Need a cheap laptop that has thunderbolt for eGPU, full size keyboard, decent speakers, and glossy IPS display.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 09:56 PM PDT

A little over a year ago I bought a used HP Probook 650 G1 that had 500GB SSD and 8GB ram for $200, upgraded the display to a glossy IPS display with 1920x1080 resolution, upgraded to a 8550mAh battery, upgraded the cooling system with a HP Elitebook 8460p heatsink and fan(Dremel was required), upgraded the processor to a Intel I7-4712MQ, upgraded the keyboard with a backlit one form a probook(slicing and soldering was required), and installed a 1TB SSD in the CD drive.

Other than the speakers being really crappy, it has been working great for me so far, however, I really wish I could play video games on it. I use Shadow on it which allows me to play single player games but the latency is too much for multiplayer games like CSGO or Rust which is what I mainly play. Additionally, I would really only play games when I am plugged into my monitors and peripherals so I am completely uninterested in having a powerful GPU inside the laptop. What makes the most sense to me is an eGPU but the only way to do that with a Probook 650 G1 appears to be removing the wifi module which completely voids the point of a laptop in my opinion.

If I could find a laptop with similar spec to my current laptop(a slightly more powerful processor would be nice though) but with a thunderbolt connector, that would be the holy grail of laptops for me. Obviously, I don't expect to get one like this for as little as I plaid for my current laptop but around $500 would be more than doable. Does anyone have a suggestion for laptop like this? Or maybe some hack I can do to attach/detach an eGPU easily while still having wifi when disconnected?

One for me and one for the wife.

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 01:13 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm in the market for two laptops for me and the wifey. I've done some rudimentary research, but would love a nice person to point me in the right direction since it's been 3+ years since I've rebuilt my PC and nearly a decade since my last laptop purchase. As such, I'm not sure what performance expectations are with a given CPU/GPU, so I'll leave that to your collective knowledge.

    We'll start with the wife:

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

US - Cap around $750, but if performance is acceptable at even $500, I'd jump on that. Potentially willing to go higher if absolutely necessary, but I'd much prefer lower if possible.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    New, please.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

100% need a 2-in-1/convertible with a touchscreen and in 1080p. Battery life and performance are also key, and I'd like something that's attractive to look at. I want my wife to be proud to show off her laptop.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Basically negligible. I don't want anything super huge or super heavy, but it's not a huge deal if it's a bit heavy.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

At least 14 inches, max 15.6. Probably leaning towards the 14 for the sleek/sexy factor and overall portability for the lady.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No, no, no and no. However, I want something that's reasonably quick and doesn't feel sluggish, especially for browsing and multi-tasking. Also, I'd love a dedicated GPU since my wife will occasionally hook it up to our TV to stream movies on the bigger screen.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I want it be a quality device. Flimsy isn't necessarily a negative so long as it's not fragile. A good touchpad is probably most important. Also, as stated previously, touch screen/2-in-1 are absolute requirements.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

We were at Best Buy today kinda browsing around and my wife really liked the look of the black/gold trim on the HP Spectre laptops. It's a good looking laptop. Something she'd like to show off. It's kinda banal, but I want her to enjoy the look and feel of the laptop every time she uses it. A shitty laptop will get left to gather dust. If possible, find her something sexy.

    -------------------------------------------------

    Now, onto mine:

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1000 USD as a max. I'd prefer something a bit cheaper since I figure I don't need as much power as $1000 would get me, but we'll see.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    New, please.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, build quality, battery life. While I don't intend to spend a great deal of time on the battery, having a decent lifespan would be nice. I had an old Lenovo y500 that had like a 140 minute lifespan on the battery and was really disappointed. Granted, that was a beast of a laptop, but still.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Lifting heavy shit and putting it back down doesn't bother me. It's not a factor.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I like bigger screens, but I know that 17's have become somewhat price restrictive. I think I'm willing to settle for a 15.6. I'd be okay with a 17 if the price and overall size wasn't massive because of that.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming. If I'm not gaming, I'm on YouTube or Twitch or something far less intensive.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't really play any "recent" games, so we'll set a benchmark at Shadowlands or whatever the new WoW release is. I also casually play Rocket League, Skyrim and No Mans Sky, I'd love to see some great visuals on the latter. Otherwise, it's all about high fps in anything competitive. A bit of future proofing couldn't hurt, but I'm not sure it's really necessary.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard. I know the concept of mechanical keyboards is still lost on most laptop makers, but I HATE laptop keyboards. They're difficult to type on coming from even a shitty Chinese mx knockoff. I'd also like a good build quality, and something that wont wake the neighbors when under stress (and ESPECIALLY when not under stress), and something that doesn't get unnecessarily hot. My Y500 had the dual-GPU option, and one of those GPU's I don't think came with a fan, so the fucking thing could heat my house. Otherwise, aesthetic isn't a huge deal to me. Backlit keyboards, all those bells and whistles designed to add costs for the "gamer" feel can eat a dick. My fingers can find keys in the dark. It's a plus, but it's not necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I sincerely doubt I need to spend anywhere near even $900 for the build I need, and that's fine. My goal isn't to push my budget, but to meet my needs. If you can find something for me that costs $600, tell me. I'll likely end up having to grab a few accessories for both me and my wife, so coming in under budget allows me to get us some other goodies to go with it without adding to my expected costs.

