My PC build experience in 2021 Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:07 AM PST Me: "I just need a GPU and my build is complete" Me: "Why would I pay (insert price) for a 10/20 series GPU when I can get a 30 series which is better for cheaper" Me: *cant find a 30 series* Me: "Fine, I guess I'll pay for a 20 series and suck it up" Me: *can't find a 20 series either* Me: FUCK [link] [comments] |
You don’t actually always need the latest and greatest thing. Posted: 19 Jan 2021 08:40 AM PST 4-5 months ago I was in the planning and part picking stage, and being in the $700-$800 USD price range I was finding it hard to fit everything I wanted into my build. Long story short I ended up buying a used GTX 1060 paired with a R3 3100, and a 75hz monitor (idc too much about high refresh rates). Then a couple months later all the new CPUs and GPUs came out, and I found myself caught up in buyers remorse, thinking I should have waited and gotten something better. I then came to a realization that my 1060 has met the recommended requirements for every game I had tried so far, and at 75hz I don't need anything more. This is just a friendly reminder that with all the buzz of new hardware and all the fancy things it can do, sometimes you don't need the latest and greatest components for your use case. ETA: I'm not saying you shouldn't buy new graphics cards, because if you can afford it and it works for you that's probably better! All I'm saying is I see a lot of people on this sub posting their builds that they are proud of with older generation hardware, and there are always people in the comments saying "why wouldn't you get a 3070" or "new ryzen processors just came out why would you get a 2600" when maybe they couldn't afford the newest thing, or they just plain don't need the newest thing. Just a frustration post about RGB Posted: 19 Jan 2021 02:32 PM PST Why the heck are there 2 different types of RGB pins instead of just one universal. You have your 5v argb and 12v rgb. Then on top of that you have companies who sell rgb products only as a 5v argb or a 12v rgb (not both). So basically if i own a 12v 4 pin rgb motherboard, but I find a fan set, LED strip, or PSU combs, etc that I like abs come to realize they only work with 5v argb I'm basically shit out of luck. "OH, BUT OP THERES A SOLUTION" Yeah I know I can buy a 5v to 12v converter, but based on reviews these things are hit or miss. Maybe you'll get it to work, maybe you won't, maybe go fuck yourself. Then let's say you're lucky enough to finally find the RGB components you like, and they're all compatible with your motherboard and you're all happy that your pc is going to spit out the unicorn puke of your choosing. WRONG! now you have to battle with the cluster fuck of terrible RGB software. TLDR: current RGB manufacturing needs a universal platform both for hardware and software [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 02:16 PM PST I was raised on PC, but I was too young to really know anything about them. As soon as I became an adult I switched to Mac for work. I'm finally about to make the switch back to PC for personal work. PC just makes sense for me now. Anyway, I told a PC buddy of mine to "make a list of your ideal parts and I'll just buy it." I'm waiting (impatiently) to have all of the parts before I start. It'll be my first ever PC build from the ground up. Nervous. Excited. Etc. I know nothing but I've been sponging a surplus of YouTube videos, so I'm gettin' there. Anyway, here are the parts. Let me know what you guys think about this build! I will definitely follow up once it's up and running, with pics/video and the like. Thanks! - Phanteks Eclipse P400A Digital ATX Mid Tower Case (~$90) - Nvidia GeForce Founders Edition RTX 3090 Video Card (I checked Best Buy's website every morning for 3 months and finally got lucky with a surprise limited batch.) (~$1600) - Ryzen 9 3950x 3.5ghz 16 core (~$725) - Corsair H115i RGB Platinum 97 CFM Liquid Cooler (~$135) - Asus TUF Gaming X570 Plus ATX AM4 Motherboard (~$190) - G Skill Trident Z RGB 32 gb DDR4 3600 CL18 Memory (2 of these, so 64gb total) (~$300) - Crucial P1 1TB M.2 2280 NVME SSD (2 of these as well, so 2 TB) (~$200) - Corsair LL120 63 CFM 120mm Fan 3-Pack (~$130) - EVGA SuperNOVA 1200W P2 Power Supply Platinum Efficiency (~$300) - Samsung Business CH890 Series 34 in Ultrawide Curved Monitor (~$600) - Razer BlackWidow Elite Mechanical RGB Black Keyboard (~$100) - Logitech G502 Hero Gaming Mouse (~$50) I got a chair too but I won't include that. Total: ~$4,420 Hurt the wallet but worth every penny. Absolutely can't wait to set her up. Thanks for indulging me! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 19 Jan 2021 03:18 PM PST Hi guys, I'm 6'7, around 200 pounds/90 kg really looking to invest in a nice ergonomic office chair since I spend most of my day working from home/gaming etc. Really looking into the Herman Miller but there's so many options, got any idea which is the best for the extra height? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:57 AM PST Heard rumors Best Buy restocks every other Tuesday around noon for the RTX 3000 series. Doesn't look like anything popped up on my octoshop. Anyone else have any luck? [link] [comments] |
Best monitor 144Hz 1440p G-Sync for gaming? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 03:58 PM PST I'm buying a new pc and I wanna know what the best monitors are for at least 144fps and 1440p gaming. Going RTX 3070 so I'd like gsync.. looking for 27 inch ideally and I'm tempted to get curved ones but I'm not convinced they're totally worth it so open to flat options too If links then UK links please, price not really a problem.. Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:04 PM PST Should I upgrade my SSD or upgrade to a hard drive? I have a WD Blue 500GB NVME SSD. Me personally I'm all about speed so to answer my own question I don't think a hard drive will do me any favors^ , does anyone know any SSD's with 2TB that is reliable, fast, and somewhat not insane in price? Thanks for any help I appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
