Should I buy a router or keep using the one given by my internet provider?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 02:00 PM PST

I have been given this router by my internet provider and I rent it but have been giving me credit every month for the past 5 years so basically the router is free for me.

I'm going to be installing 2 APs in my house and I was thinking if I should also buy by own router for the first time.

Have a 60/20 internet service but computers are only getting 25/16. 12 devices connected. Is this normal?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 12:56 PM PST

Hi. I am paying for a 60/20 internet service and when I run the speed test directly with an Ethernet cable, I record that speed (60/20). I just bought a Netgear Nighthawk AC 1750 router last weekend and whenever I run the speed test (WiFi), via the router app, I get 55/18. However, when I run on the computers, I only get 25/16 coming from the router. I do have 10 devices connected to the internet (4 wired). Is this normal? Is the sub 60/20 speed due to the number of devices? Or is the new router faulty?

    All test use Ookla.

Could a steel standing frame block WiFi signal?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:54 PM PST

I plan to place a WiFi router (see red lines in image - https://postimg.cc/56TyKnLg) on a pole but behind a metal standing frame with a metal crown (crown is covered with flowers, see white circle in image - https://postimg.cc/56TyKnLg).

Will that metal frame block my WiFi signal if I place a laptop on the stage?

    Archer A7 vs C80?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:05 AM PST

I'm looking to get a budget router, around £70. It seems the A7 is highly recommended but also looking at the C80. Which one should I go for? Or is there a better option at the same price?

Mainly having issues with signal in the house (the walls are pretty old and seem to block wifi a fair bit)

New home network, looking at ER-X and a UniFi 6 Lite AP, Noob

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:28 PM PST

    Hey HN!

So I'll be moving into a new home soon (~1800sf) and it is already run with CaAT 5e. It also has a network panel in the main bedroom closet, as well as a prewired AP in the pantry.

I'm fairly new to all of this, and have in the past gone with a combined AIO router/Wifi setup. At the advice of this forum, I am trying to figure out what I would need to get for this home network setup.

I'm in a low internet speed area in Texas, and will only be getting 200 down and 20 up (could upgrade later, but currently see no need). Also, the home comes with a switch that will connect all of the wall ports.

Here is what I have come up with:

Modem: ARRIS SURFboard SB6190 (already have)

    Router: EdgeRouter X

POE Injector: TP-LINK 802.3af Gigabit PoE Injector

AP: UniFi 6 Lite Access Point

Later if I decide to expand a bit I might add another UniFi 6 Lite Access Point and a UniFi Switch 8 60W. So even though I have a techie background (mainly desktop IT) its been quite a few years since that, and I'm out of the loop. Can you please help this noob out? Do the selections look right? Would you change anything?

    Help !

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:51 PM PST

I live in a rural area, and the only ISP is Reliance Connects. They wont let us pay for a fiber line, and no other ISP comes to our house. The internet speeds I get are just simply not enough for the amount of people in my house. Is there anything I could do? Am I stuck with terrible internet forever?

Building a new home - Started thinking about the home wire network. Could you use some advice.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:02 AM PST

    Hi Guys,

I'm the early stages of building a house and I just started thinking about how to setup the home network. I don't have much experience with networking so I've been browsing a bit and trying to collect as much information as possible. So far this is what I got. I would welcome any advice or recommendations. I'm not trying to go overboard but since it's a new build I would like to invest a bit of money into setting it properly.

I have a floor plan of the house here.

    • Its a single floor bungalow.

    • I'm in Europe and specifically here we don't use a lot of dry wall. The house will be framed with ytong. Meaning they will chisel a channel for the electrical and ethernet cables. Then fill it with concrete/plaster. It's a lot messier than dealing with drywall. And once it's in....it's in.

    • I've added 3 drops to the one bedroom which will be an office.

    • The house is located in a village and taking with neighbours the current fastest speed I can get is up to 1Mbps.

    A couple questions.

    • Should I get Cat6a to future proof it? Once the lines are in I can't/won't want to take them out. But in 5, 10, 15 years I could see our local ISP offering faster speeds.
    • I don't want to put any switches in the wall. So each drop and access point would have it's own line running back to the rack in the technical room.
    • Any suggestions on the placement of the drops? I don't want to go overboard here. My office will be used for work and gaming and maybe the setup of another computer. Living room will just have a TV.
    • Which type of shielded ethernet cable should I get?

    Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Can my ISP router have same name as mesh network

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:38 PM PST

I have entry level mesh set up at home BT Mini Whole Home Wi-Fi which is connected to my ISP router. ISP speed is 70 Mbps.

I would like to use advantage of router wifi to get even better coverage. Is this good idea to keep router SSID name and password same as mesh? Thanks

How tightly can I hug an outside corner when mounting an outdoor gel filled cat6?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:29 AM PST

Need to hug an outside corner for the mounting of my cat6 outdoor cables. They're kind of rigid with the gel and I'm scared bending them straight 90 will damage them in some way. Am I being paranoid?