Thank you guys so much for what you do for the laptop community. I used this community a decade ago to get my first laptop, and I wasn't misled. Ya'll are awesome, keep being awesome.

Graphic design student in need of a good laptop for grzphic work with a bit of gaming in between. €1200, The Netherlands.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 12:33 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    -fill here, remove dashes-

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

The netherlands. Can also order from Germany/Belgium probably so that's an option. Ideally €1200, can be a bit more but I'd rather not, if it's a reaaally nice one might go up to €1400 but that's the absolute max. Are you open to refurbs/used? No, perhaps a refurbished macbook but I'm not sure.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance first! Then battery, then build quality. Really needs to run the Adobe suite smoothly.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't want to go above 2 kg (about 4.5lbs I think) has to be portable for school.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 or 14 inch, preferably 14 but 13 is fine. I'd like a 15inch but the battery life would perhaps be shorter/weigh more.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use the adobe suite daily. Photoshop, illustrator and lightroom. I dabble in video editing so it has to be doable, but can be a bit slower. I game a bit but mostly older games as my laptop is quite old (skyrim, fallout 3/nv, guild wars 2, the witcher) would love to be able to play witcher 2, 3 I would take on the lowest settings even.(if possible)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-I.m okay with 40fps at high settings. Currently it's usually 30fps at medium settings so any better than that is welcome. But mostly I play single player rpgs so doesn't have to be too fast.

I would like a dedicated gpu, I've seen some laptops with the Nvidia GeForce mx350 that might be good? Not sure how I feel about Intel/iris incorporated graphics. I've heard the vega radeon one's are maybe better? All input welcome.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-I do lots of graphic work so a nice screen with at least 300 nits is necessary I think?. I'd prefer a glossy ish screen with anti-glare. So not completely glossy but also not very matte. Is that a thing?my eyesight is quite bad and I think a full on glossy screen would be quite irritating when looking at it for 6+ hours which I do regularly. Any input on this is welcome.

Good RGB coverage is important as well.

Headphone jack is a must. I don't like wireless earbuds/headphones and don't plan on getting any. I can deal with a usb hub/dongle thingy for hdmi/usb if need be, but would really prefer a headphone jack unless the laptop is 100% amazing in all other aspects.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-a nice 13/14 inch laptop with a good screen (that isn't too glossy) for graphic work. Needs to run lightroom smoothly. A bit of gaming would be nice, with maybe a dedicated gpu. Portable with a good battery life. I'm not sure if this is all possible so any help is appreciated!

I've looked at: acer swift 3/5, Lenovo ideapad s540, Asus zenbook, huawei matebook, a refurbished MacBook

Help me pick! Or suggest something else.

Can you guys help me find a durable premium 13-14" laptop ($1500-$2000 USD)?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 03:57 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm looking for a new laptop and I can't really decide on which one to get. I'm interested in the new XPS 13 or the Spectre x360 14 but I've seen a lot of people complain about those laptops.

For context, I'm a college student and I occasionally do some photo/video editing (Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere). The specs that I would like are an i7, 16GB RAM and a 512 to 1TB SSD.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1500 to $2000 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Nope
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
An ultrabook is a must (no need for it to be a 2-in-1), build quality close second, performance also high up there as well as a long lasting laptop (3-5 years). A battery life of at least 7 hours would be nice so no need for a 4K screen resolution.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Kind of important as I might need to travel around with it.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13" min - 14" max
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Some editing using Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere. Won't be playing any games though.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      none, N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Colorful & bright screen, good keyboard, backlit keyboard, precision gestures trackpad, a USB A port would be nice but I can use a dock on a full USB-C laptop, reliable build quality
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      i7 (10th or 11th gen), 16GB RAM, 500GB - 1TB SSD

    Thank you so much!

Ultrabook is fine (if it's within the budget), build quality, performance, battery life should be good. I don't need 2-in-1.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

As thin and as lightweight the budget can get.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Small screen - 11in?

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No programs.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Build quality should be good, obviously a good keyboard and a good touch pad. Oh and a good camera.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Idk much about laptops (I own a MacBook) but my dad wants a laptop which does bare minimum things with ease. Is the processor responsible for the speed of laptop?- if yes then a good enough processor for- taking online classes, browsing, watching movies (wants a high def screen), reads the pen drives faster? (Again, idk much about laptops), 1 TB storage etc.

