[AUS <1000AUD] Looking for a laptop to replace my Aspire E15

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 01:46 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:*\*

    <1000AUD

    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?*\*

    No

    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?*\*

Probably Battery life --> performance --> build quality

    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?*\*

Not important if I hit all the specs I need/want

    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.*\*

No, maybe ~15inch or so would be good for movies/videos

    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.*\*

Only the occasional social gaming with friends (games not decided by me) but its nothing too heavy

    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?*\*

    No

    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*\*

Webcam, backlit keyboard, reliable build quality, high quality display, SSD

    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.*\*

I currently use the Acer Aspire E15 (also suggested by a user here long time ago), pretty good laptop have had no issues except the make of it is all plastic and it's literally falling apart now.

I use it for work and general use so I need something with a long battery life, good screen and webcam with it. I also multitask quite a bit so a processor(..?) that can handle that would be great. Would be good if it is able to handle all the stress of bringing it to and from work, opening and closing the lid + minor hits/falls along the way

Specs these days just sound so foreign to me I don't really know what they mean or if they're any good. So I'm hoping you could leave a few suggestions +/- small summary or pro/cons list for me to pick from. Not too picky with the price (if its worth it in the long run) but I might not splurge in this economy :)

Am considering https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/yoga/yoga-s-series/Yoga-Slim-7-14ARE05/p/88YGS701397 is this any good?

    This or that

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 01:45 AM PDT

    Hey guys

I hope you can help me narrow it even more down than I already have. I'm currently looking for a new laptop, which I also need to use for some coding. I'm starting computer science next year but I'm already taking courses to prepare up. I'm taking courses in python, c# and java currently.

Games Usually play is WoW, Warzone, Fortnite etc. But also less unknown titles

I have been looking at these two laptops and can't decide which one to go with. Price is almost similar to each other. I just need something I can travel with me. I also have a pc I can use for a lot of heavier stuff when needed.

Since it's a laptop I know there will be some heat issues. I'm also gonna use a cooling pad if needed.

Thanks in advance and sorry for bad English :)

    Laptop 1.

    Asus Rog Zephyrus G14 14" Ryzen 5 16GB ram 512 SSD GTX1650TI Screen 120 HZ

    Laptop 2.

    Lenovo Legion 5 15,6" Intel core I5 16GB ram 512 SSD RTX2060 Screen 144 HZ

Looking for a laptop that works well for gaming and music production, budget is around 5.500 DKK (purchasing in Denmark)

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 01:30 AM PDT

    • Total budget Purchasing in Denmark. I would prefer to keep my budget around 5.000 (670€), but I'm willing to push it to 6.000 (800€) if the laptop is worth the splurge.

    • Open to refurbs/used? Sure.

    • Priorities? I'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to computers, but I'd say performance is my #1 priority, and I don't mind quite as much when it comes to battery life as I'll mostly be using it at home.

    • How important is weight and thinness? Not very. Of course it wouldn't be a downside if the laptop isn't overly clunky to carry around, but as I mentioned above, I will be using it at home the majority of the time.

    • Preferred screen size? N/A.

    • Which programs/games will I be running on the laptop? FL Studio 20, and I would like to have the ability to try out other DAWs in the future without too much lag. I use photoshop CC every now and then, usually for pretty small projects. For games, I mostly play minecraft, sims 4, stardew valley and world of warcraft. I would really like to be able to run minecraft with shaders smoothly, which I wasn't able to on my previous laptop (macbook pro 13"), so that's a priority.

    • Settings and FPS of the games I want to run? As mentioned, minecraft with shaders being able to run smoothly is a priority. Otherwise, I'm not too nitpicky when it comes to fps etc.

    • Specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices? Definitely want to have an optical drive, but otherwise I don't really mind. Having a good keyboard would be really nice for gaming, though.

    • Any finishing thoughts? Nope!

Thank you all in advance, I'm very excited to upgrade to a better laptop that suits my needs better!

Which 17.3" laptop with a good screen and numpad?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 01:19 AM PDT

I have a 7 year old ThinkPad w530 that I love, but it now disconnects internet randomly and I am starting online college, so that would be bad if I'm in a test.

I also can't study on it well due to the 15.6 inch, 720p screen. I need 2 PDFs up side by side. I'd even go bigger than 17 if that was common.

