An example of what can be done with linux and ingenuity Posted: 03 Aug 2020 07:33 AM PDT Using a 1930 teletype as a linux terminal I'm sure this has been shared before, but I've only just become aware of it. Pretty advanced project, I imagine, but looks like fun. As a noob, it gives me hope and motivation so that one day I might be capable of completing fun challenges like this. Distro in this instance is Crunchbang [link] [comments] |

Applications are too dark to use. Posted: 03 Aug 2020 11:38 AM PDT I've downloaded manjaro i3 edition and have been playing around with that for a while now. I've noticed that a lot of the applications I use are incredibly dark to the point of being nearly unusable. here's an example. Where is this setting defined at? I've tried getting rid of the Xresources file, but that seemed to only affect urxvt. CodeBlocks was still unusably dark. I should mention that I've also installed the gnome desktop environment, and these settings do not seem to have an effect there. However, I'd like to use these applications in my current window manager if possible. [link] [comments] |
As a social media marketer, can I learn coding and contribute to open source? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:19 PM PDT I am a social media marketer and I earn through that. But I love to code, not to make money because I believe that if I did that for money then my focus would be to just earn from that software company by providing services to others and not to contribute to open source as I am passionate it. Just to get an idea that
In both cases, I am contributing part-time. So if I could earn through contribution then how? (Just to let you know I am just getting started in coding). If not then answer those above two questions? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
What should I know (and do) before switching to Linux? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:02 AM PDT Just do not tell me the basic things like "It is not Windows" or "Start with beginner-friendly distros ". 'Cause I already know them. [link] [comments] |
How come Gparted can only resize partitions with an unnallocated space immediately adjacent to it? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:58 PM PDT I made space to resize a partition, but I can't allocate the empty space due to it not being right next to the partition. How do I fix this? thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:10 AM PDT Is there any software suite or packages to make use of pgp that integrates well with file-managers and other apps? Asking for a older person who is very new to the linux world. [link] [comments] |
What does encryption do other than just add an additional password step? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:45 PM PDT I use Pop_OS, which when installed defaults to including encryption. You set a password for that as well as a user password. Then, when booting up the computer you essentially get 2 login screens, one that requires the encryption password and one that requires the user password. Is there something else going on with the encryption step behind the scenes that is more than just creating an additional password requirement? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:26 PM PDT I working with Openstack and need a Windows server 2016 qcow2 format image. I found some great documentation which guided me to create a VM of Windows S 2016 and then use Cloudbase-Init to create the qcow2 file format. The thing is when everything was done I was left with a qcow file extension and not qcow2 and the article clearly shows they have a qcow2. I have googled and I understand that qcow2 is an updated file format from qcow but wanted to ask here if there is a way to make this qcow extension a qcow2. Any thoughts? (Maybe when creating the VM with Virtual Box there was a section to choose qcow2 and i chose qcow? Will go back and check.) Link to article I used: Create Windows Server Image For Openstack Thank you in advance. Edited a typo. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:42 AM PDT I recently installed Ubuntu (after much difficulty), but my laptop still directly boots into Windows. I have to press F11 during start-up and manually select Ubuntu. I tried to change the boot order using after which I ran again to check the boot order, and it did show Ubuntu first. Even after this, when I restart my laptop, it boots to Windows. When I ran efibootmgr again, Windows boot manager was back first. Fast boot is off on Windows. [link] [comments] |
Moving/Resizing partitions on Gparted (MX Linux) Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:41 PM PDT Alright so, I have Windows 10 and MX Linux v17.1 installed in the same HDD. 4 primary partitions (one extended for Linux). I need to extend the sda6 (ext4) partition which is the one that is running Linux because I only assigned 6GB to it, here is the problem: moving partitions scares me a bit. Free space is located in sda1 (ntfs), and sda2 is assigned for Windows. I have been thinking about resizing sda1, then adding unallocated space to sda2, doing the same over and over until I add the space to sda6. Sounds stupid and also dangerous. Should I run Gparted on a booteable CD and move the entire partition to the right then add it to sda6? What about the process, any recommendations? Here's an image of Gparted. Thanks! Posted: 03 Aug 2020 06:19 AM PDT Hi, My laptop constantly runs really hot. I openened the housing, got rid of the dust buildup and installed ubuntu 20 on it, that helped a little. Still running over 90 deg sometimes, so I played around with the power options and it helped a little more. Can I somehow limit the CPU usage to keep the damn thing from overheating? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:17 AM PDT While using my linux box, no updates running, just working on it it shut off. Motherboard beeped and it started saying surge protect, hit F1 to configure bios. I did, nothing changed, select drive to boot from, starts to work. Prompt password to decrypt drive (my drives are all encrypted), it starts to boot then poif, it hard resets, the cycle continues. Never happened before. Any ideas/suggestions? [link] [comments] |
USB Clone / backup for use on other systems regardless of hardware? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:47 AM PDT I understand that there are Live USB operating systems which one plugs into a computer and can run the operating system, but is there a way to savable "portable" operating system also capable of readjusting system settings depending on which hardware is being used? For example, if I have to travel and can't bring my desktop, I can save the current state of the operating system / clone it so I can boot it to a laptop (it will be less powerful due to different hardware) and vice versa when I'm done with whatever new work I have done (can save and be used back on the desktop / "update" the desktop OS). How do I launch steam (wine) using arguments? Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:44 AM PDT On Linux Mint, I installed Wine-stable using the Software Manager, then installed Windows Steam through Wine. Now it launches fine, but the store and library pages just have black screens. I know a fix which is to launch Steam with the arguments [link] [comments] |
