My life in computer processors Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:23 PM PST I framed all the processors I've owned over the years. Each one is a phase from my life, putting this together was surprisingly nostalgic. It's been fun how each one brings back so many memories. The shadowboxes are 3d printed, cricut vinyl for the labels, I even cut the glass myself too. Not pictured is the 2600x that was handed down to my 14 year old son when he built his own computer and the 3600x I am typing this on. First Build: PC shows no signs of life (no fan spin, no motherboard LEDs turning on, etc) Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:38 AM PST Troubleshooting Help:What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list. CPU: Ryzen 5, 5600x MOBO: MSI B550 Gaming Edge Wifi RAM: Corsair Vengeance 3200 STORAGE: WD Blue 550, 1TB GPU: Gigabyte 5700 xt PSU: Seasonic FOCUS 650 (fully modular) Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. So I received my final part yesterday (PSU) and the first thing I did was to attempt to do a BIOS update for the MOBO, using the BIOS Flashback button on the back of the board. The issue I kept running into was that the LEDs on the MOBO and my USB drive would flash. The MOBO flashed 10 times (this is the only indication I get that the board has power) and completely shut off after about 5 seconds and the LED on the USB turned solid. I let it sit for ~10 minutes, just in case it was still updating, but from all I have read, the flash should take anywhere from 3-5 minutes, indicating it's completed once the board stops flashing. I tried another USB drive, but ran into the same issue. Thinking the flash was done, I decided to build at this point. Put everything together, connected the cables, connected the front panel connectors, but it shows no signs of life when I press the power button. I'm devastated. Is it possible the MOBO was DOA? List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. Ensured everything is connected properly, even tried to short the power pins but absolutely nothing happens. I have no way to to swap/test components to diagnose what might be causing the problem, other than the PSU (with the tester it came with), I've attempted looking online to see if they encountered the flash issue (blink 10 times then stop), but have not been able to find anything. Post relevant photos of build/parts here. Here are some pics. I know the power supply is unplugged here but it wasn't when I was testing. Provide any additional details you wish below. The case I have was bought used, and I realized a few of the standoffs were stripped. I don't know if the standoffs act as a ground in any way, could this be the issue? Mentally exhausted from seeing "Out of Stock" Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:55 AM PST I've been in the process of replacing my old prebuilt that died in September -- the psu fried everything except my cpu. rip rx570. Luckily, I was able to replace everything except a graphics card. At the time, the RTX 3000 cards were already released and everyone was struggling hard to purchase one. They're still struggling now. I play Apex Legends competitively with a 1080p 165hz monitor. I needed something better than my old rx570 that could utilize the full refresh rate, which lead me to the 5700XT. After hours & hours of watching benchmark videos, it had the perfect fps performance I needed, comparatively to the 2070 super. It also sold for way less than its Nvidia counterparts. Then came the biggest problem: stock availability & pricing. Okay, I thought "so I figured out what card would deliver the right performance, now what are the cons?" The AMD card was notorious for having severe driver issues, on top of having worse encoding quality on obs. As a streamer, that's a pretty major problem when comparing it to the RTX cards. NVENC seemed like the simple way to go...until I looked at the prices & availability. The RTX cards were sold at twice their respective MSRP values. Disgustingly high. I waited. The 5700XT prices remained stable. I just needed to get paid, then the choice was clear & simple. Unfortunately, by that time, those cards faced the same fate as the Nvidia ones. "Out of Stock" I'm still waiting weeks later, but w/ a bigger budget now. I also still want a PowerColor Red Devil, the RX 6800 version this time (hoping it lowers from fucking $700 to a reasonable price close to reference MSRP). Overall, I don't think it's right to keep the market like this, for consumers who just want to enjoy todays products. Scalpers have too much control & power over the supply. AMD and Nvidia seem to have little to no influence, no communication, no care for the outcome. They sell all their inventory regardless. I'm just mentally exhausted at this point -- I don't know enough to get ahead. I've joined several discords, checked twitter, and signed up for alerts. Doesn't seem to change anything in the bigger picture. Anyone else feel the same? [link] [comments]
ELI5 motherboard question (mini vs micro vs full size, b450 vs b550, vs x570) Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:36 PM PST I'm still new to building but can someone tell me the basics and ELI5 what the difference between mini-ATX, micro-ATX, and full sized ATX? Also what's the different between b450, b550, and x570? I'm looking to build a very entry level pc with a budget of $700. I don't want to sacrifice any quality but also don't want to excessively spend. [link] [comments]
