Posted: 04 Nov 2020 12:08 PM PST I have two USB-C ports that stopped working. One is the charging port and the other is lightning port for data transfer. Both don't work anymore, I took it to a shop for free inspection. Their quote was $205 total for labor and parts. Apparently the jacks are damaged so he needs to desolder and add new parts in onto the motherboard. I just want to know am I being ripped off or is this reasonable pricing? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:07 PM PST I have a lenovo legion 5 with a ryzen 7 4800h and a 1660ti. I noticed very rarely sometimes that my battery level randomly falls to about 96 percent or something around that even when my laptop is plugged in, my laptop still charges as I drained the battery fully and it charged fully. Does anyone know the reason for these drops to 96 percent while plugged in [link] [comments]
SPEAKER UPGRADE for Acer Nitro 5 17.3" (AN517-52-52T3) ??? Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:19 PM PST I bought an Acer Nitro 5 17.3" (AN517-52-52T3) and I think I got a good value so far. One problem! the speakers are very quiet, even at max volume and there are no solutions that change this at a software/OS level and I'd like to UPGRADE them. Has anyone done this? Is it possible? Here are the replacement speakers. Again, I don't want these, I want an upgrade. But I am posting it to show the connectors and such: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-AN515-41-AN515-42-AN515-51-23-Q28N2-001/dp/B07Q8C5Y19 Is there any way I can buy beefier speakers for this unit? Thanks in advanced! [link] [comments]
Seriously bad performance on ASUS tuf gaming laptop Posted: 04 Nov 2020 02:13 PM PST About 2 years ago I got an Asus tuf fx504 with an i7-8750h 8gb and a 1060 and just when the warranty ended it started to hard freeze out of nowhere on relatively low spec games (rainbow 6, league of legends). But I could kinda live with it but now it's can literally only run league and no other games I tried to get back into r6 after doing a factory reset but I get like 15fps at lowest settings, and recently I tried Genshin impact and couldn't reach 30 FPS at lowest settings I've tried all these throttle stop programs etc. But none of them have changed anything at all I'm wondering if it's worth just getting a new computer or is there anyway to fix this? 4.5 years after battery has 50% capacity but I get much less battery life Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:44 PM PST Hello, So according to powercfg /batteryreport (run it on command promt) my battery capacity dropped from 41 mWh to 21 mWh after 4.5 years. Back then I could use my laptop for 1.5-2 hours surfing the net (videos, articles etc.), right now I get max 15-20 min of similar surfing. This is 1/6 of the original battery life. Does that make any sense? [link] [comments]
How does my laptop core temperature get so hot so quickly? Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:29 PM PST Right after turning my laptop on after it has been idle for a few hours, the core temperature reads about 50 degrees Celsius. It should not be able to reach that temperature that quickly. I am using Core Temp 1.16 for the temperature readings [link] [comments]
Buying new battery, what should I look for? Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:22 PM PST Hello, I have my laptop for about 5 years now and its battery life has gotten pretty bad. I am thinking about buying a new laptop battery. The official acer service is asking for about 100 euros to change the battery. I found cheaper batteries online and I am thinking about changing it on my own, it shouldn't be that hard (I have already opened and clean my pc, put thermal paste etc). Some online shops are selling the battery for 70 euros, which sounds like a regular prize but I found some other shops selling it for about 40 euros. How risky is it buying a cheap battery? Theoretically making a battery should not be a very complicated thing... [link] [comments]

Hiiiiiiiiiii - do you have to format or setup an external ssd? Posted: 04 Nov 2020 12:57 PM PST Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. I don't know much about compooters. I've just bought Samsung's T7 external ssd for my laptop. When it arrives, will I need to create a partition or install any software, or can I immediately begin installing games on that drive? I don't need it to be encrypted or anything, it's just gonna stay at home with me storing my games. I am using Windows 10! [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 Nov 2020 11:29 AM PST I'm looking at different options for a new workstation laptop. I do motion design and video editing, and I have the specs pretty much ironed out. I've had great luck with my Asus Rog that's now quite old and not nearly beefy enough to handle the work I do. I want to stick with a laptop for portability potential (I know, I know-- it's much more expensive and less power than I could get in a desktop, but it's what I need right now). I just came across a Sager laptop that (built-out) is about $1,000 less than the MSI and Asus models I've been looking at. It has a AMD Ryzen 9 3900 processor which I was surprised to see in a laptop. I'm going to beef it up with 64 GB of RAM and 2x 1 TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVME SSDs. (And it has a Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070 Graphics card. ) My concern is that I've read some reviews that say these machines run hot and loud. The person I chatted with at the company about the Sager laptop says it'll be fine, and I can upgrade the cooling system (with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Thermal Paste - GPU and CPU or IC Diamond Thermal Compound). I don't know anything about the cooling part of this, and my concern is still that it'll be too hot and loud and potentially won't run smoothly because of this. He also said that it's just the name recognition that makes this machine so much less expensive. Any thoughts on whether or not this would be a good purchase? The $1000 savings is really appealing. The other machines I've been looking at are--

Advice: might switch from a Mac... Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:25 AM PST So I've been a Mac user for almost 15 years now. And though I enjoy the experience, some things are starting to put me off a bit. So much so that I've been thinking about switching nu Mac Mini 2018 i5 for a Windows laptop... And I need some recommendations to consider. I have a Dell Lattitude 5500 from work that I've been enjoying quite a bit. Mostly the build quality and the keyboard. Though the orientation is a bit off for me: the numeric keypad puts the alphabetic pad too much to the left for me. Things I'm looking for: - no numeric keypad - good display: I do a lot of photo editing in Capture One and Photoshop - good keyboard: I write a lot for my living - user replaceable parts: I want to upgrade the ram or memory when I feel like it - I don't care too much about graphics: I won't be gaming on it or doing video editing. - enough processing power: I convert the odd video in Handbrake - 15" seems large enough. 13" could also be good enough. - can be used easily as a desktop replacement. I'll be using it at home at my desk mostly and I want to connect my monitor, keyboard, hard disks etc. easily. Could you recommend me a laptop with this shopping list? [link] [comments]
