggestion request, with some caveats Posted: 27 Feb 2021 09:03 AM PST Hello, r/laptops! As in the title, I am looking to change my laptop - I have an old 15" HP Pavillion that I bought for university and gaming in 2015, and not only it's showing its age, it's really not functional for what I need it now. I usually work from an iPad when I'm not at home, but in the coming months I will have to bounce around two different cities for work, and I will probably need a laptop for things I can't do well (or at all) on an iPad. I'm a researcher and also teach university courses, so right now I'm doing remote work, but (in addition to traveling for research) I'll probably have to teach in "blended" form (me and some students from class, others remotely). This is one of the main problems: my old laptop is not just unreliable, but also very heavy and as such hardly portable, and teaching blended isn't something I can do from a tablet. So, the main point would be portability. I was thinking of limiting myself to 13" and 14" laptops. Something I can easily take on a train without breaking my back. Good battery life is obviously a bonus, should I need to work on the go, but nothing exceptional. On the gaming side, when I say light I mean light. Most of the games I play run on a 6-year-old laptop with a GeForce 840M. Mainly older games and indie stuff to pass the time, and some multiplayer game to do something long distance with my friends when we can (right now it's Rocket League, and it's never anything much more demanding than that). Looking around, I found the Asus ZenBook 14 which seems to be very close to what I need. Light, small, dedicated GPU but nothing fancy (MX350), relatively cheap (around 800 Euros). Another one that seems interesting is the Huawei Matebook 14 (2020 edition): similar specs, same GPU, also thin and light. They both seem to have decent reviews. Are they any good? Is there something better along those lines? Even if it's a bit higher in price, it's not a problem - something around the 1000-1100 euros is still feasible, if it's going to last longer. I even considered the new M1 Macbook Air - since I work a lot from my iPad, a Macbook would make a lot of things easier. Honestly, the main thing that's stopping me is the gaming part. As stupid as it may seem, it's the only thing I can do with my old friends in these pandemic times, and I'd hate to lose that, or force everyone else to find some other game natively compatible with macOS.
