How do I fix the CPU fan on my ASUS laptop?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:50 PM PST

My 2012 17” MacBook Pro died (graphics card). The repair shop says it’s not worth fixing. Can I sell it for parts? They suggested they can recycle it for me for free but is that a scam? Should I just give them my laptop?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:54 PM PST

I'm looking for a decent cheap laptop to make some music on. I want it to be able to handle a music software and storage for songs. Really don't wanna spend more than $700-800 for one. Looking at an Acer Swift 3 currently but just want some advice if this is anything worth getting. Thanks

    Microsoft Surface Book 3

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:24 PM PST

My partner just recently purchased a Surface Book 3 for her job. Web development and such..

Had it for 6 days. It ran netflix for 3 of those days.. and that is about all.

The screen blacked out last night and decided it wouldn't come back on. Tried alot of troubleshooting.

Seems something has actually just shit the bed. How sad.. $2500-3000

    Have I made a mistake?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:02 PM PST

Hi! I've ordered a Dell XPS 15 9500 with the i9 core. I'm now reading that it suffers from thermal throttling and in some situations ends up being slower than the i7 version? Even then, it seems that the margin of gained performance is so slim that maybe I should try to get the i7 instead. Thanks.

Would my cpu cause a bottleneck if I was to buy a GTX 3080 as an external gpu?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 11:35 AM PST

    My current laptop has an i7-8750H @ 2.20GHz, with a GTX 1070 max-Q.

If I wanted to get a 3080 as an external gpu in order to game on a 4k 120hz screen, would my cpu cause a bottleneck?

I need help finding out what charger connection my laptop has. My laptop charger broke and i've been looking for a replacement charger, but i'm not sure what type it uses. The connector is roughly 11mm long, and 5.5mm in diameter. It does not have a pin in it and has an inner hole diameter of 2mm.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:42 PM PST

Hello guys , so most of you would be familiar with touchpad gestures, so when i triple touch the touchpad, the search bar pops up, the bar remains white for a second and after that all the apps appear on it, is there anyway to speed up the process, like instantly get to see the apps ?

Is there such thing as a fully interchangeable laptop

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:26 PM PST

a lot of things in a laptop can't be replaced or upgraded like the gpu normally but is there a kind of laptop that IS fully upgradeable, and what's the name of that kind (or model)?

    Need Laptop Recommendations (~1000$)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:06 PM PST

Evening everyone. I would like some place to start, if you have a moment.

I'm going to be shipping out to Japan to teach English. I plan on bringing my gaming PC with me, but while I am there I believe that a strong laptop would help while I am traveling between schools/doing Zoom classrooms.

-Decent Battery (has to last at least half of a school day 6hrs, it'll probably be plugged in though)

    -Decent/Great webcam

-Decent/Great gaming ability (I'll only be playing WoW, R6: Siege, indie games. It'll probably be used for a lot of Youtube/twitch viewing as well). I dont expect to be playing ultra on any of these games, but I want something that has longevity

-Great for stuff like word processing and excel?

-Somewhat lightweight (I want a laptop that is sturdy enough to be taken around all over town and take some bumps but not heavy to the point that I feel like I'm carrying extra books).

My budget is $1000, preferably lower but I'll shoot for something higher if it would work. I want something that is going to last at least two years without becoming sluggish and a chore to use.

At this present moment I am considering:
    Lenovo Legion 5

    Acer Nitro 5

I've heard these things go on sale quite a bit, and that they are not worth the asking price of around 1000 USD. I have been suggested the Lenovo Thinkpads since I will be doing mostly work on these machines... but there are so many things to consider I am just not sure what to do.

Any advice, budget adjustments, recommended specs-to-price, would be helpful, as I am not knowledgeable at all about laptops.

    Odd-off questions:

Should I wait until I am in Japan/have a laptop in Japan be shipped to me when I arrive? Would that be cheaper/safer considering I wont need to use a converter?

I'm leaving within 2.5 weeks. I prefer ordering through Amazon since I have prime.

    Thanks for your advice.

    Legion 7?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:05 PM PST

I know that within the Legion 5/5i series, there is both an AMD and an Intel version.

Can anyone find anything about a Legion 7? I know there's a 7i (Intel) version. I personally wasn't able to (at least in the US market).

The reason for my question is that I want the bigger battery that comes with the 7i (80Wh) but/because I can't customize-up the 5i battery (from the 60Wh). But I'd also like the lower power consumption of the Ryzen 4000 CPUs.

