Initramfs unpacking failed: decoding failed. Error when installing Ubuntu 20.04 Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:28 PM PST I'm in the process of dual booting the latest Ubuntu LTS release alongside my pre-existing Windows 10 install. I'm having a weird error when installing via USB: Initramfs unpacking failed: decoding failed. I have been searching the web and have tried all manner of troubleshooting steps but nothing seems to fix it. The error alongside lots of graphical glitches (I think it's text displayed incorrectly) I have tried:
Lots of forum posts talk about changing the decompression settings but as I am installing and can't actually get into the OS yet I can't do this can I? Would require a running shell. None of this has done anything. In fact, in some cases I get different errors - some MCE's complaining about the CPU - although now I can't seem to get it to do this again. As far as I'm aware there are no hardware issues though as I can boot into and use the Win 10 install just fine. Specs

Youtube makes laptop overheat? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:49 PM PST Hi all! I'm using a macbook air 7, running awesomeWM + ubuntu. I use Brave as a browser, and have installed tlp to keep the power and temperature consumption in check. [link] [comments] |
[GNOME vs XFCE] , if XFCE is faster, low resource use; what is the point of gnome, (casual use) Posted: 02 Nov 2020 08:53 PM PST I dont know what these things are when i want to download a distro(linux mint etc) i usually get 2 options: 1 Standard with gnome 2 Lite with Xfce Lite is faster, less resourced(they say) so WHY and WHY NOT chose Specifically about software support and customization [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:25 PM PST Whenever I try and use tmux, zsh colors get really weird. How it looks normally: https://imgur.com/a/Gyj4Ht1 How it looks in tmux: https://imgur.com/a/r8gxNyW bash works fine. I can't find like anything online about this other than this, but it didn't fix it. Thanks in advance for anyone that helps! edit: screen also works fine with zsh and bash. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:02 PM PST Yes, this has been asked before but I am not really looking for help. Just a plea. Someone please port foobar to Linux that doesn't require wine. Honestly, as I transition more and more into Linux, the one thing I truly miss is the library management capabilities of foobar - I haven't found anything that comes close to foobar's intuitiveness. Perhaps Audacious is the closest. I have a fairly largish music library (excess of 100GB) and foobar on Windows handled it like a champ. So much so that every new Windows system I've set up over the last decade, it's the second software I install after Chrome/Firefox. foobar on Wine is sluggish and can't seem to handle the same music folders that it has breezed through on my Windows systems for the last decade. I hated, hated Rhythmbox so damn much. I don't really care for a pretty interface - and RB is anything but pretty but neither is Foobar; I just require a low resource using music player that has the library management capabilities of Foobar. Currently trying out DeaDBeef. Will let y'all know what I think. So far I feel like the interface apes Foobar and is about it. Okay, rant over. What do y'all miss from the Windows eco system that you wish Linux had a version of, or a good alternative to? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:54 AM PST I would like to keep these two things separate. I know I could create two users (one for my business, one for personal) on Mint, which would allow me to have things saved in the appropriate place, different programs etc. A more extreme option would be creating a separate partition, which seems like a lot of overkill. Two questions:

