Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:27 PM PST Dual monitor no signal I'm having issues with my dual monitor setup. Last night it worked fine. I shut down my pc and this morning when I turned it back on it wasn't working. My main monitor is connected from hdmi to HDMI to the gpu. My second monitor is DisplayPort to DisplayPort to gpu. The one that isn't working is the one connected to DisplayPort. I do not have another monitor with DisplayPort to test the cable. All of my drivers are updated. Only thing working is the HDMI port on my gpu (rtx 2060 super). DisplayPort cable looks fine no damages. My pc isn't detecting the monitor at all. Any suggestions or ideas what it could be? Things I tried: (no signal) -reboot pc -changed input from monitor -used for previous drivers -unplugged monitor for 10 min from power -trying the other DisplayPort on gpu -unplugged everything off and reboot -reinstalled Nvidia experience and drivers -changed refresh rate -windows extended display setting [link] [comments]
Screen intermittently becomes flickering white solid Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:39 AM PST The screen is periodically failing on my desktop computer. The normal image is suddenly replaced by a flickering grey/white screen, sometimes with a horizontal line in it. No image is visible -- it's just a flickering square the size of the screen, or sometimes two squares if there is a horizontal line. Once this happens, only a hard restart will restore the normal screen... for a while. It definitely feels like a hardware failure. It occurs at random times and does not seem associated with anything that I am doing with the machine. My question: Is there anything else I can do at home to diagnose or fix this, or am I just screwed and need to replace the video card? Details: Here's what I tried so far. These did NOT affect the problem.
I am teaching during the pandemic and making videos/Zooms with this thing. It is a 2018 Alienware Aurora R7 gaming desktop that is out of warranty. It's running Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) with 64 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti with 12 GB VRAM. This is a work computer but it is going to be tough to get tech support. Odds are if I take it in, they'll be unable to reproduce the problem as it is quite intermittent. It will take them a week to do it and I will be without this computer. They may then return it to me unchanged -- they've done that before. This is a very difficult moment for that to happen with my classes. Unfortunately the problem only happens occasionally, always at the worst possible time for my teaching!! I'm OK with computers. My take is that I am screwed and the graphics card has failed. I'm wondering if there's anything else it might be that would be diagnosable or even fixable on site before I take the step of bringing it in. I've done some googling but I'm not finding other reports of this flickering white/black mess. I really appreciate any ideas! It's so great that volunteers will help with this kind of thing on Reddit! Really a lifesaver! [link] [comments]
Macbook Pro 2017 USB-C ports loose and cable will not catch to charge/power. Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:44 PM PST Are there any workarounds? The ports have been loose for a while, but this is the first time I can't get the charger to latch. I do not live near an Apple store. My laptop went in for service in July to have the logic board replaced. That was the last day of the warranty. At the least, I'd love to be able to power the laptop long enough to get things off of it for school tonight. [link] [comments]
Games crash minutes after launch with new RAM installed Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:12 PM PST So I just bought some RAM sticks from someone on the FB marketplace. They are two sets of 2x8 Corsair Vengeance PRO 3200MHz sticks (I do not know why he did not buy the 4x8 pack) and ever since I have been using these sticks my games crash nonstop. I have been testing them in pairs based on their serial numbers (assuming that's how ordering a pair works) and the first set did the same thing. The second set lasts a little longer, but the problem is still there. I use the same settings that I did before on all of my games, so theoretically nothing should be wrong. The worst part is that I'm an IT and I can't even find a straightforward answer on this. Any and all help would be appreciated. [link] [comments]

I've received an encrypted email as a response to an email I sent, but I can't decrypt it. Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:08 AM PST I use the Mail app on Mac for my private email, which in turn is connected to my gmail account. I won't go into too much detail, but let's just say that the organisation I sent the email to are very security aware. I received a reply this morning, but I can't see the actual message. The Mail app just says "Unable to decrypt message", and if I view it in Gmail I can just see the smime.p7m file. Reasonably, since I was the one who sent the first message in the thread and it was addressed to me there should be a way of decrypting it. I've downloaded a P7M Viewer, but that only lets me see some metadata (Username, common name, email etc. of the sender) and information about the actual encryption (Signature, format, hashing etc.) Surely there mush be a way I can decrypt this message? (I'm not unfamiliar with Terminal shenanigans if that's necessary, but I'm not a wizard either. ) [link] [comments]
PC randomly no longer lets me play certain games? Posted: 02 Nov 2020 04:38 PM PST So I have recently got into divinity original sin 2 and had been playing for weeks. All of a sudden a couple of days ago, while playing the game my PC will make the shutting off sound and my mouse, keyboard and monitor turn off (monitor is still on it just goes black because there is no signal). But my PC is still lit up. The fans for my cpu and gpu are still spinning and the RGB is still all on. My headset cuts out and disconnects though. This happens about 2-10 minutes into the game session now. I have tried everything I can think of. Uninstalled drivers and reinstalled. Reinstalled windows. Pulled out my gpu and put it back in again and I still have the issue. The worst part is it has now spread to all of my other Steam games. Risk of rain 2 now does it, so does the Witcher 3. But games out side of steam seem to be fine. LOL and Minecraft don't shut down. I have stress tested my gpu and cpu and they only ever go to about 83c when running 100% and they never shut down during the test. I'm also monitoring the temp while playing and it barely goes over 66 for both my cpu and gpu so it not overheating. The only way I can actually use my PC after it does this is by manually holding down the power button and and Turing it back on again. I'm all out of ideas. Can anyone help? MacBook Pro - Migration Assistant Fail. Lost everything. Posted: 02 Nov 2020 05:57 PM PST Hey all, As the title suggests, I lost everything during a transfer using Migration assistant. Was migrating my MBP 2019 (OS X Catalina) to a brand new MBP 2020 (also Catalina). Had the migration set up and began running it transferring from mbp19=>> mbp20. When I saw it would take 7 hours, I stopped the process and re set up the migration putting the mbp19 into target disk mode, connecting a thunderbolt between them, then running it again. After a while I checked in on it and the transfer was hanging at a "looking for files to transfer" screen. When it seemed like it was a fail, I stopped the transfer and rebooted. I was not able to boot into either machine. The mbp20 (destination) was predictably bricked, but the older mbp19(source) could only boot into the screen that allows you to select users, and then crashed when I selected my user, suggesting that the user was partially erased. Since then, I have tried mounting the mbp19 in target disk mode, but my user only has a few files left in it. No sign of the standard Desktop/Documents/Music, etc... I tried running Data rescue on the drive, but it doesn't see any files to recover. Have I totally boned myself? Any way to recover any of this? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
