Laptop for programming, business, college and very light gaming?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 12:39 AM PST

    Hey guys!

I want to ditch my desktop PC completely. Given my current situation and interests, it feels like the best option.

I want to buy a laptop for programming, business and college purposes mainly, but sometimes I'd do some very light gaming on it (mainly Minecraft). I say very light, because my main gaming platform is my Xbox.

A very important feature would be having an HDMI and a thunderbolt (or mini displayport) port, because I'd use the laptop connected to two external monitors quite often.

Given these, I'm looking at two laptops:

    1. Acer Swift 3 SF314 (Ryzen 7 4700U, 16GB Ram and 512GB SSD) for 910 euros
    2. Asus ROG Strix G512LI (i5 10300H, 1650Ti, 8GB Ram and 512GB SSD) for 880 euros

I'd upgrade the second option's memory to 16GB.

Which laptop would you choose? Do you have any other recommendations?

I'll fill out the form too:

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I live in Hungary, so I'd buy it here. Around 300.000 forints.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I'm a little worried about gaming laptops being huge, but I wouldn't use the machine during travel. Build quality is not as important for me as performance. For the battery life: it would be good if the laptop could work for 3-4 hours from the battery. As I've read, both of the laptops I'm looking at meet my battery requirements.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I explained it in the section above.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      From 14" to 15.6".
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Light video and photo editing: Premiere Pro, Photoshop and Lightroom. Very light gaming: mainly Minecraft and old titles like the original warcraft 3.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I explained it in the section above.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      It should be reliable.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
A very important feature would be having an HDMI and a thunderbolt (or mini displayport) port, because I'd use the laptop connected to two external monitors quite often.

Gaming and business, US $2000. Must have by the end of March

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:35 PM PST

So, this is attempt number two. I didn't pull the trigger on anything last time, decided to see what post E3 would look like. I'm in the market for a gaming laptop that can double for work, in the US, with a budget up to 2k (I could push a couple hundred more if I /really/ needed to). I've been looking around at MSI offerings, Alienware (overpriced, the Dell warranty is good, but battery life is shit), the Razer 15 inchers are getting decent reviews but I know they've got a history of issues with build quality. Lenovo seems to get recommended a lot by affiliate people answering requests on here. Haven't looked into Acer yet. Asus doesn't appear to make anything with a webcam built in, which is a dealbreaker for me.
Timeline is starting to be a crunch. I have to have it by the end of March, and honestly the sooner the better.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
2000 US, could flex that a bit
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, build quality, battery life, form. I'll be plugged in for gaming, but I'd really like something I can run a bit for work without having to be at an outlet all the time.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I'd prefer to stay at or under 6 lbs
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15-16", just for portability reasons
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming: FFXIV, SWTOR, would prefer it to flex to some other recent titles like Cyberpunk. Must also be strong and capable for video conferencing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
FFXIV, SWTOR at 60 FPS or better
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Must have a webcam, which seems to eliminate ASUS offerings. Good keyboard is important too.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Timeline: Have to have it in hand by the end of March.

[US] 17", good performance even with weak wifi signal for programming and content creation

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 03:16 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I'm looking for the best bang for the buck more so than a good purchase price
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I need a workhorse. I need a pickup truck with performance, quality and reliability. I don't care about 2-in-1, touch screens or super fast video cards. I don't think I need an i9 chip or a gaming computer even though I really care about performance. I do care about RAM, speed and storage and inputs.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
-not so much. I want a solid bottom so when I type with it on my lap, it still feels solid and responsive, not spongy.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
17" lets me have several windows open. This is a hard requirement.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-inkscape, mostly I just need to have several things open at once and running at once.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      -no gaming needs
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-problems I've had in the past are weak antennas so I can't work when wifi is not strong. Also, with the 17" sometimes the power is barely enough so that you are replacing the battery or cord all the time. Sometimes they are so light, that the keyboard isn't easy to use unless it is on a table. So I do care about a good keyboard. And I like all the usual input ports you might be on a desktop.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • Wish I knew more about quality differences in general between manufacturers. In the past I've found HP and Asus tend to have weak antennas, and Dell handles a weak signal well but uses batteries that really should be powering only smaller laptops. But things might be different.

    Razer vs MSI

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:11 PM PST

I am a 4th year architecture student going into the profession. I run a lot of Rhino, 3D modeling, rendering, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and all those programs. I do not do any gaming.

    I am looking at:

Razer Blade 15 Advanced Edition - GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card - intel i7 10th gen processor - 32GB RAM

    Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition - Quadro RTX 5000 - intel i7 10th gen processor - 32 GB RAM

    MSI WS66 - Quadro RTX 5000 - intel i9 10th gen processor - 64 GB RAM

The GeForce RTX 3080 is new (and more powerful?). The Quadro RTX 5000 is older, but my understanding is that it's somehow more suited for these programs.

Which would be the best for my purposes? They're all about the same size, weight and price. Would it be more worthwhile to wait until the next gen comes out of the Razer Studio/MSI?

