Posted: 25 Feb 2021 04:58 PM PST So my sister just purchased a new home and she needs internet. I notice providers are giving options like (1-3 Devices at a Time) so that set off alarm bells because 3 devices isnt enough so I rather get her a router that can handle at least 12 devices so MUMimo. Issue is I don't know what is the most cost effective and right direction to take considering its an old house. They are kids and 2 adults so... 4 streams at the same time. [link] [comments] |
What is this port on the wall for? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:42 PM PST A dumb question probably. I thought it was an ethernet port, but after looking closely it doesn't appears to be one. I just move to this house recently, so I would like to know what this is for. Thanks in advance! photo [link] [comments] |

How do I connect 2 wall Jack ports for Ethernet? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 04:00 PM PST I don't know if phrased that correctly, but I'll try to explain, I just switched providers and the previous provider set up a router (that was connected with the wall in my room) so I could connect a Ethernet cable to that router and run Ethernet on my pc. But now that I switched internet providers I need to figure out how to connect the new internet with the same Jack. The modem is connected to the same wall panel as before, the technic who installed it said that they use coaxial cable while my previous provider used the phone Jack for something, not sure what 🤷♂️. Any help would be greatly appreciated, if I didn't list some crucial info let me know and I'll try to pass along that info. [link] [comments] |
Guidance for running ethernet cable - basement joists Posted: 25 Feb 2021 12:13 PM PST Hey all! Just finishing this run of ethernet in the basement. Please see imgur link for pic reference.
Thanks! EDIT: Thanks for the great advice guys. I was intimidated & impatient. Decided I did not want to start looking up building codes, and wanted to get this done (as I was tired of fiberglass everywhere); so I did it the hard way and just followed the existing cabling and attached to it or above/below as permitted. It's clean and didn't have to mess with the joists! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2021 11:16 AM PST Hi all, We had our setup that consisted of 2 routers and a wifi extender. Since it's only 1 network, we discovered that we should use switches instead of routers. We successfully switched them out which increased our internet speed 3x. However, we have an issue with one of our PCs not able to connect via ethernet since making the change. Had no issues when it was going through the router. We used the same plugs and cables and tried changing the ports around, but still the same so it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. I tried setting a manual ip address as it wasn't getting one automatically I was wondering if anyone had an idea on what I could look into for a fix? Cheers [link] [comments] |
Found something strange in iptables Posted: 25 Feb 2021 04:52 PM PST So I was taking a look into iptables on my raspberry pi when I found a strange rule telling it to accept all connections from a certain IP address. I looked up where the IP was registered and it displayed that it was from Romania. How do I remove this rule from my firewall? Is this something I should be concerned about? [link] [comments] |
Unlimitedville two year review Posted: 25 Feb 2021 12:14 PM PST We live just outside the nearest cell providers area. Nevertheless, with an antenna we can get 7mbps to 15mbps. Unfortunately, there is little alternative for us. True, Unlimitedville does not "throttle" data so while it's working it's just barely adequate. We accept that but one thing I have definitely noticed over the two years is that periodically, the routers will just stop working. At first, the service department recognized the issue and sent out a new card with a couple days. Over time, Unlimitedvilles customer service has taken up to two weeks to issue cards. This seems to be the norm. Yes, they credit the account but if you go with Unlimitedville, be prepared to be without internet for two weeks once it goes down and they always do after a few months. Maybe this is unique but somehow I doubt it. Once contacting, they make you wait a couple days to see if it happens to magically work or be "reset" as tgey say. Then, they take days to respond and after three or four days they say they are sending out a card which requires you to verify your address. Then, they take a couple more days to send out a card. If I had any alternative, I would not use Unlimitedville anymore. [link] [comments] |
New Home Networking Setup, which router? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 03:50 PM PST My router of 7 years can no longer handle the amount of devices we connect nor is the range any good. Was planning on getting an AIO router, but I plan on building a solid home network as I want some isolation via VLAN. I have a Netgear Managed Switch and Sky broadband. For my new router I am struggling to decide between Netgear BR200 SMB insight VPN router or Ubiquiti Edge router X, the netgear one seems to have a bit more powerful hardware. I should say that may home does have CAT 6 wiring throughout and I know that the edge router will cap it's throughput if certain features are enabled. I only plan on using the router for all DHCP/Firewall stuff and Vlan config and then connect some TP-Link EAP225 Access Points which supports multiple SSIDS/Vlans. Any recommendation on this setup/ router choice. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2021 01:01 PM PST Hi guys, first of all, that's a newbie, educational, technical question. Lately, I've wondered what would happen if I were to lose or send a corrupt packet to the VPN, and I couldn't find any easy-to-understand answer. Basically, the UDP protocol doesn't verify a packet's integrity nor resends it if it's corrupt. A TCP connection that would normally be between the backup provider and my device is now between the VPN and the backup provider. Let's suppose my internet connection gets unreliable for a few seconds, and I lose a packet's integrity, don't send something like the first packets with the first headers that describe a file, or even send something wrong between my phone and the VPN that is critical to the upload. As the established connection is between the VPN and the backup provider now, the decrypted packet would actually not be corrupt at all, and it would be sent as the original to them. They didn't communicate with me, but with my VPN, which redirected to me. Once their TCP connection is over and supposing there are no checksums, did I send a corrupt file to them because the VPN that is in the middle received parts of a corrupt file and didn't check because it's UDP? Ok, I know it's unlikely to happen, but I'm trying to understand what happens between a generic OpenVPN UDP provider and my device while uploading. Could you guys enlighten my mind up? Where is it wrong? What am I missing here? Or, maybe I'm right? Is it what would happen if those apps don't do a checksum locally? A "slight corrupt" image with some missing pixels would be backed up instead of the original? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Utilizing a CAT6 run as a Voice Line Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:51 PM PST Hey all! I just ran 10 new runs of CAT6 throughout the house, and all are terminating to the Leviton Patch panel (first pic). I'd like to use one of the ports as a fax line (yes I'm aware), can I make a patch-cable with ethernet on one end (which plugs into the patch panel), and then from that patch-cable take two wires and plug it into the voice module (second photo)? I understand ethernet well, POTS not as well (in fact this is the first time dealing with this!). [link] [comments] |
Printer on home network but won't work when on VPN Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:41 PM PST I am WFH now and bought a printer. It works great from all mobile devices, etc.. The one issue I have is when I try to print from my work computer + when I am logged into my work VPN. If I disconnect from VPN it prints fine but that is obnoxious to have to sign out and back in repeatedly. Does anyone what might be causing this? Printer is an Epson. [link] [comments] |
Moving my modem/router 4ft lower. Should I run new cat5 or can I splice it? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:10 PM PST So in my previous set up I had my router/modem set up in a cabinet over my TV and had all my cables hidden. I have changed my previous set up and now my router is just hanging off the wall. Where I intended to have it now is behind that wall but 4ft lower. I had already ran cat5 to different rooms throughout the house. So my question is what would be the best practice here?? Run new cat5 or is there a way to splice them? Complete novice here. I plan to add 48 port switch to the router/modem then go from there. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Help choosing a router please! Posted: 25 Feb 2021 04:58 PM PST I recently upgraded my internet to a 1GB service that is listed as capable of 10GB for futureproofing. They gave a midteir modem/wifi combo along the lines of an AC1350 or so but the TV in the master bedroom struggles to connect to the WiFi even when using an extender (has always struggled a little bit but this has gotten much worse since switching to this new wifi device), so I am looking into getting my own router. The router typically sits in the living room close to the bulk of my electronics, and the master bedroom is roughly 50-60ft down a hallway with the TV around the corner. My phone gets signal just fine in there but for some reason our TV and extender struggle at that range (not sure if it's the wifi in the TV or possibly the pipes or fuse box between the TV and living room causing this.) I am the type of person that would rather fork out a little extra $ to have quality electronics. As I am searching Amazon and googling best routers etc, I am seeing a lot of articles that list the "best" but then when I read Amazon reviews they almost All have pretty awful reviews. Can you guys offer me any insight/aid in tracking down a quality WiFi router? I tend to connect my heavy duty electronics by ethernet as much as possible but the TV in the bedroom is impractical to do that without running a cable through my entire apartment. This will be the first time I have bought my own router rather than relying on what the company gives us, and I would prefer to pay for something that will be usable for an extended period of time so that I won't have to go through this process again for a while :) A list of the big internet usages in my apartment: PS5, 2 PS4s, Custom Gaming Desktop, Store-Bought Gaming Desktop & Laptop, 4 smart TVs, Mobile Phones, "Alexa Device". Of course they aren't all running at once, but just to give an idea of what my internet usage looks like. Thanks for reading & for any feedback you may be able to offer! [link] [comments] |
