Coax cable into modem is hot to the touch, could that cause drops? Posted: 01 Sep 2020 03:04 PM PDT So I have an optimum TM1602 modem, and my internet drops once a day, always between 10:30am - 12:30pm. I've been looking for causes, and have narrowed it down to 3 choices: The head of the coax cable connected to the modem is hot to the touch, as well as the coax port sticking out of the modem when I unscrew it. I've tried to use a different coax cable I bought off amazon, and that one gets hot to the touch as well, not as hot, but still pretty hot. None of the other coax connections (such as my cable boxes) are hot whatsoever, only my modem. So, the question I wanna ask really is: Could the coax cable be overheating and that's what's causing the drops? Would that be a modem problem? It takes 15 minutes to reconnect normally. Thank you. Reminder that most home networking equipment can run on USB power. Posted: 01 Sep 2020 05:39 AM PDT Most of your home networking equipment like your routers, your Phillip Hue boxes etc run on either 5 Volts 2 Amperes or 12 Volts 2.5 Ampere, and you can swap out using several AC power supplies on several outlets in favor or one or two 4Port USB charger to run these on. Edit: I feel like adding early on that the type of USB charger we're talking about is something like this, this or this. The last image is of a 4 Port charger capable of 40 watts. Your typical home eletronic devices will use something close to 12 watt. This post is not suggesting you use a powered USB hub or similar. "USB power" is not just 5V 1A, it's anything up to 100W, even 200W depending on the charger and cable these days. The Edgerouter X router requires 12V 0.5 Amps and you can achieve that with a step up USB cable that gives you the required voltage, and just plug it into any USB charger that can output enough amps. Some math required /s You can search up the various cables and plugs on amazon, ebay etc and as long as the polarity is correct, inner and outer diameter of the plug fits and the Voltage is correct it will work. Today's USB chargers will usually support several amps and some have multiple quick-charge ports that allow you to charge 2+ devices up to 2.5 amps at the same time. You save on space which is very convenient and gets rid of the clutter of multiple adapters taking up outlet space. The cables for 5V usually look like normal USB cables, like this. For 12V the base of the USB-A plug needs the step-up converter for the 5V>12V convertion and usually look like this. I've gotten a rid of all the old AC adapters under 12V in my home and just keep a small box with various USB cables with different plugs. I run a 4Port USB charger that supports quick charge(2.5A) on all ports just to not risk overloading the charger and futureproofs should I plug in a device that needs more juice, and it uses 1 outlet vs 4 for each device. Also means I can add another suite of devices without needing to think about where to put and manage all the ac adapters. Makes things like adding led lights to your setups as well because they too usually run on 5V 1.5A or something similar, because you don't have to think about saving space with outlets. Edit: It seems a lot of the people in this sub is unaware that USB chargers are literally AC adapters with ports. Before you start saying this post and info is bad or false, remember that your AC Adapter for your specific little home networking device is likely using a 2 wire 26 or 28awg cable that is non-shielded. Changing that out with a USB adapter and a USB cable-to-plug that fits the device that runs on the same specifications does not cause a fire hazard if your USB adapter can take at or more than the required spec of the device you want to power. AC Adapters aren't magical artifacts. They're just converting AC power to your DC device. USB chargers do the exact same thing, and after often more robust due to needing to support multiple outputs and multiple devices at the same time, for any length of time. Before you go ahead and post or follow the suggestions in this post, make sure you're using USB AC adapters (USB power supplies, USB Chargers, powerbanks whatever you want to call it or use) that are not the cheapest you can find, use something branded like Belkin, Anker and similar reputable brands. You need to make sure it actually can support the load you want to put on it. If you don't know how to look at the original AC adapter and read off "5V 0.5A" and look at your USB charger and make sure it says the same or more, I don't know how to help you and you should notify those around you to not let you close to any electronics in your home as you might be a hazard yourself. Noticed the Upcoming TP-Link Omada hardware is showing on the UK Site Posted: 01 Sep 2020 06:07 PM PDT Seems I've been waiting for this for all of 2020, as I watched the release dates slip from Q1 to almost Q4. Every once in awhile I'll Google and see if any new info out there and stumbled on this: https://www.tp-link.com/uk/solution/omada-sdn/ Sorry if this is old news! I'm enjoying my Omada APs , but figured I may try their new router along with a WiFi6 AP. Hopefully will have some nice SQM/QoS/etc capabilities like FlexQoS cake or something. Currently running an asus 86u as a router only with FlexQoS. I have a 400/30 connection and would get bad buffer bloat. PC games like pubg and rocket league were unplayable with one or worse two Disney+ 4k HDR streams going. I enabled FlexQoS with my Merlin software and that seems to have worked. It would still be cool to go all Omada! Hopefully their product owners are thinking about the prosumer segment that wants business class at home. Seems everyone and their mom is on the Ubuiquiti train. [link] [comments] |