Was I a fool to get a 3070 instead of the 3060ti? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:14 AM PST With the reviews and benchmarks of the 3060ti coming out I can't help but feel like I may have overspent on my 3070. Don't get me wrong I am absolutely happy with the 3070 but am I wrong for feeling like I could've saved a few more bucks had I just waited? Considering switching to PC: Any advice is appreciated Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:47 AM PST As the title states I am considering switching to PC gaming after my Xbox One broke. Upon discovering that my Xbox broke I have been contemplating between upgrading consoles or switching over to PC. I have recently started gaming a lot more than I did before (lockdowns not all bad) and I think that I could benefit from a PC. The problem is that I am a noob when it comes to PC's and know little to nothing. The main games that I will be playing on the PC will be Warzone, Madden, Cities Skyline, and Sea of Thieves. On top of gaming I will use the PC to run Serato, a DJ software. So, I have spent that past couple nights researching for hours a night. I have been jumping back and forth between YouTube and pcpartpicker, both of which have been very helpful. I have gathered a potential list for my first build and would really appreciate if any of you veterans would give it a look and give me any recommendations. All I've went off of so far is videos, forums, and reviews. I really do not want to make a purchase of this magnitude without some human opinion, so please do let me know any pieces that may not be the best they could be in the price category they are in. Below is the link to my list. I really do appreciate it as I'm sure this has been posted many times before. Thanks in advance. Posted: 01 Dec 2020 04:17 PM PST I have had constant issues to the point where some games will not start up. Sometimes a black box will appear on the screen leaving a line at the top visible where the computer is still responsive and will even show the windows when I press alt+tab. Now when I start games like Far Cry 5 or League, the computer will stop audio, give me a black screen and I have to press the reset button on the case. I have looked into event viewer and receive these errors each time:
To try to fix this, I've:
I don't know what to do at this point. it's ridiculous that I actually can't run league of legends with a $400 card [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:37 AM PST A few days ago I upgraded from a 5 year old i5 4400/r9 380/8gb RAM build to a 5 3600/1660S/16gb ram I just wanted to tell someone how amazing it is to have a responsive, snappy PC. That plays games at 60fps (I cap it here using v sync, it could probably go higher) on high settings effortlessly. My old machine wasn't a slouch, but you could definitely sense that it had to put a lot of effort into running applications, whereas now my pc acts like anything I throw at it is no big deal. Just wanted to say that as nobody I tell IRL really appreciates wtf I'm talking about. If anyone cares, I spent about £700 and hoping to sell my old machine for about £150? Bringing the cost down to £550, definitely worth while investment as this will last another 5 years at least [link] [comments]

Is my case a bottleneck for having a silent PC? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:33 PM PST Is my case limiting my potential for a "quiet" gaming pc? My current case is a Corsair Obsidian 500D, which is built mainly for aesthetics over functionality. (There is a gap along the side panels when closed which is probably allowing sound and air to escape and overall not the best airflow). I already changed the fan curves in the bios to make it silent unless I'm doing heavy gaming but even at idle my fans are noticeable. I have a 240mm radiator as my intake for my GPU (it won't fit as a top exhaust), a Noctua NH-D15 and 2 top exhaust fans Current PC: CPU: Ryzen 3900x CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 GPU: RTX 2080ti GPU Cooler: Kraken G12 + Thermaltake Water 3.0 (fans in push/pull) PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 850W [link] [comments]
Help! 25% GPU utilization, 20% CPU utilization, 25 FPS... Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:34 PM PST Troubleshooting Help:What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list. R5 3600x RTX 2070s 16GB DDR4-3200 Reverb G2 Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. I'm trying to play Project Cars 2 in VR and getting very poor performance, I checked and neither my GPU or CPU are being used at all... about 25% and 20% respectively, and with that I'm getting about 25 FPS in the headset. List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. Updated and reset BIOS, checked for updated GPU drivers. Post relevant photos of build/parts here. This is a picture of my monitor because I couldn't get all the windows in a single screenshot. SteamVR shows ~33ms per frame but that's looking at the wall, it's closer to 40ms per frame when playing. You can see from performance monitor that neither my GPU or CPU was stressed at all while playing. https://i.imgur.com/SSn1Vwe.jpg Provide any additional details you wish below. I just got the VR headset so I haven't used it much but Half Life Alyx seems to run very well... First time build, errors on boot Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:16 PM PST I'm building my first ever PC, and trying to follow the manuals religiously. I've got everything together and plugged in, but when I power it on I get 2 LED indicators on my motherboard: Boot & VGA I reread the section in my manuals and everything seems properly connected, I even tried the other port for the graphics card with no luck. I built by using pcpartpicker and it said everything I got was compatible. I'm completely lost. Is my card bad? Am I missing something obvious? Parts: Motherboard - asus tuf x570 plus CPU - ryzen 5 3600x GPU - Gigabyte Radeon rx580 Memory - Samsung 860 evo 2 TB SSD RAM - Corsair 2x16GB vengeance RGB pro Edited list for clarity [link] [comments]
Upgraded to a Gigabyte Aorus RTX 3070 Master but no display on monitors Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:12 PM PST Everything is turned on and seems to be working fine, I just can't get a display to appear. Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:13 AM PST Looking to build a new PC in the next year, but am trying to get a little more life out of a computer I built about 6 years ago until I do. This is the pc build I have and am wondering if swapping my SLI gtx 970s with a single 3060 ti will be of much help for gaming. I like playing games like Tomb Raider, Total War, GTA, and Assassin's Creed, but since I purchased a 34" 1440p monitor, it's been tough gaming without the graphics really taking a hit. Thoughts?

Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:45 PM PST I'm sure this kind of question is in this sub every couple months so I'm gonna try to keep it short and sweet. I'm 16, looking to get a job to gain a little monetary independence and put less pressure on my parents, etc. etc. I just wanted to ask how working there is, how the pay is, how they treat their employees, what kind of skills I need, etc. etc. Thanks to anyone who replies. Upgraded to 3080 and have had a weird monitor issues since Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:57 PM PST I upgraded to a EVGA 3080, but since i installed my card i cant have more than one monitor plugged in during startup or it wont show any display and the VGA led on my motherboard lights up. I have to only have one display plugged in during boot and only once that monitor shows display can i plug in the second monitor. It works if both are plugged in and i go to bios, though it only shows on one display. Things i have tried to fix it
Another thing is that the issue didnt happen when i went into sleep mode instead of shut off until about a week ago. Nothing noteworthy happened between the day it worked and the next day that it didnt work. One other odd thing is that after i reinstalled the gpu drivers, it defaulted to a weird 4:3 aspect ratio, with 1650*1050 resolution. Both my monitors are VG278Q, Motherboard is a X470 aorus ultra gaming, cpu is a 3700x, psu is a 750w corsair. Would appreciate any help as this is just a simply annoying issue, even though it doesnt affect any actual performance or usability once my pc is started. Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:01 PM PST For Context: I have ordered and received most of my pc parts and this is my first time building a pc. My Cpu is the ryzen 5 5600x so I knew that I had to flash my bios so I used the usb method. I followed it perfectly and when I went to press the button to flash my bios no light indicator came on. I waited a bit then pressed it again. Then I downloaded the 2nd most recent bios update onto the usb and it still wasn't working. Should I just return the motherboard or is it a powersupply issue. PSU: GIGABYTE GP-P750GM 750W ATX Motherboard Gigabyte B550 AORUS Elite AX I was thinking maybe the bios is already the latest version if that happened. Before my case comes I was thinking of returning it but I dont know whats the problem. [link] [comments]
Building my desktop for the first time in fifteen years. Opinions? Need suggestions for a gpu. Posted: 01 Dec 2020 04:13 PM PST So last week my alienware 17r4 2017 model blew up and i have decided to not take that risk again and build my own desktop. I managed to save my hdd and ssd but everything else will be built from scratch. Not worrying about optical drives as i have an external disk drive. The ryzen 7 3700x was on sale friday for $259. Thats why i got it over the 3600 or 3600x. The power supply was on sale for $94. The case i got from my roommate for $20. This is what i have so far: CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x MBD: MSI b450 tomahawk max atx Power supply: Power Supply 750W Fully Modular 80+ Gold Certified GAMEMAX RGB750-Rainbow Memory: 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Screen: HP VH240a 23.8-Inch Full HD 1080p IPS LED Monitor Storage: 960 evo nmve m2 (salvaged from laptop) Seagate 1tb (salvaged from laptop) Shell: Fractal design meshify c Keyboard: logitech mk 335 combo Not sure about gpu yet. Thinking gtx1070 or one of the 1660's as im on a budget. My laptop had the 1070 mobile gpu from the 2017 model. Can I use an HDMI cable on a 144 hz monitor to fully utilize its refresh rate? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 04:11 PM PST I'm thinking about buying this monitor, and if I do this will be my first ever monitor with a refresh rate above 60 hz. However, I've heard that you need to use a displayport cable in order to actually utilize high refresh rates, but I've also read that for this specific monitor, an HDMI cable is fine. So... just to clarify, if I use the HDMI cable that this monitor comes with, am I set? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Dec 2020 04:06 PM PST I have been waiting to get a 3090 for awhile now and finally have the option to. Though I originally planned on water cooling I am unsure if you can water cool the EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra with a kit. Could someone provide some insight on this? Would it be worthwhile to wait and just get a hydro copper or hybrid version? Will water cooling be worth it on this card? Is it hard to modify a card to be water cooled? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
