Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:29 PM PST I realise the absolute best option probably would be to replace the router with something with more GbE ports and connect each computer separately, but that's not on the cards right now - plus it's an advantage to *not* have two long network cables routed around the living room into the hub. separate IoT devices on home network? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:22 PM PST I recently upgraded my Apple Airport Extreme to a TP-Link AX50. I have quite a few IoT devices set up, as well as streaming devices, mobile devices, and computers. Even after upgrading, I'm still running into some occasional network interruptions and some of my Wemo smart plugs are still having issues. Here's my setup:
Would it make sense to put some of these on a separate WiFi network? If so, should I enable and use the Guest network or create a separate one? My main concern is still being able to use and control them with them on another network. And what about 2.5GHz vs. 5GHz? I currently have "Smart Connect" enabled, so both frequencies use the same SSID & password. Also, what about QoS? I just have it set to "Standard" at the moment, not prioritizing anything. Any other tips? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Setting up a vlan at home and exposing it [noob] Posted: 19 Jan 2021 03:14 AM PST Hi, I'm really new to networking and are trying to set up a vlan at home. The reason for this is that I want to separate my network so that I can have some of my computers on one vlan and the rest on another vlan. The reason for this is that I want to host websites and open up ports to the internet while still keeping my private computers safe. Is it possible and how does it work with having a public ip address to a network with vlans? I want to be able to access both vlans from the outside. Is a vlan the best option for me? I know I could set up something like a DMZ but that would mean buying another router (or am I wrong here?), which I would like to avoid if possible. Thnaks for any help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 04:07 PM PST So I'm looking into having United Fiber installed in my home, as it is the best option for me at the moment. The only problem that I've noticed is that the plan I've chosen has a limit of up to 3 devices on the network at any given moment. Is it possible for me to replace the router provided by my ISP with my own router in order to potentially bypass the device limit? Thanks! Edit: Changed up the wording. [link] [comments] |
Switch after router, drops internet randomly (and seemingly permanently now) Posted: 19 Jan 2021 02:31 PM PST Hey guys, I have an Asus AC86U router (with merlin software), running one cable out to a TPLink T1500G-8 switch, this then has my PC and NAS connected, which has been working without any further setup of the router. This has been running for a few days, however today, the port on the switch, connected to the router shows no activity. The router is showing no connected devices, however if i plug this cable directly into a device, it works perfectly. I previously had a smaller switch in the same setup, and this was causing similar dropouts etc, which leads me to think there is something wrong with my router setup (but I haven't configured it in any "exotic" ways, except for installing Diversion, not sure if this could be contributing...) Any ideas guys? I'm pulling my hair out... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 05:23 PM PST Ok, I've read through this sub for hours and have learned terms and forms of home networking I never even knew existed and now I have a headache and just more questions. Based on what I read, I THINK what I need is to hook up a couple MoCA adapters then use a mesh network through the rest of the house where a fast connection is unnecessary. Hopefully someone will take the time to help a lost man out. I have a 2500sq ft 2 story home. My shitty modem/router combo provided by my internet provider is in the corner of the house in my office on the second floor. Up until recently this set up was fine, we had shitty wifi signal throughout the house and I had my PC for gaming purposes in the room with the router hard wire connected and everyone was happy. Now my kids are older and play games as well and my wife has been doing zoom meetings on her PC. The internet signal sucks for everyone (except me) and my wifes meetings keep getting interrupted so it's time for a change. Only places I really need a fast connection is the downstairs living room (which is just below the router room) and my bedroom where my wife keeps her PC. Rest of the house can have wifi. My PC will remain hard wired to the router in the office. This is my potential fix and where the advice is needed if anyone is still reading this. Get a whole new modem and separate router, im thinking the motorola MB7420 modem and a tp link deco M9 (please advise on how I can save money or alternate products). Space out the mesh network to cover the whole house, maybe 1 upstairs and 1 or 2 downstairs. Run a MoCA to wire my wife's PC where one of my kids game as well. Do the same downstairs to the family TV where the PS console is located for the kiddos to play. Am I thinking this through right or is this a completely unrealistic scenario? My original thought was to just get a better modem and router and just wifi everything in a more powerful manner but after reading this sub, this is what my plan has evolved to. Any advice on equipment needed and brands to purchase to accomplish this would be fantastic. Thanks all! [link] [comments] |
