    Simple Questions - January 27, 2021

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 04:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I don’t understand the hate for people who get 3090s. Why do people care about where you spend your money, if you are buying a 3090 you clearly aren’t doing a budget build and you are splurging.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:17 PM PST

Just tons of people saying they should have gotten the 3080 and complaining about the price to performance ratio. The 3080 is super hard to find and is already above the 1000$ market and i would imagine it goes up again before the super. I just don't get why under so many build posts people are crapping on the 3090. Mine works amazing and at this point i paid only a couple hundred more bucks then a 3080 is priced for so much less hassle

Newegg Shuffle: I actually won an AMD 5600x!!

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:08 PM PST

I submitted the parts I was wanting and got the email. Right at 5pm central, it showed up in my cart. Already signed in, so just checked out. Charged my card a min later and customer service confirms that the order is being processed.

Looks like I'll have a 3600 up for sale after this one comes in.

So basically, it does work, but you need to be quick about closing the deal.

How to not do your first build. (step by step tutorial)

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:41 AM PST

    1. Be a first time builder and don't know anything about budgeting and building within that budget.

    2. Buy a cpu about 60-70% of your budget.(in my case a ryzen 5 3600)

    3. Blow the rest of the budget on mobo and casing and everything else.

    4. Realise that the ryzen 5 3600 doesn't come with integrated graphics and you can't actually get any video output with the Frankensteinein monster you've created.

    5. Realise that GPU prices are so high rn that you cant even afford a lower end GPU.

    6. Stare at your case at night and dream about its glory when its complete.

Welcome to the life of a first time dumbass builder who thought he was smart af building his own new rig.

Why is my CPU always running at 95-100 degrees Celsius?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:07 PM PST

I have reapplied thermal paste, I have reseated my cooler, I have tried updating software and drivers, I don't know what left to try. I have a case with absurdly good airflow, and when I idle my Pc it runs closer to 70-80 degrees Celsius. I have taken the plastic piece of my AIO coolers copper head, the water is hot to the touch in my AIO cooler. The pipe going toward the CPU is cold to the touch.

I'm thinking maybe I have my fans on the AIO cooler wrong? My fans are both facing away the cooler with the backs on the cooler side blowing outward. Do these have to be flipped over?

    Specs: -Intel Core i7 10700k

-Cooler master Master Liquid ML240L RBG V2 AIO liquid Cooler

-MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Carbon WiFi Motherboard

    -Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650

    Is this normal performance?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:52 AM PST

I recently bought a 2080 ti off of craigslist and it seems to be performing really poorly (see screenshots). I contacted the guy on craigslist asking if he had issues with the card, and when I explained to him that I tried overclocking to fix performance he jumped on that saying that he would no longer accept a refund. He claims there was never an issue - is this true??? I'm kind of broke rn and needed this computer for college so I'm really bummed out about this, please any advice is helpful.

Are these aura sync fans compatible with this gigabyte motherboard?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 04:50 PM PST

Hi! I will build my first pc but I have a question about compatibility between the motherboard and the case's fans. The motherboard that I bought is the gigabyte b550 aorus elite and the case that I pretend to buy come with 3 fans that are compatible with aura sync and a fan controller. Because of this I dont know if I can use the app aura sync to control the fans (speed and rgb) because of the motherboard being from gigabyte since it uses rgb fusion.

PC parts running hotter after game boost

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 03:00 PM PST

Last night I tried an option in my BIOS called game boost. It worked but my parts ran hotter than they normally would and turned it off. Now that it's off my pc is still noticeably hotter than it used to be.

I'm not sure how this all works and I'm not sure if I disabled a fan or something. Wondering how to fix this?

How to paint a noctua fan black?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:02 PM PST

Need help, terrible benchmark scores after replacing mb & CPU

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 06:59 PM PST

I just replaced my old 4690K CPU and got a MSI MPG Z4940 Gaming Edge Wifi and 10600K. The installation seemed to go fine and the computer booted and I was able to get windows 10 working by entering my product key. But userbenchmark which I am using in reference to other systems using the same software shows that I am in 0th percentile by a huge margin. I ran TimeSpy as well and my results were much worse than when I had my 4690K. I checked that my bios is the latest revision, my thermals are fine, and I do not see any impact to low stress games like League, but I have not dared to run anything more intensive. I have not tried a clean install of windows or updating my bios since it shows that it is the latest version. If anyone has any idea of what could be going on it would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR: Replaced mb and CPU and comparative benchmark scores are terrible, BIOS is showing as latest version and thermals are fine

Am I weird for always tossing out the case fans that come with a case?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 02:44 PM PST

I've been building PCs since the early 2000s and have had a wonderful share of experiences in the past two decades doing all sorts of builds from simple HTPC style setups to custom watercooling.

Now, don't get me wrong, I understand there's a whole discussion about positive vs. negative air pressure and all that, but my goal is typically to achieve quietness while keeping temperatures reasonable.

