Should I buy a 'Linux Command Line Second edition' book by William Shotts? Posted: 22 Jan 2021 04:02 AM PST Although I am a Windows user, I am very interested in Linux. It is a beautiful operating system and it's crazy what freedom you have in it as I've read about it. I tried Ubuntu and Manjaro distoros, but as I've learned my lesson, Linux as the operating system may be complex and difficult for new user. Hell, I didn't and still I don't know how to install things on it, but once I somehow succeeded in installing Minecraft on it. Then, I found this book - Linux Command Line: Complete Introduction. It's well rated book and I am interested in it, I am interested in learning about this beautiful OS more. Is it worth it? [link] [comments] |
Please help. Lost root privileges Posted: 22 Jan 2021 12:38 PM PST I have a dual boot system with Kubuntu and win10. In Kubuntu I unchecked "Enable administrator privileges for this user". Please can you help me get this back. I really don't know how to undo this error. I can't install anything now from Discover, the software center in Kubuntu.. it keeps asking me for the password for root. Hope you can help. Edit I tried sudo -s. That didn't work Edit. SOLVED. How do I switch back to Unity from LXDE? Posted: 22 Jan 2021 02:40 AM PST I have an Nvidia Jetson nano and while installing some things and updating I found myself on LXDE desktop on the next reboot. Everything I search tells me to use a dropdown menu on the login screen to change the desktop back to Unity, however I dont get a login screen on boot. When I logout I just get a black screen and I am forced to power cycle the jetson to boot back up to the desktop. [link] [comments] |
Screen tearing Ubuntu vs Manjaro! Posted: 22 Jan 2021 02:40 AM PST Hey guys! I've been distro hopping for sometime now. My question is, screen tearing exist only in ubuntu and ubuntu based distros. Why? I know it's because of Nvidia drivers. I have found some solutions to fix it too. But why just ubuntu? I was really impressed by performance of manjaro. It wasn't stable tho. So I'm currently on xubuntu for stability and simplicity. But can someone explain me, why screen tearing isn't there on manjaro? and why on ubunut? I understand that manjaro has rolling release updates, so i guess it has better driver. But why it isn't there in ubuntu? And this issue is a pretty common one, so why haven't official devs solved this maybe by providing better drivers? [link] [comments] |
I recently found a Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 and need some advice please. Posted: 22 Jan 2021 12:05 AM PST This beast is in mint condition but it's dated. It came with Windows XP installed and it's from 2004 but it's an amazingly built laptop. Waterproof, shockproof, touchscreen, GPS. This is a military grade PC. I did as many hardware upgrades as possible. SSD hard drive, 5ghz WiFi card and max ram. It won't install windows 10 it's too old. It barely runs Windows 7. I need a lightweight Linux that is similar to Windows since that's the OS I'm most familiar with. These are the specs: Intel 1.3Ghz Pentium M CPU 256mb onboard ram 1gb DDR1 ram (this is max bty) 256gb mSATA SSD with 2.5 ide drive adapter [link] [comments] |
Looking to jump from Windows to Linux. Couple quick questions. Posted: 22 Jan 2021 01:43 PM PST I've been making a push to supporting more open source and DRM-free software in recent weeks. One thing I'm looking into is switching my primary OS from Windows 10 to Linux. I've used Ubuntu a little in the past, but it's been a few years. One thing for me is that I play a lot of games, so that's the one thing I have noticed that I want to do that isn't likely to be wide open on Linux, though I know it's made big strides in recent years. I don't like the idea, but I have a lot of stuff on my Steam account, so I would likely still use that when there's no other option for games. A few questions: 1) I pay for Game Pass and I'm guessing there's no getting that running on Linux in any simple way, since it runs off an app from the windows app store. But is there a good way to run those apps? Or should I dual boot? 2) if I install Ubuntu to a flash drive and run it off of that for a while, can I easily transfer that installation to my SSD if I decide to make the jump? 3) Simple one: Xbox controller support. Is it simple plug and play like on Windows? Or do I need to do a bit extra legwork? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Network problems on fresh installs of pop and Manjaro KDE Posted: 22 Jan 2021 01:38 PM PST I've been using Linux daily for a few years, and decided to switch distros on my laptop. On both OSes I could ping my desktop and even print to my wireless printer, but I get a destination host unreachable error when pinging my gateway and have no internet connection. My router settings are all standard with just a couple ports forwarded. Before this, I was running arch with GNOME, so I would imagine it's not a hardware problem or an issue with NetworkManager. On pop it seems I have an internet connection on boot long enough to get a notification that I have updates available, but by the time I can open Firefox or try to install updates, it's gone. Also, other devices on my network can connect to the internet just fine with an identical configuration. Do any networking wizards have any idea what my problem could be? I'm stumped Edit: I'm using pop 20.10 and manjaro 20.2.1 [link] [comments] |