Internet cutting out randomly? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 08:36 PM PST Hello! Currently my setup is a Cisco RV340 - K9 V04 connected to my desktop (Motherboard ASUS TUF Gaming B550 Plus) via a long Cat6 cable. I have 2 gigabit fiber modems connected to WAN1 and WAN2 on my router. My internet keeps disconnecting randomly and I can't figure out the reason. It cuts out for 5-30 seconds randomly at different times of the day. It does not seem to affect my other devices, but I cannot be sure. During this time, I am still able to access my router management interface via my browser. I've already tried re-installing my motherboard's network driver, as well as updating my router to the latest firmware. Please help me, I am completely clueless. If any additional information is required, please let me know. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Trying to set up a home network in a 4 story townhouse Posted: 25 Feb 2021 08:16 PM PST Hello, I looked through the sub and read some other people with somewhat similar setups so please tell me if I'm doing this right or missing something.. So I live in a 4 floor townhouse, most rooms have Ethernet jacks that all connect to a box in the garage. I have FIOS and signed up for a 400 Mbps plan. Right now I've got a g1100 fios router in that garage box and it's 4 LAN ports are connected to 4 of the Ethernet jacks in other parts of the house. I also own an Asus RT-AC68U router, a synology RT2600ac router, and a 5 port tp-link gigabit switch. So my assumption is that I should be setting up these 2 routers in access point mode and plugging them into Ethernet jacks in different locations in the house in order to provide the best wifi coverage. Is that right? And will I also be able to plug devices directly into these "access points" too? In the 2 access point routers do I use identify wifi SSID and other settings? Am I supposed to disable wifi on the Verizon g1100 router or should that have the same wifi settings as well? Is there anything else I need to be doing on the g1100 to make this work correctly and give me the 400 Mbps that I'm paying for or close to it? Thanks [link] [comments] |

Are certain devices not capable of faster internet speeds? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 08:08 PM PST I was just testing my internet connection on various devices. A hard wired connection into my laptop got speeds of about 230 Mbps while a hardwired connection out of my smart TV could only get about 60 Mbps. As a side note... the laptop I was using is an old HP laptop from about 2009 and the smart TV is a Samsung and is almost brand new. Also, I only get about 120 Mbps out of my PlayStation 4. I tried all devices hardwired on the same cable and got these results. Does anyone know why I get these massive differences in speeds depending on the device. I would like to have the full 230 Mbps that my internet is capable of on my smart TV so it's faster for streaming services. [link] [comments] |
Can I utilize both LAN ports on PC as a switch? Posted: 25 Feb 2021 07:55 PM PST with the announcement of the new 2.5G switches coming through I'll need to get a NIC for my PC that works with it. That leaves an extra motherboard LAN port unused. Could I hook up the router to the 2.5G NIC and then my TV to the motherboard LAN as a sort of dummy switch? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2021 07:54 PM PST I have a question regarding my home networking set up. All of my machines point to my router, 192.168.1.1, as the DNS service. The router points to my PiHole, 192.168.1.22. That points to my custom DNS running on Ubuntu server 192.168.1.20. All of this adds between 5 and 15 ms of lag to my ping, depending on the Speedtest. I understand that this is obviously going to add a little bit of latency, but my question is regarding streamlining the process. Should I cut my router out of the equation entirely and point the machines directly to the pie hole? The router is running DDWRT. The pie hole and the DNS are both running on the same machine, an old MacBook Pro running Ubuntu server. Obviously everything is plugged in via ethernet cable. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2021 07:38 PM PST Should I have loose cat 6 cables run out of a hole in the wall into a keystone jack inside a server rack and then go into the server rack or should I have a keystone wall drilled into the wall and then have each cable attached to a network switch? Assume 24 different Ethernet lines. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2021 07:17 PM PST Was wondering I just recently bought an ASUS AX86U router and something was going on with the ports. The ports were showing that the status was 100mbps connecting from the router to the Xbox but when connecting the Xbox to my xfinity xb7 modem I was getting near gigabit speeds so I decided to return the router and have a new one sent out. Has anyone else ever had this kind of issue with their AC86U router? I have Gigabit internet with xfinity and put my XB7 router into bridge mode. [link] [comments] |
Struggling on how to wire internet Posted: 25 Feb 2021 07:00 PM PST Home apparently has cat5e ports in several rooms but none of them work because I do not know how to connect anything. Currently the modem and router are working and we only have wi-fi. What equipment do I need to purchase to have ethernet in all the rooms working? (A switch?) Right now in the closet internet cabinet there is

Posted: 25 Feb 2021 06:42 PM PST I recently got a new router and it's from the same company as my old one. The problem is they gave a coaxial cable far too short to connect to where my old router was placed. I am wondering whether or not I can use my old coaxial cable (the one my old router was connected to) or not. It would be a problem if the router isn't in the exact same spot since some Ethernet cables are connected to it and they barely reach the router. I tried checking for the coaxial type on the cable but I couldn't find it anywhere. [link] [comments] |
