    Gaming on a budget

    Gaming on a budget

    Gaming on a budget

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:21 PM PST

    Hey guys,

I have C-PTSD and I have been using gaming to cope for years.

My computer was stolen about 8 months ago and I don't have much of an income.

I'm looking for a laptop that can run league of legends smoothly. I'd like to possibly find something with a SSD and avoid emmc.

My budget is between 300-375$ range.

I won't be using this for much other than gaming.

Thank you for your time and efforts.

What laptop should I get for school and watching movies, surfing, netflix, reading and writing

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:15 AM PST

    Hi,

I was thinking of getting an Asus Vivobook S15 S533 but there are many other models and I am so lost. So here I am asking for help, thanks!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Under 900 euros I am in France
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
The battery life is really important.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
The laptop shouldn't be heavy as I have to carry it.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
It should at least be a 14inch laptop.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Paint Tool Sai, Among Us
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Only light gaming (among us)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I want a laptop mainly used for watching movies, shows, animes so it should have a full hd screen. It must handle multiple tabs opened. And I hope that it can last me much longer than 2 years ( my previous laptop was so slow after only one year).

    Which laptop is better?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:40 PM PST

I'm wondering about which laptop is better for gaming and editing. An Asus laptop with an i3-4030U and a Geforce 840M and 1TB HDD with 6GBs DDR3L 1600Mhz RAM or,

an HP laptop with a Ryzen 5 3450U and Radeon Vega 8 Graphics and a 256 GB SSD with 8GBs DDR4 2400Mhz RAM.

Note: I can upgrade the Asus laptop with an 256 GB SSD and I can upgrade the 6GBs RAM to 8GBs RAM.

Should I buy a MacBook Air sometime in 2021/2022?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 11:34 PM PST

I have no need of a new laptop as of now. I own a Lenovo Legion Y540 (bought in Feb 2019) and I'm quite happy with it. All of my personal, work and gaming needs are fulfilled and see no issue with at the moment.

Sometime in late 2021/early 2022, I may buy a new laptop.

I recently bought an iPhone 12 Pro (after being an android user for 8-9 years) and am loving it to bits. I love the UI and integration and can't get enough of the build quality.

I plan on getting a proper gaming PC sometime this summer (gathering funds for the same now) and also own a PS4 pro. So, any laptop I buy in the future will probably be an ultrabook of sorts.

I want to get more into the apple ecosystem. The problem is, I have never used any laptop without Windows (barring a bit of Linux based systems in college). My work involves a lot of work on MS Word, quite a bit of designing on Draftsight and a few other softwares like Penspen PlusOne.

Is shifting to MacBook Air for work and watching movies on-the-go worth it? I was never a fan of tablets and do not plan on getting an iPad anytime soon.

Should I get a MacBook Air?

[Canada] [940 CAD] Looking for a Moderate Gaming laptop with decent battery life.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 02:50 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
950 Canadian Dollars, purchasing in Canada/North America.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Prefer not to, as I'd be extensively using this laptop and probably won't be replacing it anytime soon.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I would prioritize performance, I'm happy with any variant long as it hits my budget and performs decently well.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not that much, I'll probably get a laptop bag.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
1440P if possible, otherwise 1080P is great at around 15'5 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
CAD and Gaming, my game list includes:
    • - Battlefield 1
    • - CSGO
    • - Overwatch
    • - Rocket league
    • - Grand Theft Auto V
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'm looking to target around 60fps at 1080P on these games if possible, I can scale back the resolution for more performance but would prefer to have it on high settings. I'm open to upgrades later in the future if need be so.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
If possible, a lite RGB on the keyboard wouldn't hurt but otherwise I'm okay with anything really.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would really be spending about 3-4 hours daily on this laptop so I want it to last, that's all. I know performance laptops aren't known to have long lifespans but I would prefer a compromise,

I have a preferance for Ryzen laptops, but if it's not in my price range that's okay too.

A reliable laptop for 3D modelling

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 02:26 AM PST

I want to find a good laptop for work for my wife. She is a 3d modeller. We travel often so it should be a laptop but it might be heavy (2.3-2.7 kg).

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Around 800-1000 EUR, Germany

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

It should be of a high build quality with a good display. It might be thick for the sake of efficient cooling

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that important but it'd better be under 2.7 kg

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

A lot of 3D modelling in Blender, so CUDA support I think is important. Also, photoshop and illustrator.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    SIMS 2/SIMS 4.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality, good display quality. Finger-print, keyboard backlight, fingerprint sensing, etc are not important at all.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So, my budget is around 1k EUR, it might be expanded to 1.2k for a really good laptop. I am going to use it for the next 5 years, so I want it to be of a good build quality with some good cpu/gpu specs. And no Macs.

    Alternatives to XMG Core 17?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 02:05 AM PST

I've been saving up for a while to get the XMG Core 17 (I think it's the Eluktronics RP-17 in the US?) and I've finally been able to set enough money aside, but I realised it's been a while since it came out and there might be better alternatives for the same price by now, or cheaper computers with similar specs. It's hard to put this into the typical questionnaire format, seeing how I'm just looking for alternatives to known specs.

