SUCCESS!!! I fixed my rental unit's WiFi Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:35 PM PST As it says, I've finally resolved (hacked around) a property I'm renting for 6 weeks. The WiFi has been the worst experience of "internet" I've had in over a decade. Thought I'd echo it here in case others have similar, or someone just wants to read a good-news story for a change. Symptoms:
Resolution: Remember, this is a rental so I can't do much admin. After 2 days of barely getting any work done (we're here for 6 weeks, this is week 5) I had my last straw. I went to buy some kit. Couldn't decide if I'd just run a long cable to only my computer, or try to see if I could double NAT with a 2nd (my) router that is hardwired to the gateway. Went with a cheep Linksys E5400 router because it was basically the same price as 50' of CAT6. It was a little flaky at first, raised some concerns it wouldn't help, but the trigger was when my phone errored with a private DNS unreachable message about "Primary DNS Not Responding". The "Primary DNS" is the gateway at 192.168.0.1. AH-HA!!!! moment. All this headache is because it's got a bad DNS config. I don't know where it's pointing, but if it's going to Spectrum ISP then I blame Spectrum. If it's going to some 3rd party then I blame whoever set this garbage up. Maybe their making money off tracking my DNS, who knows. So, went to my 2nd router and flipped it over to Static IP (aka, turned of DHCP), and hard-coded the DNS1 / 2 to google's 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 respectively. Results:

Monetary value of good cabling, when buying property. Posted: 26 Feb 2021 04:00 AM PST This is a question that has been in the back of my mind for a while, just because of r/homenetworking. I occasionally come across comments saying that good structured cabling, or neatly arranged electrical/ISP boxes add value to your house. Has anyone ever really weighed this into the decision to buy one place over another? This seems like wishful thinking to me... if I am buying property, then the last thing on my mind is whether there is nice cabling pre-installed. I'm thinking about the size of the place, how good the building is, how close it is to transport, whether there's a pool, what the school zone is (I have kids, if the school zone is good, then public school is free, if it's bad then private schools are tens of thousands a year). These factors add up to a huge sum of money. Getting in a contractor to fully wire the place is going to be... maybe a quarter the cost of a pool, or a quarter or an eighth of the cost of one year of school fees. Similarly, if I was going to sell, I would spend money on paint, on yardwork, on advertising. I would not spend money on cabling. On either side of a property transaction, the value of cabling to me is literally zero. If I own a place, I would get it cabled properly for my own use, but I would expect nobody else to value it (even my family). [link] [comments] |
Switch constantly dropping connections Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:21 PM PST I've upgraded my home network from where it's been for about the past 10 years. Previously, I had a wireless router coming into the basement and hooked to two old linksys 802.11g routers acting as access points on the main and second floor. Family has expanded and technology moved on, so I've upgraded. Coming into the basement, I have cable internet hooked up to a TP-Link TL-R600VPN Router. From there, one of the router LAN ports hooks into a TP-Link TL-SG1016PE switch. The switch is hooked into about 12 hard wired connections of various devices. There are also two TP-Link EAP225V3s hooked to the switch. The issue is the switch is constantly dropping connections. Video conferencing on zoom/teams constantly drops since switching over to this setup. Video game consoles constantly lose connections over hardwired connections. Laptops drop wireless internet connections. Strangely enough, I haven't had any issues with the hardwired desktop, wireless printer or Google home devices. At first I thought it was a defective switch, as it took a bunch of hard resets on the first switch to get the POE working. I've replaced it with an identical model and still have the dropping issue constantly. When switching the hard wired connections from the switch to the router, the dropping issue goes away. Unfortunately, I only have 4 LAN ports on the router. Any thoughts here? [link] [comments] |
Dealing with Phone Junction Box When Converting from Phone to Ethernet Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:13 PM PST So I have discovered that the unused phone jacks in my home are all CAT 5e cabling! Hurrah! I've been researching for a few days now how to convert the phone lines into a wired LAN. I know how to install/rewire the CAT 5e jacks on the wall plates and have done that before at another home. However, I'm stuck on what to do at the phone line junction box and could use some help. The internet enters our home through the cable line in a COMPLETELY different location from the phone line so there's no installing the router at the junction box (which is outdoors anyways). I know I need to disconnect all the cabling from the phone line for safety but I'm a bit lost on getting them all back together. The router is in my office so I can't just plug them all into it and call it a day. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've linked a close up picture of the phone line junction box and a picture that shows both that box and another box that's connected to it. (You can ignore the cable line box it's completely disconnected.) [link] [comments] |
How can I tell which channels in my router work best? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:46 PM PST Title pretty well says it. How can I determine which channels have the least traffic on each network both 2.8 and 5. ghz? [link] [comments] |
