My Setup so far - how does it look? Posted: 12 Feb 2021 12:51 PM PST Pulled a bunch of CAT6 line (a few over 60') and spent way more time crawling in the attic then I would like to admit...plus having a two story home made it even further challenging...but I think the end result is worth it! White = Home Automation stuff (Cameras, security system, Hubs, etc) Blue = PCs/Printers all terminated to wall plate keystone jacks in my office Black = TVs also terminated to wall plate keystone jacks behind the TVs I've been eyeing whole home audio next... hmm [link] [comments] |
Did my first cable run/termination Posted: 11 Feb 2021 09:23 PM PST Got tired of slow powerline adapters so I ran 10 cables and terminated them with keystone wallplates! All went well got each of them the first try and they all tested good and are getting my full up and down speed! (Also a little edit I'm 23 and live at home still so this was a little Thursday afternoon father son project) [link] [comments] |
Questions about Subnet Masks (and loosing internet connection) Posted: 12 Feb 2021 04:38 PM PST Hi everyone. I've been having problems where all the devices on my network (wired AND wireless) have been loosing connection around once every 10 minutes or so. It is a very brief interruption, but it is enough to kick you out of a game or stop a download. I've tried the basic troubleshooting steps like restarting/unplugging and making sure firmware updates to the latest option. I've verified it wasn't an issue from my ISP. I called them and they couldn't see an issue, but I've also hardwired my desktop to the modem and the problem went away. My router is an Asus RT-N66U running firmware version 3.0.0.4.382 52272. Through some other discussions with networking minded people, I've discovered that maybe my subnet mask is screwed up? When I go to Advanced Setting > LAN, the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0. When I look at my internet settings in the router interface, it says the subnet mask is 255.255.248.0. Should these subnet masks be different? Could this be contributing to my problem? Anything else I should try before pulling the trigger on a new router? Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:20 PM PST Good day all I have a starlink setup . I am trying to use my current network that extends out to the shop with it . I am not sure if it just will not work with starlink or if I am just not setting something right . I bought a newer router and took the starlink one out of the system as I thought that was the issue . The router I have now is a tplink ax 1800 . I have a UeeVii 5.8G Outdoor CPE Bridge setup out to the shop . I have been using it successfully with it plugged into the smart hub I have internet out to the shop . But on the starlink setup it doesnt matter what port I have it plugged into on the router I cant get the internet out there . Is there a setting I should be looking for to make it work or is it just not going to work at this time with starlink . I have read that people are having issues but also read with your own router some have been able to make it work . So working previous with the smart hub Ueevii was plugged into a Lan port from the hub . It is a PoE setup . It has switches on each access point to put one as slave and one as master . As I mentioned it works fine plugged into the smart hub and i have internet out to the shop . But on the ax 1800 in a lan port it doenst work . It doesnt show as it is even plugged in on the web based page for the tp link router Thanks in advance for any help [link] [comments] |
Adding an access point in a 3rd story townhome Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:12 PM PST Hey everyone. As the title says, I recently moved into a 3 story townhome and could use help setting up my backup router as an access point. My current setup: I have fiber optic internet using a centurylink router/modem in my first floor office which is connected to the wall ethernet jack. Due to the multiple stories, I do not get great wifi reach on the 3rd floor, and would like to use a second router I have as an access point. This is where I'm stuck. I watched some youtube videos and apparently I have to physically connect the Access Point (located on the 3rd level ) via ethernet to the router on the first floor. So I'm supposed to run one cable across multiple floors? The 3rd floor guest room does have an ethernet jack but when I plugged into that, I'm not getting any network activity. I called my ISP and they said only the jack on the first floor is a source of internet. So what's the purpose of the 3rd floor jack? Any assistance is appreciated as I'm not sure how to proceed. Need some advice to update my home network setup. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 11:39 AM PST I've recently just updated upgraded my ISP to Spectrum 300, previously was ATT DSL, and got a new modem (Netgear Docsis 3.1 gigabit modem), Wi-Fi router (ASUS ZenWfi AX mini-two nodes) and unmanaged switch(TP-link 8 port gigabit switch), to push connect all my devices and push Wi-Fi through my 1800 sq for house. It's working nicely but I can't help but want to clean up this mess I have here. In the first photo I have all these cat6 lines that aren't "live". I have no experience with home networks but feel like I can clean this up a little. Also, the reason I did NOT go with a Unifi Dream Machine setup is because I was hoping to just get a simple Wi-Fi 6 solution until we know whether or not we will be in this place longer than the next few years. So here's what I'm thinking: - Get a 16port unmanaged switch and run the rest of the unconnected lines from this switch. - Run the cable source directly the modem since the second cable line is not needed. - I'd like to ad an outdoor AP, so one of the unmanaged ports would be dedicated to this AP. - I'd love a non POE AP recommendation as I don't want to, nor how to set up a managed switch in my set up. I would love any thoughts. Criticisms, suggestions. Etc! [link] [comments] |
