What is the easiest way to test Vulkan on my PC? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:00 AM PDT vulkaninfo shows some info. Is there something graphical that I can run to show that my PC is really vulkan capable? Installing DOTA2 is not the ideal way due to the huge download. [link] [comments] |

Can I just extract a .deb file and attempt to get the app running on a non Debian system? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 10:54 AM PDT If I am not on a debian system with apt or dpkg can I just extract it, extract the data tar and then run the app from a some directory? If one is on a metered connection: Which distro consumes the least amount of data? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 02:00 PM PDT 1) Generally speaking: Do rolling release distros use more data? 1a) Does Arch use more than Debian or other branches? 1b) Can you skip updates and just catch the next one or do they add up cumulatively? 2) I'd guess a useful heuristic would be the size of the distro itself right? (Leaving aside the programs you installed yourself) Thanks in advance. Sidenote: I read Windows 10 was designed to be constantly connected to the net and that's why it's such a massive data hog? Manjaro installed but not accessible... Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:31 AM PDT I followed this link to install Manjaro alongside my Windows 10 on 128GB partion with 8GB swap. After installation when I restarted, Windows 10 starts. There is no bootloader installed other than the already existing Windows default. And it gives no option to access Manjaro. Using HP pavilion. PS: I'm not a tech savvy guy, I just hate Windows Updates. Please use simple terminology (if possible). [link] [comments] |
Advice for running a persistent version of linux from a usb Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:17 AM PDT Hello, I'm looking for general advice on running a portable and persistent linux from a usb. My goal is simply to have a portable and persistent linux on a usb. I mostly want this for coding (intellij and vscode are a few examples of what I need), but if I am allowed to dream big I was hoping to run a few games on it (at a minimum counter-strike source + minecraft, ultimate goal dota2 or csgo though this is probably a stretch). I tried out Manjaro on a usb and it did not perform well. I installed it on a usb 3.1 (300mb/s) and even after updating (both the packages, through pacman, and the kernel) it still did not perform well. If you are want to know how installed it, I made a bootable version on one usb (which is a usb 2.0 runs better than the installed version on a 3.1), booted it up on my pc, then followed the installation wizard and installed it onto a second usb (the 3.1 that I mentioned earlier). So I wanted to see there is any advice anyone is willing to give me? Maybe there is another way I can go about putting manjaro on a usb. I am also open to trying a different distro, if anyone has a recommendation? I was actually considering trying Pop Os. If you are curious why I want to use a usb, well I have a 230 GB that I already had. Why do I want a portable version? I want it because I want the same os, with the same programs installed, that I can use on my laptop, desktop or computer that I may need to use. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jul 2020 12:12 PM PDT I changed the layout of qwerty to colemak and I am extremely happy. But as with something that was not well-established, problems emerged. Besides English, I use a different language, and in some applications such as Chrome and electron apps, the shortcuts differ depending on the layout. For example Ctrl+F On en, this works as it should. But on another layout it calls Ctrl+E. I have an idea how to get around this problem, when the ctrl key is held down, the system should hold the EN layout, when the key is released, the system should return the original layout. Does anyone have any idea how to implement this, script or something else? [link] [comments] |
Any software that tests the life of your battery? Posted: 28 Jul 2020 12:01 PM PDT I was wondering if there is any software that I can run that dose a stress test of some kind that will log as it goes so I can leave it running until the battery dies and see how long that takes bt reading the last line in the log or w/e... so I have something to compare my "battery tweaking" to latter on? My host file is blank... what should I put in it? Posted: 27 Jul 2020 08:30 PM PDT MY host file is completely blank... I seem to remember it looking kinda like this but I forget what to put in it... I know some of these values take the hostname.. but I can not seem to work out what as all the "host" file pages google find do not say how to make one from scratch only edit an existing one. Know how to access /etc/sysctl.conf ??? I have allocated huge pages too much! Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:59 AM PDT So I have ran sudo sysctl -w vm.nr_hugepages=1280 and sudo bash -c "echo vm.nr_hugepages=1280 >> /etc/sysctl.conf" a few times each. I apparently have allocated 124 out of 125 GB of ram somehow and need to access that file in order to hopefully undo whatever I've done. Please let me if you know how to access or fix what I've done. I am a bit new to Linux. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Jul 2020 08:55 AM PDT Hi all! I've been looking for a tutor to help me better understand some assignments from last semester. Due to COVID related complications, I received an incomplete for a Linux based course. This summer has been extremely stressful in balancing two jobs to pay for three summer courses. I literally only need to complete this course in order to graduate. I need to redo some assignments and redo some exam questions. If anyone is available, please message me! I have been having serious issues in avoiding things that are stressful (i.e. this course), so, having a tutor help me and motivate me would be great! I also want to pay whatever rates you charge, but the payments might be in installments because one of my jobs isn't paying me, (they furloughed the people who are in charge of payroll) while the other job is minimum wage. I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit to go to, but any help would be appreciated! Many thanks all! Edit: Mostly need help with Grep and Awk Patterns! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:19 AM PDT I was tasked to secure the whole elastic flow and was able to secure the logstash-elasticsearch-kibana flow. I'm now having some trouble encrypting filebeat to logstash (It's the last step). According to the "secure filebeat to logstash" page, I need .crt and .key configured on both ends. Problem is, that so far only Do I have to use these to file as if they're .crt and .key? Do I need to create additional files?
