Should I switch to Linux expecting faster performance than Windows 10? Posted: 04 Oct 2020 07:05 AM PDT I have a Dell Inspiron, 2012 edition, with just 2GB of RAM and Intel Core i3. I have been thinking to switch to Linux for better performance. I shortlisted a few after looking at a few YT videos on Linux Distros: Zorin OS Lite, Manjaro, and Linux Mint, which one can work the best for me in terms of performance? [link] [comments] |
I'm building a new computer. Is there a list of components that do/don't play nice with Linux? Posted: 03 Oct 2020 11:23 PM PDT In particular I know people have had issues with graphics cards. My proposed graphics card is the MSI GeForce GTX1660 S Ventura CA OC. The guy helping me choose components has no knowledge of Linux. Thanks Edit: thanks for all your replies. It seems NVIDIA and Broadcom have had issues in the past and a lot of you are still leary of them, although a few have had no issues. I think because this is my first time building a computer and I'm still new to Linux, I'll try to stick to the tried and tested Intel, AMD, and Radeon. Thanks again for your advice [link] [comments] |
Your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration, ryzen 5 4500u Posted: 04 Oct 2020 07:33 AM PDT Is this message supposed to pop up, because my laptop doesn't have dedicated graphics card? If not, how do I fix it? Linux Mint 20 [link] [comments] |
(I'm new to linux) I'm looking for a POS(Point of Sale System) for my business. Posted: 04 Oct 2020 06:14 AM PDT Hey everyone, I'm new to linux and I'm wondering if there are any POS softwares available for linux, we had many problems with the old system based on windows os, and we decided to change to linux. I would appreciate and help and suggestions, thank you. [link] [comments] |
Will the still existing GNU GRUB make trouble when installing Linux again? Posted: 04 Oct 2020 01:31 PM PDT So more than a month ago, I managed to ruin my installation of Linux Ubuntu and now everytime I start my PC, if I don't choose from the BIOS to boot to Windows, I just get Grub Rescue. I want to keep using Linux, but didn't have the time to try installing it again back when I broke it. So since I am going to have some more free time next week, I just want to know: can I install Ubuntu or any other distro with the GNU GRUB of the broken Linux still in the system? I would usually try without asking or doing much research, but I just want to be done with this task, so I can keep using Linux in peace once I don't have much free time again. [link] [comments] |
What can be used instead of snaps? Posted: 04 Oct 2020 09:14 AM PDT I'm an Arch linux user since 5 months and due to compatibility issues with several apps that I need, I want to move to ubuntu/debian based distribution. But I'm concerned about snaps. I heard that snaps come with dependencies of the desired application and I don't want it because I don't have much space (64 gb on a persistent usb drive). What can I use instead of snaps? [link] [comments] |
Run Script after Keyboard/Mouse Trigger Posted: 04 Oct 2020 02:11 PM PDT I have a script that sends turns on a smart light i have next to my desk. Im looking to see if there is a way to run a command or script after there is mouse movement or keyboard detection? As in, when there is mouse or keyboard detection, a script or command will begin? Hope that makes sense. [link] [comments] |

Wi-Fi not working on Linux Mint 20 Posted: 04 Oct 2020 11:41 AM PDT Hello everyone, I recently managed to install and get LM 20 to work on my Asus Transformer Book T200-TA, which was no easy task (the 32-bit bootloader was a b*tch to get to work...). But now I have a new problem: Wi-Fi. I can´t find it anywhere. When I open my Network panel, Ethernet is the only option. I suppose the problem is with the wireless card not being detected/recognised, or with the driver. I remember from using Windows that my wireless card is a Broadcom and I see a lot of comments online about these cards being hard to configure with Linux. I have tried many solutions from different forums, such as installing other drivers, etc, but none has worked so far. A little bit of help would be appreciated. Note: I manage to access the Internet using USB tethering on my phone. My laptop detects this connection as an Ethernet connection. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |

I can't figure out why my mute led is swapped Posted: 04 Oct 2020 01:32 PM PDT I recently installed linux mint 20 on my HP Compaq nc6400 and the led light on my mute button appears to not work as intended. When the volume is on the led is also on, when I mute the volume the light shuts off. Anyone knows how to reverse this? Alsamixer doesn't show the "mute-LED mode" option so I can't reverse it from there. Manjaro didn't give me this issue but both xubuntu and mint 19 did, so I guess it's just related to ubuntu based distros. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Other than Desktop Environment, what are the differences between distros for a noob user? Posted: 04 Oct 2020 06:51 AM PDT Hello everyone, for starters, I'm a noob. I've been trying some distros in the last few months. So far, used fedora, Ubuntu, mint, lubuntu and PopOS. My question is: For a very basic user, like me, that spends 90% of his time using a browser or VLC player, what's the relavance of the distro that's under the hood? I can tell that gnome looks much better that xfce (but it's heavier, thou). But I can't tell what's the difference in using fedora or Ubuntu, when I'm using the same gnome DE. I was watching a video, out of curiosity, in which the guy used Arch, with a gnome DE, and it didn't look that different from my Ubuntu 20.04. I KNOW there's a difference, but what's the relevance for a basic user? Should I even care about it? Should I just find a DE that I find beautiful and keep using it? Am I overthinking it all? Oh God, I'm hyperventilating... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Oct 2020 12:44 PM PDT I ran sudo mount —rbind /sys /mnt/sys and sudo mount —rbind /mnt /mnt/dev. Then, I tried to run sudo chroot /mnt /bin/bash and I received no such file or directory. I don't know what to do. There is a file called bash in /bin. What could be causing this? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Oct 2020 10:27 AM PDT The only thing that's keeping me from using me dwm is the status bar, since I'm on my laptop i think it's very important for me. I use dwmblocks since it seems a better option but I don't know any shell scripting so can someone please post some simple scripts that's functional. For battery, brightness and volume until i learn scripting. also please tell me how to add a systemtray to the bar. [link] [comments] |

Unable to install any distro. Help! Posted: 04 Oct 2020 04:36 AM PDT I'm trying to install Ubuntu/Xubuntu using a bootable pendrive. I used Rufus to create the PD. The problem is, whenever the system boots into the OS, it works fine for a few minutes and randomly gets completely frozen with a glitched display. Attaching the image in this post. At this point the system is unrecoverable and the only solution is to restart/power off the system physically (using the Restart and Power button in CPU cabinet). I tried booting/using the OS through pendrive only but it still gets glitched up. I'm using Windows 10 currently and wanted to dual boot the system. Earlier I suspected it's some hardware issue but since W10 is working all fine, I don't think that's the reason anymore. Any kind of help would be appreciated. Thank you! My system configuration:

Posted: 04 Oct 2020 09:11 AM PDT Hello all, I have what I hope is a quick question. I play with ham radios and like using a program called chirp to program them. I used to use a Toshiba laptop but after a windows update bricked my computer I switched to Chromebook. After finding that there are no apps for Android to program radios I researched how to use chirp, a radio programing software on a Chromebook. I found that Linux was the only way possible. I went through the steps and installed xfce4 with crouton for a dual operating system on my Chromebook. I then installed chirp "sudo apt install chirp" but now I don't know how to get the program to connect to and recognize the usb programming cable. I know it has something to do with something called "dialout" but my attempts to find this in the menus and through what terminal code instructions I can find to add user to dialout have been to no avail. Any help I can get for connecting chirp to my programming cable would be much appreciated thank you for your time. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Oct 2020 05:58 AM PDT Noob linux user here. Is there any way I can create a desktop shortcut that I could click, and then it would open terminal and run a command by itself? For instance, I use cyberghost VPN. and I hate to open terminal and type "sudo cyberghostvpn --connect --country-code CA" every time (nb. I don't like things to autoconnect on startup) Thank you [link] [comments] |
