    New Laptop?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:06 AM PST

Hello! I recently busted my old laptop and had to pay for a data recovery, the hardrive on my old laptop is a goner. It was a 2015/2016 Lenovo laptop, I use to run Sony Vegas pro 12, Photoshop CS6, Star Wars Battlefront II(2005) and then the usual computer stuff.

I need a new laptop, but I need one that would be very similar to my old one so i could go buisness as usual,i want to be able to run all of the previously mentioned softwares, without breaking the bank.

The guy that helped me get my computer data back told me some things to look out for, when it comes to editing, and rendering videos in Sony Vegas Pro 12.

    He said, look for

I7, or its equal (is that the processor??🤷) 16 GB of Ram 1 terabyte hardrive

Is it possible for anyone to help me out? Is the computer guy right? Do i need all of those things to go back to buisness as usual? What laptop do you think i would need to appropriatley run Sony Vegas Pro 12, and Photoshop CS6?

    Thank you so much!

Can you use two laptops for one thing?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 01:20 PM PST

I would like two "combine" two laptops. I would use the newer one for power like CPU and GPU and the other one for storage. I could connect them to a monitor. Would that work?

Laptop suggestions for PLC programming, SCADA ETC

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 01:02 PM PST

Q: Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

A: 4000 AUD give or take

Q: Are you open to refurbs/used?

    A: Yes

Q: How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

A: Ultrabook, performance, battery life and build quality are all important to me

Q: How important is weight and thinness to you?

A: No super bothered but not interested in rugged laptops

Q: Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

A: 15 inch preferred, no smaller

Q: Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

A: yes to CAD, PLC software etc. Not exactly sure what programs ill end up running as i'm heading off on a new career direction but from what i've read 16gb ram minimum (so id prefer to have 32gb) and a SSD HD

Q: If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    A: N/A

Q: Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    A: Keyboard, reliable build quality

Q: Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

A: One of the most important things to me is the keyboard. i am currently using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) and i love the keyboard layout and feel. i do not want a keyboard with a num pad included. If it weren't for all the software i expect to run being windows based i would buy another macbook because this one has lasted me 7 years now without trouble.

    Laptop accessories for MSI

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 12:54 PM PST

I recently bought a MSI Modern 14 A10RAS laptop. It's a lovely beastie and a pleasure to use. Since it was expensive, I want to protect it. I've been looking for a keyboard cover and a protective shell, and can't find anything. Are there any companies that sell something that might work?

    Laptop screen upgrade question

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 08:38 AM PST

So I currently have the Asus Rog Strix GL731GT laptop with the 17.3in full HD 60hz screen. I want to upgrade to a higher refresh rate panel, I know this model also comes in 120hz and 144hz versions but both of those versions use a 40 pin display whereas the 60hz is a 30 pin. I've done my research and I know that this makes the upgrade virtually impossible but I also read about someone with a similar situation with an Alienware laptop and found out he had a 40 pin compatible motherboard and they used a 40 pin to 30 pin adapter to use a 30 pin display on it.

I'm wondering if anyone has cracked one of these open and confirmed that same scenario here? I tried to pull the motherboard model but I just get the Asustek G731GT model.

watching Anime on a TN panel

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 12:01 PM PST

Hello, I am getting a new laptop, but it has a TN panel. So I was wondering if I look straight into the screen, can the image look good? (By look good I mean can I watch anime comfortably on that display?)The resolution is 1920 x 1080 and its 15 inch, the laptops name is Lenovo V155. I have heard a lot of bad things about the TN panel so I'm pretty worried about the image quality, the viewing angles don't matter since I will always be looking straight into it, thank you a lot if you found the time to answer, best of luck, stay safe.

2nd hand ThinkPad for 2D Autocad and Sketchup + Vray.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 08:12 AM PST

I'm in a really really tight budget. Is it worth buying a 2nd Hand 6th Gen i5 ThinkPad E560 for the programs mentioned above? It is around $320usd

It has 8gb RAM (Upgradable to 16), 240gb SSD, 2.4ghz

Researched about the model a little bit and I think it came out around 2014-2016. So far the requirements for autocad and sketchup are met. Only use Autocad for 2D Plans plus I'm not really a pro Sketchup + VRay user.

However, based on your experience with old models, will this hinder the performance or will the performance depend on the RAM and other factors?

Ryzen 7 vs I7 performance and Linux compatibility

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 11:42 AM PST

I am looking to get a new work laptop for doing data-science in linux. I was hoping reddit could help me with two questions.

1). Is the performance increase of Ryzen 7 over intel worth prioritizing? How is 4700U vs I7-10510U, how about I7-1165G7

2). Will AMD processors generally be less compatible with linux distros?

    Thanks! =)

USB-C to 2xHDMI and USB hub

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 11:19 AM PST

    Hi,

I have a setup similar to this and I would like to make it more "plug and play style" with USB-C hub.

Is there any option to connect two 1080p monitors with hdmi, usb for external keyboard and maybe jack for headphones to one USB-C port on my laptop with hub?

I know some hubs only miror the image from one external monitor to other and I am not sure, how many things can be connected to one usb-c.

Also what would be the refresh rate if I connect two monitors?

    Thanks for help.

Need help with purchasing a laptop

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:47 AM PST

    Hey everyone :)

Long story short I have a work laptop but need a second laptop for everyday use and was wondering if anyone could help me out.

I'm looking for a second laptop for some casual photography editing and to be able to handle the odd game like Age of empire's

My cousin is selling his Dell XPS 9360 for £600 which has rarely been used what so ever. Was wondering if this is a good option or should I look for a new laptop around that price range ?

    Domestic source of laptop fans?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:38 AM PST

I have a Samsung NP940 in which the fan bearing is starting to go. (Fan model: KDB0605HDA02.) I ordered one online, but apparently, it's coming from China because they said it will be about 25 days...

Can anyone recommend a domestic source for such things?

Thanks and Happy New Year, Everyone!

Out of the loop on laptops. What should I get?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:25 AM PST

    Hey all.

I'm looking to buy a laptop on the cheaper side. I have very little performance needs. All I need it for is browsing the web and League of Legends. I'm not picky about graphics.

I've had some cheap laptops in the past which could run LOL but after some time they would just slow down to a halt and simple tasks such as opening chrome would take forever.

    Any recommendations?

Dell XPS 15 9500 can only write to SD card when card is in locked position

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 10:23 AM PST

I noticed that my XPS 15 9500 can write to an SD card only when the tab is slid to the locked position. When it is unlocked, it is read only. I've tried this with several cards, and it is all that way. Called tech support. They told me that is the way it is. No explanation given. This is like buying a washing machine, and their saying, "Oh, when the button is in the off position, it's actually on." Not that this is a big issue, but it feels like it is a reflection of wider nonchalance and poor quality control. I'm of the mind of returning the laptop, but just want check — am I being crazy here?