Getting a Late 2019 Razer Blade Steath W/ GTX 1650 for Architecture/Graphic Design Program

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 03:07 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

So I'm about to start my architecture/graphic design program for university and I need to get a laptop. I found a second hand 2019 Razer Blade Steath. Ideally I would be doing 3D modelling (Rhino 7) and decently colour accurate work for the design part. I was wondering if you'd think that this laptop could handle these tasks?

    Specs: I7-1065G7 1650 Max Q 16 GB RAM 512 SSD 1080p 60hz

    Cheers!

Good build quality work laptop with best "deal" in any major city in the world. Budget $1000 but very flexible. Trackpad/keyboard critically important.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 01:33 AM PST

I'm in the market for a work laptop that can handle large number of applications open and be used for some gaming. Budget is around US$1000 but I am flexible as long as I am getting value for money. Games I play are decades old. My most often played game is Civilization 3. However, I would like to be able to play skyrim on high setting with a decent refresh rate because I go through phases where I play those games.

I am currently in Pakistan but will be importing the laptop so unique thing about me is that I can buy from Australia, UK, US, or Dubai, wherever I get the best deal from. Ignore whether they ship to Pakistan or not. All I need is the best possible value for money deal.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
1000 US, could flex that a lot
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality, Performance, battery life, form. I have 0 interest in looks. However, build quality is of utmost importance to me. I need a very good keyboard and trackpad. Around 4 hrs of battery life (or more) would be super awesome.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
By far, the laptop will rest on my chest while I lay on my bed. It shouldn't be too big but as long as build quality is good, weight is not a big issue.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14-16"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming: Civilization 3. Should be able to play skyrim on high setting (without mods). Should be able to play more recent games, though low settings is fine.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Civilization 3. Should be able to play skyrim on high setting (without mods). Should be able to play more recent games, though low settings is fine.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard and trackpad are deal breakers. I need the absolute best possible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Mostly will be using it to type.

do all Budget gaming laptops have bad display specs?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 09:25 PM PST

I've been shopping around for gaming laptops under $1000 CA, I've come across a few good deals on refurbished laptops, specifically the Acer Nitro 5 and this Asus Rog Stix (https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/asus-rog-strix-g15-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-10300h-512gb-ssd-8gb-ram-geforce-gtx-1650-ti-open-box/14763862).

Reading the reviews and benchmarks, it seems like all these models have some issues with their screen displays. All have sRBG of around 60%, some are only 60hz (like the cheapest Nitros), and many seem to have below average brightness. My question is, for someone who has had a cheap HP Pavillion since 2015, and is not too picky about colours being perfect, will these issues seriously affect the gaming experience? I want to play open world games like GTA V, RDR 2, Fallout 4, and also some newer FPS.

Any advice or insight is much appreciated. I'm tempted to just go for that ROG as it seems to be a really good deal. Only thing holding me back is the sRBG of ~60%.

    I need a laptop suggestion

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 12:32 AM PST

Hi, I'm about to buy a laptop and I'm searching for some good quality one for my exigencies. My budget is around 1000-1100€ (1200-1300$) and since I will have to carry it on my backpack for long distances daily, the lightest the better.

Some desired specs: RAM 16 GB At least 512 GB SSD

I will mainly use it for studying (and programming), but if there's an option to have a dedicated graphic card for gaming would be great (at least to support shaders for Minecraft, no big deal), but not really needed.

For now I've found a MSI Modern 15 A10M-274IT which is great (unless for the RAM) but I want to see if I'm missing something.

Thanks in advance to all of you who respond.

Looking for a decent laptop for about TWD 35000 (Taiwan)

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:17 PM PST

Hello, I really know nothing much about computer well, and figured I will take a shot here. I have this ASUS X550C that I purchased back in 2013 for use in high school. It has served me well throughout the years, but for past year, the laptop will freeze for no reason (sometimes when moving its position), not connecting to Wi-Fi, etc. I do played some games so I uninstalled them thinking they were the reason. But the problems persisted, and I thought it may be about time I upgrade it to a new laptop.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
About TWD 35000 (Taiwan) or USD 1250 approximately after conversion.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      New please.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, build quality, battery life, form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Nothing too heavy.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Nothing bigger than 14 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I do play several games, such as Skryim, Conan Exile and LoL. I would like the new laptop to handle additional resource intensive games that I might purchase in the future.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
For the games mentioned above, anything decent will do in terms of settings and FPS.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality I suppose. I would be using a USB keyboard for gaming.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I guess I am looking for a reliable laptop that will last long (about 8 years ) and can handle casual gaming. It will be great if you can point to me the specific model or brand of the laptop. I apologize in advance if I am not using the correct terminology.

Looking for a 2-in-1 for general productivity, $500-700 range, US

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 12:02 AM PST

I've been shopping around for a 2-in-1 for a month or two so I can get a workspace going for myself that's less location restricted than my tower (and no games to distract). I've narrowed it down to either HP or Dell as options in my budget range.