I'm taking Accounting, so a 10 key numpad is also important. I have eye issues so visual clarity and ease of reading is kind of critical for me too.

Budget: ~$1000-1500ish. Lower is obviously better :-)

What should I be thinking about?

    laptop for schoolwork/gaming

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 12:55 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
total budget $1600 USD, prefer something $1000-$1500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
not a fan of touchscreen/2-in-1; battery life not especially important; prefer something durable (when there isn't a pandemic, i travel a lot)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
because i travel, i'd prefer something under 5 pounds. the laptop ive been using is 6 pounds and it's a pain
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
i have a desktop where i do more "serious" gaming (it has a GTX 1060 and i'd prefer a laptop that doesn't outpace that) BUT i need a laptop capable of heavy web browsing, photoshop, unity, and some light gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
light gaming (minecraft, low-medium settings Overwatch, low-medium settings recent-ish games.) again, since i have a desktop for more recent releases, this doesn't need to be a massive powerhouse (and i don't care about FPS provided the game isn't visually stuttering) -- but i do want it to be capable of *some* gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
good trackpad/keyboard is a must (i don't use a mouse with my laptop). numpad is nice but not 100% necessary. webcam/built in mic is important. i do not like touchscreens.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
prefer something with 1+ TB storage. i purchased the ASUS TUF because of its good reviews, but am sending it back because of audio quality problems (through earbuds!), loud fan, not enough storage space, and a few other quirks.

i know this is quite a bit! ive gotten lost reading reviews. thank you :)

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 04:01 AM PDT

Can you help me find something suitable?

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      ~900 euros, Spain.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Totally! As cheap as possible while it meets my needs.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Good performance, preferably Ryzen 4800u or better.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Unimportant
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Big screen will be appreciated, a 17" display.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Nothing heavy, don't worry!
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      CS:GO if possible ;)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I love to have many workspaces open eating all of my ram. So it needs to have 16GB and be capable of holding 32gb for the future. I can survive with the Vega integrated graphics. SSD a must, preferably capable of holding two drives.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Something cheap that gets the job done. No need for graphic card.

    Thanks for reading!

Looking for a good gaming laptop. Around $800

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 12:13 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: anything above $1000 is too much for now. Around $800 is the sweet spot.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? no would like a brand new one.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance is the main thing. Just looking for something that can run well and have huge frame drops like my current laptop. Try for mid-range gaming.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? don't really care
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. n/a
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. just gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? well the game or games is the halo ones. The master chief collection is really something I want to play. As long as it runs fine, I'm good.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?definitely reliable build quality and a good keyboard.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I think everything here just about covers it. I want to play more games on my laptop and now I actually have a chance at it. Ask me for anymore details that are needed, but other than that thank you in advance. Forgot this important detail, I think I can push just a little on some laptops are $1000. Just a little though.

Laptop for working and everyday life

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 03:53 AM PDT

Hi there ! Looking for a PC that I could use for work and everyday life.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Country : France. Budget : preferably around 800€, max 1000€.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance, build quality, battery life, form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not important. I expect to be able to transport the laptop without breaking my back but it's really not the most important criterion.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15''
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Will use the laptop for sound editing (protools), photo editing (photoshop) and some CAD (fusion 360) for 3D printing. Concerning gaming, will do but no intention to play AAA games. More something like emulators, quite old 3D games, 2D games. No need to be able to run modern AAA games at 60 fps with ultra settings.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Mandatory : numpad, thunderbolt, SSD of at least 512Go. A good build quality too, the laptop will be used for working so a reliable machine is needed.
Nice to have : sufficient IO (1 or 2 USB ports, one HDMI port would be cool). Please no USB-C only laptop. A good screen would be very nice too !
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      Thanks in advance !

USD 1500 (absolute ceiling - USD 2000), based in India but can get one from the US as well. Heavy Excel use (>200 mb files, etc), browsing, business + personal and B-School Eventually

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 12:01 AM PDT

    1) Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    INR 100,000 - 150,000, India USD 1500 - 2000 (if purchased there)

    2) Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Would prefer new

    3) How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Build Quality
    2. Performance
    3. Battery Life
    4. Form Factor Aesthetics are also important to me 4) How important is weight and thinness to you?

