LF (2) Budget laptops for kids - school and minecraft :)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 06:23 PM PDT

My 2 kids (5 and 7) will be doing complete remote schooling this year for obvious reasons. I'm looking at budget laptops for them, but I'm only really familiar with desktops and never at this low end.

I want something that has Windows 10 and not a chromebook so they can also play Minecraft as well.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Ideally sub $400
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
It will most likely stay on their desk in their room, so less of an issue
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Lighter the better since they are kids
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Minecraft currently, lego games
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Minecraft, 30fps would be fine.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Open
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Just looking for something affordable that will last them a while. Upgradable RAM & storage a plus

    [USA] [$1000] 2018 ASUS ROG GM501GS (1070, i7-8750H) vs 2018 Gigabyte Aero 15X (1070 Max-Q, i7-8750H) vs something else?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:22 PM PDT

So I'm looking at two secondhand laptops, both two years old: a Gigabyte Aero 15 X (with a 1070 Max Q), and an ASUS ROG Zephyrus GM501 (with a regular 1070).

Both have i7-8750H processors, 16gb ram, similar SSD/HD setups, and 144 Hz panels.

As I type this, I'm also looking at a local OfferUp listing for an Alienware 17 R4 with a regular GTX 1070, a i7-7820HK, and a 120 Hz display (~$850).

Is buying something a year or two old actually a good way to strike a balance between performance and value? Are these all too old? I've had my current PC for 7 years, so my perceptions are maybe a little off.

    \

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • About $1000, though I'd love to spend around $900. I live in the US.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • YES (I would prefer to - I buy pretty much all of my electronics used or refurbished).

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Performance > Build Quality > Form Factor > Battery Life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not a priority - until COVID calms down, it's only moving between my office and my living room.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 15 or 17 inch, 120 or 144 Hz.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Games!

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • I want high FPS in Valorant and Apex Legends, and I want to be able to run most modern games relatively well. Monster Hunter World, Prey, and the Hitman games are on my short list.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Aside from performance, build quality is my highest priority. I already have a keyboard and mouse that I love, so the quality of the keyboard/trackpad doesn't mean much to me.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • Should I be looking for a laptop with newer components (even if those components are less powerful on paper)? GPU-wise I feel like I want "at least" a 1070, but as time passes will it make more sense to have something newer like a 1660? I don't know much about how older video cards (or CPUs for that matter) end up losing steam relative to newer ones when it comes to being able to run increasingly new programs/games.

Best budget business / office laptop?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:54 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Prefer to spend 500, open to go up to 700 if it is sensible to satisfy my needs. Country of purchase: Italy

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes to refurbs, no to used

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Form factor (slim and clean, ultra book-like, no 2-in-1) 2. Build quality 3. Battery life 4. Performance (no gaming needs, office work-oriented, so performance just needs to clear the "good to load somewhat heavy spreadsheets" threshold

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Important in the sense that I am looking for an ultra book-like style of laptop, no chonky and clunky stuff

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14-15 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Nothing of the sort. Only office work. Sometimes this is "heavy" office work (big spreadsheets, multiple office tabs)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No gaming requirement.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Excellent keyboard (no number dial pad), reliable build quality, no touch screen, HDMI ISB-C and Ethernet port required

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Think of a good budget business oriented laptop. I will type on it a lot and load excel spreadsheets and pdf files. How well it performs these functions is all that matters.

    Thank you!

[Australia] [~$2.5k] desktop and laptop replacement

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:46 AM PDT

I currently have two computers which I would like to simplify into one powerful but portable unit.

    1. I have an old Microsoft Surface Pro 4 from five years ago which still works. It's slow, but I love the pen feature which I use extensively.
    2. My desktop is a custom build from a few years ago. It has an i5-8600 3.1Ghz processor, cooled with a H100i v2 liquid cooler system, 16GB ram, with dual monitors (4K and FHD) running from a NVIDIA GeForce GTX1070. For my everyday operations, it's probably over keel, but I still run 3D engineering software and would like to play the occasional game on it.

