Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:03 AM PST Hey guys I'm new here and to Linux as a whole. I've heard about it from many sources. And now I wanna shift from my windows OS to Linux fully. What might be the best Linux for me? Can you guys help me to get started? Every single tips and suggestions is appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 08:21 AM PST I'm going to ubuntu .com/download/server and downloading the link "Manual server installation." I load this onto a formatted USB stick using Unetbootwin. Then booting into the system, I'm not presented with the text based Ubuntu Server install but a graphical installation which tries to connect to WiFi and loads up the Ubuntu Desktop Live environment. I downloaded a mirror iso and it did the same thing. I googled and watched videos to see if the installation had changed, but everyone seems to think the Server installation is still text based. I'm now downloading the "Legacy" installer to see if that works but am I going crazy? [link] [comments] |
Can I disable Mint constantly asking for my password whenever I want to do something? Posted: 12 Feb 2021 12:41 PM PST So I finally gave up and downloaded Mint, Windows 10 is garbage but I'm forced to use it on my work laptop and PC but I have an old laptop that I still want to use and I couldn't get Windows 7 running on it properly. Now I installed Linux and while it's pretty weird for me right now since I've used Windows exclusively since 1999 and only used this for...30 minutes I think I'll learn to use it. But the one problem I have is, since I want to figure things out, I always get an annoying pop up saying I need authorisation and to insert my password, can I disable that? I don't care for this laptop and nobody is going to use it except me nor will I store anything valuable on it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 11:17 AM PST I'm running Linux Mint and the keepassxc is not the latest version through the software center. While it's definitely usable, the dark theme has some minor issues. I was considering adding the following PPA: https://launchpad.net/~phoerious/+archive/ubuntu/keepassxc Seems like launchpad is run by canonical, but how secure is that? Is it better to just download from the website directly? Obviously with something like a password manager I want to take some precaution. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 08:11 AM PST I created 2 folders in /var/www/html with same permissions. When I execute "code file.php" from folder A then Visual Studio Code opens fine with the file. But when executing from folder B then Visual Studio Code will not open the file. There is no error. I tried different permissions but it did not help. I must be missing something basic I think. Also I tried to open other programs like gedit and geany, but I have same issue then. It opens in folder A, but it does not open in folder B. [link] [comments] |
Installed Pop!_OS on a second HDD but Windows is not showing up on the bootloader Posted: 12 Feb 2021 12:53 PM PST To start off, I'm just starting to get into the world of Linux so forgive me if I say some things/use terminology that make no sense. So I downloaded Pop!_OS and put it on a USB and installed it on a second hard drive. The problem is, Windows is not showing up on the systemd boot loader. I even downloaded os-prober and Windows didn't show up. After a bit of searching around, it seems that Windows was installed in Legacy mode but Pop!_OS was installed in UEFI mode. To install Pop!_OS, all I did was
I'm not sure what I can change to make sure I install it in Legacy mode instead of UEFI mode (if that even was the issue). If I have to do a fresh install of Pop!_OS, what changes do I have to make on the steps above? Or, is the problem due to some other issue? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
[PHONE] Linux on a phone (Redmi 5 Plus) Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:08 AM PST Hi, I've got a Redmi 5 Plus (Xiaomi), and I'm tired of Android (and all this bloat/spyware). I want to install a Linux OS like UBPorts, Plasma Mobile, PureOS, PostMarketOS,... However I'm not very familiar with Linux on phones and whether this is a good Idea. Do you any documentation / tutorial. I just need Signal, Telegram, Phone, SMS, and a Browser (maybe other stuff like calendar or Spotify but not necessary) Thanks in advance :D [link] [comments] |