EDIT: I've created 3 files using the following commands: Then in logstash's conf: But when I start logstash, I'm getting an error for the certificates (this looks terrible on mobile): Did I miss something? Have I extracted the wrong certificates? Should I use a different method? Thanks ahead. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jul 2020 01:19 AM PDT I currently have 1 8GB stick of RAM in my computer that was purchased 2 years ago. I need to upgrade to 16GB - I'm regularly hitting over 85% usage. I was told that even if I purchase the exact same brand, there's a high likelihood that it won't be the same as brands often change manufacturers or the chips they use without changing their own model number. I also learned that pretty much all RAM is made by Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron - and it's really hard to find out which one is which. Some folks recommended I purchase a good price/reputable brand and go with it. I did but after a new distro install, I've had many total OS lockup/freezes requiring a physical power button restart and I cannot be sure it isn't the RAM. So I took it out today and am returning it. So, moving forward, would you go ahead and buy two 8GB RAM sticks to ensure no issues? I kind of hate to do that as it feels wasteful to lose a working memory stick. Would you try a different brand? I could get a Samsung branded RAM stick, which I'm told likely won't change over time. If it fails to be compatible, I suppose I could purchase a second and since it's Samsung, it should be the same as the first. I also wondered about just getting a 16gb RAM stick, figuring it's the same price as 2x/8GB and if it works with what I have, I now have 24gb usable RAM. If it doesn't, I take out the old stick. But, of course, I lose any ability for the RAM to run dual channel for faster speeds doing that. I don't know how much that really matters on a day to day basis. I'm not gaming on the computer. I use it mostly for a personal media home server. Any suggestions/advice would really help. I'm quite "gun-shy" after having that first RAM purchase fail. I can't be sure it's the problem but I've not yet had a lock-up yet since taking it out either. Hard to say what that means. Thanks so much for any help. System specs: Intel NUC 8i7BEH Core i7 8559u 4 core/8 thread processor 8GB RAM (currently), Corsair Vengeance (DDR4 2400mhz, CL17, 260pin SODIMM) Intel Iris 655 Graphics M.2 NVMe SSD (recent addition w/ the RAM that's going back, is now my primary drive) 2.5" SATA SSD (still has Linux Mint on it from initial install 2 years ago) USB 3.0 External HDDs The RAM that's going back in Patriot Viper Steel 2400mhz. It was rated very highly by pro reviewers and users. Intel said as long as the RAM size was the same (8gb/8gb, or 16gb/16gb) that it didn't matter if the timings and other specs were identical and it would run in dual-channel mode. Still don't know for sure if it was an issue for me at this point. [link] [comments] |
rEFInd not booting anymore on Macbook Pro Posted: 28 Jul 2020 04:29 AM PDT I dual booted Linux Mint onto my 2011 Macbook Pro using rEFInd as the boot manager. I partitioned 20 gb for Linux Mint. It worked fine for a few weeks but then when I started up my Macbook one day, it booted straight to the OSX. So I tried to access the startup manager by pressing and holding the option key on startup, but it didn't work. It went straight to the user login page again. So I turned off my mac again and tried resetting the nvram by pressing and holding option, command, p, and r. Again, the computer ignored my action and went straight to the login page. Can anybody help? Is this what they call a boot coup? [link] [comments] |
