    Simple Questions - October 29, 2020

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

There is no future-proof, stop overspending on stuff you don't need

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 02:21 AM PDT

There is no component today that will provide "future-proofing" to your PC.

No component in today's market will be of any relevance 5 years from now, safe the graphics card that might maybe be on par with low-end cards from 5 years in the future.

Build a PC with components that satisfy your current needs, and be open to upgrades down the road. That's the good part about having a custom build: you can upgrade it as you go, and only spend for the single hardware piece you need an upgrade for

edit: yeah it's cool that the PC you built 5 years ago for 2500$ is "still great" because it runs like 800$ machines with current hardware.

You could've built the PC you needed back then, and have enough money left to build a new one today, or you could've used that money to gradually upgrade pieces and have an up-to-date machine, that's my point

    I think I’m giving up trying to get a 30 series card. What’s a good 1440p 144hz alternative I can buy NOW?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:39 AM PDT

I'm just so disillusioned by these two launches. Tried everything to get either a 3080 or 3070 but completely struck out. I have this monitor here that's pretty much useless because I only have a GTX 960. Anybody have any tips or thoughts?

I’m more interested in pc hardware and building rather than playing them

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:42 AM PDT

When I first got my gaming laptop with a 4720hq and a 965m, I was happy to be able to play games I once couldn't on my crappy 2nd gen mobile I5. Eventually I was interested in seeing what that laptop can run rather than playing games I'm interested in.

2 years down the line I built my first desktop and I was still interested more about the hardware than the games I could play. Yes I still play games because I wanna play them. But for the most part I spend most of my time being in tune with hardware news and discussion rather than actually using the hardware.

I can't be the only one who feels this way.

    Recommended GPU (not 3070, 80, 90)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 06:48 AM PDT

So since I'm not a bot, I was not able to get a 3070 card this morning. What would be the best card for a new build in the same price range? RTX 2070 Super? RX 5600 XT? What are your thoughts?

MSI B550 Gamimg Edge WiFi vs B550 Aorus Elite

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 07:15 AM PDT

So I am going to build new PC with 5900X and now I am stuck which mobo should I go with ... I went through some reviews and they all said that both mobos has very good VRMs so it comes to features.

My Phanteks Evolv X has front USB type C so I lean more towards the MSI. On the other hand the Aorus Elite is 25€ cheaper and has more USB ports (160€ for the MSI and 135€ for the Gigabyte). However I had very bad experience with MSI in the past.

How MSI is doing nowadays? How reliable are they?

Bought a cheap 2080ti on ebay for €360 from a guy with good reviews

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 02:39 PM PDT

    Hi,

So I bought a 2080ti from a guy with good reviews on his profile for €360 ($560 cad), in my opinion this is a price that makes sense for an used card given the new gpus coming out, but obviously the prices haven't dropped this low across the board yet. If this guy ends up being a scammer, can I get my money back from ebay easily? I used Paypal. It says it is coming from Germany.

    Thanks!

Computer shut down suddenly and won't turn back on

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 02:33 PM PDT

So yesterday my pc suddenly shut down out of the blue and wouldn't turn back on, no led turning on, nothing.

I did some research online and i was pretty confident the problem was my PSU(i did the test where you short the green wire of the 24 pin connector with a black one and the PSU wouldn't turn on), so i orderded a new one. This one arrived today, however my pc still won't boot.

When i tested my old PSU the first time it was still connected to the GPU, the CPU and one HDD. So today i did some testing where it wasn't connected to anything and found that the psu now did turn on.

After doing some more testing i found that when it was connected to everything but the CPU it would turn on for a few seconds and then turn off again(presumably because no CPU means that the pc can't boot so it turns off again?). When i connected it to CPU as well the PSU didn't turn on.

So right now it looks like either the motherboard or the CPU is the culprit, does anybody have any advice on how to further figure out which of these it could be?

    Thanks in advance!

Any point leaving my Quadro P620 in my build when I just bought a GTX 1660 Ti?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 03:45 PM PDT

Title pretty much says it all. I but a new Ryzen build together a few weeks ago and I had to waited a bit until I could find a deal on a graphics card upgrade. I have a Quadro P620 that has been in the machine providing basic functionality since. Note that the P620 is pretty measly 2GB DDR5 workstation card. My research on dual GPUs indicates there's not a lot to gain from this kind particular kind of mixed setup (Any PhysX benefits would likely be limited and SLI probably wouldn't work nor would there be any performance gains).

I plan on keeping the card for now, I doubt it will sell for much on the local used market and I don't want to bother with selling it through eBay. Having an extra card around will be useful in case the 1660 fails as there is no integrated graphics with my CPU.

Anyone have any interesting insights or use-cases (other than crypto-mining) as to why I might want to leave in my build?

