Dell XPS 7390 2-in-1 vs Lenovo Yoga C940

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 10:57 AM PDT

    • Update, 1 month in: Days before having to choose between the devices, I still find myself incredibly torn. Here's what I'm wrestling with: The Yoga's solid all-aluminum build compared to the XPS's carbon fiber palmrest and flimsy plastic screen bezel. The quieter, spaced-out keys compared to the XPS's loud, cramped, yet bubbly keys. The Yoga's instant wake time compared to the XPS's absurdly slow wait and failing fingerprint sensor. The Yoga's impressive sound bar compared to the XPS's weak, barely-there nearly-non-existent speakers (watched the NBA semifinals on both for comparison). The Yoga's extra inch of screen does matter, and its 16:9 aspect ratio is better for media streaming (paired with its superior sound), but the XPS does display more web with text wrapping (5-6 lines worth). The microSD slot of the XPS is in my opinion the better no dongle needed option than the USB-A, as it will be used for the Switch, drone, and DSLR, but YMMV. Dell even includes a USB-C to USB-A dongle with the XPS.

First, the basics, or TLDR: XPS is the more premium and performance choice (but not perfect, as it comes with quite a few faults). Yoga is an inexpensive close contender. The XPS wins out with its 32GB RAM in such a compact package and smaller bezels, over the Yoga's garaged pen, mechanical privacy shutter, and slightly larger screen (don't be fooled by 14" vs 13", the difference is actually 13.9" compared to 13.4"). For some, you might also consider that the XPS has a microSD card slot while the Yoga has a USB-A (wasn't a factor for me, except that makes the XPS pair better with my Switch, but the Yoga better for legacy devices without an adapter). - Battery: The Yoga edges out the XPS in battery life by an hour or two of regular use, significant for those on the go. Both laptops were purchased in FHD to maximize battery life. - Build Quality: The XPS's top and bottom case do not line up perfectly, nor do the hinges. The soft-touch black interior also does not align perfectly with the silver exterior shell above the keyboard. All barely noticeable, but there. The Yoga on the other hand, appears to have perfect alignment of all components. More noticeably, the screen on XPS is sunken in and you can feel the edges of the plastic surrounding it. It sinks in more when pushing on the screen, especially at the corners. Unacceptable on a 2-in-1 touchscreen laptop, especially at this price point. The Yoga's screen has no give when pushing hard on the screen, even at the edges, which are perfectly smooth. - Cost & Specs: Dell XPS on Amazon, $1800 after tax. Lenovo Yoga on Labor Day Sale, $1400 after tax. Same Intel Core i7 CPU and Intel Iris Plus GPU. XPS has more memory at 32 GB vs Yoga's 16 GB (max) but a smaller SSD of 512 GB vs 1 TB. All memory is soldered.

    Screen

    • Yoga's 14" screen is hardly noticeable, and technically has a smaller resolution due to its aspect ratio of 16:9 [1920 x 1080] vs the XPS's non-standard 16:10 [1920 x 1200]. The Yoga's bezels are larger than need be, adding an extra inch to the laptop's width with no extra vertical screen real estate.
    • The Yoga's screen is nearly, if not sometimes brighter, than the XPS (despite the Yoga's lower nits rating of 400 compared to 500 on the XPS) The Yoga didn't have an auto-brightness setting, but it may be that I need to update the Windows version for it. The XPS appeared to have lower brightness, even when set to maximum, due to its auto-brightness setting. With auto-brightness turned off, the XPS is only slightly brighter than the Yoga. I prefer the Yoga's cooler tone to the XPS's warmer sepia tint (adjustable, of course). It looks more true-to-life than the XPS. The Yoga's screen, however, is more reflective, which is made even more apparent by its larger bezels (I often catch my own gaze at the top bezel and see my fingers typing at the chin bezel). Dell's anti-reflective screen, when off, appears sort of like a headlight dimmer on some vehicle rearview mirrors, with a blueish-green tint.

