New Android Studio 2020.3.1 and Gradle plugin 7.0 Posted: 01 Dec 2020 11:45 AM PST https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2020/12/announcing-android-studio-arctic-fox.html Woohooo! looks like this Android Studio update will make Android Studio and Gradle versions independent. Currently all Android projects get broken when you update Android Studio or Gradle version. I will be interested in knowing which Android Studio and Gradle versions Top Apps (big companies) use?? I think big companies are using "old" Gradle versions and never update lol. Updating AS and Gradle is a pain, unless you are a Build Engineer :) [link] [comments]
Google dev support: "Chat closed"? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 04:58 AM PST Hi everyone. A few weeks ago I had to contact Google Play developer support and I've used the chat from https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/gethelp. Now, when I get to that same page, on step 3 the chat option is greyed out with a "Chat closed" label. I've tried different times, same outcome. Is anyone facing the same problem and knows why? Thank you. [link] [comments]

Another how much does it cost question Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:02 AM PST As someone who has limited programming knowledge Really quick question.. how much would it cost to have someone make me a simple todo app? (yes it's a copy of what's available, I am just really curious) Just text, date, time, reminder. Simplistic/barebone UI/UX.. Everytime I search for how much something cost, it's always upward of $5000.. Thanks! Edit: I guess what I'm asking is how long would it take a professional to make this kind of app.. Best way to hire Designers for App Store Screenshots? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 03:34 PM PST I want to hire a professional designer for app store images/screenshots (on Google Play) for my company (as a freelancer). I thought about TopTal, Upwork, and Dribble (though it's expensive just to post). and I'm about to publish a job posting on Upwork though I could not find anyone who is specialized in app store screenshot design on Upwork yet. Has anyone had experience with designers for app store screenshots? What is the best way to find a qualified designer? Any help is appreciated [link] [comments]
shared ViewModel without scoping it to the activity? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:38 AM PST I have been wondering if it may be possible to create (or if there is already an option) a shared ViewModel, but instead of passing the owner as an instanced object (with "this", or getActivity()) it would be possible to get it with a Class<?> one could store HasDefaultViewModelProviderFactory instances with a class<> as key, and if is present, then .getDefaultViewModelProviderFactory(). Given that the ViewModels are already listening to owners lifeCycle, the entry could remove itself from the hashMap at an onDestroy() callback from FragmentManager. Or even better(?) I believe this could also be possible with reflection. I'm just wondering why the only two options are everything or nothing and nothing in between. [link] [comments]
Can my app contains a hidden feature? What is the google policy about this? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 05:23 AM PST I know that iOS app store will ban any app that has a hidden feature. (section 2.3.1) but what about google? Yes I know I could use internal test , or close beta track. But that would add a little inconvenient. I'd prefer the production track. I want to include a "debug" page in my production app that accessible only for my small number of tester. Normal users can't access this "debug" page unless they know the secret tap. Will google allow this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:05 AM PST Hi, I am currently looking into an idea that I've recently had for an app, which would require users to regularly make small deposits (charged by PayPal, credit card etc.) into the App and then withdraw the money at a later time back to their PayPal, bank account etc. Now, obviously, this isn't trivial, because the money that is deposited must be stored somewhere safe (aka a bank account) and I guess this would be really hard to implement (especially from the regulatory standpoint). Before I give up on this idea, I just wanted to ask if any of you would know a solution or tool for this. Cheers! [link] [comments]
A question for experienced devs: What is the importance of certifications, if anything? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 10:00 AM PST Normally, students are told that certifications are a test of your skills and will help you "stand out from the crowd" when job hunting, either because it shows commitment or it's some evidence of 'prestige'. A scroll through the CSCareerQuestions subreddit will quickly tell you otherwise. For Android, I'm curious about the Google Associate Android Developer Certification. I don't reasonably expect it to be a life changing investment but wouldn't there be value in testing your knowledge and being able to put 'Google' on your resume and mean it, if for nothing more than added visibility? To me, an amateur, that sounds pretty valuable. What are your opinions or experiences? It seems to be a hit-or-miss situation, but I get concerned when I read comments saying having a certification will put you at a disadvantage, as if a hiring manager will spitefully pass on your application because you attained a cert. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

Decompiling an APK, modifying, and installing - will it work? Posted: 01 Dec 2020 12:18 PM PST So first of all, I'm aware of the fact that I would need to play with the device's settings to install it over usb and not through the app store. The app in question is an eBook reader with text-to-speech. Unfortunately, there's no option to slow down the speech, so my grandfather is having trouble understanding it (and I welcome any alternative, free of paid, that can read in hebrew, allows control over speed, and can read DRM-protected books). Right now, the lowest-effort idea I have is to decompile the APK, shove in a phase vocoder to slow down speech, and compile it back. But would that work? But, I know very little about app developments and security measures (I've written an app years ago, which were mostly other peoples' code stitched together and for personal use, so I didn't put much effort into that), so I don't know if this would work.