Need some help, we’re new to this. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 03:12 PM PST We are trying to connect one of the Ethernet ports already installed on a wall in our office to the router. In the pictures, we think the yellow cable is the cable connect to the router and the rest of the blue wires are for rooms. We have one room with Ethernet (master bedroom and is connected to the yellow wire) and we are trying to connect another one as well. We already bought an Ethernet switch (Lynksys 5 port gigabyte Ethernet switch) but we do not really know the rest of the process. I would assume we plug the router cable (yellow one) into the switch and then the master bedroom one into that as well to maintain the connection but what about for the other room. Will it be a process of guess and check? - Finding the right blue cable that is connected to the room, plugging it in into the switch and testing it till we find the right one? Or will it be a different process? Let me know if I'm missing something also how would you go about putting the Ethernet connector to the cut blue wires that connect to the various rooms in our house? Thank you very much. Note: we do not have the switcher attached to anything yet, it's still in its box. We think you would plug it in between the yellow and blue cable where that little black square box is. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 12:43 PM PST Hi there, hoping someone may be able to help. I am planning on setting up a wireless network system for a charity who have a large building, and am looking for a reasonable configuration of equipment, on a tight budget (used is an option). Ideally it needs 8 access points, with room for potential expansion. PoE would be preferable. Cable runs could be up to 100metres. Needs to be fairly simple, I have a bit of networking background, but nothing on an enterprise level. There is hope of adding public guest access, so the ability to have a terms & conditions landing page would be great. At a guess, user count could be up to 50, perhaps more. I have looked at the ubiquiti gear, and was wondering if that would be a good choice, or if there is a better budget offering? Thanks for any responses. [link] [comments] |
I want to setup my old router as a bridge between the main router and home devices! Posted: 12 Feb 2021 02:50 PM PST So far the title, but before I have a question related to my desktop computer. Is there any difference between: - Main router connected to the computer through ethernet - Main router connected to bridge router through WiFi, then bridge router connected to computer through ethernet? What I want is to emulate the physical connection to the Internet. [link] [comments] |
Best router for many wired & wireless devices? Posted: 12 Feb 2021 02:44 PM PST Hey there, I am looking to set up a network that has about a dozen wired connections and a dozen wireless connections with 1gig internet. I currently have an Archer C7 which has treated me well for the most part, but it stops providing internet entirely when I have too many ethernet cables plugged in (described below). Is there a router that is best for this use case? Should I be thinking about other options besides a single router serving the entire house? More details: Right now I have 11 wired conections (I think), using a few ethernet switches to manage so many connections. If I plug in one more ethernet cable to the router, even if the cable itself isn't connected to a device, the router just breaks. It provides no wired or wireless internet anywhere, and connected devices display an "invalid ip" message. It is also not possible to connect to the router itself during this. I am assuming that there is just a limit to the number of physical connections I can make to the C7, although that doesn't really make sense to me. I'd appreciate any advice here. Let me know if I should provide more information. Thanks a bunch [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 06:12 PM PST I found multiple people giving advice to disable DHCP when a switch is directly connected to another. I know the answer is very obvious to many people, but I like to have affirmation: If I have the below setup, should I still disable DHCP on router2? router1 -> switch -> router2 [link] [comments] |
