Thinking about actually strapping down to learn this thing

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:23 AM PST

Essentially that. I grew up w/Linux, and haven't seen a Windows machine since I left high school. I'm not terrified of the command line, did some programming courses in high school, and must have installed at least a dozen distros by now, Slackware and Arch included. But I never really learned much - just went back and forth on forums, sifting through recommended commands & approaches until one seemed like it'd work.

I'd like to change that this year, and have wanted to for a while actually. I'm thinking of picking up some books like "How Linux Works" and "The Linux Administration Handbook" and just going through them since I like structure when learning something. The hiccup - I'd not want to put in more than say 30-45min a day doing this, and I'd probably alternate it w/some kind of programming language.

So the question - would I just be spinning my wheels doing under an hour of Linux study, 3 days a week? Or could I actually get reasonably competent?

    Different Linux Distributions

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 07:15 AM PST

    Hi guys!

I apologize for the stupid question, but gonna ask anyway, considering the name of this subreddit.

I am brand new in the Linux area and as far as I read, I did understand that Linux is not an actual OS, but a kernel for different Linux distributions like Ubuntu/Kali/Debian etc.

I am using a Windows 10 machine and yesterday managed to put Ubuntu on it using virtual machine!

My questions is, considering every single distribution is on its own, how can I use more than one distribution at the same time?

Let's forget about the Windows and say for instance that I have only Ubuntu running as OS on my PC (just imagine it). How can I use let's say Kali as well, Debian, Red Hat, on my PC while using Ubuntu?

Are they OSs as well? How can I use the entire distribution quantity of Linux?

How do I permanently remove overlappaing taskbar in Ubuntu 20.04?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 04:53 AM PST

    This is my problem:https://imgur.com/a/vxVV0ze

This keeps happening whenever(1 out of 2 times) I open my laptop from sleep. Right now I made a desktop launcher with the command killall gnome shell or something like that. It works, but the problem is I have to do that everytime the problem appears. I want a permanent solution to this problem. I'm pretty sure the problem arises due to some extension.

    Thanks

Is a 128GB SSD enough to dual boot?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 02:42 PM PST

Hello everybody! How are you doing? I bought a laptop that has a hybrid storage of 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, and I was wondering where I should install linux.

Windows comes preinstalled on the SSD, and I wanted to know if there's enough space for me to dual boot KDE Neon on that SSD.

And in case you don't recommend that, what would be the pros and cons of installing the distro on the HDD and leaving the SSD for windows only?

I need both systems on my laptop, I need windows for a few programs I need for college and editing with Photoshop, and I need linux for programming and using it as a daily driver because I hate windows.

I don't like the idea of using VMs, I want to dual boot (I don't need to switch the systems often, I would only use windows when I have an exam in college).

Thanks a lot in advanced! excuse my english, greetings from Argentina!

All linux computers unable to connect to wifi?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 01:09 PM PST

I am not looking for a specific answer, rather I am looking for a general reason as to why both would stop working all of a sudden

    INFO :

Distro: Peppermint OS (first laptop) & Deepin OS (second laptop)

I have using Linux on both of my laptops for the better part of the year with no issues wifi at all.

One laptop is my main second is for a Plex Server.

I was using my laptops as normal yesterday and even this morning. All of a sudden I was unable to connect to wifi on either of them.

So earlier today I posted about my laptop not being able to connect to Wi-Fi I thought that it was unique to that laptop but I just booted up my second laptop which also has Linux on it and it is also unable to connect to Wi-Fi.

I feel like this is most likely a problem with the router or something not 100% sure .

Please help ASAP this is very important, thank you in advance

    edit: info

Can Ubuntu 20.04.1 and Windows 10 run the same programs?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 01:07 PM PST

I've recently set up a dual-boot system using rEFInd, with Ubuntu and Windows installed in their own partitions on my 256GB SSD. I created an NTFS storage partition with what was left of that SSD, and I also have two HDDs for more storage.

