Looking for a "screen time" alternative for Windows

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 12:17 PM PDT

    Hey all!

I use the screen time feature on my iPhone to limit my usage of certain apps. Basically, it greys it out and doesn't let you use it after using it for a certain amount of time.

I know time sense can show me daily usage, but is there anything that can limit my usage?

Windows 7 SP 1 where are you?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 12:28 PM PDT

I decided today to re-load an old Windows 7 PC using it's built in feature to do that. But the version of windows does not include SP1. And the windows update won't work at all. I expected that new fixes are not being made but did not expect there to be no trace of the ability to download Windows 7 SP1.

MS seems to have purged the internet of this update and I can't find it anywhere.

    Can I get this somewhere?

RCWM - a set of right-click menu tools for Windows for admins/power users

RCWM - a set of right-click menu tools for Windows for admins/power users

Hey guys, I wanna share with you a set of right-click tools that I've been developing. This project is open-source and it's intended to be used by Windows admins and/or power users. I've posted it yesterday to /sysadmin, and today I'd like to post it here as well. I hope that's okay.

The main features are robocopy-ing folders, moving directories (which is also robocopy) and removing directories - all of these much faster than the usual CTRL+C/CTRL+V (or right-click & copy) and 'delete'. I also find "Open CMD/Powershell window here" very useful (when right-clicking on a folder or the background).

The goal was to make these tools readily available to noobs, and to save some time to those who already know how to use all of these command-line utilities.

Other features include "Running with priority" for exe files, "Boot into safe mode", "Take Ownership" ...

If you're interested, I think it's best for you to check the readme file on github with lots of info and some nice .gif files. It's all written in batch, powershell and .reg files.

I'd be happy to hear your opinions and to have people test the tools. Take a look and remember to star the project on github if you like it!

    https://github.com/GChuf/RCWM

P.S. Perhaps the "run with priority" gets misunderstood because of jcotton's comment. I'd just like to clarify - the user can choose with which priority to run a process. There is no "default". You CAN run something with realtime priority though, if you choose to do so.
P.S.S. Apparently the feature is bugged - for those of you who cannot see the 6 sub-options (low to realtime), can you tell me which windows version you're using? Thanks

Is there a way to have a program or whatever to make downloads from certain websites to go into specific folders? It'll make downloading easier.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:45 PM PDT

So is there any way I can make some sort of a detector/sensor for my PC desktop?

So for example, I put a cursor on something, and when it changes, I get some sort of a warning... Like alarm?

Trying to hard reset a PC I was given that I don’t have the password to but I keep getting “there was an error resetting your pic” around half way in. Any ideas for next step?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:07 PM PDT

Title basically. Was given an old school computer lab PC and I'm looking to flip it, but I don't have the password. Tried the shift restart > troubleshooting > reset method but it never completes the reset without an error message. Any help is appreciated.

Windows 10/365 updates take like 14 hours and never work the first time.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 06:57 PM PDT

Windows 10/365 updates take like 14 hours and never work the first time. It's annoying. Jesus H. You Know Who can't Bill Gates throw in a few billion to make them faster? Like, "Hey I know I don't work here anymore but here's a ton of money I'm not gonna give to starving kids anyways so make the downloads faster. Thanks!"

    Advise: Local or Microsoft account?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 02:53 PM PDT

But I hate the one drive integration. ouse this weekend (One a clean setup, the second a new laptop).

    Windows 10 Pro.

My last four/five setups, I've done the Microsoft account.

I guess I like the usefulness of it syncing settings. Somewhat.

But I hate the onedrive integration.

And because I'm (relatively) uber safe about passwords, I have a randomized 20 char password along with two factor authentication. Which is a pain to put in especially the first time. Too bad I can't show a lastpass QR code to the camera.

I just want to be able to quickly login (Yah, I have the PIN settings on.)

Is there a reason that I'm a fool to make my new setups local? Or should I have been doing this all along.

It seems like the big things are:

    • Access to the microsoft store for purchases (but I think you can sign in directly)
    • Outlook/mail (not useful)
    • One drive (not sure how I feel - I don't want my desktop to propagate across systems)
    • Settings (sorta nice. I think.)
    • Family (I'm sorta angry about having to create an email for a 5 year old)
    • Cortana (which I don't use.)

So, am I cutting off my nose to despite my face? What was the key point that made you go local or not?

Windows 7 black screen with cursor, repair is not working/restore points disabled, unable to get into advanced recovery menu

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 01:33 PM PDT

When I wanted to go into advanced recovery menu It always showed me only option to repair startup or turn off the machine. I have this windows in vm and its unable to start, my host is linux. I would like to rescue some data from this .vdi file or just get the windows going so I would be able to access the files and copy them.I tried new installation of win 7 in vm and dragged and dropped the damaged vm to desktop, but its not even showing up there yet the diskspace is used.

    PC behaving really weird... (crashing)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 04:01 PM PDT

    Specs:

    • RTX 2070 Super
    • Ryzen 5 2600x
    • MSI B450-A Pro
    • 16GB ddr4 Ripjaws V CL16 3600mhz (running at xmp 1 3333mhz)
    • bequite! system power 9 600w

    Besides xmp no overclocks.

    Problem:

All my games (I mainly play Valorant) run perfectly fine but once I close the game or tab out the pc crashes. There are 2 options so far how the pc crashes, number 1 is that everything freezes for like 2-3 seconds and the recent sound is stuck in a loop (so it's like a rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound). After that the pc automatically restarts and everything seems to be fine again. Number 2 is that the screen will just go black while all the rgb is still on and the fans still spin. So basically under heavy workload my pc runs just fine but without/ light workload it crahes. This error occurs normaly once every second-third day.

If I remember correctly this problem began ever since I play Valorant (so ever since the closed beta began).

    Tried:

    • Different Ram
    • Different windows builds (2004 and 1709)
-> That might sound weird but for some reason this crash occurs every second-third day on 2004
and only like once a week on 1709. So the windows build has an impact on my problem.
    • Temps are fine, I monitored them the whole time. Also stress tests like Prime95 run without any issue for over an hour with temps at 80 degrees max (celsius).
    • Reseated all cables

Every answer is highly appreciated, also sorry I am not a native english speaker so my english is not the best.

    Self Service for Mobile gone?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 02:27 PM PDT

I have couple of PC:s that will get the fresh WinXP installation in near future, but they are not going to get connected into internet, as they'll be part of a closed intranet. I have used the "Self Service for Mobile" before, but the site is nowhere to be found. How can I activate the installations now?

Need help with Windows Start and Apps

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:02 AM PDT

This is a little weird maybe but I desperately need help and either I'm not looking it up correctly or there's nothing online about my specific issue.

The start menu and basically every Windows app (like the calendar or the settings) is going crazy, it's as if i were pressing the tab button or the arrow keys to navigate them.... except I am not. It's not an issue with the keyboard because it only happens like I said with everything Windows related, not with other pages.

I really have no clue as to how to fix it, I basically can't use anything on Windows because I can't even click on it and it's driving me nuts, I'm a little desperate for help particularly because I cant' really afford to take my PC somewhere to get it fixed, I need it for work and college and I can still kind of use basic stuff.

Any help will be nice, thank you!!

    Windows reinstalling on SSD

I added a HDD to my laptop yesterday. I had windows on my 512gb nvme SSD. After adding HDD, all the files on my SSD became read only. So I am planning to freshly install windows 10 from a usb. How do I do this without removing my existing HDD and does it fix the problem?