I'm running into two problems, though:

    1) I haven't actively kept track of who makes what outside of established names, so I don't know if I'm missing a new company that's just as good (or better), and

    2) I don't know if either HP or Dell are worth bothering with because of that. I didn't have any problems with HP when I had a Compaq laptop (10+ years ago) and I haven't used anything Dell in even longer (and they weren't known for quality at the time), so it's a tossup for me which would be the better investment.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Looking in the $500-700 range (USD), but can't go much more than that (maybe $750) simply for budget reasons.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I've never had a problem with any refurb tech I've gotten in the past, so if it's an option, sure.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

2-in-1, since I'm after portable utility and being able to use a pen/stylus. I'm not expecting all day battery life, so as long as I can get 4-6 hours out of it, it's fine.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I won't be traveling with it, so weight/size isn't an issue.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I'd prefer 15.6", but will go for 14" if that's what's available. Anything smaller than that is in the way-too-small territory.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

This is primarily going to be used for writing (LibreOffice, Scrivener, NP++), web use, flow charts, watching video, possibly basic Photoshop use, and other general productivity stuff. Nothing I'm going to need top-end CPU/GPU for. I would prefer new(ish) for the CPU/GPU just to minimize the future potential of running into programs not running because they don't support the hardware.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not planning on gaming, so I don't need ridiculous refresh rates, just a decent viewing angle.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

1920x1080 minimum resolution BT 5 or 5.1 (a LOT of wireless devices in my household, so efficiency/minimizing interference is ideal) wifi6 would be nice but 5 is fine, though this mostly accompanies BT5+, from what I've seen. Keyboard and mouse can be garbage for all I care, since I've got plenty of spares of both. Build quality is a plus, but as long as I'm not going to be dealing with broken hinges in a few months, it's not make-or-break, and I'm generally pretty good about taking care of my gadgets.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Not having an option to upgrade RAM or storage is a deal breaker, so that knocks out all the chromebooks, Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, and Microsoft Surface products I've looked at (because they're either soldered or just not upgradeable). As long as it has a reasonable minimum of 8gb RAM and 256+gb SSD, it's fine, and doing the upgrades myself is almost always cheaper than the upgrade option from the manufacturer/Amazon/whatever.

A decent port selection is a bonus but not critical. Same for a card reader.

Laptop for School and Light Gaming, US $2,000

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:38 PM PST

Hey everyone. I'm a junior in college looking for a laptop to last me a while, probably past grad school. I mainly use my laptop for coding, writing, research, youtube, and light gaming. Thanks in advance!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
My budget is up to 2k. I can probably pay a bit more but I would prefer not to.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
No, I prefer a new laptop.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, build quality, battery life. I only play games once in a while, so I don' beneed to rely heavily on battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I need something light and thin. My current computer is too huge and it's a hassle carrying it around campus.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-14" for portability
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I use R and Zotero for school. I play Minecraft (bedrock) and Roblox when I can.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Minecraft is the heaviest "gaming" I do so I'm fine with something that can handle that.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good keyboard and touchpad is important because I write a lot. I am also looking for a good webcam because I'm tired of looking pixelated on Zoom.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I need to have this computer by April as my gap quarter will be ending then. I also prefer Windows computers!

Looking to run Escape From Tarkov ONLY.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:16 PM PST

I am looking for a laptop that is NOT labeled as and is NOT a dedicated gaming laptop but that can run Escape from Tarkov. I only want to run that game and no other game.

I will only use the laptop to do basic internet searches, print things on occasion (or light use).

In other words, I want a laptop that looks like a regular old every day use, but has some kick. My budget is pretty low too $500 - 800. However, I just want to run this one game and that's it!

Looking for a laptop for Video and Photo editing

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:04 PM PST

Hi everyone, I thought I'd come here to get a couple of suggestions.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      - AU$1000 - AU$2000 - Purchasing in Australia.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
-ideally I would like to buy new, but open to good value refurbs
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - Looking for a good all rounder. I need something that will perform well running demanding software such as Lightroom, Da Vinci Resolve, Photoshop ect.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      - not too important but I'd prefer it a bit lighter
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
-I'm not too fussy on screen size, but would like 13-15" as I travel around quite a bit
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-I'll be working with photo and video editing. I'll be using Lightroom, Photoshop and After Effects/Da Vinci Resolve/LR Timelapse.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      -
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      - Must have at least 8gb RAM and an SSD drive - 512 . I need a solid screen that is colour accurate, and ideally an i7 or equivalent processor.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-I need my laptop to be able to handle huge workloads. I will be using it primarily for editing both video and photos. I'll be working with huge files so it is important that it can handle rendering 4k footage to a reasonable degree.

I understand I might be expecting too much for my budget, but I'm just hoping there will be good valued laptops out there that don't have to cost a fortune. Is a gaming laptop my best option?

    Thanks!

Hello, I am currently a freshman in high school and i'm looking for a new laptop for school since we may go back in person. I mainly plan on using it for schoolwork, watching movies and shows and maybe some light gaming.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I wish to run games like Minecraft and Sims 3 and 4 but i can do with out gaming.

I have been looking into the Surface laptop 3 and Xps 13 but they both have some issues so i'm not completely sure yet. I'd also like a computer that isn't know for fan or thermal issues and has a simple look much like the Surface laptop 3.

Please comment and thank you in advance !
