Do routers really make the difference? Posted: 30 Oct 2020 12:50 PM PDT I currently have a default Arris Modem and Router from Optimum. I was on the verge of buying a NightHawk router either the router alone or one that comes with the modem the 2 in 1 router/modem. Someone told me Routers and modems don't make your internet faster. If you have slow internet it will just be slow. Can anyone confirm? [link] [comments] |
Consistent 25-30% packet loss with an advanced home network Posted: 30 Oct 2020 06:37 PM PDT Hi, to preface I recently upgraded all my hardware, every ethernet cable in the home is cat 5e or higher, and we have 1 gigabit internet. My hardware is: Modem- Arris sb8200 Router- Mikrotik Hex Switches- Netgear GS108, Linksys LGS108p, Mikrotik RB260GSP Wifi- Rukkus r500 My brother and I have tried troubleshooting this issue for over a month. We had someone come out and check the physical cable running to our home which was cleared as Ok. Modem, routers, switches have all been updated. We have been using Pingplotter, Wireshark, and other programs to try and target the problem but we cant pinpoint it. We ran a massive packet capture and still could not find the problem. My brother works as a network professional if this gives any sense of the scope of the issue. At this point the issue has stopped all workflow, productivity, and relaxation in the house. Please help! Feel free to ask any questions and ill respond. [link] [comments] |
Running cable to garden office (30m) Posted: 30 Oct 2020 03:39 AM PDT Going to be running a duct underground with network and coax cables to a garden office (around 30m/100ft). Worth running fibre as well to future proof? Was thinking two cat6 and two coax for now [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:16 PM PDT Hi, I'm planning to submit a complaint to my ISP (Internet Service Provider). I really often got spikes/disconnects randomly every few minutes or so. This issue has been happening for almost a month now and the disconnect can last for about 2-5 minutes every time it happens. What are some solid proofs should I prepare to show my ISP? Right now, I only have a screenshot of my cmd ping test (there are multiple "connection timed out" every few minutes). The last time I showed this to their maintenance crew, they only checked the speed with their phone and said that the connection was fine. However, the same issue keep happening over and over again. Moving into a new build home and I noticed they installed a Cat 5e data module. How do they work? Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:04 PM PDT So when I went through my walk through before my closing date, I noticed the network panel in the garage. When I had opened up the panel, I noticed there was a Cat 5e data module. As you can tell from the picture, there are two ethernet cables connected which run through out the house and are used as a wall plug.
Essentially I want to use the following setup: modem>unifi gateway>switch And for those of you wondering why I didn't get the builder to run more wall plugs throughout the house, my cousin is an electrician and he'll be able to add this in for me. [link] [comments] |
Best solution for home with metal studs Posted: 30 Oct 2020 06:29 PM PDT I just bought a new condo. It's not very big (each floor is ~550 square feet). The issues with my network have been incredibly frustrating. I first put my router in a room on the second floor. I got literally no signal right below it on the first floor. I'm pretty sure the issue is that my building has metal studs. I decided to get the Google nest router and a mesh access point. Long story short, that didn't work at all and Google sucks. I went back to my old Linksys router and put it on the landing right next to the stairs to get as much signal around the studs as possible. That works enough that I can browse the internet with about 40mbps, but I have Xfinity gigabit WiFi and I can't imagine that is the best I can get. Can anyone suggest a better solution? WiFi extenders seem to have mixed reactions and I don't really know what else to do. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:19 PM PDT I originally posted this last night in r/techsupport. I figured I might as well try here as well. OK, I am at my wit's end. So hopefully someone here can come up with something I haven't thought of. Here's some backstory. Back in April or so of this year, I started having mass internet disconnects. Anywhere from 5 to 40 a day. I would watch my modem's lights and all but the power button, and maybe a couple others would all go off, then come back on slowly. As if the modem was resetting. This happened all the time, but never with any discernible pattern. The internet would only be off for maybe 2 minutes at a time. (Unless it went off again while it was coming back online) Well, I got a new modem from my cable provider, but the issue persisted. I then had 3 techs come to my house to check my signal for noise. No one could ever figure out the issue, but since they all knew me and I was a good customer, they went out of their way to