Can I go straight 90 degrees with a Mounting bracket on ~2" of each side of the corner? I left a little slack and it looks sloppy, I don't wanna go too tight and damaged the Cable though. Looking for advice.

Asus RT-AC88U client to client SSH/VNC not working

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 08:10 PM PST

I have an RT-AC88U router to which my PC is connected to via ethernet. I also have a couple of Raspberry Pi's (3B+ and 4)that I want to do some work on in a headless way. Configured the RPi's and enabled SSH, installed VNC viewer but when it came to testing the connection through my PC (putty) it times out. I tried disabling my AV firewall, disabling the router firewall, and even put port forwarding. Still no luck. I went through different troubleshooting guides and I kept hitting a wall. I decided to pull an old dusty TP-Link TL WDR3500 and enabled a different WiFi network on it to which I then connected the RPis (WiFi) and my PC (ethernet). Lo and behold the SSH now works and so does VNC. I can't figure out how or why the inital setup is not working.

The odd-er part is that I have a third RPi (1 B) through which I can sporadically SSH into through the Asus router.

Advice on Ethernet cable run to detached unit

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 08:09 PM PST

I want to run an Ethernet cable from my main house to a detached unit in the back. After doing some reading, I gather that the proper way to do this is to install Ethernet wall jacks (which I do not already have) into both structures, then run an outdoor-rated Ethernet cable between each.

Being cheap and lazy, can I get away with plugging the outdoor-rated Ethernet cable directly into a router inside the main house then run that directly to the other unit? Anything that makes this a Very Bad Idea and not recommended?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 08:50 AM PST

So everyday I turn on my computer I have spikes that goes from 30 to 400 ping in games and download speed usually 1.5mb/s
Every single day I flush DNS restart my router and sometimes works at first sometimes I need to do that 3 times until works.
I know it works when my ping on online games is 17 and my download speed goes to 30mb/s.

    Home Rack Placement

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:15 PM PST

    Hi all,

Looking for any feedback on home rack placement…included a picture to help visualize https://imgur.com/a/MxzGoPv

Background: new construction home with completion in the next ~4 months. I have a AV closet off theater room where I plan to home run all the CAT6 drops (~60), in ceiling (12 zones), living room (5.1), theater (7.2.4) wiring, and conduit runs. I already purchased a Middle Atlantic BGR 45U rack with a 32 inch depth, casters, and plexiglass door. This will house the switches, amps, and AVR's.

Looking at the size of the rack compared to the room, I'm worried it might not have enough space for a rack of this size. Since the rack is 32" deep, need to allow room for cabling, I might not be able to use the door. That would be OK, but a bit of a bummer. Given it will be on castors I should be able to slide it out to access the rear cabling as needed. Overall, are there best practices on how much room to allow behind the rack and maneuver in a situation like this?

    Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Port forwarding when the router's WAN interface uses an IP address from a private subnet

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:44 PM PST

I know very little about networking. I'm trying to host a server for a video game off of my own computer, since I'm currently stuck at home due to Covid, and long story short, I found out why it wasn't working. My WAN ip is in a range of 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255, and, from what I understand, this is a "private subnet", and thus, I cannot use my router to port forward.

I was wondering if there was a way around this, without having to call my internet provider and change the configuration of my router.

    Wifi 6 WAP's - TP-Link EAP660 HD or Zyxel NWA210AX or Engenius EWS377AP or Unifi UAP6 LR or Netgear WAX218?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:18 PM PST

AS the title suggests: Does anyone have any insight into these AP's and the companies in general? Have any of you encountered, implemented in-service or researched these AP's?

I have been trying to overhaul my prosumer wifi network to newer wifi 6 AP's. I know wifi 6E is announced but I don't see myself going in that direction for a few years.

My main goals are to have good:

    1) Range, speed and mutiple stream handling (not best and greatest but stable and solid - MU-MIMO, B/W, throughput, etc.)

    2) Seamless roaming between access points (handoff).

    3) Managebility for AP's (configs, backup and restore, easy of use)

    4) F/W updates (regular updates and patches to 0-day vulns.)

    5) Hardware life - Longetivity and service life.

    6) ASS - After Sales Service aka Customer Support.

I don't mind spending a bit more but I want to do this right once and for all. I know that there are other big name players like Ruckus, Aruba, Meraki, etc., but they are too out of my range buget-wise. Looking have two AP's and a controller (if needed) but that's all I am looking to buy. budget of around $200-$300 per AP. I would like that there isn't a recurring cost of operate them (Ex. - Netgear Insight Management).

Any input, any thoughts on this appreciated and welcomed. If there anything that I am missing, please help me understand.

Lastly, I want to thank this wonderfull community for helping out.

    Thank You and Much Appreciated!

Need help with selecting router ( new to wifi)

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 02:30 PM PST

Hi I apologize if this is a silly question but I am quite new to wifi.... i onyl recently found out im using a "gen 3" router - the linksys e2500 and the person helping me coudlnt even find the model at first.

