I finally installed and started to use linux. With some questions :) Posted: 01 Oct 2020 09:07 AM PDT I got my old computer to try linux. Here is specs. DualCore Pentium 2.2GHz, an amd gpu with low memory(idk so much about this gpu), 2gb ddr2 Ram and a slow 250gb hdd. So I decided to install Lubuntu to it. Boot-up time is unexpected. With windows it bootup in 2'20'', with lubuntu I was expecting lower but it bootup within 3'26''. The overall experience is fine ı am started to get used to it but app launch times are longer than windows too. I am wondering that my computer was running Windows7 Ultimate with 32-bit, but I installed 64-bit Lubuntu. Is that the problem with speed? And if not what can I do with this, or should I change distro to smth else. [link] [comments] |
How is one distro different than other? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:40 AM PDT Hi fellow Linux users. I've been a Linux user for about a year and I enjoy everything that it has to offer. But I'm a noob user and as a noob user I find it difficult to comprehend even the main differences between distros. I have used many desktop distros in the long past but never appreciate it actually. Until I tried Manjaro for the first time a year ago. I felt like I had a complete distro and something that suits me. I chose gnome and the only difference I noticed was the package manager. I read a few things about Manjaro, that it's based on Arch etc... but I couldn't understand what that means... I mean what does Arch have that other distros don't? I saw many memes and posts about its difficulty and the challengers that user face daily but still don't get it. I switched to Ubuntu 20.04 this week cause we have Ubuntu at work and I want to know a few things about Ubuntu. I haven't seen any difference at the moment. One last question is: Why do we need so many desktop distros? I get that some distros are specialized for certain things but when you want something for your personal desktop there are many options. I mean wouldn't be better to put our effort and time to just one distro? [link] [comments] |
Can't find specific tutorial site anymore Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:25 AM PDT It was free of chrage, I think held mainly white or some other bright colour, with topics/sections represented by comic-y icons. It had several progressing sections touching every aspect of Linux. Does that ring a bell for anyone? [link] [comments] |
Installing linux (Elementery OS) on a macbook air 2015 Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:01 AM PDT Ive been wanting to install linux onto my macbook air for quite some time now because of how much more lightweight it is. Everything is going great so far and ive been able to boot from the usb drive into the OS, however when it is installing, it cannot see the internal drive, only SDA shows up, which is the USB drive. even when i quit the installer and go into the file system program, it only shows the USB drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks [link] [comments] |
What groups should I belong to as a normal user? Any best practices? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 02:09 PM PDT I just did a fresh installation of Arch Linux and I was wondering what my primary and secondary groups should be. I did: # useradd -m -g wheel me I understand this sets the wheel group as my primary group and I just need to edit the /etc/sudoers file. Is this a good practice? Should I belong to different groups for security reasons? Thanks in advance guys. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 09:40 AM PDT Upon booting even in recovery mode, I faced with /sbin/unit: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/x86_64-Linux-gnu/libcryptsetup.so.12: invalid ELF header. This is followed by the whole kernel panic deal. Any help will be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
How to run Pop!_OS with secure boot turned on? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:43 AM PDT Hello everyone! I just installed Pop OS on my laptop. During installation I had to turn off secure boot in the BIOS. I thought I'd revert the settings after installation but my Laptop doesn't let me do that because "Pop! _OS has been blocked by current security policy". Is it okay to run your computer with secure boot turned off? Is there a way I can give Pop OS admin privileges so to speak? [link] [comments] |
Having problems with grub. Grub won't show. Posted: 01 Oct 2020 06:50 AM PDT Ok I'll try to keep it brief, i need help. My Acer laptop initially had windows, i then later dual booted it with ubuntu. Later i uninstalled ubuntu because for my potato pc it was heavy weight. At this point i couldnt uninstall grub, i dont remember why but i was unable to remove grub. So in my laptop theres an option what would be boot preference, i just shifted grub below windows bootloader so according to priority window will open. Now recently i installed LinuxLite because i wanted light weight os, all installation was succesful but after installation grub never showed up. I even placed it at higher priority still it won't open. I tried fixing this by solution i saw online of using boot-repair-disk. It didnt work and this was the log page. This was the error i got : error on paste.ubuntu.com . Can someone please help me as in what could i do. I am really clueless and have never encountered such problem before. Thank you. Also if this subreddit isn't the right place to post this can you guys tell me where should i post this? tl;dr : previously had ubuntu dual boot with windows, uninstalled ubuntu couldn't uninstall grub, installed a new os linuxLite, now grub isnt showing [link] [comments] |
Help, linux on mac. (dual boot) Posted: 01 Oct 2020 12:05 PM PDT I've been trying to create a live USB for linux on my Mac, and I've been having problems. According to the Ubuntu and Manjaro pages, there are a couple more steps to go through to create a USB which is bootable to mac. Unfortunately, while I erased and reformatted the USB, apple has removed the option to 'choose scheme' in its disk utility app. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but my iso's won't write to my USB properly. I'm going to try again this weekend, but is there any advice? (Macbook Pro 2016, serial number: C02SF31FGVC1) [link] [comments] |
Internet Problems in Ubuntu 20.4 Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:24 AM PDT For a few days I have been having issues with downloading files of about 100 MB and over. They will download for a bit and then it will stop and give me the error, "Interrupted: Network Error." I noticed this when downloading files from Dropbox. I thought that it was a Dropbox issue at first but then when I tried to download from other sites, I got the same error. Then I thought it could be and issue with Opera, but then I tried Firefox and again got the same error. I have other computers running Ubuntu so I tried to download files from the same sites that gave me issues on my computers. The files downloaded just fine on those other computers. So now it looks like it is an issue with my computer. Not sure what could be causing this problem. Will someone please help me troubleshoot and find out why this is happening? I am not that good with networking type issues. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2020 07:22 AM PDT I currently have a PC with 3x SSD's:
It also has two mass storage drives which are a 2tb and 3tb Hard drives. I'm interested in installing linux on the 250gb SSD and using it for productivity. Is there any chance this could mess up my other drives with Windows on? Secondly can I access both mass storage drives on Linux and Windows (these are media drives) Lastly is it easy to get a bootloader screen to select which OS I want booting and if nothing is selected after so many seconds a default one is loaded? Best way to dual boot BionicPup(32) with Windows 7 ? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:17 PM PDT Win 7 is already installed. As I see it I have 2 options:
LICK might be slower but I have seen barely anything to support one over the other. I'll probably research a bit more and then decide. (EeePC netbook) Specs: Intel Atom N2600 with 1gb RAM [link] [comments] |

