Why can Linux update without a reboot while Windows has to? Posted: 02 Oct 2020 08:45 PM PDT It's one of the main reasons I switched to Linux. The ease of updates is such a nice feature so I'm trying to understand how it works. [link] [comments] |
I installed manjaro linux and have some questions. Posted: 03 Oct 2020 10:36 AM PDT So ı have an old computer and wanted to try linux. Tried other distros but manjaro works like a cream so I think ı can use it. How I install anything because ı cant install any app from package manager? The browser on this thing isn't working at all. Anytime I try to search smth it says security unknown, something went wrong with "the thing I searched". How can I fix it? I want to install my favorite browser brave but how? And lastly I used ubuntu versions and they seem to be easier than manjaro. Should I switch my distro for debian based or stick with arch based. I am a beginner and wanna learn use linux which is the best for me?? [link] [comments] |
Moving my current settings and aps to a clean install. Posted: 03 Oct 2020 11:35 AM PDT Hello everybody. I am currently running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and I want to do a clean install of 20.04 LTS. I was wondering if there is a way to move all my settings and some of my aps to the new install? Maybe a script or a list that I can upload to the new install so that it all gets installed and configured as it was on my previous version? PS Thanks to all you non noobs out there for holding our hands and guiding us through this exciting world of Linux. I for one am very happy I switched, in big part thanks to this subreddit. Posted: 03 Oct 2020 10:23 AM PDT I git cloned a suckless terminal repo and ran make install, however it returned error 127. /bin/sh: 1: pkg-config: not found /bin/sh: 1: pkg-config: not found /bin/sh: 1: c99: not found make: *** [Makefile:22: st.o] Error 127 What could have caused this and how can I attempt to resolve it? i3wm how to change all applications to a new audio output at once? Posted: 03 Oct 2020 08:16 AM PDT i run arch with the i3 window manager and to change audio i use pavucontrol. when i want to swap from my speakers to headphones and vice versa, i have to manually switch all active applications to use the new output. How could i make it so i can switch the audio output for all applications at once like a normal desktop environment? One thing that worked is installing the gnome-control-center and using the audio control in that, however it also downloads a lot of useless dependencies which i rather not do. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Oct 2020 12:19 PM PDT I was installing Ubuntu and when I was partitioning my disk I deleted Windows Loader without thinking and it showed as a separate partition of free space from the free space I had from deleting the D partition. I hope you understand my explanation. [link] [comments] |
TRIM on encrypted NVME Pop_OS 20.04 Posted: 03 Oct 2020 10:44 AM PDT The title says most of it. I have an Samsung 970 EVO nvme as my main drive and the primary partition is encrypted. I was checking TRIM and everything is enabled correctly and it does appear as though /recovery and /boot/efi are being successfully trimmed. However, trying to run trim on / is giving an error "fstrim: /: the discard operation is not supported". Through copious online digging I've realized this is probably related to the fact that the partition is encrypted. I tried one online solution which was to add discard to the crypttab for the partition but that didn't work. Any thoughts or ideas? Is TRIM even necessary in an era of drive-level garbage collection? Happy to provide any other details. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2020 12:15 PM PDT Part of an exam I'm doing in a couple days says to set user filesystem quotas. Looks like I've already been able to do this using the inbuilt /etc/security/limits.conf file, but there's also some guides online recommending I use quota. No problem, should be available in the default repos, just not sure whether it's worth bothering? [link] [comments] |
What would be the reason that my files and folders do not refresh? Posted: 03 Oct 2020 01:51 PM PDT I am using Kubuntu 20.4 and Dolphin. When I create a file in a location, it does not show up there. I have to close out Dolphin and reload it for it to show up. Also, when I download something, and I have the location already open, the folder does not show the downloaded file. It is only after I reload Dolphin does it show up. What could be causing this and how do I fix it? [link] [comments] |

Installing Linux in old Dell computer for 3d print octoprint. Posted: 03 Oct 2020 11:56 AM PDT I would like to say that I know this deals with 3d printing and octoprint, but the issue i have is getting Linux on a wiped dell micro computer. It has built in wifi and a hardwire network port. I can get the headless working with the hardwire, but I cannot connect with the wireless. I can see the wireless through the command prompts and can even get it to see all networks, but cannot get it to work. What my question is, while I need the headless version for octoprint, can I set up wifi using the gui instead of the terminal and then once set up and working, switch it to headless? Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |

Need help with drivers in parrot os (specifically sound) Posted: 03 Oct 2020 07:09 AM PDT Hey all, So literally 2 days ago I bought a new laptop, to be specific it was the new Huawei Matebook D14. I am currently using linux instead of windows as I am so sick of windows. The distro I have is the latest version of Parrot OS Home. Now I'm generally speaking not a complete noob with linux as I have used it quite a few times in the past, but with the lack of driver support for the hardware in this laptop I'm at a loss (or maybe I really am dumb and I'm not looking properly lol). I had also considered using ubuntu but I wanted to use parrot as I used it once in the past and I quite enjoyed it, albeit it was working flawlessly at the time. So when I went to install parrot I noticed it didn't detect my wifi card, so I went ahead with the installation as normal. After installation none of the drivers were installed, which was fixed simply by connecting my phone as a usb hotspot and doing a sudo apt-get update/upgrade. That seemed to fix almost everything except the sound driver. Now the sound itself seems to work fine, however the mic quality is absolutely abysmal and when connecting a headset using the headphone jack it refuses to use that mic. I've tried installing realtek drivers from their actual website, however I am now running into a bunch of errors when performing the 'make' command. I also am unable to perform the './configure' command again. I've tried multiple solutions on the internet but at this point literally nothing has worked. I'd also like to figure out what drivers I actually have installed so I know what I still need to install. Sorry for the long explanation but I didn't wanna miss any details. Cheers, UnoDeaj05 P.S. I stupidly deleted the original files when I ran ./configure (which worked properly the first time) as I wanted to start from scratch, however I can't seem to get configure working either so I don't have that error message saved. Output when running configure: [link] [comments] |