I used to follow SilentPCReview quite religiously to even figure out the best ways to dampen HDD vibrations etc., but those days are over. An M.2 SSD now takes care of storage with zero regard for either noise or heat.

Over the years, this trend has been present ever so strongly: the far lower power draw and higher efficiency today makes the parts of yesterday look like a joke. PC cases are also no longer so stuffed with airflow obstructing structures on the inside (e.g. for 3.5" HDD and 5.25" drive bays). I haven't seen a case with those "watercooling outlets" anymore either.

Instead, cases are typically very clean on the inside with easy ways to conceal cables as well. It used to be its own artform to make neat setups, but now with all the junk and cables out of the way, air moves more easily with less resistance inside of the case.

PSUs also don't typically have those horrible 80mm fans on the side anymore, but rather either as a top or bottom exhaust with a 120mm fan they're able to pull reasonable amounts of air out of the case, pulling double duty while taking care of their own cooling.

"80 Plus" PSUs were practically unavailable at the time, but over the years, even midrange stuff now has at least an 80 Plus Gold or even Platinum rating. And with little reason to go for an overkill PSU, unless building on an HEDT platform, heat isn't my concern with a PSU either.

As a result, nowadays whenever I've bought a case for a build, I just simply toss out all fans out of the case as the first step. I've had cases from Lian Li, Phanteks, NZXT, and BitFenix with great results doing just that. Whether ITX or ATX, the only fans in any of my builds today are the CPU cooler, graphics card cooler, and PSU fan.

None of my builds (on either Coffee Lake or Ryzen) go above 40C in idle, reaching only a maximum of around 80C over prolonged stress testing (e.g. 24 hours of Prime95 with mixed load). No throttling is involved either, I make sure of that with BIOS settings and also typically use Noctua coolers, etc.

The most I do OC wise is just enabling the XMP profile. On just a few of the builds I've changed CPU voltage settings to have a slight undervolt. Nothing more. Now, someone might think 40C-80C isn't ideal, but it's perfectly reasonable and the builds are damn quiet.

Am I weird? I just have seemed to stop caring about airflow. All my builds are clean with cables out of the way using modular PSUs, etc. I zip tie anything that might be in the way. Typically the only "dangling" and visible cables are the GPU power cables.

I also feel it's fewer parts that could break or need maintenance and after a year or two of those machines running daily (as I build them for use in offices for 3D modeling and CAD work), dust seems to not be an issue either.

In the old days, this was never the case. I would even study airflow simulations and ask on forums with my own drawings what would be the best and I bought specific fans for specific purposes and all sorts of trickery and even fan speed controllers to make the setup bearable and not loud.

Posting this because I've seen so many threads asking about fans and case air pressure that I just feel weird about it. Thanks.

EDIT: Although I build PCs for customers using them in offices, they do push them, perhaps more so than gaming. Rendering a CAD scene can even take an entire day with CPU utilization at 100% and sometimes GPU acceleration thrown in. I personally test my builds by playing some games at the maximum settings the build can allow and still keep the temperatures witihin the same range and again without throttling.

    PC getting stuck on boot

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 05:23 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

    Parts list:

    Tomahawk B450 Max
    Ryzen 5 3600
    Sapphire Nitro+ RX 5700XT
    Seasonic Focus GX-650
    120gb SSD + 1TB SSD

    Problem:

I have been using this build since June 2020. It's been fine but the last couple of days I have noticed some stuttering. After putting it to sleep one night, the next morning I noticed it had a blank (but still backlit) screen, lights were on, keyboard and mouse lights were on, totally unresponsive. After holding the power button to shut it off, I turned it back on after a second and it then started getting stuck on the splash screen.

    Troubleshooting I've done:

-Checked cable connections / reconnected things
    -Cleared CMOS
    -Reseated GPU
-Tried booting with just one of each stick of RAM
-Tried to reinstall Windows via a USB stick, that also got stuck on the first loading screen and I had to shut it off and stop

    Photo:

Image of said splash screen that is getting stuck

    Additional info:
I am able to get into the BIOS, and I do not see anything out of the ordinary in there. Clearing CMOS reset my RAM that was running at 3200 back to 2133 but that's all I noticed.

As far as I can tell, the EZDEBUG LEDs on the Tomahawk are doing their normal thing (AFAIK). The CPU light turns on for a few seconds, goes to VGA, then boot, then turn off.

edit: WELP, the only thing I can assume is that my 120gb SSD boot drive kicked the bucket or something got royally screwed up in there. I just unplugged it and am reinstalling Windows on my 1TB SSD - which is good enough for me!