Posted: 12 Feb 2021 08:21 AM PST A friend has the same laptop as i do (acer aspire 3), and she was installing KDE NEON, however she has the same problem I had (it freezes after about 30 seconds), but she can't enter the boot menu to fix it, shift does nothing, esc enters her into a terminal and it says "GNU GRUB version 2.04 Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions" I was duelbooting kubunutu with windows, so i would boot into grub and fix it immediately, my friend isn't so we have no idea how to get the menu I got EDIT: We fixed it [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Feb 2021 04:41 PM PST Hello, everyone. I'm having a rather big issue where my WiFi- Intel Corporation Wireless 8265 / 8275 (rev 78)- uses way too much energy. My laptop model is Huawei KPL-W00 non-touch screen. I'm running Kubuntu LTS:
This is the energy use when WiFi is on. - And when it's off.(This is at around 60% battery with 50% screen brightness). As you can see the difference is absurd, it makes the laptop borderline useless for its intended purposes. The only related information I found is some gentleman on Arch forums having a similar issue and fixing it by compiling a new kernel. I have TLP installed and properly configured, the power saving when on battery is on. WIFI_PWR_ON_BAT=on I'm a beginner Linux user and I'm fine with tinkering if guided. What I can I do about this? I really enjoy Linux but the battery life is the most important aspect to me. Thank you in advance! edit. I managed to reduce the energy draw by replacing the basic wpa_supplicant with IWD. It took a while before it began working properly, but it basically consumes under 1W now according to powertop estimates. [link] [comments] |
gdm rotates screen in interesinting ways Posted: 12 Feb 2021 01:59 PM PST fist lets start by saying that i made my setup work in kde plasma (sdm) , so it is possible. i think gnome messed things up. the this is that my main monitor is upside down, so i open gnome settings, rotate it, apply, done. works great inside the session. but when i reboot gdm is upside down until i log in. according to the arch wiki (i use arch btw), GDM does not respect xorg.conf, so what i have to do is configure my screens inside my session, and then copy monitors.xml to the gdm config folder, so i do that. reboot, and gdm looks great, but once i log in, the screen is rendered upside down. in fact just visual . the activities button is rendered at the bottom, but to click it i still have to click the top left. my first tough was something like "its getting rotated twice, once when gdm come is and another when i log in" so i remove the user setting and leave the gdm config , reboot and now the screens are alright but the mouse cursor is inverted I've been trying various DEs last few month was "pure" KDE and now "pure" GNOME. so I'd like to keep using gdm if possible. anyone knows how to fix this? Screen not turning off after lokcing in GNOME Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:34 AM PST After the screen timeout or when I press Meta+L, the gnome lock screen appears and the screen goes turns off, but after 15 seconds, the screen turn back on and the screen is completely black. If I move the mouse a bit or press a key, the screen goes from black to gnome lock screen. I am using Arch Linux with GNOME on Xorg. Btw, if I use Wayland, the screen turns off after locking but does not turn back on again. I have to do a hard reboot. Is there any fix to this? [link] [comments] |
Can I store files in a USB drive with a linux distro? Posted: 12 Feb 2021 09:45 AM PST Let's say I create a botable USB drive, can I store files/portables apps inside of it, so I have some of my things in it when I plug it in a random computer? [link] [comments] |
Can't install any linux distro ! Posted: 12 Feb 2021 01:20 PM PST Hi! I just got new Acer Swift 3 (SF314-41) laptop without OS installed. Found out that any Linux distro installation is a problem. When I try to boot from USB stick I get errors (tried on Ubuntu, Linux mint, manjaro), iommu ivhd0: AMD-Vi: Event logged [PAGE_TAB_HARDWARE_ERROR device errors, but Windows installation on this laptop loads successfully. Another laptop boots successful from these USB sticks. Read it's recommended to launch in Legacy mode, but I have only UEFI. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