My question is, could Ubuntu and Windows both execute the same programs if they're in a folder both OS can access? Ideally I wouldn't want to install the same programs like Steam twice.

    Thanks :)

    Hardisk not showing bootloader

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 01:00 PM PST

I was installing debian on a lap running win 10, the installation was successful, the grub bootloader failed to install, and the windows bootloader isn't working either so i couldn't boot into any system. Luckily my laptop has 2 hdd slots so i put a hdd that has kali linux on it and i was able to boot from it and access all my OS. The issue is if i remove my second hdd it doesn't boot.

Is there a better way to navigate manuals?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 08:29 AM PST

Lets say i want to know what the command `ls -ltr` does, my current procedure is like that:

    - `man ls`

    - `/ -l` (search for the argument with the tag and whitespace to get less false matches)

    - Same for every other argument

I feel like there is a much better way to do that that i dont know, is there a programm that would list me all manual entries from the arguments i provided? For example:

`supermanual ls -ltr` would list me the title of the ls command with explainations from ONLY l, s and r tags.

If there is nothing like that would probably put it on my projcet list ^^I know about the sites like explainshell.com but i dont want to open my browser everytime.

    Thanks!

Linux lagging while running dual monitor

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:50 AM PST

So a friend lent me a GPU (R7 370 2GB) and I'm using it as my main GPU while using my on board graphics to hook up a secondary TV which I mainly use to listen to music/watcha anime. However KDE Plasma is super laggy on my main monitor and the system feels irresponsive. Does anyone have a fix (I'm running Manjaro KDE Plasma)

Question 101, yeah, it's the "what distro" stuff, only more hardware specific

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 11:44 AM PST

What distro should I choose for an HP Laptop, running on: AMD A6-7310 APU with AMD Radeon R4, 4GB RAM, x64 architecture? I'm only asking details here, perhaps something I could not account for as a first timer Linux user, hardware-related only. If you may take into account my considerations up to date, I'm thinking of KDE Neon, Mint 20, Manjaro, Open Suse. What do you think?

I'm interested in exploring different types of DEs - ones that aren't a typical Windows clone. What do you guys recommend trying?

Are there any security flaws with dual booting?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 11:13 AM PST

I know in general Linux does not really have any viruses or malicious hackers so not much to keep in mind with just a Linux setup. But can dual booting introduce security concerns to be aware of?

Is there anything that I can do about this issue? "No memory controllers found"

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:10 AM PST

I just read a post in r/linux where I found about ECC which lead me to this tool/command named edac-util. One top commenter mentioned this tool in this way:

If you have ECC RAM, then run edac-util and it will tell you how many problems it has detected.

My 1st question is, how do I know whether the RAM I have is ECC RAM?

Anyway, I installed edac-util and run it. It gave me this output:

    Ubuntu 20.10 | GNOME 3.38

2nd question: Is this a problem? If yes, then what can I do about it? ELI5 if I'm not understanding the situation correctly.

How do I set LightDM to start budgie-desktop?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:58 PM PST

OS: ArchLinux32 After grub successfully loads Arch, I get an error

Failed to start Light Display Manager

Even though I have lightdm.service enabled in systemd.

    Arch wiki it says...

Choose Budgie Desktop session from a display manager of choice, or modify xinitrc to include Budgie Desktop:

I don't see where the lightdm wiki shows how to configure it for a specific desktop environment. I know I can always use the xinitrc file but I want to know how to get it to work with lighdm.

please ask for more info about my system if needed

What is WSL2? Resource Usage? Gaming?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 02:47 AM PST

I recently read about WSL2. i am not quite sure what it actually is. Is it just a VM? or anything else? Is resource usage similar to Linux or is it still resource heavy? Will I be able to play windows games on it? I have a low end laptop. If WSL2 allows me to play Windows Games (CSGO, Valorant, PUBG Lite etc.) and uses less resources in the background than Windows, I will be happy.
