Can I use a router from another country?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 03:54 PM PDT

Hi, I hope this isn't too dumb of a question.

In short, our router has died. (FritzBox 7490, lights were all suddenly off, it isn't the socket or anything like it.) I have a router still saved from when I was studying abroad (Austria) and I was wondering if that one could be used interrim until we can get a new one?Would it be an outright no from the beginning, or would it work if we called the provider and ask them to switch? Both routers were issued by the provider.

    Thanks so much.

I just bought a ASUS AX58U after my Linksys EA8500 died. Good move?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 04:20 PM PDT

I don't really have a AX device outside of my Galaxy phone. I don't really do anything on the network outside of streaming Funimation anime and downloading digital PS4 games. I'm getting a PS5 later this year. I felt it was a better purchase than the TP Link and Nighthawk AX4 after briefly looking at reviews and impulsively buying it from Best Buy for 192 total. Does this router have any issues? I usually buy Linksys routers but they don't tend to last more than two years, if that.

Roommate's unnecessary wifi extender potentially causing problems for the rest of us? Possible solutions?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 04:20 AM PDT

For a summary, it's exactly what's on the box hahah. I don't live in a large apartment at all, but one of my roommates has convinced himself he needs to purchase and use a wifi extender, despite it being entirely unnecessary for the space. For some context on why I say it's unnecessary: I have been in this apartment for 5/6 years (he has been here ~5 months), no roommate I've ever had has complained about the wifi not reaching that room before, and my other roommates who have a room next to his say the wifi is the same as it is everywhere else in the apartment. I have even spent time in that room myself and in my experience it was exactly the same as the rest of the apartment as well. Even though the router is in the living room, it's a pretty small place and we have pretty solid internet (despite it being Spectrum).

Since literally (and I mean actually literally, not hyperbole-literally) the first hour it was setup, the extender has been either causing a crazy amount of interference or taking up an extreme amount of bandwidth to a point that it is slowing things down, but I'm not sure which one. Before the extender was plugged in, the 4 of us could all be playing games, working, etc. all at the same time without any issues whatsoever and as soon as this extender was set up things started running extremely slowly and I started being regularly kicked from online games (the wifi will just straight up shut off for a 10-15 second burst), something that has never happened to me with this connection before (random city outages aside). I talked to my other roommates (that are not him) and they said they've been experiencing the same thing, but the roommate that bought the extender refuses to believe that it's a problem, insisting that the internet has "been this bad the whole time." (also on a side note, the wifi actually went out for one of those fun 15-second bursts as I was writing this).

So that's where you all come in, I have a couple questions related to this bizarre scenario:

    1. Can a wifi extender actually cause these types of problems or is it something else and the timing was purely coincidental? I looked up the model and it appears to be a cheap one from amazon, which I've heard can be more likely to cause interference issues, but I am not 100% sure that it is the extender causing the issues since I don't exactly have a way of proving it other than the timing lining up extremely well.
    2. Since my roommate won't listen to us and remove the extender, is there anything I can do from my end within the settings of the router, i.e. limiting the bandwidth allotted to the extender? If the extender is using up so much bandwidth that it's making the rest of us unable to do things like work and play games, is there a way I can throttle that bandwidth when I login to the router? Or if it's interference of some kind, is there even anything I can do?

I know this might seem potentially shady that I want to just go in and deal with it myself, but the rest of us are all working from home during this pandemic (and when we're not we want to do things like play games) and it's become a huge inconvenience, not to mention extremely frustrating, to deal with constantly being kicked off the wifi for seemingly no reason. I'm okay with my roommate having an extender if it makes him feel better, but right now it appears that the extender isn't actually doing anything for him at all and is simply making life a lot harder for the rest of us.

Sorry this ended up so long, but thanks in advance to anyone who stuck it out hahah!

(Edit: some typos, it's late and my hands aren't working properly apparently)

Edit 2/Follow up: Thanks so much everyone for the advice! A lot of you suggested finding a new roommate and don't worry that's already in progress—I was willing to work with him because he's temporary and will be leaving at the end of August, so I'm just trying to get through some temporary misery hahah! Blacklisting his MAC address seems like the way to go at this point because after some testing it's definitely the extender causing the problem, and he's shown absolutely no willingness to work with anyone—and I'm feeling like a petty ass bitch today and I'm tired of his shit. In other news that is definitely not related to blacklisting MAC addresses at all, haven't been disconnected from final fantasy once today.