Any help with a link to the product is appreciated. Thanks!

    [$2500] Very reliable gaming laptop, ultra/high 1440p 60fps

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 01:34 AM PDT

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase:

      $2500, USA

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality, performance, form factor, battery life

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      17", 15" is fine too!

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use Photoshop for quick photo resizes, Illustrator very rarely. I need to be able to have VS Code, a browser, and sometimes Photoshop open all at once. I game as well.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The most intensive game I play (I think) is Monster Hunter: World, followed by AC: Odyssey and Witcher 3. I don't play any esport games or anything competitive. Ideally ultra settings, 60FPS at 1440p (using an external monitor, not the laptop display).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

32GB RAM, 1 TB SSD preferred. Reliability and good customer support is the #1 most important thing to me.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've used and had issues with Lenovo, the Maingear Element 3, MSI GE66, and Alienware. The GE66 has been perfect beside severe overheating and having its warranty via Best Buy's Geek Squad (1-2 month repair times). Alienware was the worst experience of the bunch, I should've listened to the people on the Discord who told me to avoid them.

Any help would be appreciated - I know a desktop suits my needs most, but I can't travel with one.

Trynna get the best budget gaming laptop for $500-$600

I've been trying to find a decent budget laptop for gaming that is under $600. I wouldn't mind having to buy one then maybe have to put more RAM in it. I'm not too sure how much you could upgrade in a laptop but I know it is incredibly limited to only a couple things. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $500-$600

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    N/A

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I plan to be more portable and on the go but it really doesn't matter

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Definitely Gaming/Some Video editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Don't care to go all out and play all the new games max setting. Just something decent that'll get me 60+fps on medium settings for most newer games if possible.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      N/A

    Moderate Gaming/School laptop

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:12 PM PDT

Looking for a laptop preferably under $700 but i could go up to $1000 for something that I like. Wanting at least a i5/ryzen 5 processor and a gpu, 8+ gb of ram, and at least 256+ gb ssd.

I'd like to be able to play rocket league 60fps at 1080p, skyrim with mods with high settings, and gta v 30-60 fps 720p

I play lighter games like smash bros on the dolphin emulator and this is mostly the game I am going to play on my laptop. Don't care about touch screen or any of that. Would like a backlit keyboard with possibility to customize the color, but none of that red or green keyboard color scheme and at least 15.6 inch screen.

Confused between lenovo ideapad s540 (i5) vs lenovo ideapad slim 5i (i5)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:06 PM PDT

The s540 has a detailed review on notebookcheck and is proven to be a good laptop while the slim 5i is newly launched and has the latest processors but I can't find a detailed reliable review yet. Please suggest what to buy between the two or if there is an even better laptop in this range please tell that about too.

Student looking for 2 in 1 laptop with stylus support under $500

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 02:16 PM PDT

I'm a student who does both coding and art.

Things I would like in a 2 in 1 laptop:

    - stylus support, especially if it comes with one

    - 6 gb ram and up

    - i5 version and up!

    - something similar to the microsoft surface pro style, i like that kind of keyboard and sturdy support holding up the screen

My budget is pretty tight so I would like to get the best 2 in 1 laptop I can out of it :)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 09:47 PM PDT

Hi so im a pretty new to laptops and was wondering since i live in Finland, what laptop would be good for me

I mostly need it for traveling/school/media and some random gaming so basicly Runescape (3 and oldschool), Stardew Valley and some games like that so little bit is needed from graphics side

Would like it to be under 900€

Would like to have good battery life/good thermals and also if possible, higher than 60hz but thats just extra

Also nice build quality is always great but thats pretty obvious

Laptop for music production, graphic design, and gaming

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 04:37 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Under $2000, preferably between $1000 and $1500 - AUD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Prefer new

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance - form factor - build quality - battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not particularly

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Music production - cubase Graphic design - illustrator, photoshop, indesign Gaming - stream, not AAA titles at full graphics though

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Some older games here and there - maybe minecraft. Graphics and FPS aren't super important here, basics are fine

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch screen wouldn't heard as, if I had the capability, I would definitely draw (with a pen, but a touch screen without doesn't hurt either). Need multiple USB ports for keyboard, amp, mouse.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've looked around a little at Asus vivobooks, Hp laptops around $1500 and MSI which was a bit expensive and apparently had build quality, haven't been sold on anything yet. Any help is much appreciated.

    Best long-term gaming/college laptop

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 11:25 AM PDT

So I'm going to finish high school this year and going to start my higher studies. And for that I want to buy a long term laptop that is good for gaming and for my classes. And the budget is important to me, I would prefer it to be under 1000. But I want it to last at least around 5-7 years. Any suggestions?