Settimg up new router with existing att fiber Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:19 PM PST So im not tech savvy at all but the att modem/router they provide isn't that great its the arris nvg599 so i bought a netgear nighthawk r7000. I thought it would be a simple plug and play with a bit of setup but when i turn my xbox on and check the network settings it says there is a double nat and it basically prevents me from playing with my friends so if anyone has a step by step that is easy to read and understand that would be appreciated or some advice at least thank you. What is the minimum bend radius for fiber optic cable? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 07:49 PM PST Fiber bend radius is a real issue. Who knows the minimum bend radius? Is there any industry standards for this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:17 PM PST I plan on using the crawl space in my house to add some ethernet plugs to a few rooms. I was wondering what sort of connections I need to do this. Currently only installing 2 plugs. At the two rooms (bedroom and living) I also was wondering if I can have routers for better wifi at these two locations. The current router is between these rooms, and the wifi is very spotty especially in the living room. [link] [comments] |
ASUS AX3000 R-AX58U - PS4 Wifi Connection Dropping Posted: 19 Jan 2021 07:24 PM PST Hello all, Installed an ASUS AX3000 R-AX58U in my apartment. Everything seems to working fine except my wifi internet connection to my PS4 keeps dropping every 15 minutes or so which was never an issue with the ISP provided router. I am using exclusively the 5ghz as 2ghz either fails during setup or has download speed of no higher than 10mbs. Any insights into router or ps4 settings that need to be changed would be appreciated. Thanks, [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 07:12 PM PST Hello, I have Cox, and am currently renting a modem from them. My plan is for 150 mbps, but I only get about 100 hard lined and 5-10 on wifi. I've had this surfboard and a netgear nighthawk router sitting around I could use, but when I got on with tech support they told me the surfboard would not be an improvement to my speed. Kinda feel like this is just so they keep me on the line for renting their gear, but I don't want to go thru trying to install everything if that's not the case and indeed I can and should be getting better speeds than that. Thanks for any input! [link] [comments] |
Simple setup - 2 floors, old building. Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:28 AM PST Would like some recommendations for what to buy. I've done some comparisons of the popular consumer products - Netgear's Orbi/Nighthawk lines, Google WiFi, eero, and now I've stumbled across amplifi and other unifi offerings (Edge router + unifi APs). It's all a bit much, and I'd like to ask this sub for thoughts for my specific situation. Current situation:
Ideally, would like
If possible:
Budget:
My default would be something like Netgear CM1100 + Orbi or Google WiFi. If there is a better setup for me, would love to learn about the options. Let me know what other info I can provide, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Just upgraded network to a netgear rax50. Performing worse than Spectrum default router. Posted: 19 Jan 2021 07:07 PM PST Hello, I just upgraded my home network to a Netgear Nighthawk RAX50. My intent was to go from using the default Spectrum router, to something that could give me better speeds for gaming consoles, and can handle multiple devices at my home. With just about everything at default, at first it was great. My Xbox was able to download at 100+ mbps over wi-fi, up from 40 mbps, and no issues had popped up. After the next couple days, the connection started getting very spotty in one area of our Condo where the bedrooms are. The connection just drops for seemingly no reason at all. I have tweaks the channels to steer away from other networks in our complex, I have turned off the security scan, I have tried a lot of tweaks, and nothing has changed. I'm at a stuck spot here. As my SO is getting tired of it, and is wanting me to go back to the old Spectrum router, since it was more consistent. I just dropped a couple hundred on this router, and don't want to go back to slow gaming connections. Plus it makes no sense that this router would perform WORSE than the default Spectrum router. I'm looking for advice on what could be the cause of the spotty connection in the bedrooms of my house. I can provide any more info if need be (I know I am short here of a lot of details). Buying our first home- how does setup work, and router recommendations Posted: 19 Jan 2021 06:43 PM PST First off, this is all new to me, so I apologize if this sounds uninformed. I couldn't find answers to these questions in other posts, but I might have missed something. My wife and I are moving into our first "real" home, and will be paying for our own internet service for the first time (we've previously just split the cost to piggy-back off of close neighbors). Xfinity is the only decent provider in our area, and we will be going with the 'up to 100 mbps' plan. I am planning on buying our own modem and router. I play a moderate amount of online games, and we stream movies and TV shows together (I would wire ethernet into my PC for gaming, while all else would be over WiFi). Here are my questions: 1) How does initial setup work with Xfinity? Do they come and set up the 'outside' stuff, and then I can just plug my modem/router into the coax/cable plug in the wall? How do they 'turn on' the service in my house, so to speak? What is free vs what do they charge for? And how difficult is it to set up the modem/router myself after that? I am fairly tech-savvy, but home networking is almost entirely new to me 2) What router and modem would you recommend for our use case? I've found a lot of threads from around 2 years ago saying that DOCSIS 3.1 was the way of the future, and others saying that its overkill for 100 mbps speeds, and others yet saying that it reduces latency and improves performance for online games, which is important to me. I haven't been able to find much recent info, so I don't know how things stand now. Is DOCSIS 3.0 sufficient, or do I need to invest in 3.1? These are the router and modem I am considering, as they were recommended in another thread, but I am open to other options up to $200 total if it is worth the upgrade. As a complete noob in this department, I appreciate all your help and input! [link] [comments] |