Port Forwarding with 2 routers Posted: 26 Feb 2021 06:39 PM PST I have been trying to set up a valheim server on my computer, i have set the UDP/TCP on the inbound and outbound for the windows firewall rules. then i went to my netgear nighthawk router and open the port for 2456-2458. went to my Verizon router which is a older router and discontinued. open the same ports for that router, did a port check on those port they still remain closed. called Verizon and ask them for help and since my router is old they wont help me at all. they told me if i want to pay 15 dollar a month to rent a new router or 300 to purchase i can then they would help me. for that i could just purchase a server from a website and have someone else host it. that not what i want to do i want to avoid the cost and host it on my own computer. if someone can help me that would be cool, spent the last 2 days reading and trying to trouble shoot it with no results. Is this future home of some networking gear, ethernet IoT, too close to the AC wiring? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 05:57 PM PST There is a bay slightly down the stairs that is slightly too thin but I can sawzall it out. Wondering if this is too close for comfort near the AC power. [link] [comments] |
Looking to extend my rt-ac86u coverage with aimesh Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:28 PM PST Hi guys, im looking to extend my network in my house, i did a little research and from what i see there's rt-ac59u v2 that has aimesh. Is this the best way to extend my wifi coverage ? Or is there a better way ? Also anyone has experienced using ac59u v2 as aimesh ? [link] [comments] |
Which Orbi Mesh for Gigabit FIOS? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:07 PM PST Reading other posts and looking at the orbi mesh options, most say they support up to 200mbps. Is there an orbi mesh router that gives me the gigabit speed from Verizon on hardwire, and > 500 Up/Down on WiFi? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2021 02:58 PM PST I'm moving to a new home and planning to run ethernet with some AP throughout the house. I have an old Linksys EA9200. I was wondering if I should upgrade the router, even though I won't be using the wifi from the router. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:45 PM PST Hello I'm just another user who discovered moca after finding out that the power line adapter cant handle my speeds. Only question is are there ones with more than one Ethernet port? I'm looking to connect a switch and maybe another game console so I need at least 2. The only two that ive seen are one made by action tech and sold by fios how ever im hearing that its horrible in terms of delivering gigabit speeds. And another which kinda looks sketchy to me from the usb to plug set up. [link] [comments] |

Automatically power-cycling a modem and router: is there a device for this? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:33 PM PST I have an old century home with a not great electrical setup. And my EdgeRouter + Unifi AP is plugged into a power strip. Every so often my EdgeRouter (or Unifi AP I'm not sure) suddenly stops working and my Wi-Fi connection dies completely. When this happens the only way to get it working is to power cycle the power strip that my EdgeRouter and Unifi AP are plugged into. Pretty sure that it has to do either with my house's electrical setup or the power strip which admittedly is a pretty old one. Like many people my entire house, from the Nest cameras to the thermostat, are IoT. So if my Internet dies while I'm away from home I have no connectivity. I don't like this. Is there a such thing as a power strip/plug adapter that automatically power-cycles when it detects a dropped Internet connection? Or an LTE connected one that allows remote power cycling? UniFi has this Smart Power Plug, but I heard that it kind of sucks. [link] [comments] |
router recommendation for an ISP that offers gigabit internet. Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:30 PM PST My ISP has gigabit speeds and their router rental costs $15/month. Even the tech guy recommended me to buy my own, so I'm asking here for advice. General: My apartment is around 1100sqft, 2 bedroom unit (single story). We have the following devices "always connected" during the day: 2 iphones, 1 Nest Camera, 2 computers for work (sometimes 4 if I need to switch). Other than that, there's the typical apple tv's, apple watches, SmartThings, Hue bulbs that's also always connected, but we may not be using actively. Question: Will something like the eero pro be enough for me? Ideally, I would like something that can give me gigabit speed if possible on both LAN and WIFI. Is that possible? If so, I do like the eero, but I wish it had a couple more ethernet ports. Is there an alternative that you would reccomend? [link] [comments] |
Solutions or reasons as to why I've slowly lost speed through my Powerline adapter over time? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:11 PM PST Howdy, I've been utilizing a powerline adapter for probably 7ish years now to great success. However, recently I've been getting only about 40-80Mbps down vs some nutty 100-150 Mbps speeds when I first got my kit. Our router speeds are tested to run at 300 Mbps down which ironically is a bit of an upgrade from 200Mpbs we had when I first set these up. I'm looking for input or possible reasons as to why I'm experiencing this and possible solutions. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:52 PM PST I currently use the router + modem provided by my ISP (some generic Huawei router), and I've always planned on buying a better router (eyeing some ASUS AX series routers). I've already heard from people, using the same ISP router i'm using, that switching to a better router increased their download speeds. My question is, will using a high quality router feel close to using wired? Also, what is my ISP's generic router doing? It caps at 30Mbps, while wired reaches speeds of up to 100Mbps.@ (I tested both of these things only having ONE device connected). I've checked the router firmware and can't seem to figure out what's happening. Just wanted to know this out of curiosity so I know what to watch out for in the future. [link] [comments] |