Recommended GPU for 1080p 75hz monitor

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:02 AM PDT

Hello guys, currently I have 5 years PC with i5-4690 and MSI GTX 970. I planned to build one for this year, like on late November or early December, with Ryzen 5 5600x CPU. But for GPU part, I'm kinda disappointed because until now, there's no GPU option that has pricing below $500, and of course RTX 3070 or RX 6800 seems overkill for 1080p monitor.

So the question is, should I build the PC and slap it with the GTX 970 and wait for the rumored RTX 3060Ti, or buy the previous one like I don't know, 2060 super?

What do you think about rtx 3070 vs Radeon 6800, rtx 3080 vs Radeon 6800xt, rtx 3090 vs radeon 6900xt? Price, performance based on what you see on release date?

Wanted to thank the folks here for the generous help with my first-time build. The performance is exceeding my expectations and I'm thrilled with the PC I got for my $1K budget. Thanks so much to the sub.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:41 AM PDT

I'm caught back in the /r/patientgamers camp, so I wanted a PC that could handle games from ~2017 and earlier at max settings. I do some painting in Photoshop so I know I could add as much RAM as I want and PS will use it happily, but for the time being I went with the gaming-recommended 16GB and will add more if it becomes needed.

In case it's useful for anyone else, these are the titles I wanted to be sure I could run. I expected to run these at 1080p 144hz. I've been delighted to find that so far everything is running on max at 1440p 144hz at 60fps and above.

    • Rise of the Tomb Raider
    • Doom 2016
    • GTAV
    • Dark Souls 3
    • Yakuza 0
    • Subnautica
    • Hellblade

and earlier titles like Sleeping Dogs, GTA4, Elite and AC: Black Flag.

For someone who's been gaming on a GTX 680MX since 2013, being able to play these titles at high quality has actually been a little emotional. I've sunk a couple hundred hours into Subnautica at 1080p on Medium with like 30fps and below, so watching it light up at full resolution on high and experiencing 70+fps across the whole map nearly got me teary.

So gratitude to everyone here who helped a first-time builder put together a parts list. Here it is:

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor $179.99 @ Microcenter
Motherboard MSI B450 Gaming Plus MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard $84.99 @ Microcenter
    Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory $57.99 @ Microcenter
Storage Crucial P1 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive $99.99 @ Microcenter
Storage Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive $54.86 @ Amazon
Video Card Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB Founders Edition Video Card $209.97 @ eBay
Case Phanteks Eclipse P300A Mesh ATX Mid Tower Case $59.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply EVGA BR 600 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply $62.99 @ Amazon
    Wireless Network Adapter TP-Link Archer T4E PCIe x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter $29.99 @ Amazon
    Case Fan upHere B12CM4 50.9 CFM 140 mm Fans 3-Pack $16.98 @ Amazon
Keyboard Tecware Phantom 87 Outemu Brown Switches $42.31 @ Amazon
Controller Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller $49.00 @ Amazon
Displayport Cable iVANKY Displayport 1.4 Cable 6.6ft $18.99 @ Amazon
    Total (before mail-in rebates) $968.05

I'm using a Dell S2719DGF that I already owned, which has Freesync support but requires that DP cable for 144hz. Otherwise everything is working great so far, and so I just wanted to share the build and express my thanks.

    Cheers!

Tried building a PC for my birthday. I failed miserably.

    Posted: 28 Oct 2020 11:00 PM PDT

I attempted to build a pc, I had gotten these parts for my birthday and was very excited to build and play on pc. My parts were

    Evega Gtx 1050

    A320m pro max motherboard

    Corsair vengeance 16gb ram

    Aresgame power supply

    Sama-3d case

    Amd ryzen 5 2400g

    2tb HDD

The power supply I now believe was defective. I had a spare power supply I hooked up and I know works as the fan built into it spins however the motherboard, cpu cooler and rgb ram can't get any power from it when connected I think this means that my motherboard is defective as well.

Also just wondering is there anything that could be preventing my stuff from working properly? I am very new to the world of PCs and any help would be much appreciated.

    (EDIT)

A big thanks to everybody who commented! Using everybody's tips I was able to fix it! It was really nice to wake up this morning seeing how everybody was trying to help! And if somebody is reading this who wants to build a pc don't be afraid to do what I did and ask for help! If I hadn't I'd still be at square one! So THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE!!

Hello friends. Building a pc centered around a 3070, would appreciate some help

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 09:05 AM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6wVmgt

This is what I have so far. The monitor is actually already purchased and is 1080p 165z, not 144. I was also lucky enough to get a 3070 from bestbuy this morning. Planning on a future proof 1080p primarily gaming rig for max/ultra settings on AAA games 60-144fps. Very new to this, and would appreciate if someone could look over what I have so far and tell me if it'd work/if they might have any suggestions.

Biggest question is if everything will fit with that case, and if the ram speed is adequate for the 3600. I know 5600x comes out the 5th, but it's $100 more and I've waited long enough. Trying to get a month or two of gaming in before the world ends.

I'd like to get everything on Amazon since I get 5% cash back with my card, but if there are deals on other websites would definitely consider them. Thanks for the help!