Will adding an unmanaged gigabit ethernet switch cause a double-NAT? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 02:47 PM PST I did some research on here and on google and I think I'll be ok, but I wanted to check with you all first before I made a purchase because I'm a newb to networking stuff. I have google fiber and I'm supposed to be able to get up to 1 gigabit up/down speed. I recently noticed my speeds were significantly lower than that, and I think the problem is likely my setup. Most devices are connecting wirelessly, which means they won't be able to hit that full speed (my laptop for instance says it's got a limit of 585 Mbps wireless). The devices that aren't wireless, I ran an ethernet cable to my basement into an old Netgear router and wired connections from that to various other devices, but I looked it up and that router is only good for speeds up to 100Mbps. My plan is to get a new unmanaged ethernet switch to replace that router (and ensure all cables are at least CAT5e, preferably CAT6). Now I remember when I set up that router initially a few things gave me trouble because of a "double-NAT" error and I had to go in and set that router up in bridge mode to get around that. My questions is, with an unmanaged ethernet switch will I have to potential to get a double-NAT error? My understanding is that the switch being unmanaged means it doesn't have the fancy firmware that might cause a double-NAT, but I'm worried that if it does being unmanaged will mean that I won't have any way to fix the problem. Also, I just thought of a second part to the question, will I still be able to assign static IPs on my router to the multiple devices wired into the switch, or will the switch obscure them? Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |
Is my modem malfunctioning or is it ISP or..? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 06:27 PM PST Hello all. Until a few months ago, I was using a Modem Router , the Netgear C3000-100NAS. It was fine but my connection speed was noticeably getting slow or not up to actual speeds specially after my ISP upgraded my speed. I decided to buy a Netgear AC1750 router and set up my modem to only work as a modem (disabled the router features). This worked fine and I even noticed that I reached my max speeds more often. The added 5Ghz from the new router was also really nice since the modem doesn't have it. However recently, my internet has been randomly shutting down and refusing to work at all and I'm noticing a lot more lag occurring while playing games, mainly ping issues, etc. I look at my modem and router when it happens but all the lights are on. My PS5 which is directly connected to the router refuses to connect to the internet as well. Restarting both modem and routers seems to solve this issue temporarily but for the last two weeks or so, it's been a daily occurrence, so my question is, is my modem finally getting too old or might this be an ISP issue, etc? How could I diagnose this issue better, etc? Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Wifi issues - stumped a senior network admin Posted: 19 Jan 2021 06:21 PM PST Ok, so I have a problem that I ran past a friend who is a Sr. Network admin for an outsourced IT company (hes internal IT support for the guys who help the rest of us, so he knows his stuff). He is completely stumped and out of ideas, so I thought I would run it past the experts of Reddit. Just moved into a house in March and have been having wireless issues pretty much since day one. When we moved, I had my old ISP come to the new house and hook us up. I kept having dropped connection problems. I thought maybe it was the crappy ISP router, so I dug out my old router that worked at the last house (Linksys but don't know the model). Hooked it up and continued to have the issues. Specifically, all my wireless devices would lose connection - Nest doorbell, Nest doorlock, baby monitor, Kasa smart lights and indoor camera, TV for streaming, and our Samsung Galaxy Note phones. On my phone, it would say connected with no internet. After talking with my friend, we decided that I may not be getting a strong signal in my new larger house or the old Linksys had reach its end of usefulness, so I decided to purchase a Google Nest Mesh system, thinking new hardware and expanded coverage would resolve the problem. Installed the Nest, things were OK for about a week and began having the same problem again. So ok, now the problem has to be the ISP. Fios was available, so I figured why not give them a shot. Fios now installed, continued to have the problem, so we assumed it was now an issue with the Nest. I unhooked that and am now using the Verizon Fios router, buy still having the problems. TL,DR: wireless signal "connected without internet" at random times on phone, other devices like nest doorbell become unavailable. Tried 4 different wireless routers, 2 different ISP. Some additional information: the Fios router self analyzes available signal channels and is showing no conflicts on the chosen channel from neighbors or other devices. The drop of connection happens at random, but usually multiple times a day. Disconnecting and reconnecting right away usually resolves the issue on my phone other devices, like the doorbell usually take 10-15 mins to come back. I do not have any other signal producing devices in my home, like wireless landline telephones. Sorry this is so long. But a lot of troubleshooting has been going on. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Looking for a solid gaming friendly router under 300. I've had it with the Netgear r7000p. Posted: 19 Jan 2021 06:05 PM PST So other gamers playing Destiny 2 with this router are having the same issues of disconnecting every 2 hours. Sending this one back. Would love to get some input on a solid gaming router. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 05:58 PM PST I've been doing some research into building my own /r/homelab so I can learn more as well as not be so reliant on cloud services. One of my projects is to replace my Nest outdoor cameras with some nicer security cameras that can record locally. After doing some research, I think I've found a camera I like. However, I am a renter and don't own my own place, so unfortunately I can't drill holes in the walls and install Ethernet cable. This has led me to believe my only option is using a wireless camera. I could use some expertise to double check my plan and let me know if there will be any major issues or if there is a better alternative. Here is what I've got:
Does this sound feasible or is this insane? I've attempted to attach an MSPAINT network diagram in case my written description wasn't clear. Any feedback or alternative ideas are greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Need new router for whole house Posted: 19 Jan 2021 05:52 PM PST I'm looking at TP Link AX3000 mesh WiFi 6 with 3 units. Right now I'm using a 3 to 4-year-old Linksys router and it does pretty good the drops out on us. [link] [comments] |
Upgraded Network to Ubiquiti AP's. Now What, If Anything? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 11:45 AM PST Thanks to help on this sub my network has been upgraded. I was using a Nighthawk R7000 as my main router/Wifi device, with an Apple Airport extreme hardwired upstairs in bridge mode as another AP. It worked okay, but I wanted to "Unify" things. I ended up order two AC-LR access points, simply because the AC Lites weren't in stock on the Ubiquiti site and the LR's weren't a huge outlay more. I ended up bumping my Airport to the curb, and turned wireless off on my R7000. I now have an AP beside the R7000 and another upstairs -- same setup as before but now both AP's are made by the same company. I'm very close to needing another port on the R7000, so I think a switch is in order, and I set the Ubituiti stuff up with the mobile app so I don't have a cloud controller. In terms of adding performance and or stability to this setup, should I: 1) Get a cloud key (This helps me administer network/view stats, that's about it from what I gather) 2) Replace the R7000 for a USG 3) Buy a switch for future expandibility (I have a couple cheap TPLINK switches in rooms upstairs, allowing me to plug multiple things in with a room that has only one jack). 4) Nothing -- if it's working it's working. Ride it out. [link] [comments] |
Alternative to pfSense ... with an API? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 05:24 PM PST I run a couple of pfSense boxes at home (master and backup) and they're .... fine. I mean, I like them for what they do, but whenever I want to do something a little different, they make it next to impossible. So I wondered if anyone could recommend an open, alternate firewall (something I could stick on an x86 box) which comes with some sort of automation system or api. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:55 PM PST Current setup:
Node is placed in second bedroom and signal in master bed (on the other end of floor) is very weak. No eth port in the middle so moving the node is not an option. If I want to improve the coverage on second floor by placing an additional aimesh node in master bed (eth port exists). Which option is better? I don't care about wifi6.

Asus GT-AX11000 Port Forwarding Frustration Posted: 19 Jan 2021 04:24 PM PST I just purchased a new home. Couldn't run a cable drop to my office based on the home layout. So I decided to go a different route. Wifi 6. Based on reviews, the AX11000 was the way to go. It's as advertised, blazing fast. I get 600+mbps over wifi. I am a avid gamer. I play online shooters mostly. This router was build for gamers. It's all over the box. Yet, I am having the absolute wort time opening ports for anything... Gaming or even my Plex server. I will list out the things I have done and what I have on the network, maybe someone who has had this issue and or is smarter than I am, can help me out. Modem/Router: ATT BGW210 Set to Bridge mode GT-AX11000 set to handle all traffic and ip distro. The gaming PC is on its own wifi channel that is built for one device. The two examples I will use are COD Black ops and Overwatch. Both games show that I have a NAT set to moderate. As for Plex, it can't be reached from outside the network. The Asus router has the WAN IP from the ISP. So there isn't any double DHCP server issues. I have used the automated Open NAT option in the ASUS router for both COD and OW. Both still show moderate NAT. I used check my port online tool to see if they are open and they report back as closed. I also went in to advanced WAN options to manually put in the port forwarding rules. Both still show moderate NAT. I have rebooted the router, I have rebooted the modem. I have shut down both PC and server and all networking equipment. Rebooted it all and still nothing. Firewall on windows 10 has exceptions for all the games. It is driving me up a wall... This is the most simplistic thing to do on a router and I have never had any issues on any router in my life. I do not understand what is going on. If anyone can help, I would sure appreciate it!
