Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:12 PM PST I have a VM and it has Windows 10 LTSC fresh install always offline without any updates, so last update is late 2018. I downloaded an application and checked inside the Windows 10 VM and somehow Windows knows it has a digital certificate timestamped from 2020 to 2024? how does it know if it's offline and never been updated? also does this mean that the .exe i downloaded is 100% safe and not tampered with since it has a verified publisher status in windows? Installing Windows 95 on a Windows 2000 laptop Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:03 PM PST I own a 1998 Compaq 1260 laptop, it originally came with Windows 98 installed on it, but when I bought it from the son of the original owner on eBay, he told me that his father installed Windows 2000 on it around the time of release. I own this laptop for retro gaming, the main purpose of it, and also for toggling around, and I love Windows 2000, but I much prefer Windows 95. A lot of the games I own work better on Windows 95 from my recollection, some do not even work that well on Windows 2000. Would it be possible to install Windows 95 on this box? Would I have to buy a copy that has printed "For Compaq computers"? Is it worth doing this or should I stay with Win2K or even Windows 98? [link] [comments]

Spotify via Xbox Game Bar makes Windows think Windows key is held Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:35 PM PST When using the Xbox Game Bar (while playing a game), sometimes after closing the overlay, Windows will think the Windows key is still being held. Closing the overlay via Win+G or Esc seems to make no difference. The problem seems to show up much more often when using Spotify via Xbox Game Bar. The Game Bar works quite well when just using for voice chat. Playing Black Ops with my console friends, I never notice this problem. Constantly opening and closing the overlay to adjust audio levels or see performance doesn't cause any glitches. But, when I am playing alone I like to use Spotify through the Game Bar, mostly because it is easy to adjust audio levels on the fly. However, maybe every 2 out of 5 times I close the Game Bar, the Windows key gets "stuck". This is very frustrating while playing a game with a gamepad. I will close the overlay, and play with the controller for a couple of minutes. Then, when I want to use the keyboard, Windows acts as if every key I press is a Win+Shortcut. It's frustrating when I try to chat in the lobby and out of nowhere I open Cortana, the file explorer, or sometimes lock my PC while the game is still going on (lol). Is this a known problem? While I suspect this is linked to using Spotify with the GameBar, I'm not positive. This is just when I can recall it happening as this is mostly the only time I use it. I thought I might get more traction here than any Microsoft subreddit. [link] [comments]
Why can't I search for the Recycle Bin in the Start Menu? Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:38 PM PST 5cKuQzk.png (1037×1020) (imgur.com) Googling this is a mixed bag. I couldn't find any historic posts or search results that have the same issue, and other posts just mentioned that what I've done in the screenshot above should give me the result I'm after. It doesn't on my machine, and my colleagues' Windows machines have the same issue. To be clear, I have no problem with accessing the Recycle Bin using any one of the many other methods. Every app on my machine and my colleague's machines are searchable in the Start Menu Search, except Recycle Bin. There doesn't appear to be a way to make it searchable without third party software, which isn't practical to deploy to our fleet of Windows machines. Part of my job is migrating Mac users to our required platforms on Windows, and showing them how to access their apps is a part of that. It's a lot easier for them to understand, "search for your app from the start menu", than it is to understand "search for your app from the start menu, except for in X or Y cases, then you can find it a number of other ways, but not this way". I can't find a reason for this critical feature of the OS to be obfuscated in this way. [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Jan 2021 02:01 PM PST I use to use a lot of autohotkey scripts when I was on windows. I switched to linux and back again. Now I have a number of scripts. What do you guys use? Here's some I use Autohotkey: Python: Bash: I want more. I'm missing how I could click a button and get a QR code from whatever is in my clipboard. I may write that script next What do you guys like/use? [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:22 PM PST So I'm coming from Ubuntu. It seems like a pain to download any program that isn't from the Microsoft Store because then you have to manage where you store the .exe file. What are best practices? Am I missing something? [link] [comments]
My Microphone picks up sound, but it doesn't go to any programs Posted: 27 Jan 2021 04:26 PM PST I've had an issue for most of the day, where I can see my microphones - both USB and built-in to my laptop - are detecting sound in the Sound Settings, but the sound isn't going to any applications that use it - not Discord, not OBS, nothing. Is there anything I can do to fix it? [link] [comments]

System folders weirdness question Posted: 27 Jan 2021 02:54 PM PST So let's say I've got my Windows PC set up. I've got my system folders like C:\Users and C:\ProgramData, for example. If I plug in an external drive that was formerly a system drive and try to copy its Users and ProgramData folders to my system drive, it gets really weird. I deleted one once from C:\Users\username\Desktop\Users and it deleted my users folder at C:\Users and blew up. Why does it do this? What am I missing? [link] [comments]

Can you use Windows Server 2008 to play Valorant? Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:44 AM PST Hi, hope you are having a great afternoon, I really dislike Windows 10 if I'm honest (I don't mean to insult anyone) the only reason I still have it is because I play Valorant. Is it possible to run the game on Windows Server 2008? Thank you a lot for answering, and please don't get offended. [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:39 AM PST I don't know if the tittle makes much sense but my cousin wants to stream xbox games on my laptop but I don't really want to share my bookmarks and edge history since there is some work sensitive information on there and I might get in trouble if it gets leaked. I don't have a Microsoft account on my laptop because of the same reason. If I log in would my computer think this is my account and migrate everything over to it? [link] [comments] |