Can I add a second wired connection to my home network? Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:58 PM PST I'd like to have a wired connection for my laptop in my bedroom. My AT&T router/modem is currently in the living room and my room is on the complete opposite side of the house. I checked the internet speed in the living room and it's always in the upper 900 mbps meanwhile I'm barely raking in 50-60 mbps in my room. I chatted with AT&T's customer support about wanting to have both a better wifi signal throughout the house and a wired connection in my room. They advised me against installing a second router saying it would "cause interference issues and makes the internet slow and less performance" and encouraged me to purchase an extender. I may not know much but the agent's response seemed like bullshit to me. Could someone please give me advice on how to set up a network that would accomplish both of those things? I believe the house is pre-wired with ethernet cabling and have attached pictures for reference. [link] [comments] |
Getting slow ethernet speeds compared to isp router on openwrt Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:45 PM PST Hi! I setup openwrt a few days ago and for the most part its been working fine. I tried to download a large file today and noticed that I was only getting 10MB/s compared to the 50MB/s I used to get with the isp router. speedtest.net shows 400mb/s and the isp router showed 500mb/s. I'm using an Archer A7 on the release build with software and hardware flow offloading enabled. I read that the snapshot build provides better speeds but im not sure how to manually set that up [link] [comments] |
Need advice choosing a WiFi router with VPN Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:40 PM PST I have 3 streaming devices(2 Android TVs and an Apple TV) that I need to go through a VPN but I don't want my other devices to go through that VPN. I'm currently using my ISP's provided router and it craps out on me 2-3 times a day since I have like 15 devices connected to it wirelessly most of the time and it doesn't have VPN. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:32 PM PST Should i stay with 3.0 or move to 3.1. My plan is 400 and dont plan on going to 1000 anytime soon. I am buying new equipme.t for the increased speed as my current equipment is not up to par. Should i buy what i need for now or just jump to 3.1? The 3.1 equipment is double the price. Any input would help. [link] [comments] |
Is my ISP throttling my connection? Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:26 PM PST Ive had the worst experience with my isp and I dont know if i should switch, I have been having an internet issue for the past months and have tried everything to fix it, High latency spikes and dns issues, ive personally tried hardwiring to modem, changing routers, changing modems, even the isp sent a technician and all he did was "install" a 3 in one modem and router but didnt solve the problem at all, is it time to switch or is this a problem on my end? Home connection dropping frequently Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:25 PM PST Hello, my home internet is dropping about every hour. Looking for advice as to where and how to start troubleshooting. I have Comcast Xfinity cable, Arris modem sb6141, Netgear Orbi wireless router with one satellite and Cisco SG350 connected to the Orbi base. Several devices connected to the sg350, hue hub, ps4, etc. I have notice that the connection would often drop as soon as I hit go on a webpage on the browser. It would take about 30sec to 1 minute to come back online. It looks like some sort of a flood, dos, whatever thing. I vaguely remember this started about when the Comcast team was at the house patching some cables and added another box to my house, but just a cable in it. Not sure this is related. So far I tried disconnecting the switch, but still the same drop. Thanks, all! [link] [comments] |
Att Fiber > Edgerouter X > Unifi ACLR Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:20 PM PST Okay, writing after a long frustrating session. Speeds issue plus router/ap setup. Short version: with setup as Att Fiber > Edgerouter X > Unifi ACLR. The edgerouter lan connection to laptop was able to access the internet and test at similiar speeds, but the wifi clients are not getting an IP assigned through the AP. Long version: I recently got ATT Fiber gigabit with the black modem. 1 and a half story home near 4k sqft. After dealing with annoying drops and not being setup in an ideal location I tackled some home networking setup thanks to some help from here a while back. So I bought some cat6a cable and keystone jacks and went to work. Current setup is Ont > wall jack > wiring ran through up stairs > wall jack > gateway After setting up I tested lan speeds and they were coming in around 400mbps to my laptop which for whatever reason is the same it was testing before I moved it. I'm trying to setup my Edgerouter X and UP AC-LR Both on latest firmware as they were previously used. Factory reset router, set lan to 192.168.2.1 didn't touch any other settings. Connected to gateway, enabled IP passthrough fixed. Reconnected to edgerouter lan and was able to access internet and test with similiar speeds. Thinking all good, I connected the AP to one of the edgerouter lan ports using POE. Setup a controller on my laptop, adopted the AP, setup a new wifi network after