I want to switch to Linux is there a way to also run Windows 10? Posted: 22 Jan 2021 09:14 AM PST The title is pretty self explanatory, I want to run Linux as my main OS and then run Windows 10 as a second OS on a hard drive dedicated to it for stuff like games that don't work on Linux even with a VM. What would be the best way of going about that? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

I have some corrupted files after Ubuntu crash, what can be done? Posted: 22 Jan 2021 12:00 PM PST Hey all. I wrote a post about this topic earlier. My Ubuntu 20.04 install broke and i already saved everything by saving the files from the broken install with a Live Ubuntu USB and transferring it to my harddrive. The problem is just that i have one .kdbx password file that contains a password that i really badly need but this file is corrupted. It was the only file that was opened when the Ubuntu install crashed. I cannot open it. The folder which contains several key files all work except the one i actually need. Is there any way i can recover a corrputed file? I really need help with this and i'd be really greatful if anyone can help me! [link] [comments] |

Due to this the battery will start and stop charging randomly. Every time when this happens there will be a beap sonund which is very much annoying for me. Is there any way that I can disable that sound. I already tried in the settings but nothing changed. Currently I am using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE [link] [comments] |
Windows 10 "repaired" my secondary SSD and now it's read-only on Linux... Posted: 22 Jan 2021 03:58 AM PST I'm running W10 on an NVME SSD, Pop-os on another SSD, and then I have another SSD for my media. When booting into W10 it "repaired" it, and now it's read only on Linux. Wtf does W10 do this? How do I prevent this from happening? [link] [comments] |
Switching distros without a /home partition Posted: 22 Jan 2021 10:59 AM PST For various reasons, I would like to install Ubuntu with only a single partition, no separate swap or home. I've read that with swap it doesn't matter anymore whether it's a swapfile or a partition. With /home though, if my /home is in a directory, how can I switch distros in the future. Would simply copying the contents of /home directory somewhere else, installing the new distro over the new one, and copying back the contents of my old /home to my new distro's /home work? I know it's much easier to have a /home partition, but I'm willing to go through this slight inconvenience as I'm not going to be doing this often, and it allows me to efficiently use the small amount of disk space I can give to ubuntu in my Win+Ubuntu dual boot setup. Is There Any Advantage To Using Ubuntu Server Over Raspbian Lite? Posted: 22 Jan 2021 10:57 AM PST So I have a Raspberry Pi 3B+ and want to use it as a local webserver. I thought I'd try out Ubuntu Server. But I find that Ubuntu Server isn't as responsive as Raspbian Lite and now I'm having trouble getting remote access to the Pi with SSH. So I kind of want to switch back to Raspbian Lite, but is there anything I'd be missing out on besides the Ubuntu repositories? [link] [comments] |

Is there a guide for one gpu passthrough? Posted: 22 Jan 2021 06:54 AM PST I'm currently using Manjaro with an AMD Ryzen 2600 and an RX 580. Most tutorials on how to do a gpu passthrough require two graphics cards, however my cpu doesn't have integrated graphics. How should I go about the procedure or is there a guide with my specs in mind? [link] [comments] |

Does my "Cross Install" make sense? Posted: 22 Jan 2021 10:03 AM PST Hello. I have migrated to Debian recently and opted for netinstall. I have two old computers that I repurposed as backup PC's which I am currently using. PC Phenom Phenom X4 9750 - DDR2 2GB - Nvidia 8200 PC Athlon Athlon II X2 250 - DDR3 2GB - Gigabyte 210 Rev 5.0 I decided to make a Debian installation for my Athlon PC by using my Phenom PC since my Athlon PC had a broken PSU that couldn't supply 12V through Molex/SATA power lines. So I decided to connect my HDD to the Phenom PC and install Debian there. I successfully installed Debian with XFCE using nonfree netinst cd but I am curious if it will work. When I used Sparky with the Phenom PC lots of time ago. I kept getting "Couldn't find processor microcode" errors and I am afraid of the same and similar things happening with this "Cross Installation" So In the end, Does "Cross Installing" Debian make sense? Semi-noob on Gentoo, how to begin learning things? Posted: 22 Jan 2021 09:06 AM PST I don't have much experience with Linux, I've only played for a while with Mint, Ubuntu, Manjaro, Arch and Artix before finally coming to Gentoo because I wanted to learn everything in the process and have as much control as possible. Also, installing Gentoo sounds difficult so I wanted to boost my self-confidence with it, and now I'm typing this from Gentoo! But the problem is, now that I have installed XFCE, there are suddenly many unknown things that I'm interested to learn about. Some things are not set up properly, like my WiFi, audio, os-prober (for dual boot) etc. I don't know how and from where I should begin learning. There are lots of commands that I don't know of, also lots of technical concepts of Linux that I don't know. My future goals are LFS and BSD, but I didn't choose them for now because I wanted something to use as a "daily-driver" that would teach me things gradually and in practice. I'd like to know your advice on how to start learning things at this point. What sources are the best? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