Strange screen issues, hardware or OS? Posted: 03 Oct 2020 10:53 AM PDT Hi guys, I hope you are all doing well! To preface, I am using a Dell XPS 13 9370 laptop, with Ubuntu 18.04.05 and Intel® UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2) (copied and pasted from the about tab in setting). It also has a 4k touchscreen. Last night, my screen start showing some strange flickering and some weird artifacts, I've included some pictures here: https://imgur.com/gallery/BkjKsmg[https://imgur.com/gallery/BkjKsmg](https://imgur.com/gallery/BkjKsmg) https://imgur.com/gallery/qeYsMgd[https://imgur.com/gallery/qeYsMgd](https://imgur.com/gallery/qeYsMgd) Note, this issue only appears to be affecting the bottom two-thirds of my screen. I left it powered off over night and the issue wasn't there when I booted up this morning, until it started about 30 seconds after logged in. I've tried adjusting the screen refresh rate, and the solution mentioned here: here, all to no avail. I think next step might involve something with BIOS because I haven't tried that yet. And of course, it may be that my screen is completely messed up and I'll just have to have it replaced. I have damaged the screen before, by dropping the laptop, but that was two years and the only immediate issue after dropping it was a small patch that wouldn't light up in the top left corner. Do you guys have any thoughts or ideas about what I should try next? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Total beginner: Booting Ubuntu from USB and keeping it on the USB. Posted: 03 Oct 2020 06:31 AM PDT Hello, total Linux noob here, been a Windows guy for ages, but looking for something different. Background blathering and what piqued my interest in Linux: I recently upgraded a few major components in a 12 year old Athlon system: motherboard, Ryzen7 3700x, and DDR4 RAM. Windows made a big fuss about my ancient (12 years old but still working flawlessly) SSD, and I couldn't get much done in windows until I bought a better SSD (500GB, SATAIII). while waiting for the drive, on a whim, I installed Ubuntu, and the whole system leapt into action as though there were no old parts at all, and once I did the 'sudo getdrivers please' command, it was screaming (except for graphics, which I was unable to change resolution). Well, the new drive arrived and I put Windows on it, working great now, but I've got a linux itch now. Ubuntu was faster, and the CPU was COOLER, with Ubuntu. Even with a massive load from BOINC, all 16 CPUS were chugging away for a day and there was no heat issues, but under Windows I had to drop BOINC to 50% of processors and 50% load, before temps were acceptable. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!? I shouted to the sky, much to the annoyance of my neighbors. screw 'em. How is that possible? it took many hours of fiddling with Windows apps and drivers before my temps were manageable again, while Ubuntu did it without blinking. I'm hungry to know more. So, let's get down to the nitty gritty. I heard that you can get a full-on customized and prepped Ubuntu setup on a single USB drive, and I'd like to have that kind of setup for work, and for whenever I'm using another PC that isn't mine (my work requires me to go from site to site, and if I can swap my bulky laptop for a flashdrive, I'll be happy!) so I'm looking for several things from the community.
I've many more questions, but I'll stop for now. Please be kind to this old soul. [link] [comments] |
Installed Ubuntu but there's a display issue and I can't see anything when I try to boot it Posted: 03 Oct 2020 01:55 PM PDT I'm having trouble booting Windows so I thought I'd try Linux. I created an Ubuntu boot USB and started it up, but I was getting a display issue and the text was all messed up, e.g. like this: https://i.imgur.com/qoSpiWu.jpg I tried again with safe graphics mode or whatever it's called and it worked fine, so I installed it. Now I'm trying to start the installed version and I have the same problem. It looks like it's waiting for some kind of input but I don't know what: https://i.imgur.com/I7eoOWN.jpg Any ideas what I can do about this? Is there some way I can start it in safe graphics mode again, or fix the problem properly? [link] [comments] |
Backing up and restoring a dual boot system, but with different partition sizes. How? Posted: 03 Oct 2020 01:53 PM PDT I currently have a dual boot of Linux Mint and Windows 10. Simply put, this is more or less my HD's state: Linux Mint (25GB, ext4) The data partition is shared between both the systems, in order to access the same files. The problem is that my Mint partition keeps getting full, so I want to expand it to 50GB and also have another partition to install or try out other distros. So ideally, it should look like this: Linux Mint (50GB, ext4) I have an external 2TB HD that I have backed everything to, using rsync. However, I would like be to able to image both Linux Mint and Windows and restore them as is into the new partitions. This wouldn't be an issue, except that the new Linux Mint partition will be a different size. Looking at the instructions for something like CloneZilla, I understand that the partition to be restored to needs to be the same size as the original image, so I am not sure I would be able to restore it to a bigger one. What's the easiest way I could achieve what I want, and not have to set up Windows or Mint again? And do I need the back up the /boot/efi partition separately and restore that too? How can I save a text file if the permission is denied? Posted: 03 Oct 2020 08:58 AM PDT I tried to edit a file in /usr/share/ ,but if I try to save I get this message (in atom): https://i.imgur.com/GjGccxd.png And If I try to do "sudo vim (filename)" then it says this: https://i.imgur.com/P5DMAgE.png So how can I save this file?