disabling the bands from the gateway. I saw the wifi network show up but couldn't connect to it. Then it disappeared. Reconnecting to controller it couldn't find the AP so I power cycled everything. Then it showed up, but showed as provisioning for over half an hour, so I forgot the ap from controller and factory reset it. After that and adopting the AP and configuring wifi again, I again found the wifi network but it couldn't connect, eventually I connected but when I ran speed test on my phone it would start going up to about 50mbps then go all the way down to 0 before it disconnected and dissapeared. Only to pop back up a few minutes later and do the same thing. In the controller it said it had multiple devices failed to get an IP. I tried again by forgetting the controller and setup as stand alone with my phone and got the same results. Plugged AP directly to the gateway and it works fine. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:16 PM PST Hello, I have a network setup that keeps having shorting out issues. I am not a networking expert, but here is the design as best as I can describe it: Begin at the Network switch - POE Injector (I think that's what this is) - ethernet ground - access point - outdoor WIFI Antennae. I understand the ethernet ground (just a small box with ports on both sides and a ground wire grounded to the building) is there to protect the network in the event lightning hits the antennae. However, this has blown a few too many times over the past months. I seriously doubt the antennae has been hit by lightning this many times now. There are many other set ups identical to this one and this has been an outlier with this issue happening. Any ideas are appreciated. I am not sure if static electricity could be playing a role. Multiple times now both the ethernet cord end and the end in the ethernet ground that goes to the AP and then antennae has been blown out, just all melted/shorted out. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Changing MAC address on windows 10 Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:14 PM PST I recently got a pc but there are WiFi restrictions on my internet. Im not allowed to have Ethernet so I use wireless connection. The restrictions apply to individual Mac addresses so I tried to change my pc's MAC address to my iPads. I tried going into registry editor, network settings in control panel, tmac spoofer and using the device manager but none of them worked. I'm running Windows 10 and was wondering if it is possible to change my MAC address on pc(it worked on my Xbox 1). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:03 PM PST I currently have AT&T internet and I have been having a hard time finding a descent dsl modem. I bought a TP-Link AC1750 Smart WiFi Router (Archer A7). I just don't know about the modem. I hope you guys can help me out. P.s my current internet speed is 100mpbs. [link] [comments] |

Suggestions on best $200-250$ router this year? Posted: 12 Feb 2021 04:50 PM PST Looking for best bang for buck and something that might give me a signal at 60 meters away from my upstairs router through a couple walls. I could not find any good range tests anywhere. [link] [comments] |
My Google mesh system went out, and I need some help on deciding on a replacement. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 04:48 PM PST I want to start off and say that I am very new to world of home networking. I used to just plug in a router to my modem and call it a day. Since then I have moved towards a mesh network, and as the title suggests, I used the 1st gen Google Wifi pucks in leu of a router. I plugged google wifi puck into the modem via the WAN port, and I utilized the second puck as a mesh satellite in the office. I then hook my desktop to the second port via ethernet for internet access. In the past few days, I have noticed that my internet is super slow. I pay for 1000 Mbps speed via comcast, and my internet speed test results were 4.2 Mbps down and 32.3 Mbps up. I had a technician come out today, and we concluded that the google wifi pucks are at fault for the poor connection. My question is what is the best system to implement for my usage. I have looked into the Amplifi HD, Netgear Orbi AX6000, and other options. I am aware that I won't be able to acheive the advertised 1000 Mbps speed via wifi; however, I want to know what the best system out there would be for my needs. I appreciate the help and apologize for my limited knowledge. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 04:43 PM PST The modem is an Arris tg2482 provided by my local ISP "Claro", and I have been trying to access it to set up port forwarding, which I have done twice already with previous devices they have given me but no luck with this new one so far. I have tried to use the common 192.168.0.1 and the other one recommended one by arris themselves which is 192.168.100.1, as well as other ones from guys on youtube but I cannot access it. I tried cmd and ipconfig and it shows up as 192.168.0.1 but I get nothing from putting that in my browser. I have my pc directly connected to the modem and I also tried through my phone on wifi and nothing. What can I do, in terms for a networking pleb like me? [link] [comments] |
