Got hired as a Data Technician I for Google (3 month contract)!

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:20 PM PST

Hi all, I would like to thank this sub for all the advice and posts! I am starting soon and have no experience whatsoever. Does anybody know what a normal workday would consist of being a Data Center Technician I? The job i applied for was Computer Technician and then later found out it was a Data Center Technician role. It is a 3 month contract and I am hoping for an extension. Do you think it is possible to get a permanent position from a 3 month contract? Thanks!

    Edit: Data "Center" technician

What lucrative skill to learn in free time? (1h a day for studying, hoping to freelance in 2-3years)

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 04:27 AM PST

    Hi,

I can spend about 1h a day to learn. I would like to have a possibility of freelancing, i.e. working during weekends, being able to put in some additional work to get extra money when it's needed.

Is there any IT skill that you could advise? Is it realistic to expect to start earning in 2-3 years? I don't have any IT background, apart from MS excel which I'm quite good at. Sorry if the question sounds lame.

Thank you and have a nice day

AWS Solutions Architect vs Accenture Consultant

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 06:23 AM PST

Currently, I'm an Accenture analyst and I'll be promoted to Consultant in January to work focusing on Machine Learning and Computer Vision (smth that I really like).

But I received an offer to become a solutions architect after 6m training at AWS ( Tech U program)

The salary of both are equivalent, money is not the problem. I'm wondering what is better in terms of career and learning.

At Accenture, the job is interesting but is more focused on PoCs and the team level is pretty low in comparison to what I expect to find at AWS. So I believe that I could learn a lot and set a new level in my career.

However, I've good opportunities to grow at Accenture, but I believe that an exit could be hard. I'll not be as good as expected for my career level (Accenture doesn't go deep in tech, is just consulting and PPTs).

In the next 3 years, I'd like to start managing teams and I believe that to be a good manager it is important to know well all aspects of business and implementation. I believe that I would learn this at amazon, but according to my searches, the career progression at AWS is not as fast as Accenture and I'm afraid to be stuck at the same level for years.

    Any opinions on that?

    Geek Squad as Experience

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 08:47 AM PST

Hello! Love the subreddit. Long time lurker here. My question is does Geek Squad hold any value as far as work experience goes for IT jobs? None in specific. I am currently in college pursuing a B.A in Computer Science and Cyber Security. I have applied to a few internships but my local Best Buy has some geek squad openings. I am aware of the stigma surrounding geek squad as more sales people than technicians. Thanks all you great techies!

Hi, Im a 23 yo french student doing a 2 years apprenticeship for my master degree as a QA engineer in a cybersecurity company. I was so lucky to find a company for this apprenticeship because Im only programming since 1 year and a half, I started with C and had to learn Python a few months ago for my position in QA. I will be with this company until September 2022. My master degree is in information systems so I dont do a lot of coding at school. My goal for this 2 years is to build a good portfolio to try to go in a big tech company after or to be able to freelance Im not sure exactly which one now. I would like to learn web dev on the side and build good projects in my spare time. I would like some tips to know where to start ? Which language? Tips on building a portfolio?

    Thanks you :)

    Changing careers?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 07:41 AM PST

I'm really contemplating changing career paths. I got an associate's degree in EET in 2017. So far my experience is in electronics/maintenance technician roles. This consists of a lot less actual electronics than I anticipated. I'm not fulfilled or mentally stimulated in my job most days. I have been giving some serious thought to going into either networking or programming. Both are interesting to me and I have a basic understanding of them, but mostly because there is a better job market where I'm from and also the possibility of working remotely in the future appeals to me.

Just wondering if anyone else has found themselves in this position.

Have I taken the wrong first job?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 03:24 AM PST

I have just finished university with a network and security degree and have taken a job as a network engineer, however it is not what I was expecting as I am effectively just doing support (phone, email etc.) and do not enjoy that. The company is for cloud managed IoT stuff and is growing well, as well as provides good benefits so I am not worried about that. I am the first person in the department in my country and was told this was an excellent place to be as I could easily progress to management. From the salary and interview process, I was expecting the role to be much more challenging than it is.