How to Make Pop OS show up in a Manjaro Grub menu. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 12:42 PM PST So, I am setting up a multiboot set up with Windows, Pop OS and Manjaro(possibly EndeavourOS). Right now I have Manjaro on a persistent USB; Pop OS on it's on SSD and Windows on it's own SSD. Eventually, I intend to move Both Manjaro and PopOS to another M.2 drive and have them share a /boot /swap and /home partition. But, right now I am just playing around with it trying to get it to work off a USB. Which it does. I can boot into any of the systems. But, when I boot to Manjaro I get the Manjaro grub, which is what I want. However, it does not have Pop OS listed. It has Windows Listed. But, not Pop OS. I have updated the Grub file in Manjaro with 'sudo update-grub'. The system is fully updated. So, is pop OS. I assume that because Pop OS uses Systemd-boot that it is conflicting or something. I know Pop OS has a guide that if you want to dual boot Windows and Pop OS you can move some of the Windows files into /boot/efi/EFI in Pop OS and than Windows will show up on a Pop OS boot. But, I wanted to use the Manjaro grub and just pick my OS from there. I just do not know why Manjaro grub is not seeing Pop OS. I tried to use grub-customizer. But, os-prober doesn't seem to see Pop OS either. So, idk what to do. I think that if I manually entered it into grub.cfg then it would work. But, I do not know what I would have to enter which is why I was hoping grub-customizer would do it. If anyone can explain this one I would appreciate it. Thank you. Note* I have done some internet searches and looked at the arch wiki and watched youtube videos. So, I did try to do some research. So if it is a simple answer sorry. [link] [comments] |

How do i install a newer version of a program? Posted: 12 Feb 2021 11:09 AM PST I'm running Ubuntu LTS and want to use the latest stable of KeepassXC, but the "Ubuntu Software" package manager only has v2.4.3 whereas i can install v2.6 on Windows. What's the right approach here? Do i need to add another PPA? Is there a guide on how this works and Do's and Don't's? I'm a hardcore Windows user trying to learn and use Linux more in order to become less dependent on it. [link] [comments] |
Something quick and useful for beginners. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 11:01 AM PST |
Posted: 12 Feb 2021 05:02 AM PST Hello! Normally I'm using DP, but I built myself a machine to mess around with (had hardware laying around). Since it uses integrated graphics (Vega 3) I have to use the motherboards HDMI connection, as it doesn't have a DP connection. The motherboards specs say it has HDMI 1.4. My monitor also supports HDMI 1.4 (btw, it doesn't support DVI). So I bought a cable which supports 1.4 as well. Therefore I should be able to output at a high refresh rate, right? Well, I'm on Mint 20 and it doesn't even show 1080p@75Hz or so. It is stuck at 59Hz (or 60Hz at lower resolutions. Even worse it wants to force VSync on me at certain resolutions (I don't care about tearing, get VSync away from me). I have turned VSync off in the settings as well. Before you ask, yes that machine benefits from higher refresh rates. So what do I do now? I'm new to Linux. Thanks for reading! [link] [comments] |
Need help creating a system image. Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:57 AM PST So I moved over to Linux a few months ago after doing extensive research and attempting to familiarize myself with Linux in general, though I'm still a bit of a noob. Right now, I'm running Garuda Linux on my system. The thing is, something went wrong during my first install and corrupted something that prevented me from using my administrator password. When I restarted my computer, the GRUB bootloader couldn't boot into the OS anymore so I attempted to restore it with a Timeshift backup that was created a few hours before it corrupted, but it still didn't work. So I reinstalled Garuda (interestingly enough it took 1/3 of the time so maybe something went wrong in installation?) and want to make a complete backup. Is it possible to create an ISO image or something along those lines to reinstall a perfect copy of what I have configured now? [link] [comments] |
Start computer after halt command Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:55 AM PST I just did the halt command on my Linux newly installed. Can't download anything, keep on getting background process error Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:42 AM PST Ok so like I got Cinnamon like an hour ago and I tried installing Google Chrome. It'll just be on the wait screen with no process seemingly done. When I gave up and tried doing an update it just said some process is being done...while nothing is downloading, etc. I also tried installing via terminal but same result I have no idea what I'm doing [link] [comments] |