So I believe I am using a MESH network at home right now. (the Covr system) and I am looking to upgrade my wifi. I did a quick search and apparently according to :

" (26) Don't WASTE MONEY On An Expensive WiFi Router - What You ACTUALLY NEED! - YouTube "

i THINK*** the triband will help me more than a dual band since it will help me lessen the Mbps lost to maintaining the connection to the mesh systems? I was wondering if I could get some confirmation on this or if i completely misunderstood the concept. the router im looking into as well ( the dual band) has faster speeds though ... which do you think is better?

    please advise and thanks.

here are the two routers I am currently in between ( there are 5 people in my hosue that uses wifi regularly)

    NETGEAR Nighthawk Wireless AC2100 Dual-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi 5 Router (R7200-100CNS) | Best Buy Canada

    Linksys Wireless AC2200 Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi 5 Router (MR8300-CA) | Best Buy Canada

Woke up this morning to two browser windows open to my Xfinity gateway login. Was someone trying to get in to my computer?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:43 AM PST

As stated in the title, I woke up this morning to my normal browser windows open that I left open before going to bed, only there were two new windows open to my Xfinity login site. Not the xfinity.com site, but the one you get when you type your gateway ip address as though I were trying to login to my network. Is there something that would cause that to happen or was someone trying to get in to my network?

If it is the latter what should I do to prevent it in the future? Nothing seems to have been changed or messed with.

I am a simpleton with a Bufferbloat issue.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 12:01 PM PST

With the current WFH situation, my wife and I now share an internet connection throughout the day. I am self-employed providing remote coaching services via ZOOM and she occasionally works with GIS data located on an offsite server.

Lately, we have been experiencing unsustainable slowdowns. My first step was to upgrade our internet from 150/15 to 500/20, which I thought would provide a solution. If anything, it made matters worse.

While all of our devices are capable of reaching those speeds, we are suffering from some pretty serious bufferbloat. Our connection scores an A/A+ for quality but the Bufferbloat is routinely a D. If every other device is off, the score is a B or a C. If I fiddle with the limited QOS on the router, I am able to get the bloat score to an A but our connection goes from a steady 350/18+ to 20/10.

Our current set up is a Technicolor TC4400 Modem and a TP-Link Archer AX50 Router with devices connected via both wire and wireless. Unfortunately, her work computer is a wireless connection; however, with ideal conditions the PC is able to sustain 400/20 regularly and it is less then 40 feet away from the TP-Link router.

What is the best way to solve this issue? I am willing to spend up to 500CND dollars but cheaper is always better. I am also moderately technically savvy; however, I would like something I can spend an afternoon setting up and then ignore for the rest of my life. Lastly, we can likely route Cat-5 to the office, but would prefer to avoid a trip to the crawl space.

AT&T Fiber with Orbi CBK752: Am I required to use AT&T Modem?

Wifi To A Metal Pole Barn

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:43 AM PST

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but am looking for some other opinions.

My father-in-law just built a metal sided pole barn that he's going to use for auto repair / man cave. He wants to get internet out to the building which is roughly 100ft (30m) from their access point. WiFi signal is spotty at best when inside the building. He is looking to stream tv while out there. Doesn't need to be top quality video quality, just looking for at least 720 without interruptions.

My thought was that we were going to have to run a cable from the house to the new building and add access that way. But I just wanted to make sure I'm not missing some magical technology as I'm not the most experienced with network setup, outside of a single access point.

    DECO M4 opinions

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:48 AM PST

    Hi all,

Right now my house is set up with 2 TP-Link wall plugs. Now the issue is that when I cross from one end to the other, Wifi remains connected to the wall plug furthest away. I did some research and I found the DECO M4. Now I don't have any experience with this M4 so I am writing here to see if you guys have any experience in this and help me out in my decision. In every room I have a CAT6 cable which is going straight to the router.

    Things I need clarification on:

Does the DECO need to replace the current home router?

My speed is 1000mbps so not sure if the M4 is the best

It is important that when roaming the house it switches to the strongest wifi signal automatically

I saw that it has 2 Network ports. Does one go in as the direct cable coming from the router and the other one can be used to feed a PC or PS4?

    Thanks for your help

Cable modem disconnects on occasion; lots of t3 and t4 errors

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:19 PM PST

We have Comcast/Xfinity service through an old Surfboard modem. Over the past several months an occasional problem has come up where it completely stops working anywhere from a couple minutes to 15+ minutes. The modem can't be accessed by IP address while it's down. This usually happens during late night hours, so we only notice it a couple times a month or less. However, it just happened again for a couple minutes in the middle of the day.

The logs are always full of T3 and T4 time out errors (like 4-5 a minute) while it's working normally. I've tried doing my research before on signal strengths and such, but never came up with a solution. Here is a screenshot of the signal levels after it came back online, in case I'm missing something:

    https://i.postimg.cc/fyXnSWz9/Modem-Signal.png

The three upstream channels with their status of "T4 TimeOut" always say that, but I don't know what to do about it, or if that's what is causing the problem. Is it possible this is a hardware issue since the modem is so old, or should I be looking elsewhere?

    Thank you for reading!