help me. One technician completely tore off the box on my house and installed a new one, completely with new hardware. I also had a tech give me about 100 ft of their cable. Which I then ran myself to my modem. I THEN had 2 techs come out and run a whole new cable from the pole to my house. The problems stopped until about 2-3 weeks ago. I am now dealing with the same issue again. Although not as often. But again, it's random. It's happened 6 times or so in the past 2.5 hours. And again, only for about 2 minutes at a time. About a week ago, a tech came, and after checking my signal, and noting that it is 100% perfect. There is absolutely no noise on my line, he gave me a new modem. This is now my 4th modem I've had some April or so. The problem persisted on them all. So about a week ago I started noticing some errors in Event Viewer that I'd never seen before. Netwtw08 - "7021 - Connection telemetry fields and analysis usage" e1dexpress - "The description for Event ID 27 from source e1dexpress cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (7) I219-V The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table" Since these were new to me, I decided that maybe somehow my PC was the issue. I have no idea how a Windows 10 desktop PC can make a modem reset, but this is how bad it had gotten. I started tinkering with drivers, including downloading new ones, rolling back to older ones, disabling, enabling... everything I could think of. I have since reset Windows 10 (reinstalled but I saved my personal files), bought a brand new network card (and disabled the onboard Ethernet AND wifi), and gotten a new cable because why not. The problem is still happening. When i got the new network card, the e1dexpress error stopped. (because that Ethernet adapter is now disabled), but now I get this error: e1i65x64 - "Intel(R) Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter Network link is disconnected." and then: e1i65x64 - "Intel(R) Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter Network link has been established at 1Gbps full duplex." I know what they are, and the often occur within 10 seconds of each other. I also have a lot of "DNC Client Events", usually within a minute of the e1i65x64 errors. Obviously when my internet goes down. Before the modem I have now, I had an awesome Tecnicolor modem that had 10 lights on it. It was super nice to be able to see the lights and try to figure out what was going on. The one I have now is a Hitron, with 1 fucking light. The light changes colors, but I'm not 100% sure what they all mean. This has been so frustrating for me. My desktop PC is hardwired. But this affects everything basically. This affects everything on wifi as well. Does anyone have any idea of what i can do. I've run out of ideas. Edit 1: As an addition to this post, this is what my Event Viewer looks like. It is 22:55 as I post this. About 2 hours from my opening post. Edit 2: UPDATE: I had an idea this morning that it could be related to my UPS's battery being dead. I bought a new (small) UPS and hooked everything up to it. And it's still doing it. I think I just used up my last idea. :( [link] [comments] |
Century Link - upgrade router/modem? Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:18 PM PDT I have Century Link service. 40 down, 5 up, $40 a month. Our wired connection gets the full speed fine. Wireless is pitiful (~5 down avg? In plain view of the router). We have the C1100Z router/modem, and I've heard it could be the culprit for terrible WiFi speeds. Century link of course says I need to upgrade and buy something new from them. Devices connected to wireless; Doorbell, garage opener, thermostat, sprinkler timer, TV, two phones, two laptops. 1) I've heard I can buy a new router and use that for theoretically better WiFi. Is that true with the C1100Z device I have? 2) would it be better to simply upgrade to a better modem/router? 3) How do I know what's compatible with my existing service? 4) they offer a 100 Mbps plan for $10 more a month.. I'm not looking to upgrade now, but may want that option, and don't want to get something now that I'd have to replace then. Is that possible? ... I feel lost on this subject, but don't want to get suckered in by century link. [link] [comments] |
Using Cox panoramic Wi-Fi modem router combo or waiting two weeks to buy the Arris 3.1? Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:28 PM PDT I just moved and the only thing available in my apartment is Cox. I was able to get a free upgrade to their 500 mbps and a free panoramic Wi-Fi cable modem router combo. I'm still setting up my apartment and haven't had a moment to dive in to their gear. Basically I'm coming from having a TP-Link VPN router, TP-Link switch, Motorola modem, and ASUS access point. I'm not too worried about not using any of my gear, but I'd like discrete components because it made networking a little easier in my last place. Basically I'm trying to figure out if there's a downside to using the Cox gear. If there is a built-in VPN, or I am able to attach my tplink VPN to a LAN port to see if that would work, and/or turn off the Wi-Fi and use my own Wi-Fi on the other side of the VPN. These are all questions that perhaps can't be answered specifically, but I'm looking for opinions. I'm not extremely knowledgeable about VPNs, but if I use one that links to the registered Cox modem/router does that render the VPN useless? I mean the Cox gear is registered to my port. And for that matter if I get my own modem, I have to register the serial number with Cox anyways. So I'm just trying to make sure that what I'm doing on my side of the VPN is protected at the most amateur level. I'm not trying to do anything crazy but take advantage of the VPN. Running Unraid with Radarr is my goal. [link] [comments] |