PC For Someone Confined to a Couch/Bed Posted: 18 Jan 2021 07:22 PM PST Hi everyone, I am in the process of building a pretty powerful rig so I can video edit and game on. Long story short, I have a medical issue that requires me to be confined to a couch/bed for most of the day. Sitting straight up in a chair causes me intense pain after about 45 minutes. I am currently building a PC and trying to find an inexpensive way to be able to use my PC on my couch but also have it relatively easy to move if I want to put it back on my desk or move it to my bed. Is there any sort of stand or desk around $300 max that would be able to accommodate me? I've tried to Google it but can find absolutely nothing but laptop stands. I was thinking maybe someone else has run into this problem or knows of a product that can accommodate me. Thanks! EDIT: Has anyone ever tried using their TV as a monitor? I mean, I do video editing and gaming and sit about 12 feet from the TV so not sure how well that would work. [link] [comments] |
Should I buy my parts all at once or once they're available? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:33 PM PST I already have a good idea of what I want my first build to be, but unfortunately that means I'm on the "waiting for a scrap of 3060 Ti to come by my way" team. Is it better to get everything now or to wait for the GPU? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 04:18 PM PST Hello r/buildapc!! Recently I upgraded my old rig and am having some issues with my current setup. Specs: Ryzen 5 5600x G.Skill Trident Z 3600 MHz (4x8gb) - this is my second set of RAM, which I purchased specifically because it is listed on the MSI website as compatible with the MOBO. MSI Tomahawk B550 Corsair RM850x PSU Asus dual 3070 (forget the exact name but not hugely relevant I don't think). So when I finished building this, I originally was using Crucial Ballistix 2x8gb 3600 RAM. The first time I turned my rig on, it posted, and I made it into the bios since I wanted to check out the clock speed of the ram and the timings. Oddly enough, I had messed up putting in one of the sticks, only 8gb was listed. No problem. I turned it off, re-slotted the second stick, booted up, and there it was. However I noticed I wasn't getting the advertised speed of 3600 MHz. It was 2666 or 2933, I can't remember. I figured I would worry about that later, let's make sure everything else is in order. I exited the bios and booted onto the desktop, everything was working normally. I dove back into the bios and enabled the XMP profile to get my 3600 MHz, and that is when my issues started. I exited the bios and the computer wouldn't post. Since I enabled the XMP profile, I haven't been able to get my PC to post. I researched on the MSI website and found out my RAM wasn't in the compatibility list, so I returned it and got the RAM in the list above. I received that today, only to find my PC still won't post. I have tried pushing the BIOS reset button on the back I/O of the motherboard, to no avail. All that happens when I turn it on is the red LED for "DRAM" lights up. No posting or anything. Fans spin, lights come on, everything else at least appears to be fine. Any help resolving this issue would be much appreciated. At this point I'm worried the motherboard is bricked, but I can't be sure. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jan 2021 10:05 AM PST Hi, I've been wanting to build a pc for some time and I will finally build one in February. This is my list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/aggyg/saved/CYRPXLI put a 3060 Ti in it, but I don't know if its stock will get better by February. Why does ram speed matter more for amd? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 07:22 AM PST I've heard that ram speed matters more for amd than intel because of a thing called the Infinity Fabric. I was wondering if that's true for all their cpus? If so, what speed should I go for? [link] [comments] |

Looking for advice on this Gaming PC Build (First build) Posted: 19 Jan 2021 03:32 PM PST Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) yes What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Gaming, website creation (anything needed for this really? it will be for an online business) If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) the ryzen 7 2700x and asus gefore gtx 1660 super benchmarks are what im looking for What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? 650-750 euros (800-900 us dollars) In what country are you purchasing your parts? Ireland Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!). https://pcpartpicker.com/list/b6xrPV Provide any additional details you wish below. I am aware of the ridiculous overpricing of cpu and gpus at the moment and for the near future, is buying second hand worth it? Im looking at lower spec pieces for these just to have until i can get my hands on the ones i actually want, but I want advice before purchasing. NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section [link] [comments] |

Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:32 PM PST So this is my build I've built today: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/sWcVCz I'm getting a light on my motherboards troubleshoot system saying my cpu has problems. I realised there was a problem since I can't boot my pc. All the pins looks fine to me on the mobo. Any ideas? Someone suggested that I hadn't powered the cpu, and to be frank I don't think I have done that, I thought it was powered by the motherboard through the pins [link] [comments] |
How to know if you need to flash BIOS for Ryzen 5000 series? When to do it? Posted: 19 Jan 2021 01:43 PM PST My new build will consist of a Ryzen 5600x and a MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk motherboard. This might sound like a dumb question (its my first build) but how do I know if I have to flash the BIOS? Also, do I do this after putting together the PC or before as I've seen videos and the CPU isn't attached to the motherboard when flashing. [link] [comments] |