10GB SFP+ Equipped Small Switch Posted: 01 Sep 2020 06:13 PM PDT Does anyone know of a low port count (under 12) gigabit switch with SFP+ for 10GB uplink? The Zyxel XGS1010-12 seems to be pretty much what I'm looking for, but am wondering what else might be out there? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
How to connect these to my cable box? Posted: 01 Sep 2020 05:13 PM PDT http://imgur.com/gallery/JD0g3bO I bought the house and the rooms were all wired with ethernet ports. The ethernet wires are all run outside my house though and then just wrapped up. What do I need to connect these to my cable line right there beside it? Do I need an ethernet switch? And if so is there one designed for a coax input that I can just put in that grey cable box? Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
Worth running squid or pihole at home? Posted: 01 Sep 2020 04:58 PM PDT Was interested in running some sort of transparent ad blocker. can you guys help me with this problem? Posted: 01 Sep 2020 04:23 PM PDT basically i was thinking of building my first pc and I'd place it in my room. the problem is that, since i have a kind of big home, my wifi doesn't really reach my room: to be precise it does reach but the connection is stable for 20 to 30 minutes, than it became really unusable for like 2 or 3 minutes (it doesn't actually lad anything) and than it goes back to normal, infact, now that i use a laptop, i use it only in the living room were the modem is placed. i'm not really into this stuff so i don't know if this is a common problem or if it's easy to resolve but i do know that it's a 5Ghz wave-thing and that i don't have any lan port in my room. can this be solved by buying like a repeater reapeter with a lan output, placing it in my room and plug my pc to that? i'll appreciate any advice since buying a pc without having a good place for it is kinda useless. please tell me if giving any more info could help in any way. New house, wire ethernet or get cable first? Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:59 PM PDT Looking at buying my first house, internet and tv setup is basically my first priority I want to get my house wired with ethernet is it better to get this done before I have Fios come in or after? [link] [comments] |
Is it worth it to upgrade from Cable to Fiber Internet? Posted: 01 Sep 2020 11:15 AM PDT Currently with Rogers a Canadian cable company who provides internet over coax. My plan is 500 down 20 up, with a latency around 11 based on speedtest.net. I pay around $37.27 after taxes modem included. My plan is good until February and then I'd have to renegotiate my deal. A local provider is installing FTTH in my neighbourhood. It's a GPON technology and I'd get 1000 down/50 up. The cost of this is $56.50 After taxes and then I'd rent the modem for $5.65 after taxes. I'd use an ONT Modem. Is it worth it to upgrade to the local fiber provider or keep what I have? [link] [comments] |
Question about CAT 7 and flat cables Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:44 PM PDT So I know that it isn't an "official" specification of Ethernet, but I was able to get a BOGO free 15 ft amazon basics cat 7 cable. ($8.50 total) on Amazon. My question is, should I be alright with it? I have a gigabit connection, and am using it to replace a cheap cat 5e cable that came with my router. I don't believe it is one of those bullshit cat 3 relabeled cables, as I was getting about 650 MBPS on my Xbox (was getting about 550 with the 5e). I hear people VERY against CAT7 so I just wanted a second opinion. Also second quick question, is it worth it to replace a flat 50 ft cable with a round one, if I get a good deal? Near the router, the current one is clustered with the cables behind the TV, and am unsure if it is causing interference. (This was the cable I got by the way: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZTR59CJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8GWtFb6SCDD88) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2020 10:59 AM PDT Hello, Not an expert in networking (obviously), but since COVID has put a strain in my home network (2 teens taking online classes) I bought 3 deco dishes (one deco is connected to the fiber optics source router) and 3 tp link extenders to cover my entire house. I also have and Orbi RBR40 with 2 satellites (It was our main router but it is not enough in this situation), which now I configured in AP mode and using the Deco as router, should I remove the Orbi from the network (and create an alternative network) or it will work fine in AP mode, pros and cons? Thanks for any help, it is been hell configuring the house network, since I am not a very experienced in networking. [link] [comments] |