    My key requirements are:

    1. The laptop NEEDS to have a dedicated stylus (and touchscreen)
    2. The laptop needs to replace my desktop (similar or better specs)
    3. The laptop needs to be dockable so that I can still get the desktop experience (external 4K screen, mouse, keyboard, audio, etc …)
    4. Keyboard should be full size (for touch typing) and should have a number pad

I have done some research online to try to understand the market and have used a weighted matrix to try to narrow the best options (https://imgur.com/a/d0PzTLs). Top options for me (from best to worse) seem to be:

    1. Lenovo Yoga C940 15 in Convertible Laptop
    2. Dell Inspiron 14 700 2-in-1 Laptop (7501)
    3. HP Spectre x360 15.6 in Convertible Laptop
    4. HP Envy x360 Laptop - 15-ed0047nr
    5. Lenovo Yoga C740 2-in-1 Convertible Laptop
    6. Microsoft Surface Book 3, 15 in

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Pretty flexible. Will have to save up the money anyway. My research is suggesting that I need to expect around AU$2k-2.5k.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Factor: anything, probably 2-in-1. I want to be able to get a tablet experience when I need it.
Build quality: will be my main computer, so it should be a suitable quality
      Performance: desktop replacement specs
Battery life: not critical as I'll probably have it plugged in all the time.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Nice, but not important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Large, 15+ inches. 4K is nice but FHD is sufficient.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Davinci Resolve, Solidworks/Fusion360
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Random and varied. So long as it's not choppy, I don't mind. I'm fine with 60fps. 6GB graphics card has been more than enough for me.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would like a number pad on the full sized keyboard.
It will get heavy use (as my only computer), so build quality must reflect that.
Touch screen and stylus is a must
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Can't choose between Huawei d14 (2019 version) and Asus Zenbook 14 UM433DA-A5020T

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:39 AM PDT

The two laptops have pretty much the same specs, but the Huawei costs 649€ for ryzen 5 3500u or 699€ for ryzen 7. On the other hand the Zenbook goes for 799€ ( 749€ with a discount). I would get the Huawei but I'm worried about reliability and future Windows updates availability. Any thoughts or advice?

(Australia) what's the closest thing to the ASUS Zephyrus G14 but with a webcam?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 04:20 PM PDT

I would have bought the G14 straight away if it wasn't for the lack of a webcam. I need a 14 inch laptop that can run games such as league of legends and csgo. Thanks

    Need help purchasing a laptop!!

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:36 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      • Around the 1000 USD range, preferably not past 1200, but if it's a good deal, I don't mind spending the extra buck.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not really, but if its a good deal, I wouldn't mind. Mostly looking for new laptops doe.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-I'd like it to play new games at a good frame rate, nothing crazy high, but something that could play the game enjoyably. I also would like it to have a decent battery life as it will also be used for college. Also very important, I want something that isn't too flashy!! Something that doesn't scream gaming laptop.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd prefer the laptop to not be too bulky and not on the too heavy side, but I understand for my price range I won't be able to get something really thin and light weight. So just something that isn't obnoxiously bulky and too heavy, something that you could carry around without too much struggle.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      -No preferred size

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      • Yes adobe programs, because I will be taking courses that will use some of them, and games like GTA 5 and Rainbow Six Siege. I don't mind if its not on like the highest settings, as long as its playable and looks decent.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-Just an fps I can enjoy and not have any issues with, so like around the 60 range.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Not really

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-If what I ask for is out of my price range, let me know, I'm open to changing my requirements. Thank you very much!!!

    [UK][£800]Laptop for college student

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:46 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: The maximum I am willing to spend is £800 but preferably would like to keep it around £600
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Any form factor is fine. Build quality>performance>battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Would prefer 14 inches and under
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will occasionally be playing Minecraft and using Photoshop every once in a while
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? As mentioned above the only game I will be playing is Minecraft.
    • Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? My highest priority is having a good screen. I would also like dual storage preferably a large HDD and an SSD for the OS and applications. I would also prefer if it charged via USB C.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have finally decided to upgrade from my 2012 MBP. This machine has held up very well considering its age. Some things that I despise about this laptop are the loading times when booting up and opening up applications, the screen is not of good quality and I can see my reflection in it. However, some things I do like about it are the trackpad which is amazing and the layout of the keyboard which is very comfortable to type on.