    Keyboard

    • The XPS's keyboard is easier (and funner) to type on, despite its oddly placed delete key next to the power button (which I often find myself pressing mistakenly) (but how did I never notice the Macbook 12 doesn't even have one?). It is noticeably louder (but bubbly, like the sound of typing on an iPhone with the keyboard click sound on). Along with its soft-touch carbon fiber palm rest, typing on the XPS is just a more pleasant overall experience. For those familiar with the Macbook 12's notoriously shallow keyboard, you might notice that at first glance, the keyboards appear nearly identical, but when you compare them in person, the XPS's keys are ever-so-slightly taller and smaller. However, I do find that the keys occasionally get stuck if I just opened up the laptop and didn't press hard enough (since I am used to how easily they do give after warming up).
    • The Yoga's keyboard is more solid and springy, but I found it to be strenuous to type on by comparison, due to the smaller, more spaced out keys and springyness. It is also more quiet, due to the dampening of the keys. I am personally not a fan of the shield shaped keys, or the efficient manufacturing choice of connecting the "|" key to the Enter key to account for multiple keyboard layouts on a single keyboard case.
    • Though, I actually ended preferring the larger left/right arrow keys and fn + arrow keys layout for pg up/down and home/end on the Yoga, despite initial preference for the smaller left/right arrow keys and dedicated pg up/down buttons on the XPS (the non-2-in-1 counterpart XPS has the same layout as the Yoga).
    • On the XPS, in addition to the F and J keys, the Esc key and Down arrow key have small ridges to find them easily.
    • On the Yoga, the ability to toggle fn key behavior from the taskbar (must be done in the BIOS on the XPS), along with the fn + spacebar shortcut for backlit keys, is quite thoughtful.

    Convenience & Extras

    • The XPS's external LED battery indicator was surprisingly useful (displayed in 4 quadrants, presumably 0-25%, 25-50, 50-75, 75-100, and will go from white to orange when under 10%). The placement of one Thunderbolt port on each side of the XPS is more convenient than the aesthetic of having no ports on the Yoga's clean right edge (to allow for pen storage). The Yoga has a near-instant wake from sleep time and more reliable fingerprint reader (also more practically located on the palm rest rather than power button), which is convenient if you task-switch between devices. The Yoga's tiny garaged pen (which cannot be removed easily in clamshell mode due to the notch side and the screen being in the way) is small enough to be meant for a Samsung Galaxy Note, rather than a laptop. The sound bar is as fantastic as expected, and blows the XPS's tiny speakers out of the water.
    • The Yoga has no soft rubber feet or strips anywhere on the laptop to protect it in presentation mode (when you set the laptop face down on its keyboard, screen facing you), while the XPS has 2 nearly unnoticeable strips above the keys (black, to match the interior), as well as 2 more (silver, to match the exterior) on the hinge. The Yoga's strips on the bottom of the case when in regular clamshell mode are a harder plastic material, instead of the soft rubber the XPS has all around.
    • Sidenote: The Intel sticker on my XPS came crooked and creased. The Yoga comes with 4 (!) stickers, 3 on the palm rest (Intel i7, Intel Graphics, Lenovo features and support QR code), and 1 on the back (Windows).

    Critical Issues

    • I ran into some issues on both laptops, some more severe, but all of them apparently fixable, possibly with professional repair, or downloading of the right drivers. First, the XPS: the screen occasionally adopts a red tint that doesn't go away unless I restart the computer. Seems to just be a display driver error. Yoga: The screen went completely black 3 times over the course of 2 days, each time while I had browser tabs open and was working in Word, on battery power. The power indicator light stays on, but the keyboard, trackpad, and screen, are all unresponsive. Hard reset needed. Another issue is that the trackpad and keyboard will disable itself, because the laptop thinks it is in tablet mode, despite it being in clamshell mode and I am continuously using the keyboard and trackpad. I've reinstalled Windows 10 and it seems to have fixed the problem. You can Google either of these issues and see that they might be Windows issues and not specific to these laptops.

    Overall

    • Ultimately, the Yoga is a well-built, solid machine, with a sturdy (almost too sturdy) keyboard and impressive sound bar hinge. I also find it more comfortable to hold, to just grab and go, due to the rounded edges all around, compared to the sleek yet sharp cut edges of the XPS (the XPS, however, has a more rounded screen bezel on all corners in tablet form). ~Close, really close, but no cigar. XPS still comes out the winner, with its high performance, comfortable keyboard, and tiny (TINY!) bezels. Neither laptop is perfect, but XPS, I choose you.~

    What do you guys think?

    Iris Xe or MX450

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:19 PM PDT

Ok looking at these two Asus models (ASUS ZenBook 14 UX435EA, or UX435EG).

One has Iris Xe, the other has MX450. So what's the difference, and what's the better option?

I read that the Xe out performs the MX450 but I'm no expert at all.