    Friends says PSU isn't compatible?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:38 AM PST

These are the main components of my setup:

    • RX 480 8GB
    • RYZEN 5 3600
    • B450M GAMING PLUS
    • XPG Z1 2x8GB DDR4
    • Antec 750w High Current Gamer Bronze

I want to replace my current PSU with the RM750W Gold and eventually my GPU with a 3060Ti. My friend however says that the PSU I want wont either support it, or come with the necessary cables to connect everything together. The Q&A however, on Amazon says everything you could need comes with the RM750W. Can I buy the PSU and be set? Or will I have to buy it, buy some cable splitters or look for a different PSU altogether?

    For who is the 3090?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 02:16 PM PST

Apologies if this is a dumb question, I don't know too much about PCs. I've been waiting for some time for my 3070, which, for my use will be plenty. But this got me wondering what people who need a 3090 would use it for. In other words, what kind of use (work? Games?) Would warrant getting a 3090?

    HD Audio Plug Wiring

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 04:52 PM PST

    Hello all,

A while ago I was swapping cases with a pc I had, which entailed switching the hd Audio port in the case with the proprietary one from the original. Since then, things have changed, and I was trying to put back the wiring as it was originally, and my dumbass didn't take photos of the original. So could someone double check my work and let me know if I got some wires wrong? I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks!

Any recommendations for gaming headsets for under $200 for (PC)?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:01 PM PST

I like to have an immersive experience when I game. So I went for the Astro A50s and A40s. Both very solid headsets although the A40s in my opinion, had a slightly better sound for being a wired connection headsets, while the A50s are wireless. Had both for 3 years now and they are all worn out. It's time for me to get new ones. Can anyone give me a list of good gaming headsets under $200 that are good quality? Astros did cost me around $300+ but gonna go for a cheaper buy this time around. I play a ton FPS games and story games.

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 8GB Vision OC Video Card

    PSU:Corsair RMx White (2018) 750 W 80 + Gold Certified fully Modular ATX PSU

    Hi all.

So I decided to buy and build a new gaming PC for my partner as a Christmas gift this year. I set a max budget and I was guided through the part picking / building process by some of my online gaming friends who have built PCs themselves before previously without issue.

It's worth noting that the PC ran fine without issue (aside from a slight intermittent buzzing noise) for just under a month. Also there is no one particular pattern to the issues or a specific activity/ usage that causes the issues described below… the PC can be sat idle, be mid game or my partner could just be browsing the net/ Spotify and it will happen… It can be fine for a whole day, 12 hours or last a few mins before it dies again.

The problems we're having in order of what occurred first to what is happening most recently are:

    • "Blue screen of death" referring to a "kernel security check failure".

(Then after windows reinstall the following….)

    • Random shut downs (just suddenly powering off) and then restarting in a loop or intermittently

    • "Blue screen of death" referring to a "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

Things we have done to try and fix the issues we've had so far:

    • Changed XMP settings in bios between Auto and 'XMP 2.0 Profile 1: DDR4-3600 16-18-28-38 1.35V'

    • Changed DRAM voltage in bios from default 1.200v to the highest it would allow 1.398

    • Checked that drivers were up to date (Hopefully we didn't miss any) including: o AMD Chipset driver ver 2.04.09.131 o Realtek Lan driver ver 10039_03232020 o ASRock MOBO Utility ver 3.0.360 o Geforce Experience graphics drivers o Checked windows device manager for any issues/ errors

    • Checked Event Viewer to gain further insight o Critical Events: "Kernel-Power" o Errors: Kernel-Boot, DistributedCOM, Service Control Manager

    • Ran CHKDSK check - This apparently fixed some kind of corruption.

    • Ran SFC check

    • Disabled Windows 10 fast startup

    • Reinstalled windows via cloud option (PC shut down part way through this a few times)

    • Ran a Power stress test on my PSU/GPU using OCCT. PC survived the 1 hour test and no errors found

    • Ran Memtest86 boot from USB. Test took 6.5 hours and all tests passed 100% no errors.

Things we're about to embark on trying on my next day off:

    • Considering taking build apart to rebuild again checking all cables, connections etc,

    • Reseat GPU and RAM sticks

    • Check all RAM sticks in all slots (best way to do this? My understanding is they can only work as duos)

    • Try PSU out of my own gaming PC in this new build PC to see if problem persists with different PSU

    • Bios update?

Does my ASRock B550 Steel Legend ATX AM4 MOBO need a Bios update for use withi the Ryzen 7 3700X CPU?

The Bios currently has base 1.00 but does my CPU may require 1.20?

The MOBO website states the latest bios update for my MOBO is "Update AMD AGESA Combo-AM4 V2 1.1.0.0 patch D *Caution!!! Please do NOT update this BIOS if 3300X CPU is being used on your system." My CPU is a 3700x so is this recommended or not?

    ....

Any advice is welcome as trying to figure this issue out seems to be above both mine and my partners understanding of computers. If anything obvious sticks out to you guys that we've done wrong / haven't checked please let us know.