However, I feel I am not really learning the skills I want to learn, as I would like to go into telecoms or broadcasting in the near future, and I don't want to be stuck in a job role which I do not like and cannot progress from. Does anyone have any advice or in a similar situation? Should I start to look for something else? I have looked at some other roles that I would like that aren't for graduates and I feel under-qualified for them.

    Thanks in advance!

Cabling tech a legitimate job choice or a dieing and low paying field?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 09:04 AM PST

Quick background is that I have found myself to hate corporate office work. I want to be on my feet. I want to use my hands. I want to interact with people face to face.

Im loosing my mind working from home or behind a cubicle in the office.

I have a bs in IT and about 8 months of helpdesk experience.

I've seriously considered jumping ship several times. Maybe a trade like electrician.

I know that there are jobs like cable techs, but the BLS has it at like a 0% job growth. Which is crazy. Will this work disappear.

    Any advice?

    CrossOverForWork CCAT and PI test

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 09:01 AM PST

Hello all, lately i have been thinking to apply in CrossOver for work. I searched for the preparation materials the other day and came across this website crossoverccat.com.

Their content looks promising and it has basically preparation courses for CCAT,PI and Personality test as well. So i opt to purchase this course which cost 79.99 USD,however,i was curious how would all the contents and test practise sessions will be made available to me so i wrote an email to admin to become clear about all my queries.

It's been already 3 days since i sent an email but i didn't hear back. So if anyone here use their resources for preparation then please help me out with my queries.

    My queries are as follows:

    1) After I purchase the course, how would all the contents and tests be provided to me? will all the contents(specifically those pdfs) be emailed to me?

    2) While paying with Stripe Checkout,we have to provide the email. what's that basically for? will all the contents be sent in this email after i purchase the course?

    3) While paying with Stripe Checkout, we have to provide the coupon code. How can I get the coupon code? is it compulsory to provide the coupon code? if i have a coupon code, will i get any discount?

    4) Once i get access to all the resources, can i share it with others or not?

    5) I live in Nepal and the international payments can't be made using credit cards of Nepal's Banks. My brother who lives in Tokyo is going to purchase it for me. Could I get access to the course if my brother purchases it for me?

    Thank you in advance everyone.

Network design or software development AAS?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 08:48 AM PST

    Hi all,

Long story short, I've been attending an Aviation Maintenance program this year but due to an injury in my wrist flaring up, my doctor is recommending I consider switching career paths to prevent a long term injury in the labor field. So, I am looking into transferring to the IT field as I enjoy troubleshooting and love the technical side of things. Plus, it would be better for me health wise.

Here's my question, my college offers a network design and administration AAS and a software development AAS. I honestly have interest in both those fields but very very little experience in either beyond a couple udemy programming classes I did for fun. Which one would you recommend for a more stable career? I have a wife and kids so providing for them in the long term is my top priority at this point.

    Thanks for the time!

Overly stressing about my new IT Help Desk job in AZ.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:07 PM PST

I just started going back to college and was fortunate enough to obtain a help desk job within the phoenix area. i just completed my first week and a half and i don't like it whatsoever. the vibe of the place is bad and people are not lively and the management seems iffy.

i'm in a desperate time that i need a job but everyday, before, during and after work i am constantly thinking of how to get out of this place and like i said, been there for only 2 weeks.

i'm not going to school to be able to work in help desk, the it degree will actually take a solid 2 years and a little more and i think i wanted to be in the position to work in IT that i rushed this and it hurt me in the end.

can anyone give me help or pointers? anyone in az that can help me out somehow?

Fresh graduate with Masters in CS not able to find a job, need advice and perspective.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:28 PM PST

I graduated this year in May after pursuing my masters in computer science from a university. It's been more than 5 months since I've graduated and still I haven't been able to find a job in my field. I have started working full time at a popular food chain to handle my monthly expenses and bills for the time being. I really want to start working in IT and really haven't been able to get that first entry level opportunity.