    Does this magical beast exist?

Asus tuf gaming FX505du coil whine after bios update to bios version 315 (2020/10/12)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:31 PM PST

    Hi

I have a 3 month old Asus tuf gaming FX505du laptop. After I updated to bios version 315 I realised that my laptop started to coil whine, but only when I play games. If I change to another application the noise immediately goes away. I took it to repair, but they said that this is normal, but I find it irritating and before the update there was no noise like that.

Is it possible that the new bios version changed the voltage settings, and that causes the noise? Is there anyone who faces the same problem?

    Laptop recommendation for WFH?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 11:45 AM PST

My (always crappy) HP Pavillion is about to bite the dust

I am looking for recommendations on a reliable/quality 15.6 laptop:

-Can run all Adobe programs (including Adobe Premiere) -Backlit keyboard -USB-C ports -HDMI port -Expandable DDR4 ram -512 gb SSD -graphics card (not integrated) -High quality display

(Ethethernet plug would be nice but not make or brake)

Battery life is not most important factor.

There are so many laptops with these specs I cannot decide....

    MSI GE65 Raider

    Is it worth getting MSI GE65 Raider with i7 9750H, 32GB RAM, RTX 2070, 15.6" 240Hz and 1TB SSD for $1740?

It's an exhibition model without any problems, just slight cosmetic imperfections

    Is this a good deal? $789 for an i5 with a 2060.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 11:08 AM PST

I'm looking at getting a gaming laptop, but I want to stay as far under $1000 as I can while still getting something decent. I mostly play games like Rising World, Space Engineers, Rimworld & Torchlight II. No AAA games, so I'm not looking for a high end GPU. I mostly just want something that can give me a solid 60 FPS on medium settings without melting itself. I found this deal on Walmart.com and I'm wondering if it is good value. Does anyone know if this laptop is good?

    Laptop recommendations please?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:42 AM PST

I want to be able to run netflix on chrome and sketchup, another chrome page, or maybe minecraft at the same time, or run Sims 4 on its own. Don't want to spend more than £250-£300 since it's probably only going to last another 4 years anyway. I like drawing in sketchup or scroll imgur on half the screen while I watch something on the other half.

Currently have: HP Pavillion, no model sticker (it peeled off ages ago when the rubber feet did), no model information on machine, 4 years old (bought July 2016), paid £250 for it. Put a piece of tape on it to hold the power cable in place and it hasn't died since then. The power socket is loose, so is the battery. When both happen at the same time it goes PING and it stops working. It lives on the sofa, so the most it gets moved around is to pick it up and put it down where I was sitting or next to me.

Dell G5 15 SSD upgrade and cooling solution?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:33 AM PST

    Hi all,

    I've got a dell G5, it has a 1660Ti, core i9 and a 512Gb ssd

Does anyone know if these laptops will take a standard M2 ssd? Or do they require some proprietary one?

And it runs HOT, so hot that I believe it'll be dead in a year. Run temps of 90-100c are not okay, I don't know why dell would release something with such inadequate cooling.

Is there any way to fix this? I already raise the back by 2"

    Cheers for any help

    WiFi connection problem on 2020 HP ENVY x360 15 r4500u (WiFi 6)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:17 AM PST

So I've recently got this laptop and it was all fine for a few day but recently the WiFi connection seem to be really low compared to the other devices at home at 1st I though it was bc I was far from router and that maybe the case.

Later it showed no connections available when there are, my phone is connected to WiFi at this point, moving near router did help but I did a network reset which restarted the laptop and the problem seemed solved

And finally a 3rd time (a few min back the making of this post) it went off again with no connections in sight while there are. This time moving closer to the router didn't help. I ran troubleshooter and it says there is a hardware/driver problem with the WiFi card. After doing network reset for another time its showing the available WiFi networks but I feel it may occur again

Can anybody help and maybe give a few suggestions? Is it a driver problem? if so will it go if I update the drivers?

Edit: after network reset it shows no problem or pending updates for WiFi drivers

Which laptops are most heat and moisture resistant for use in a Infrared sauna

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 09:57 AM PST

Moisture is actually minima (mainly sweat)l, I've used phablets with no problem but since I plan on having a laptop in a hot FIR sauna for hours on a daily basis I wonder what brand or line would be best suited. Seems Thinkpads are claimed to be Mil-Spec and heat/water tested, is this legit?