I was planning on getting the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 for graphics, 32GB RAM (Samsung should be okay) and a 500GB Samsung 970 EVO for storage. Combined with the full Windows 10 license that ends up being about 1700 euros (I don't think extra warranty is worth the money?)

I'm mostly planning on using this laptop for gaming, school and eventual work down the line, so I don't need heavy CAD software for example. I'd love to be able to play games like the Dark Souls series, Sekirou, DOOM 2016 (maybe DOOM Eternal after), Code Vein, Space Engineers, The Witcher series, Subnautica: Below Zero,... Well, the works. Medium to heavy-ish games, but nothing too fancy.

Any advice or suggestions are more than welcome, because I'm wondering if I'm not overdoing it. It's entirely possible I don't need a machine this heavy for this stuff, I just want to be able to use this laptop for quite a while before I need a new one. Again, apologies for the lack of formatting, and thanks in advance.

Suggest a laptop for occasional casual gaming

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:11 PM PST

My wife needs a new laptop for working at home (emails, Microsoft Office, hundred page+ word documents. She had a Microsoft surface years ago when they first came out and loved how "pretty" it was, but didn't love some of the functional limitations compared to a traditional laptop. We're also looking for something that she can use to do occasional casual gaming with me, (for reference, Tabletop Simulator, DoTA, Rocket League etc). She doesn't want a big heavy laptop so I was looking at the Dell G3 15 and it seemed to strike a good balance between cost, capability, and size. Any suggestions?

Is this a good choice for light gaming?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:53 PM PST

I don't have a huge budget and this laptop seems okay. The stuff i want to do with it is run minecraft well, and just in general be a good and fast laptop.

The thing im worried about is that it says it's Windows 10 S, and according to google you can only use things downloaded from the store, which isn't what i want. Is it possible to change this laptop to normal windows 10 and for it to run well on windows 10?

    Looking for a gaming laptop

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:19 PM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**

    $ 1400 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      I would prefer new

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Good build quality, very durable, battery life should be exceptional it's a big part of why I'm asking, and performance should be best you can go with my budget, perferably 1660ti or 2060 with a good mobile proccesor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important as long as it's mobile it doesn't need to be thin or light, again I need good battery life if possible.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Doesn't matter, just not extremely small or large.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly gaming, maybe some light photo editing in the future. I want to run 60 or 100 fps at 1080p average for most gaming titles.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I want to be able to run everything smoothly 60+ fps or perferably 100 on high or ultra settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A high speed keyboard is preferable though it doesn't matter to much, build quality should be great specifically durability.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Need help deciding between laptops for work.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:53 PM PST

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Hi I'm looking to buy a laptop for work in Perú

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    2000-2400 Soles (peruvian)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, but I would prefer to be new. Unless it's a really good option.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality and Performance are the most important qualities. I don't really care about form or battery.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll run power point, chrome, adobe reader, word, Visio. Also I'll start building web pages with wordpress. And some photo editing with illustrator and photoshop, but I can use the portable versions.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Want: Reliable build quality, SSD, USB type C. Don't care about: optical drive, finger print r, touchpad. Would be nice: Touch screen (But I don't think it's possible with my budget.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So, I have some options, I'm in sorta of a bad place right now, and risking buying a laptop so I can work. I was affected a lot for the virus, so I'm slowly recovering, and buying this is a risk, but I know I can do work and improve my situation right now. I'm thinking if I should buy an i3 or make and effort and go for the i5 or R5.

These are my options so far. Aspire 5 A515-55-37JD-8GB-256GB/881978348)

    Aspire 5 A515-44-R0NS

    Aspire 5 A515-55-51GK

I'm just wondering, should I save some money for now, or the difference between those are worth the money.

Thanks in advance for the time. Right now I'm taking a risk, and I don't know how much better are the i5 and R5 processors compared to the i3, that's why I'm asking. I'll spend almost all my money, but I know I can recover that money and have an income just in case we go to lock down again.

Laptop suggestion for light gaming and school

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 12:05 AM PST

I'm currently using a Dell XPS 13 9343 with 4GB RAM and Intel Core i5-5200. There's a lot of lagging whenever I have to run programs like ArcGIS Pro and Timelapse for school. I also like to do some casual gaming with The Sims and it lags a ton on there even without any mods. I'm looking for something more capable of running the programs and games I've listed without as much lag.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Purchasing in the US and preferably under $1000.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Battery life and performance are definitely high priority. Don't really care about other factors.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would prefer something light (around 2-3 lb) and reasonably sized so I can carry it around for school.
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\* 13 to 15 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I occasionally use Lightroom and Photoshop for photo editing. I also occasionally run ArcGIS Pro and Timelapse (camera trap image program) for school.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly The Sims 3 and 4 with all EPs. Preferably above medium settings and I don't care too much for FPS.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen would be nice but it's not a requirement.