Small and user-friendly distro for an HP Stream? Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:32 AM PST As a forewarning, I'm a super noob when it comes to this stuff. I've done a bit of research, but I'm not nearly tech-savvy enough to figure this all out without help. Last night I decided to break out my laptop and immediately remembered why I stopped using it -- its got 32gb of storage, and Windows 10 is using 28 of them for pre-installed garbage that I can't get rid of. I wanted to do a full factory reset, but lo and behold that the amount of space I have left is insufficient for a factory reset. I started researching solutions and alternatives, but the only real suggestion I could find was to reinstall Windows 10 entirely, and some people suggested downgrading to the 32-bit version to save space. At the point that I have to install an entirely new OS anyway, I figured its worth biting the bullet and looking into Linux alternatives. Given how little storage I have, I figure the smaller and simpler the distro is, the better. I looked a little bit into Linux Mint, but I don't want to jump into installing something without knowing it's gonna be efficient for this tiny-ass laptop. I have a desktop (albeit shitty itself), so I mostly use the laptop for internet browsing, sometimes Discord, but nothing major given its capacity. Any suggestions/tips would be helpful! I can not install ubuntu pls help Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:28 AM PST |
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:04 PM PST This is a more general question than a linux specific one, but I figured some here will know the answer. By setting up my own Ubuntu server last year, I gained a huge amount of insight into what Internet is, which is basically file acces on servers with usernames and passwords. All the glossy apps and services we love seem to work around that simple system, with seemingly infinite variations in application. But how does something like a Zoom call service work? Is a video call some sort of dynamic file that users with the link can access? I don't get what the 'what' of a Zoom call is. Or is it not access to a file, but access to each other;s cameras? Linux installation - Losing my mind - two USB's tried - Both now not showing up! Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:56 PM PST So I have tried downloading pop os. I have used etcher to flash to usb. Both times it has made the USB unreadable. Now I have no fucking idea what is going on. Can someone help before I jump off a bridge? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:35 PM PST I need to change my configuration to AHCI if I want to boot into Ubuntu and to IRST if I want to boot into Windows. Tbh I don't even know the difference between AHCI and IRST (I'm a total noob), all I want is to have both Windows and Ubuntu work on whichever one is better. Windows and Linux are both installed on the same M.2 SSD (Lenovo Legion Y520). I could reinstall Linux, but I need to keep Windows [link] [comments] |
Looking to Build Home Server from Old Gaming PC Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:28 PM PST Hello everyone! Just put together a new gaming PC and would now like to convert my old machine into a Linux based media server. The specs on the machine are complete overkill for this purpose, but its already built and ready. My main goal is to setup Plex to share my pre-existing library, and also setup things such as Sonarr, Couchpotato, Radarr, and Lidarr with the intent of being fully automated. My secondary goal, being that this is still a pretty good gaming machine by todays standards, is potentially have it dual boot capable so friends can come over and play LAN games with me. I know there are already some guides out there on setting this stuff up, but I was looking for some feedback that is more up to date. A bunch of the guides I've stumbled across are 1 year+ old, and I wasn't sure what the best course of action would be today. As for my Linux knowledge base, I can fumble around a decent bit and do have terminal experience, but I am certainly no expert. Any recommendations/links would be extremely appreciated. Sorry if this is asked a million times around here! Thank you in advance. Edit: Here's the specs of the machine in question, in case that changes anything. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Nov 2020 11:34 AM PST I recently swapped my motherboard because the previous one died for some reason. I always had my ethernet connection working but it doesn't seem to work on this motherboard. I really don't know why. I bought a USB to ethernet adapter which does work but keeps cutting out. It's named "Atolla USB 3.0 Hub, Aluminum USB to Ethernet Adapter with 3 USB 3.0 ports and RJ45 Gigabit Network LAN Port - USB Splitter with Type C Adapter for Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP, Linux, Mac OS X" on Amazon. It has a realtek ethernet chip and I did install the driver but there is no difference to it. Is there some USB 3.0 ethernet adapter that does work without any issues? thx [link] [comments] |
What’s the difference between apt install, apt update and apt upgrade? Posted: 02 Nov 2020 11:41 PM PST I know the difference between apt update and apt upgrade but what does apt install do? Is apt upgrade just for Ubuntu? Please explain. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Linux as Dailydriver on Mobile Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:44 AM PST Im currently planning on replacing my Iphone. My aim is to find an alternative and somewhat recent phone that can run Linux. It is not important which distro in particular. With that being said, it is important that basic phone tasks like calling and mobile internet work. I dont care if i need to tinker a bit but I do want a working end result. Thanks already. :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:44 AM PST Hey guys! I'm posting this for my friend who does not use Reddit. I'm new to Linux (he's the more tech savy one), so sorry in advance if information is missing or if this is a stupid mistake. A few days ago my friend did a complete Arch Linux reinstall, which seemed to be fine at first. He was able to start Sway with no error messages. He then installed additional graphics drivers (mesa, vulkan-intel, vulkan-radeon), which apparently broke something, because since then Sway refuses to start. The output of Sway -d is: He suspects the error has to do with the fact that he has two graphic cards (Intel UHD Graphics 620 and AMD Lexa Pro). Also something might be wrong with the version check of amdgpu_device_initialize, because he's on Kernel version 5.9.3, so the DRM version should be up to date as well? No idea how to check that though. Things we already tried (in no specific order):
We would really appreciate if you have any idea what might cause this problem, if there are any more things we could look at or even where the appropriate place to ask for help might be. If any information is missing feel free to ask! (Also adding the obligatory disclaimer that I'm not a native speaker so please excuse any exotic grammar) [link] [comments] |

Distro recommendation for 32 bit system Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:46 AM PST Hi all, I've recently was gifted an old server from a friend and was hoping to use the current internals for something instead of junking them. It's a Pentium 4 and I'm fairly certain the motherboard doesn't support booting from USB, so I'm looking for a 32 bit distro that can fit on a cd. Is there anything nowadays small enough that will fit on a cd or would I be stuck using something outdated? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Potentially borked my linux install Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:46 AM PST I bit the bullet a while back and ditched the dual-boot setup in favour of Manjaro KDE on my desktop and Manjaro XFCE on my laptop. After a couple of issues (unsure if related) with the KDE version, I decided to use XFCE on both. I couldn't find much in the way of useful documentation/guides as to how to go about it, so in my infinite wisdom I decided to just wing it. Tried uninstalling KDE using and installing XFCE using Since then some of my settings do not persist after reboot as before (background, themes, among a few other things), and I still have a bunch of KDE related programs/dependencies/what have you installed. My login screen has changed, and the general look of the DE is also different to my XFCE laptop. When what I did obviously didn't work, I tried installing a fresh Manjaro XFCE on the Manjaro KDE partition. /home has its own, separate partition, so that was preserved (If I had to guess, I'd say this is the source of my issue? Not uninstalling everything properly so things are conflicting?). Unless you guys can help salvage whatever the hell mess I've made, I'm not opposed to a fresh install. All my main partitions (boot, root, home) are on a small SSD, with personal files going on a HDD. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2020 08:42 AM PST I installed a VNC on my Ubuntu server and i am getting really confused since its not coming out right, i have tried tightvnc, tigervnc and x11vnc, the problem is that its quite slow and the taskbar is missed up and there isn't a app button for some reason. Maybe i am doing it wrong can anyone help? [link] [comments] |