Trying to create a batch of users account on Ubuntu 16.04 using a script Posted: 01 Oct 2020 12:02 PM PDT Hey guys, basically trying to do what the title says. New on at my job and having a hard time getting the script to actually add the users. The script doesn't error out, but it also doesn't appear to be doing anything. I have a txt file with about 25 users on it, each on their own line. I'm trying to run the command:
But again nothing seems to happen when I do that. Here is the script I've been told to use. Would love it if somebody could help show me what it is that I'm doing wrong. Here is the script:

Can someone help me add smb shares to fstab? Posted: 01 Oct 2020 07:39 AM PDT I want to automount three network drives and I remember doing that via fstab once upon a time but I don't remember what I added to the file and I'm hoping someone here could help me write it. Dolphin path for the share looks like this smb://mediabox/DISK1/ What else do I need to include? Credentials / mount point I assume (where should I mount them?) Other details? I'm on Manjaro with KDE if that matters. [link] [comments] |

DE to support different scaling levels across different monitors Posted: 01 Oct 2020 09:31 AM PDT Long story short, just upgraded from 3x 1920x1080 setup to 2x 1920x1080 & 1x 3840x2160 Currently running Elementary OS with pantheon, and I can only seem to set display scaling across all monitors or none at all. What DE/setup best supports normal scaling across the standard monitors, but then something like 1.5x scaling on the 3840x2160 monitor? [link] [comments] |
Problem with Linux, Firefox, and or speakers Posted: 30 Sep 2020 08:40 PM PDT Whenever I open Firefox, my audio gets a ton of static. Playing music or videos sounds fine before opening Firefox, but once I do I have to restart to get rid of the issue. I've tried different speakers with the same result. It seems that whenever Firefox opens it screws with the audio output no matter what, until I restart. I'm running Linux Mint and everything (drivers and apps) are up to date [link] [comments] |