Is this an expected amount of heat for the laptop?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 02:45 PM PDT

For starters, specs: ASUS K56C, Intel CORE i5, Nvidia GEFORCE 740M.
My old laptop started up heating pretty bad. Somewhere around 65C idle and up to above 80 if busy.
Expecting it to be an issue related to dust/thermal paste I paid to get those things done and kicked a format for a good measure (also got a fan replaced, as it supposedly has died). Now it's somewhat sub 60 idle and sub 80 under strain (with League of Legends as a test app). And while it seems to lose said heat faster, it heats up pretty fast too. Doesn't feel like a much of an improvement. Should I be worried, or do I just expect too much?

As always, thanks in advence for your time.

One of my laptop speakers is broken

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 02:26 PM PDT

I got an Asus Vivobook laptop for school a little under a year ago and it's been perfectly fine up until around two weeks ago when one of the speakers started making crackling noises when I'm listening to stuff. I've tried everything I can to fix it but nothing has worked. Suggestions?

Where to buy the HP Envy x360 13 inch with AMD?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 09:44 PM PDT

Hi, I decided to buy the above mentioned laptop but it doesn't seem to be listed on the HP website. I know this laptop came out this year and have several reviews of it saved, but even after contacting HP sales I haven't received a clear answer as to why it's not listed. I've checked other stores as well and I can't find it anywhere. Anyone know anything? I'll post a link to the 15 in version.

Halp! Keyboard + touchpad only enable when HP x360 studio G5 is at weird angle!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:11 PM PDT

Sigh. Just had my faulty touchscreen replaced by HP engineer today, only to find that it now

    1. disables keyboard + touchpad unless completely level or tilted away from me (even bottom of laptop facing me is fine, but as soon as keyboard tilts toward me at all, it disables)

    2. facing keyboard down toward floor causes laptop to enter sleep (!?!?)

    What the heck is this?

Everyone slightly tilts their laptop toward themselves when reclining / lying down with laptop on lap. This is sudden weird new behaviour and I've searched everywhere for how to recalibrate the orientation sensor / gyroscope which I believe lies under the keyboard.

Replacement battery - Avoiding used batteries sold as new?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 01:10 PM PDT

What are some known reliable sources for buying said battery packs? I'm looking to buy a replacement battery pack for my laptop. It's a 2017 acer predator helios (ph315-51p). I've never bought replacement laptop battery packs before, but whenever I shop for lithium ion cells/packs on the open internet, I've heard of/seen lots of sites that reskin used battery packs/cells and sell them as new (without disclosing that they are used, if that wasn't clear.) Is this a common thing when buying replacement laptop battery packs?

Need suggestion for new laptop please

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 12:58 PM PDT

    Hi,

After finishing university, I'm now looking for a new "professional" laptop. Until now I haven't had a lot of hands on many laptop brands.

Coming from a macbook air 13" (2013), I'd like a laptop with more power to process large data sets (on SPSS) (No gaming,NO photo or video editing needed) browse internet, run Word, Powerpoint and other programs simultaneously. I'm also using my laptop to watch Netflix, Youtube etc. That's why I also like a good display (13"-15"). Good battery life an a sturdy build would be a big plus.

My budget is around 1400 euros.

I'm looking forward to read your suggestions!

    Cheers

What's a good laptop for the Sims 4?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 12:41 PM PDT

Says it needs i7 intel core and 3.2 GHz at least. My laptop now isn't a gaming laptop and runs it just fine so I don't want to buy an expensive gaming laptop, just a regular one that can run games. Please include links. Thank you!

HP Omen red vertical line in a middle of a screen.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:48 AM PDT

After a 15 months of using an Omen a red vertical line appeared on my laptop's screen yesterday. It happened 3 times already since then. I have a monitor connected and it's just fine - no lines or anything. Yesterday I had to reset the laptop to make it disappear. Today, it appeared for like 30 seconds and then it was gone. Weird. My warranty expired, and I'm thinking about buying a HP 1-year care pack and maybe send them a laptop? Idk. Any thoughts?

[xpost] Medion p6661 erazer notebook won't start, keys stuck

    Posted: 01 Oct 2020 11:23 AM PDT

So I was minding my own business, watching a YouTube video when my laptop beeped and fell out.
I restarted it after a while, but got stuck on the login. The keys don't seem to work. I plugged in a mouse and I can move and click on anything and it will work, I just can't type. I have a pin login and when I choose the backup password option, there seems to be a hanging key as the whole bar fills up with dots. Obviously and annoyingly I can't see which key might be stuck. When starting up I can press all the Fs I want, but since the keys are stuck, it won't do a thing.
Also when I start up, the fans start blowing like crazy. The laptop itself is cold as ice and not particularly dusty.
    Pls halp.