Need help with SP-AC2015 router Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:23 PM PDT Hello, I got new Spectrum internet with 400 Mbps download speed. The modem was provided by Spectrum and I have my own router - SP-AC2015 from Sprint/Asus. This is a brand new, out-of-the-box router. I have used two different cables, both Cat 5e. Here are the speed test results: Modem -> Yellow_cable -> PC = 400+ Mbps Modem -> Black_cable -> PC = 400+ Mbps Modem -> Yellow_cable -> Router -> Black_cable -> PC = 60-92 Mbps Modem -> Black_cable -> Router -> Yellow_cable -> PC = 60-92 Mbps Model -> Black_cable -> Router -> PC via WiFi = 60-102 Mbps Model -> Yellow_cable -> Router -> PC via WiFi = 60-102 Mbps I am using both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels separately. Pretty much the same results. So I have ruled out cables and the modem. The culprit seems to be the router, which is pretty locked-down by Sprint and has heavy QoS. I have tried to disable QoS through telnet, but that did not help. Any other ideas? Many thanks! P.S. I am not interested in "jail-breaking" the router. [link] [comments] |

I moved into a new house and am trying to convert phone line to Ethernet Posted: 30 Oct 2020 02:11 PM PDT I just moved into a new house that was built in 1988. I opened up some of the phone lines, and I'm guessing there is CAT5 in there. It's a gray wire with 4 twisted pairs (8 wires total). I've been reading a bunch of stuff in this forum and trying to watch some videos as well. I haven't found a "phone box" like is shown here: https://a.wholelottanothing.org/2019/04/13/converting-phone-lines-to-ethernet-in-newer-homes/ I can't find where all the phone lines terminate. Is it possible they are all just daisy-chained together? If they are daisy-chained, is it possible to get a quick home Ethernet system using the phone line? EDIT: Typo, its 4 twisted pairs. EDIT2: Found the cable. It's this type: https://www.prestigespecialties.com/products/AT-T-O-Dd-Diw-4-24-Ul-Type-Cmr-Cable/567124127 [link] [comments] |
Not getting the speed that’s being advertised Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:57 PM PDT So I have the Netgear Ac1740 R6400 it says that it support gig speed. What am I doing wrong. Cat5e patch cables Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:56 PM PDT So I'm pretty new to networking and I wanted to explore making my own patch cables. So I went to lowes and got 100ft of the grey southwire 24awg cat5e cable, the ideal ft-45 crimper, and their ideal modular feed through rj45 connectors. The issue im having is some of the cables I make I can get 100mbps connection, and some don't work at all. I think I've narrowed it down (with Googles help) to it being solid core wire instead of stranded. Or it could be the cheapest crimping tool they had. If it is the wire how do I tell if its stranded or not without cutting it open. And if its the crimper what do you guys recommend? If I'm way off on both those guesses then any advice is appreciated. Cheapest Gigabit home networking Posted: 30 Oct 2020 03:48 PM PDT We recently got Gigabit internet over fiber(940 down, 50 up) but we don't really have a way to use it because of the shitty ISP router. I can't run cables without an electrician, and can't use MoCA because we concealed all our dangling unused coaxial cables when we replaced our flooring, so what is the cheapest way to get Gigabit networking to my desktop computer? What are the best settings for an Asus AX88U? Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:24 PM PDT I just got this router and there are some settings I changed to make my ping slightly better. Powerline adapter quality shifts constantly Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:14 PM PDT I have two DHP-600AV powerline adapters. They shift from green to red light all the time, but they never go in between (amber). Any idea what might be causing this? Would buying a more expensive powerline adapter help? Does this model just suck? [link] [comments] |