To give you a brief background, I pursued my bachelors in information technology and soon after finishing that pursued my masters in CS. I had always been the closest to technology in terms of the field of my interest. During my bachelors mostly my sole focus was on getting good grades enough to get my admit in a university for my masters. During my bachelors I interned with a government contractor that handled cyber security solutions and worked on the threat of Return oriented programming in Linux systems . It definitely built my interest in infosec but I never really explored it further after that. Towards the end of my bachelors I also part time worked as a technical writer for a startup where I wrote common articles such as android , e-commerce etc. I never really liked coding so I chose to focus on things like networking, infosec etc. Development was something I never really saw myself doing .

Soon after my bachelors finished I started preparing to leave my home country for abroad . Got my masters in May with a 3.78 GPA. But to be very honest , I feel it wasn't very hard to get that Gpa since a lot of my batchmates had similar Gpa. During my masters I took up various courses such as networking, computer vision, cloud computing. I did my major project in computer vision where I got someone's code and created a running license plate recognition system, gave credit to the guy who gave me his code but did it only to get that good grade.

I really like networking and consider it as my only strength in the field if IT. I've been trying to get entry level positions related to the field of networking, information security or cloud computing but again I don't have any professional experience for these entry level jobs. The entry level jobs in areas of my interest are minuscule. I don't want to become a developer. One thing to supplement or sell myself better would be to get certifications. Recently I got my AWS cloud practitioner certification which is a very basic level cloud certification but a good start for me. Have already booked for solutions architect associate after two months. I haven't been getting any call backs out responses from companies.

As someone with only formal education and no hands on practical experience jobs in networking cloud computing or infosec , getting an entry level job seems impossible. With Covid, the job market is already saturated. My first job will probably shape my career in IT so it will be a big event in my life since I haven't had any formal experience in any field so far in IT. With little bit of exposure to lots of fields and no specific field which I can consider my speciality, finding a job has been confusing and hard. I look around and see people doing so much more than me and it discourages me that I know nothing in comparison to them . I can't change my career since I've already invested 6 years in education in IT. Would really appreciate if someone can guide me or give me perspective! What am I missing? I want to start a career in IT. Five months and counting, still no job.

Getting into Product Management in tech without learning to code

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:40 PM PST

Howdyyyy folks, I'm Helen, and I'm doing an IG takeover today (Monday, November 2nd) on the University of Waterloo alumni account: https://www.instagram.com/uwaterlooalumni/

I'll be chatting about working at Microsoft as a Product Manager (vs a Program Manager), how it was different than PM-ing at Zynga, and most importantly, how I even landed in the role as an earth science major who can't code.

I'll also talk about imposter syndrome, and maintaining balance during covid times while working on https://www.joincolab.io/, where I'm helping aspiring PMs, developers, and designers break into the industry with practical and collaborative product experience.

It might be helpful to tune in if you're someone who is looking to break into tech from a non-traditional background, or a student who is struggling to land the exact internship you want... Or just come hear about how I completely failed my first ever tech interview at Riot Games.

I'll try to be on all day and you can AMA about internships, learnings during college, my job now, etc, etc ~ hope to see you there!

When is it appropriate to throw your hat in the ring for a role when you know you lack the experience.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 08:56 PM PST

I saw an job for a IT Operations management for a global company that I would love to work for. I looked the job description and I have knowledge and experience in some of the areas. But I have never done the role before.

In fact I am still doing my IT degree, and never worked in IT. My background is as a communication technician so I have a bit of knowledge in the networking and doing a cyber degree atm. I do have project management cert and experience with managing small teams.

I know I don't really stand a chance but it's for a gaming company that I currently live and breathe so is there any harm in throwing in a CV that will get culled first look through?

Graduated in May with an IT degree and still haven't found a job. Any advice?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 02:41 PM PST

Like the title says, I graduated in May with an IT degree and still haven't been able to find a job.

I'll be honest, I haven't applied to jobs as much these past few months as I used to because of lack of motivation. Something just hit me recently to start again and go hard to find a job because I'm sick of working at Subway. My degree is in IT from a good university. I have an internship for experience and a couple of years of manager experience. I'm wondering if anyone has advice on: what websites to apply on, cover letter advice, job title's that I should aim for, etc. Thank you all so much I greatly appreciate any advice.