A good Router for DOCSIS 3.1 modem?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:13 PM PDT

I wanted to begin my new apartment with my own internet so I started with an approved modem by my ISP. I got the Arris SB8200.

I don't know where to go from here for the router? Suggestion are welcome but is there something specific I should look for? We are splitting the cost 3 ways so price isnt to big a deal but still reasonable is better.

1G ATT Fiber speeds attrocious (8.1Mbps via their official speed test). What can be done to improve?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 01:06 PM PDT

I've been getting terrible speeds from ATT Fiber. I'll restart my computer and my network multiple times a day in attempts to improve it, but typically with little to no improvement.

Usually, I'm around 15-20Mbps, sometimes dipping as low as 8-12. Rarely do I ever get above 100Mbps.

Using the provided Arris BGW210, and it constantly drops out for all devices (iPhones, Macbooks, XBox, Roku).

Is this just a poor modem/router? Should I ask for a replacement? Would a mesh system or new router help?

Setting up a wired bridge between routers in my home

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 02:50 PM PDT

I need some help with what I should do. I have 2 routers and my modem is in the corner of my house. I plan to bridge via Ethernet to a more centrally located router.

    Reading this: https://learntomato.flashrouters.com/router-bridge-connect-two-routers-router-behind-router/

Makes me think I would want the first type (I don't follow this stuff super well so go slow when explaining) which considers the 2nd router a 'slave' router. How does the wi-fi work for this? Would I be better served putting some devices on channel 11 on one router and other devices on channel 3 on the other router? Can I do this with the slave router or is that only when I have DHCP enabled?

Also to do this bridge do I actually need tomato firmware or should i be able to do it with the normal firmware on my routers? ZyXEL EMG3425 and Netgear Nighthawk AC2300

I will be using wi-fi from router 2 while needing access to a PC hard wired in to router 1 (stream steam games for example).

Need a tutorial on how to put an rj45 jack in one room and connect it to an rj45 jack in another room

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 02:26 PM PDT

So I'm not much of a handyman at all. I want to help my buddy out. He lives in the second floor of his house. On the first floor of his house, on the opposite side, is his router. So he's literally on the opposite side of his house from his router.

He wants to put an rj45 jack in the wall next to his router, then run a wire through the wall then through the basement then up the walls into his room and connect to another rj45 jack. He will then plug an ethernet from router into first jack. Then plug his xbox into the new rj45 jack in his room. Therfore he will be directly connected to his router from all the way across the house. I know how to do the wiring, I just don't know how to cut the drywall and cut into the 2 by 4s and route the wire down the walls and what not. I can't find any videos on how to do this either.

I hope what I'm saying makes sense. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hardware Options for new Home Network?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 12:42 PM PDT

Building a new home and I am going to build a network from scratch.

I have been heavily researching Ubiquiti, and most of their hardware has plenty of high enough ratings, like AP's, PoE Switch, & Cameras. But I have been seeing a lot of negative posts lately about the UDM Pro, I wish I the regular UDM had protect on it bc I would just buy it. I will be running AP's and Cameras via PoE. Let's say I dint pick Ubiquiti, what are other hardware options? Or what is my best router alternative? I am a beginner when it comes to home networking, but understand enough for basics except for OS running PFSense or Ras Pi setups, that stuff I am 100% clueless on. Thanks for taking the time to read and help me out.

Also would really appreciate router recommendations to upgrade to.

    LAN to LAN network

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 04:06 PM PDT

I have recently moved into a family members house out in kind of the middle of nowhere. Currently I have my Xbox and setup out in their garage but the signal from their router barely reaches out there. I was looking into getting a second router to hook up but was unsure as I wouldn't be able to hook an Ethernet cord between the two. Would I be able to run a LAN to LAN network through a phone jack out in the garage or would it be smarter to just try and use a signal booster?