Eero/Nest Wifi For routing only? Posted: 30 Oct 2020 06:32 PM PDT Do you think it's okay to use a single Eero or Nest WiFi router for routing purposes only? I can't find any info on this. I already have a couple Ruckus access points and just want a router that can support 1 gig up/down. The main reason is that I really like the Eero app and how easy it is to see all the devices and manage them. Would something like this work out if I can just disable the WiFi on the Eero? A wireless extender/access point with ethernet out Posted: 30 Oct 2020 06:01 PM PDT Hello all. I don't exactly know what the device would be called but I have a router/switch combo from my ISP which sits in a different room. I have an office in which the wireless signal is great but I have one of those internet-connected desk phones which I need to use for work. In order to achieve this, I need a device that picks up my wireless connection and has an ethernet out port. Is there such a device? What would I need to look for? For availability purposes, I live in the UK. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:35 PM PDT Hey, I have a new construction home with CAT6 running from each room into a patch panel in the utility room. I was going to connect a switch to the patch panel, a router to the switch, and modem to the router. Do I need a specific type of cable to do that or does any generic ethernet cable work? Also, can I connect a switch to any of the ethernet cables in the bedrooms or is this considered daisy-chaining and a big no-no? I want to connect a switch to an upstairs office so I can connect multiple computers in it. So it would look like switch -> patch panel -> switch -> router -> modem. Lastly, does it matter where I connect an access point? I was going to connect it directly to the router. So the router would output to a switch and an access point. Or does this wrong to do? Thanks, [link] [comments] |
Best solution against power outage for cable modem gateway + router Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:03 AM PDT Hi, Now that I work from home, I notice that I have many more power outages than I thought during the day. they usually last between 30min to 3 hours. I'm looking for a good solution to be able to be still connected to the internet while working on my laptop wirelessly, so... just having power for my cable modem (Hitron CODA 4680) and my router (RT-AC68u). The best solution I have found yet would be plugging those two to an APC BR1500G (around 340 or our tiny canadian dollars), but as I know absolutely nothing about this type of hardware, I want to get advice before I click "purchase" on amazon :) So my questions are: - If what I want is to just power the wireless access to the internet, as I work on laptops with batteries, is my best option (for that type of budget) to purchase a UPC ? or would I be best served with a rechargeable battery like a Jackery power supply which, for the same price, seems to give me much longer power ? - If the UPC is the best solution, then is there anything better (i.e. longer battery time, which is what I'm interested in) for an equivalent price ? Thank you very much! :) [link] [comments] |
Need help troubleshooting my Cable internet. Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:34 PM PDT tl,dr at the bottom. So a little back ground:We moved into a new house a year ago. Found that Wave Broadband (WBB) services the area and provided upto 100meg speeds. Its either that or 5meg DSL.. (no thanks) Call WBB out and as it turns out the house never got a line ran from the main road to the house... No Problem WBB said that they will be able to do it for free, since it shows that the lot should have had one anyway.. Sweet. done in Feburary 2020 For the first 2-4 weeks everything seemed fine. Only the minor issues, that was resolved with a modem reboot.Ever since we started having constant sporadic disconnects that last all morning.. sometimes the mornings are good and then the afternoons are bad. Then somedays are perfectly good.?? I've had WBB come out a couple of times (takes about a week for someone to come out after making a call and each time they come out its a "good day") While onsite they check the line from in the house and from the street and say everything is good. I pulled the logs from my modem, Brand new Arris SB6190, when it was having the constant reconnects and showed the tech. They just shrugged it off. Said that the "area I'm in has old infrastructure. And that it's susceptible to interference." They said for example someone is plugging a device into a coaxial jack in a house in the area that is causing issues with the internet signal.... ? Is this even a thing? Ill post the log from my modem below.Anyone out there that can decypher and let me know if the issues are on the ISP?I Work from home, like many do now, and have been surviving using the hotspot on my phone.
The same thing happens over and over until it finally makes a connection. Sometimes it holds steady for the day and sometimes, after a few minutes it will start the reconnection cycle again and again for hours. Modem reboots do nothing. tl,dr:New House, new coax line ran from the street to the house.Get constant modem reconnects. ISP take about a week to make a house call and each time they are there everything "just works." showed a tech the logs of the reconnects (See above) and they shrugged it off. Difficult to work from home without internet. :( [link] [comments] |