ISP is forcing me to get a 3.1 modem, should I upgrade my router (Archer A7) as well? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:44 PM PST My ISP, COX, sent me an email saying they are upgrading my internet plan (from Ultimate Classic 300 to Ultimate 500) and that I would need to get a 3.1 cable modem. I currently have a TP-Link TC-7620 but was thinking of getting the SB8200. My current router is an Archer A7. Should I upgrade the router as well or no? I live in an upstairs apartment unit. 2 PCs are on Ethernet, 3 phones and 2 laptops and a Roku streaming device are on WIFI. [link] [comments] |
New Home and Wired Router Advice Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:23 PM PST I am moving into a new place and was excited to see it pre-wired with Cat-5e. The junction box for the coaxial line into the home is in the master bedroom's closet with all the ethernet drops to all the rooms. Does anyone have any recommended wired routers that can handle the IP assignment throughout the home and then push out to wireless APs that I can strategically place in the 2 story unit? Or is there a better configuration I am not considering here? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:13 PM PST Hello folks, Long story short I am renting a 2 level house and the owner tells me only two rooms have an active coax connection. The other rooms do have cable drops but are inactive. I have tested this by plugging in my modem and seeing if it could lock on a signal - it cannot. So tracing the coax line behind the wall I see the splitter - so far so good, then I follow the other coax line and....it's cut. So my question is, who can run a new coax line ? Comcast is coming out on site next week but will they be able to do that or do I need to hire a contractor to run a new coax line. I just want my MoCA to work :( [link] [comments] |
Added a Managed switch pre router and now the router wont connect Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:04 PM PST so due to latency issues through my router all LAN i opted to add switch between my router and modem to get that sweet sweet low latency for my games, however after some research the internet told me i needed a managed switch so i picked up a GS308T and plugged it up reset everything and voila me and wife suddenly have a quarter the ping in all games life is bliss, except that now the router wont let anything access the internet connected via wifi. Is there a setting or i am missing. Router is a nighthawk RAX50 [link] [comments] |
Trying to set up a dedicated server for gaming. Is port forwarding available with my set up? Posted: 26 Feb 2021 06:49 PM PST I live in an apartment that handles our internet which means I don't have access to the xfinity account to set up the port forwarding. Is there a way to work around this? I saw something called a upnp on a different thread that looked like it might help?? Anyways would love some help. [link] [comments] |
Help with first time MoCA setup in new house Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:45 PM PST Hi, hopefully this is the right place to ask. I've been spending the past couple days unsuccessfully trying to wire up two goCoax MoCA 2.5 adapters from one room with the modem (room 1) to my bedroom with a PC (room 2). I have the PoE filter installed at the splitter coming in from the street, though I did notice the splitter is 5-1002Mhz. I had read around that this should still work to some degree, though. My ISP is Comcast. The wiring is setup as such: Room 1 wall -> Adapter -> SB6183 Modem Adapter (ethernet)> Edgerouter X Room 2 wall -> Adapter (ethernet)> PC I had no issues logging into the device management on both ends, but I haven't once gotten the MoCA light to blink which seems to indicate that it hasn't actually linked up. I haven't messed around with the settings. I'm not sure if I'm gravely misunderstanding something or if the problem is the splitter coming in from the street after all - though I also am not too sure how the internal coaxial wiring is done and I don't know if there are any internal splitters (I imagine there must be at least one). My modem is still working fine through the passthrough coaxial and the edgerouter port I'm using works perfectly fine if I hook it up directly to a computer. [link] [comments] |
Is there a router or such solution that would split my network in 2? One WireGuard or openvpn Posted: 26 Feb 2021 06:34 PM PST I put a vpn on my router. Works great, except when a site doesn't allow vpn. Is there a router that broadcast one ssid using the vpn and another without? Or another solution? I like my Whole house vpn but some devices like Apple TV don't play nice with vpn. I need a second non vpn WiFi [link] [comments] |
WiFi monitoring/notification at home Posted: 26 Feb 2021 06:32 PM PST We have weird internet that will be fine, then all of a sudden it starts to be unstable, it looks like I lose connectivity to the router for a second or two. This is frustrating us when we're on zoom calls and it's cutting out. Is there a way I can monitor things to know if it's going south? Sometimes rebooting the router is needed. Is it common to have to reboot the router every few days? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