Important. Lighter and sleeker the better. Currently use the first gen HP spectre x360 and want something in the same range of thinness and weight

    5) Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13/15

    6) Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I am primarily an MS Office user, heavily skewed towards Excel, Power BI. I use it for data analysis and the files often have over 600,000 - 700,000 rows and over 100 columns of data.

    7) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not a gamer

    8) Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Finger-print reader, good build quality, reliable trackpad. Backlit keyboard that allows me to adjust the brightness level. Indifferent to touchscreen, - My current HP has a touchscreen but I don't really have a use case for it. However, for B-school, maybe a touchscreen with a stylus setup can help with taking notes?

    9) Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am currently torn between the HP Envy and the Surface Laptop 3. I have used my current HP spectre X360 for more than 4 years now and it works really well. I accidently cracked the screen a few months back and there is a huge crack running from just above the webcam to the bottom right of the laptop next to the hinge, but the laptop AND the touch screen work perfectly well, the webcam ofc is not functional. The laptop still works beautifully in most cases other than heavy excel use. So, I am convinced that the HP envy will not be a bad bet but the build quality and general aesthetics of the Surface Laptop are tempting, however, I have not heard/read good things about the Surface, in terms of funcat, especially considering the price. Thank you all in advance!

Looking for not too high-end all round laptop, around 800 EU.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 03:42 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase:
      Around 800 euros, the Netherlands
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Preferably not
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Battery life and build quality is important. Also it needs to be powerful enough for working, i.e. running a lot of internet tabs, office documents and 2-3 remote desktops. Will be using it primarliy for rather simple work stuff like word processing, but as is said also working remotely on my work desktop. Also will be used for a lot of video streaming.

Not very. As long as its not extremely bulky.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Prefer larger over smaller screens, although this is no hard demand.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      No, GPU not very important.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Needs to have light in keyboard, regular HDMI, multiple USB ports. Preferably also ability to open with one hand and decent keyboard/touchpad.

    • If I can do all of the above with a cheaper laptop, all the better :)

    Surface Laptop 3 13.5, i7, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd V Surface Laptop 3 15", Ryzen 5, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd

    Posted: 04 Oct 2020 03:42 AM PDT

Hi, so I already bought a Surface Laptop 3 15", Ryzen 5, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd model last week, but I'm usually using it through my monitor anyway. And those two products are in the same price range because I can get a student discount in the UK.

Would you guys recommend me to return the 15" product and get the 13.5" i7 version instead as it's got superior hardware inside?

    Thank you in advance!

Quick last minute decision acer nitro 5 or tuf 15

    Posted: 03 Oct 2020 11:48 PM PDT

Hey guys I finally decided to pull the plug on a laptop to replace my older lenovo all in one. I've narrowed it down to either the tuf 15 or nitro 5, here's the specs of each:

    Tuf 15

    Ryzen 7 4800H 8Core 4.2GHz + 7GPU cores Nvidia GTX 1650 4GB 16GB DDR4 Ram 15.6" 144hz, 1080p, Anti-Glare Display 512GB NVMe SSD

    Nitro 5

    10th Generation Intel Core i5-10300H P NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM 15.6" Full HD Widescreen LED-backlit IPS Display (1920 x 1080 resolution; 120Hz Refresh Rate, 16:9 aspect ratio) 8GB DDR4 2933MHz Memory & 512GB NVMe SSD

I found these new in box in my local listings and I managed to get the sellers down to $800 (cad) for the nitro 5 and $900 (cad) for the tuf 15

Here's my main usage: mostly web browsing, forex trading (mt4 lots of custom indicators) music production on fl studio, occasional video editing on davinci resolve, photo editing, little to no gaming, watching movies. The laptop will be docked 80% of the time and I will be connecting it to my 26" lenovo all in one display, max res is 2560 x 1440 60hz but I will probably changer to a better monitor down the line. Now before you ask why don't I just get a pc? because I like the freedom of being able to take it from the dock and around the house/on trips. I do understand that they're both shitty displays so not super worried about color accuracy although brightness could play a role. I like the look of the tuf 15 a lot more than the nitro but I like the rear ac connector on the nitro. Battery seems a lot better on the tuf but apparently the thermals aren't great. I'm mostly concerned about performance and I will need either one to last me 3-5 years. I will be adding 32gb ram and 1tb nvme down the line. I'm pretty limited to other options because I prefer to buy on classifieds to get a better deal, however if you have a recommendation or you think I'm looking in the wrong place foor what my needs are please let me know

ps: I may also be able yo get a rog strix g15 with virtually the same specs as the nitro 5 for the same price or an older helios 300

