What is this? It prevents my laptop from shutting down or restarting (Asus TUF FX505DT)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:12 AM PDT

I have this weird armoury crate popup that I haven't seen before until 20 minutes ago, I have an Asus TUF gaming fx505du, someone please explain what this is.

I’ve been gifted this old laptop, needs a new screen but what other upgrades can I put in to it to boost performance. Based in the EU if that helps for ordering parts?

    Torn between two old devices

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 03:22 PM PDT

Okay, I realize both of these laptops are far from dream computers. I acquired them free, and am in a bad enough financial place that it was worth accepting. I'm looking to sell one of them to get a bit of gas or grocery cash, but I'd like to know how they measure up to each other practically.

An ancient Dell with an older processor but more memory: https://laptoping.com/dell-inspiron-17r-n7110-review.html

And a newer HP with much less memory: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05349067

Both have been factory reset and upgraded to windows 10.

I'm wondering which could give me more practical household use, I'd hate to get rid of one that could have been more useful to me. It would only be used for streaming, creating documents, and I'd love to be able to install one or two small art programs but hopefully not until I purchase an external drive to save them on.

Which would you recommend selling vs keeping? And is there any good place to even sell such an old machine quickly?

I realize this is probably a very silly question but I don't know anyone who knows computers more so than I do.

    Starter gaming laptop

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 03:16 PM PDT

I need help finding a laptop for my son. He has requested a gaming laptop for his birthday/Christmas. The games that he is looking to play are RoBlox, Minecraft, and games of that sort. Historically, he has played those games on his smartphone or tablet.

Hes only 12 years old, so Im apprehensive about splurging on a $800+ system, when a budget laptop will do just as well.

The criteria that he wants in a laptop is a lot of storage, I'm assuming 512kb-1TB, and he wants a touchscreen. My question is will a 4gb ram laptop be suffice to play Roblox and such? Any recommendations or advice is welcome. Thanks.

    Laptop upgrade suggestions?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 11:13 AM PDT

Hi everyone, first post here. I think this is the right sub for this, please tell me if I'm wrong though.

I currently have a Samsung RV520 that I bought summer 2011. I love this thing, and I have only needed to have it professionally serviced once after it was forced to install Windows 10 (thanks Microsoft). But it has slowed down significantly, and I feel it's time to upgrade. I want to stick with Samsung as a brand because I find all of their products (that I use at least) super reliable.

My question is; with a budget of $500-$750, what are some recommendations (preferably Samsung but open to other suggestions) that you all have in regards to a new laptop?

    ASUS TUF Questions

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 01:07 PM PDT

    ASUS TUF

So this is the laptop I've been looking at. After doing some research, it seems the Ryzen 9 is a solid CPU and the RTX2060 is great as well. I understand the half-gig SSD affects the price but why it so low compared to other laptops that are more expensive but don't have hardware near as good as this.

Basically I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this laptop and/or it's hardware. I want a machine that can do and run mostly anything without having to worry about the question "can I run this?"

I mostly play Paradox strategy games but also use Cubase (a DAW) for recording music and making sound fx for games. I've had a few hiccups on my current set up in Cubase and I can't really run anything on high.

    What do you think?

    installing Windows 10 on SSD

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:08 AM PDT

I have a HP 250 G7 Laptop ( i3 1005G1, 4+4 RAM, 1TB HDD) and the laptop came with windows 10 installed on the HDD. I recently installed an M.2 SSD (128 GB), and it is showing up in 'This PC'.

How do I remove the windows installed on the HDD and get it installed on the SSD? (I can get a cheap windows 10 key from eBay).

What Steps should i take to make battery last longer ?

I am concerned about the rapid decrease in battery capacity. I always put my laptop on battery mode (where charge is limited to max 60%). I know that battery capacity decreases over time but i wanted to know if i could delay it.

P.S. It's been 1 year since i bought the laptop

Keyboard and Touchpad won't work after SSD swap + Windows Install. Fan does what it wants

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 12:22 PM PDT

Cleaned out a laptop and swapped in a new SSD, new windows install.

At first the touchpad wouldn't work, so I used an external mouse, at this time the keyboard still works.

I tear it apart assuming I forgot to plug the ribbon cable back into the board, or maybe it's loose.

Boot it back up, same issue.

I've tried uninstalling / reinstalling the drivers, (windows shows it reconizes the touchpad)

    Nothing.

Now I boot it up and the keyboard doesn't respond. The "Num Lock" light is on the keyboard and the power button works, but none of the keys work.

The CPU fan is also acting weird (brand new fan), it doesn't turn on until into windows and at 50C+

Next time I boot it up it doesn't turn on at all.

Sometimes the fan rpm doesn't even match the cpu temp

I'm very confused and could use some help. I'm pretty convinced this is not a physical issue since I've tried reconnecting the touchpad ribbon cable multiple times, and the keyboard was working just fine yesterday. The fan does what ever it wants.

I've been working on this this thing too long and googled everything, I've tried multiple things not listed in this post

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Need help with HP Envy x360 15-ee0xxx

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:39 AM PDT

Bought the laptop in the title with a stylus, within a week the stylus stopped working.
This was a month ago, contacted HP support right away (October 8) and they said a replacement would ship within a few days. I got an email saying estimated shipping date 2 months from then (Nov 29). That seemed crazy so I contacted support again and they said priority shipping would be applied, yet the estimated shipping date changed to 3 months from then (Dec 27).

I bought this laptop specifically for the stylus, and I have no idea what to do now, any help would be appreciated.

Should I push my luck with support further? Is there a replacement stylus I could buy in the meantime?

Laptop running slow for no reason

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:48 AM PDT

Yesterday my laptop was running fine. Today i turned it on and it was very slow and laggy. I thought this could be some malware, and so i downloaded 3 anti-malware software, and none of them found any malware. At this point, I thought reinstalling windows could fix it. But nope, it was still laggy. This had never happened to me before. Yesterday i was still playing games smoothly. Anyone got a clue on why this is happening. I'm trying to get last bit of help before taking it to repair shop. thanks.

[Question] League on i7-10510u MX250 16 RAM on huawei Matebook 14

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:39 AM PDT

Hi guys, I'm considering buying the huawei Matebook d 14 with i7-10510u MX250 GB 16 RAM to play league of legends and do online classes.

I know League is not a demanding game and I know it can play it, but I'd like to play on high graphics settings..

Does anyone know how much FPS I will get on high settings, or if someone tried league on their Matebook how much FPS do you get?

    Thank you very much.

    XPS 15 v MBP 16 for college/CS

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:10 AM PDT

Hi! I'm currently deciding between the XPS 15 9500 with the i7-10750h with GTX 1650TI and the base MBP 16. I plan on keeping one of these laptops for all 4yrs of college, where I'll be majoring in CS. The XPS 15 will have the default 1080p screen, the 4K is far too expensive.

Performance doesn't matter to me, I should be fine with either of these. It'll mainly be used for college stuff(docs...coding in the future..vids). No gaming or anything like that.

Having said that, which one of the devices would be better to keep for the next 4 years? if you have any other laptop suggestions let me know. OS doesn't matter.

Price is also not a factor but I need to pick between these two.

    This is what I prioritize:

-Battery life (how does the XPS's 86wh compare to MBP's 99wh?)

    -Screen

    -Keyboard/Typing Experience

    Thanks!