Is there a noticeable difference between the TP-Link Archer A7 and the A9?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 03:33 PM PDT

Also, would you recommend any alternatives to these models? I'm looking for something around $100 for a 2 bedroom 800 square foot apartment. Our internet speed is only 50 Mbps--streaming, web browsing and now video conferencing is all we do. We only have our phones, laptops, and printer connected to it. I may upgrade our internet to something like 150 or maybe 500 but there's no need to do that at the moment.

It is possible to allow more devices to my network?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 06:42 PM PDT

Hi, yesterday I installed (well, the company did) a brand new internet service at my house because my old service really sucked. They gave me a modem/router (Huawei HS8545M5) and didn't give me the password to the admin account of the network configuration. I think that modem doesn't allow many devices because when my family and I are connected some devices disconnect randomly and it's pretty annoying because we could be watching a movie, or playing online, in a zoom call or something and it disconnects. We have 4 phones, a Chromecast, 2 laptops and 2 tablets and a desktop computer connected via ethernet to the Huawei modem.

    So I have many doubts:

1- I tried connecting the old router (Tp-link TL-WR841N ) directly via ethernet to the Huawei modem and the network through the tp-link was something like 1Mbps (The plan is 50Mb) why does this happen?

2- I could configure or use the old router with the new one to allow more devices?

3- Also I have a Tp-link WR802N and I use it as a repeater, its configured with the Huawei modem to make the signal strong enough for my parent's room.

what can I do? It's pretty annoying dealing with this problem.

Note: I asked for the password and they told me that they can't do it because company policy and I'm kind of afraid of factory resetting the Huawei modem and lose the Ip configuration of the company and lose the internet.

Using AC2900 with N66U as an access point without cable?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:58 PM PDT

Hello everyone and thanks in advance!

I just installed the GT AC 2900 and got it up and running. I was using a RT-N66U previously that I swapped to Access Point for the operational mode.

Now my question, is it possible to have the N66U access point access the AC2900 network wirelessly instead of being wired into the AC2900? When it's wired into the AC2900 the Access Point works. If I unplug the cable the device says it is connected, but without Internet.

I've updated the N66U to the latest firmware. However, the AIMesh icon does not appear. AIMesh discovery on the AC2900 interface also does not detect the N66U when it's not plugged in via Cat cable.

I wanted to move the N66U downstairs to have larger coverage. How can I solve this problem? Am I missing a setting? I tried using the Asus app too.

Is it necessary for Xfinity to send a tech to my apartment

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 09:11 AM PDT

If I have my own modem/router? I purchased a Netgear AC1600 WiFi Cable Modem Router so I wouldn't have to pay monthly for Xfinity's.

I will be moving to the apartment this weekend and thinking to schedule a set-up date. But isn't this something I can just do myself? Just attached the wires into the wall and call it a day? I know I have to call Xfinity first to make sure they can provide me their services. But aside from that, will they tell me that a tech HAS to come to my apartment to set it up? From what I've read is that if a tech comes, all they do is turn on the modem/router and attach the wires... but I just want to make sure. I don't want to spend extra money on something that I can do myself.

    LAN micro-outages

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:45 PM PDT

I have a LAN of three PCs off a cheap gigabit switch.
Just lately, a backup program that I use each day has often been quitting part way through checking all the files looking for changes that need backing up. If I restart the backup computer and run the backup again it usually works. If I don't restart, it usually fails.

I'm thinking that a brief connection failure might be causing the backup to break.
How would I monitor or test the LAN to look for breakages?
Perhaps a batch script that pings the other computers on a regular schedule?

UPnP / DLNA confusion: Server - Control Point - Renderer

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 01:49 PM PDT

While waiting for a new Hegel H190 to arrive, I'm trying to wrap my head around the streaming capabilities and the best way to set up my digital domain. I'm hoping this community can get me up to speed.

Currently, I'm running a USB cable from my laptop to my Marantz HD-DAC1. My laptop pulls digital files from a Mac Server share on a wired network. I have three devices (two monitored computers and a headless mac mini running the server software) connected to an Airport Extreme - that is maxed out at only three ethernet connections.

Into this, I want to add the Hegel H190.