Looking for a Windows 10 Laptop to run Visual Studio 2019 and Bullet Hell games on Steam

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 11:13 PM PST

    Hi all!

I'm looking for a laptop PC that I can use for audio programming as well as shoot 'em up games on steam. Any advice is appreciated!

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1000-1500 USD, country of purchase is USA

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Would like something high quality that will last a while, not the cheapest option. But don't really care what it looks like.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important. Won't be taking this laptop anywhere very often.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Doesn't have to be huge, but would prefer at least 15".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    1. Coding in Visual Studio 2019 with RackAFX.

This seems like it has the heaviest requirements, and I am looking for this to run well, so following the recommendations, not the minimums.

    - At least 8GB ram - Quad core, at least 1.8GHz processor - Hard disk: SSD with at least 500GB space, would prefer 1TB. - Native ASIO drivers for sound

    Official requirements here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/releases/2019/system-requirements

    1. Playing Steam games, but nothing super heavy duty. Mostly just bullet hell games.

    2. Twitch streaming, but probably not gaming, just the programming stuff. I already have a logitech webcam and blue yeti mic, will probably use Streamlabs.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly playing SHMUPS / bullet hells. Most of them just have pixel graphics, not looking to play doom eternal or COD or anything on this laptop. This is an example of a heavy duty game I'd be playing, looks like it doesn't need as much processing power as visual studio honestly. Here are the requirements:

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/314180/Deathsmiles/

    OS: Windows 7/8/8.1/10

Processor: Intel Core i3 2GHz or higher

    Memory: 2 GB RAM

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 5000, Geforce 9500GT, Radeon HD 3650 or better

    DirectX: Version 9.0c

    Storage: 3 GB available space

    Sound Card: DirectSound-compatible sound card

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Main things are that it has plenty of space and runs fast with a decent screen/graphics card and native ASIO drivers. The most ram possible, fast quad core processor, SSD with at least 500GB space, runs Windows 10.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was looking at this option on Amazon and would be curious to hear any reviews on it, or similar recommendations. It's a nice bonus that it has a payment plan.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B089HR6CQP/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

    Thanks so much!

I posted a couple of months ago on this sub. Ordered a t14 from lenovo then. It's apparently going to be shipped in March and I can't wait that long.

Now, a t14 is on sale on Newegg. I'm stuck between this and the Asus zenbook 14 UM425IA-NH74. The major difference is probably the SSD since the processors are quite close on the performance charts. Are there any obvious pros/ cons of buying one over the other? I think both have 250-nit screens. Disappointing but can't find any other options.

Also, could you please suggest a good 500GB-1TB SSD for the t14, if I choose to go with it?

general use laptop + music recording / video editing

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:04 PM PST

hi all, i'm looking for a general use laptop that is also capable of running music recording / editing software as well as a video editing software, with the capability of using a dual-boot system. details below.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

purchasing in US, preferably under $600 but open to suggestions outside of the range.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

preferably not, unless in very good condition

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

speed / performance is my biggest thing. every laptop i've had in the past would take about 5 minutes just to load google.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

not too important, but i'd like it to be portable without being too much of a burden

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    nope

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

i mainly want to use this laptop with a DOW for recording music, as well as video editing. i won't be playing any games on it, i have my xbox for that. mainly just general use such as school work, browsing, etc, as well as music and video editing (FL Studio / Ableton, not sure which video editing software yet)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

not looking for anything specific in this category. of course i'd like a nice keyboard / cool features, but they're not necessary.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

i would also like to be able to use a dual-boot system with little to no problems. my older brother recently got me into using Kali Linux, and recommended using dual-boot instead of a virtual machine.

    thanks!

Laptop for 500-600USD mainly for older games

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I'd like it to be from 500-600 USD but I may be willing to go a little higher if it's worth it. Buying in the US.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Maybe, I'm weary about spending so much money and taking a risk..

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, build quality, battery life, no 2 in 1s

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    N/A

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Preferably 15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Gaming mostly

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The reason I'm looking for a laptop is to play Fallout: New Vegas (also a mod that injects Fallout 3 in). I'd like to run it at 60 fps on normal settings, maybe an enb but the look isn't important to me rather than the performance. Also would like to play a modded Dark Souls 1 preferably also at 60 fps but let me know if I'm thinking out of my price range. I have no prior knowledge of laptops so I have no clue what I'm looking for.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

N/A but I remember reading somewhere that it's important that I have an internal HDD or something??? Once again, no clue, sorry. 😅

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm familiar with Windows 10 atm so would like to stick with that, but convince me otherwise I'd after reading this you think I may be better off using something else. I have been using an old HP laptop from like 2012 to "play" some Fallout 3 at very very low settings and it resulted in it running super slow all the time. The disk space is always 100% and I've tried so many fixed online that I may have ended up making it worse. So here I am. If it will run games decently, I would love to branch out to some online survival games with my friends so idk if that will factor in as much but honestly I don't need that function. Also, if there is something that may be cheaper that I could be using that would also work great, please let me know! Thank you all in advance.