how can i use a PC as Ethernet switch ? Posted: 01 Sep 2020 11:38 AM PDT firstly sorry if my English not good. - the company i work for contains 20 PC's all connected directly to the unmanaged switch then to the router. the problem is some employees consuming the whole monthly internet quota by the first week by downloading movies and games etc. and they all denies doing that. so after searching online for hours for solution i got a program can help "LANGuardian" but it require managed switch to create a mirror port on it but unfortunately that model of switch not available. so 1- can i assign a PC with windows 10 to do this job by attaching two Ethernet on it and then connect one to the switch and the other to the router to monitoring the network packets? 2- and if that possible what's the configuration for this PC to do such a job ? Asus ZenWifi Mesh System - Wired Speed SLOW!!! Pls Help Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:05 PM PDT Hi all - So after over 20 hours with Spectrum dealing with this new GIG speed they have (well only 940, but whatever), I finally am seeing GIG speeds at the router level. There is some loss over WiFi, but very few of my devices in the house can even handle Wifi 6 right now, so no issue (usually seeing about 500 down and 40 up). So the problem - I decided that I needed to have the full speeds in my office for a few different reasons, and so plugged the wired connection into my 16 port GIG netgear switch, which is coming directly off of my ZenWifi Router (the one acting like the router - had to switch back to this from the 88x because it was a mess and still too early of an Asus product I think). Anyway, when I went from WIRELESS to WIRED, my speeds went from above (500+ down - 40 up) to 45 down, and 25 up. WTH? Wired speeds slower than wireless??? No way! But yes indeed. I've played with all the settings that I usually would, ensuring NAT is on, flipped on the Jumbo frames on the switch control and got 0 packet loss on pings, ensured QoS was off, etc. Nothing. Still horrible speeds. Any ideas? I'm at a loss for wire WIRED would be so much slower than WIRELESS. I'm testing on my MacBook Pro, which yes, has a GIG WIRED speeds with my adapter. Someone smarter than me can surely help. PLEASE [link] [comments] |
Terrible internet speeds (less than 1.5mbps) Posted: 01 Sep 2020 06:49 PM PDT So me and my brother have the same PCs (I'll give a picture of specs) and we use a power-line Ethernet system, he gets 25 mbps while I rarely get 1.5 mbps. I've tried installing all drivers and we have the exact same Ethernet cord and everything. We've tested swapping Ethernet cords and Ethernet power line adapters too. Nothing seems to change the results. Anyone know how to help (AGAIN, we have the same exact pc build and types of power line adapter and everything.) [link] [comments] |
Xfinity Router + Extender Setup Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:39 PM PDT Looking to get some advice on what to do with my current setup and possibly moving to unlimited data for Comcast. I managed to go well over the 1.2TB datacap last month (about 1.6) luckily I still had my 1 courtesy month so i didn't get charged. Xfinity offers 2 unlimited data options, an additional $25/month with their Xfi Modem/Router, or $30/month to keep using my own. Currently I've got a Netgear CM1000 and a Linksys WRT-32x setup roughly in the center of my house. I've got fairly strong signal everywhere excluding the far end of my basement and out in the garage which I'd like to fix but isn't a major priority. I'd also like to monitor device data usage to charge my roommate extra if he's causing the data spikes but the only way I've found to do that is to flash the router with DD-WRT which seems to be a bit of a pain. Would you guys recommend keeping my current setup and just adding the unlimited data, or just biting the bullet and going full into the xfinity ecosystem? I've heard good things about the new XB7 and just wanted to get some second opinions. [link] [comments] |
I Dont Know Why My PC Has Bad Internet! Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:36 PM PDT I've Spent Weeks Trying to solve this and it results in me not being able to play online and etc it says i'm running at 57 mbps but... From UK, fiber cable, around 7 devices connected to router, all get 50+ mbps when doing speed test so only this device (PC) im in my room directly above the router hope the info helps [link] [comments] |

Bricked Linksys WRT54GL Help &Identification Posted: 01 Sep 2020 05:58 PM PDT Hello, I picked up a WRT54GL v1.1 for pretty cheap off of ebay, and it arrived bricked. I know there's multiple ways to unbrick an old router like this and install 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT, but I'm having trouble getting this router to respond at all. Upon receiving power almost all the lights blink endlessly except for the DMZ and WLAN light, which never blinks. I've already attempted a 30/30/30 reset to no avail. Anybody have any advice on what I should do? I also noticed some interesting differences with the router compared to others of the same model, such as the button on the left of the router that normally has the Cisco logo on it only has a logo that says "Secure Easy Setup". Is this possibly a counterfeit router, or just a different model? The serial number is CL7C6P802329. [link] [comments] |