Please let me know if my demands are not possible in my budget and thank you very much in advance!

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and Build are very important to me. Battery doesn't need to be the best But at least a good amount if I need to use it without it plugged in.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not really important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 and up I guess

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Heavy Gaming. But would also like to try Unreal Engine for game design. Also want to try Video Editing. And IOS App Development. Using Swift. Photoshop. Basically need a laptop that can run it all. If that's possible but priority on Gaming and IOS App Development.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I will be gaming. Games include Rainbow Six Siege/Minecraft/Battlefield V/ Gary's Mod/Red Dead Redemption 2. I also want to emulate, be able to play ps1/ps2 games. And Nintendo 64. As for setting I guess the best setting I can run with my budget. I'd like the best quality but if that's not possible than it's fine. I want to be able to run most games at high settings. Doesn't need to be the highest but good enough that I can pull above 60 FPS on all games.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd like it to be sturdy and reliable. I don't mind a touch screen but it won't be necessary if it increases the price. I'd like it to have good storage and ram. Other than that I'm totally newbie at this stuff so whatever you think is best.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Would like to have the laptop come with a Ethernet Jack so I can get better wifi on it. That's about it hope anyone can help :) thanks in advance

      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I don't want it to be so as molasses. Sturdy build I guess.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Don't want to cart a brick around, but a little heft is fine.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Something affordable that will last more than a a year. Upgradable RAM & storage a plus might be good.

    laptop for a student

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 10:15 PM PDT

total budget: max 1,200 usd. (preferably less tho. I am a student)

    open to refurbs/used: yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life: no idea what Ultrabook is, I wouldn't use a 2 in 1 or 360° feature, touchscreen doesn't matter. I would like a 6hr or more battery life. Idk wtf a ram is but I am a CHRONIC way-too-many-tabs-open person. email and Spotify are always open. I'm gonna be in school so studying and using zoom and docs and reading and also my Wikipedia binges. I cannot change. the computer must be able to deal w this. for build i would like it to be durable, ive destroyed phones before and I don't want to make another purchase like this for a few years.

how important is weight and thinness to you: I would like it to not be a brick. I have slightly larger than normal hands.

do you have a preferred screen size: I'd like it if it fit in an average backpack.

are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: no

if you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want: I like to play Minecraft and Tetris. sometimes I spice it up and play fireboy & watergirl.

any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad). Bluetooth, a USB port, front-facing camera. I would Not like it to be one of those freaky ones that reads my face or whatever. bonus points if it's from a "secure" company so i can have the illusion of online privacy.

Trying to decide between the HP Spectre or the HP Envy

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:27 PM PDT

Currently trying to decide between one of the following, HP Spectre customized with 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, and an i7. Or the HP Envy with the same specs. I had a dell xps 13 for a few weeks but had to return it because it had tons of problems. The main benefits that I see with the Envy being that I could buy it basically the same week if not the same day, costco has an amazing return policy, and it is about 300 dollars cheaper. On the other hand, the Spectre looks sexy, has thunderbolt 3 and better ports, but wouldn't show up until next month at the earliest, and its more expensive.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Up to 14000 USD.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Prefer not, unless there's a good deal
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Prefer a 2-in-1
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I like thinner, but I'll take a larger laptop if it is more powerful.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      I prefer 13in
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I am using this for school, so I will mainly be running code on it
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Nothing really, maybe some pixel based indie games
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
The biggest thing I want is something that runs without issues. In the weeks I had the xps, the headphone port stopped working, bluetooth stopped working, and my screen had major issues. I just want something that works out of the box.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would also be okay with something else but I would prefer one of the two options.