    1. **LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**
    2. * **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**
    3. $600 usd
    4. * **Are you open to refurbs/used?**
    5. No
    6. * **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**
    7. I want a 15.6 screen or bigger and numpad. Otherwise don't care about form factor. I want good build quality and I want a 4 core cpu. I want good battery life.
    8. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**
    9. Don't care that much
    10. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**
    11. 15.6 inches
    12. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**
    13. No gaming, web browsing, banking, documents, zoom and maybe photo editing

    15. N/A
    16. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**
    17. Good keyboard and good build quality. Trackpad doesn't matter as my mom uses a mouse
    18. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**
    19. I put $600 but if you find something that meets criteria for like $400 I would take that. I just put $600 as I think that's a little bit more than what I would want would cost. Try to get cheapest thing that meets criteria.

Quiet Laptop for CPU tasks only

    Posted: 03 Oct 2020 07:15 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm looking for a quiet laptop that can handle my workflow yet stays reasonably quiet, where should I look ? I only need CPU performance, GPU is not needed.

For comparison I currently have 2core/4thread 3th gen i5 3230M CPU and I have all threads on 50% load and it's running on 2.9ghz this is my current workflow that I maintains for couple hours/day.

I also want to run some a little more demanding cpu tasks but when I do on this machine it's going to be too laggy to work with.

I'm looking for something that can handle cpu load for multiple hours/day yet stays reasonably quiet. Id hate it when it be more loud than my current laptop which is quite quiet when I had the change to test a new gaming laptop (HP Omen 2020 AMD) that one was louder where It would annoy me

Any suggestions are welcome thank you and have a good day!

Weight and stuff is not much of a issue 14-15" will be perfectly fine. My budget is around 1000-1500

    Linux workhorse, US/EU, 4000USD

    Posted: 03 Oct 2020 01:27 PM PDT

    Must have:

    • Works with linux (at least to some acceptable degree)
    • Screen size: 14"-16"
    • 32 G RAM with option to upgrade to 64
    • Video card that is future proof (at least 4K 60fps, I'm not really an expert on this topic)
    • CPU should be in the "value" range of the high-end, (ie. not THE best, but in the top 20%)
    • Servicable: add RAM, replace HDD/SSD, replace CPU cooler if necessary, etc.
    • Warranty of 3 years with option to prolong
    • Good ventillation, able to work for a prolonged period without extreme fan noise and/or CPU throttling
    • Some kind of a docking station solution for connecting external display, keyboard, mouse, HDD at once (not sure exactly how this works nowadays, via USB-C?)

    Nice to have:

    • Keyboard with good feel (Along the lines of ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, etc.)
    • 2.5 HDD bay inside
    • A display that can be viewed in sun glare (either matte or shiny with high brightness)
    • Hardware volume buttons (at least mute)
    • No numpad, so keyboard is centered
    • Some ruggedness (at the level of a Thinkpad or Dell Latitude)

May be also interested in one with 17" screen size if really needed :/

    Razer Blade 15 Advanced - RTX2070

    Posted: 03 Oct 2020 09:25 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

Im searching for my first gaming laptop! Worth mentioning that I'm based in Australia!

Currently I've got my eye out for the Razer Blade 15 Advanced 15"6 with the 300HZ panel, i7-10875H 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB storage and NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super MAX-Q.

Link to the laptop is as per below.

    https://www.mwave.com.au/product/razer-blade-15-advanced-156-300hz-gaming-laptop-i710875h-16gb-512gb-rtx2070s-ac35508

Is this a good buy? The price has went down from AUD4,499 to AUD3,499. Always wanted to get a Razer Blade but didn't want to pay for anything above AUD4,000.

I know most people will suggest getting a Small Form Factor desktop but I would prefer being able to travel and game without the hassle of bringing an external monitor everywhere I travel to.

I'll be mainly using the laptop for Triple-A gaming, video editing and in the future using softwares for designing products for manufacturing.

I'm also considering the MSI GE66 and MSI GS66 but the latter seems to be tad bit pricier.

Would love to hear from you guys about alternatives that might offer better thermal management!

Please don't crucify me, as I'm posting this via mobile and am still new to computers/laptops!