Internet is not working with university issued PC, I have tried everything Posted: 01 Sep 2020 05:58 PM PDT My university issued desktop is not loading web pages, or anything to do with the internet. It might be good to mention that it is a Canadian computer with a Canadian VPN. I am in the US. The university issued desktop uses a VPN called GlobalProtect. At first, I thought that was the issue (and it still might be). I am unable to log on to global connect, it comes up with the error "no network connection". This is not the issue. IT said they can remote in through teamviewer and fix this. Right now, just need to be able to have wifi. At first the computer would not let me log in at all. Then, the IT department gave me the local admin password and I got in. The internet is hooked up to an ethernet cord that goes to my router. The internet is connected, it is connected, it says it is connected, but upon attempting to load the webpage it does not work. At first, it was a DNS error, not the troubleshooter says that the device is set up correctly (although I think it has something to do with the DNS) Last night, I took the entire PC to my boyfriends house, and low and behold, it worked immediatley. Global protect still would not connect, but I could still acess the internet. He also has comcast but his dad uses global protect and is like a genius at that stuff, I wasnt suprised it worked. I took the computer home, and it didnt work. I figured that it must have been the Eero mesh network, so I went and bought a new router and….. IT WORKED. Well, it did work. My brother woke up this morning and everything was back to square one, we couldnt load a webpage. Now, here we are, stuck. This stupid thing will not work. Here is a list of the things I have tried:
Specs and equipment list: Motorola Modem - Model MB8600 Netgear Router (purchased last night, worked for a bit) - AC1600 Dell 3630 workstation Service provider - Comcast We are now wondering if it is the modem blocking it, but it dosent make since because it worked last night. I can provide any more information needed, any help would be amazing. Thank you so much!!! [link] [comments] |
Factory Reset Sagemcom Fast 5260 to remove openrg.home external management Posted: 01 Sep 2020 11:54 AM PDT I have Sagemcom Fast 5260 router and cannot configure it because when I hit 192.168.1.1, it leads to optimum.net instead of taking me to the internal admin panel. I believe with factory reset, the external management will be removed and firmware admin panel will be available to use. Does anyone have experience with such scenario? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Sep 2020 05:49 PM PDT Hi, I have what I think is a simple problem but I am struggling to find a good solution. I've got gigabit internet and an ASUS RT-AX88U router connected to it. Currently all of my devices are connected to this and I have no issues with connectivity through the house using WiFi. However, I do have several devices (NAS, VM server etc.) that have wired connections to the router. Partly, this is to ensure speed/reliable connection and partly because they don't have wifi. What I would like to do is take some of these devices and move them to a separate room and have them connect to a device in the room via wired connection. That device (be it mesh, router or whatever) would connect to the main router using Wifi-6 (ideally). Network, DHCP etc. would be shared and the second router would be more of a repeater. I know there are several potential issues with this in related to speed and also latency. However, the devices I am looking to move are generally very low traffic and don't generate a lot of activity. If they all happen to share the same WiFi 6 connection then it is not going to be a huge issue. I originally looked at WiFi mesh devices but none of these seem to offer LAN ports. Then I started to look at Wifi6 routers but many, such as the TP-Link AX1500 don't support WDS and from my understanding this is something I need in order to have the router in my second room share the connection via wifi from the main router? Actually, if WDS is repeating the same SSID then I also don't need this. If it's a separate wifi network on the second router then I don't mind as the priority is the wired connections. Any help or suggestions on not too expensive products would be very appreciated! Thanks [link] [comments] |
Need help setting up Home network (2 routers) Posted: 01 Sep 2020 05:44 PM PDT Hello, So I'm currently trying to set up some networking in my house. My goal is to have my modem in my basement and my WiFi router upstairs on the first floor central of my house but also have an unmanaged switch in the basement to connect to LAN ports I have in the house. I bought a Netgear AC1000 router to be in the basement to provide DHCP through the house with it's WiFi turned off and have a Netgear Nighthawk X6 for my Wifi Router. What I need help with is how to configure the routers to work in this capacity. I'm unsure of what settings to change to have the WiFi X6 router pull the DHCP from the AC1000 router. Extending Home Network to a deadzone - looking for advise Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:42 PM PDT Hello, a newbie here. So I am trying to extend my internet to a deadzone in my house, I need to have wifi and multiple ethernet ports available in that area. The connection speed needs to be as fast as my main router. So I was looking for solutions, the solution that I found is to get a switch and access point and connect those to the main router to extend my network over the deadzone. Also I want to make sure that the solution that I go for does not create a separate new network, to prevent multiple network management. I was wondering is this the best option? Do you have any suggestion/alternatives? Any product suggestion for the solution? My internet info: ISP: Fios Verizon, Speed : gigabit connection Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