First up is the need for another network connection. I've thought about getting a new router with more ports but it should be easier and cheaper to put a switch between my Airport Extreme router and devices including the Hegel. Are there any concerns with keeping the Airport Extreme and using a switch? Any reasons to upgrade to a newer router? Do some routers come with UPnP servers embedded?

Second, perhaps I should keep using the USB or perhaps a Toslink connection to stream music from my laptop to the Hegel in order to get the best sound quality. I also stream Qobuz and local files from my iPad or phone using a chrome-cast device. (HDMI plugged into an audio splitter that outputs to Toslink). Is there even an advantage to using a network connection to stream music - other than taking the USB cable & chrome-cast & audio splitter box out of my system?

The third is the issue of what can I do with a network-connected Hegel - aside from update the firmware? It seems like I need to have a UPnP server like BubbleUPnP sitting on my network somewhere in order to connect music files - whether from Qobuz or from my local hard disks - to the Hegel renderer. Is this the case? Would Qobuz desktop or Mobile App be able to find the Hegel without BubbleUPnP? Further, I'm still a little confused as to whether the BubbleUPnP acts as its own music interface or if it solely acts as a conduit between the Hegel renderer and some music player interface. In the latter case, I need to connect other music indexing interfaces to it. Are there any decent control points for desktop macOS?

Fourth is (and the reason I can't seem to answer these questions on my own) is that I can't install BubbleUPnP. The first step from the Bubble UPnP guide is to be sure your Mac OS hosts file has a hostname.

IMPORTANT if running under macOS Sierra or higher
Look at /etc/hosts and make sure your computer local hostname is listed:
cat /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 <hostname>.local ::1 <hostname>.local Where <hostname> is your local hostname. If these 2 lines are missing, edit the file as root and add them. Without this, BubbleUPnP Server will run but will be much slower that normal.Read more

Neither my laptop nor my server has a hostname, only "localhost" is listed at both of these places (127.0.0.1 and::1). I'm reluctant to edit these - especially on the server for fear of losing contact with the headless device. Any advice?

Okay. If anyone can help with any of this I would be very grateful.

Suggestions for feeding Ethernet throughout house

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:31 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I am looking to run cat6a ethernet cable from by basement (where my modem is located) to the 2nd and 3rd floors of my house. I am planning to run the cable either along the top or bottom of my baseboards and am looking for suggestions on what to use to ensure the cable is tight and secure to the wall. I have mostly been eyeing https://www.amazon.ca/VELCRO-Brand-Industrial-Strength-Superior/dp/B0001UZZ72?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1&th=1, but wanted to ensure I am making the right decision before I purchase (I heard cat6a cable is stiff and can be some trouble to work with).

    Thanks!

Help! High latency when playing games whilst on Zoom

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:28 PM PDT

Hello! I was wondering if someone could help. I've recently been experiencing high latency/ping when playing games. I initially thought that this was due to "bufferbloat, as such, I went ahead and bought a router with SQM in hopes that it will solve the problem. I bought the Ubiquiti Dream machine as it was highly recommended by another redditor.

I installed the new router today and everything was fine until a member of the family had to attend a Zoom meeting of about 70 people (From Canada, US, UK, EU). I'm not really sure how much Zoom has an affect on latency but this was the only application running apart from my PC whilst I was playing.

This led me to think that this may have been the cause of the lags experienced in the past. I was hoping the ~£300 router would fix this issue but now I've really hit a brick wall. Can some help me please?

    ASUS ROUTER: NETWORK MONITORING

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 07:22 AM PDT

    Hello,

In my ASUS RT-AC68U there is an option called NETWORK MONITORING. It is located in Administration > System.

It has options for DNS and PING. What exactly is the purpose of these two options?

I am looking for a way to auto-reboot the router on it's own using the GUI options (and without an external device or cron jobs). Basically if the router can not ping a certain address or resolve a certain hostname, I would like it to reboot itself. Is that possible through the NETWORK MONITORING option?

    RJ11->RJ45 Cat5 Conversion

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 05:01 PM PDT

    Hi Guys!

Moving into a house that was built in 2006. While I haven't pulled am RJ11 Jack from the wall yet, some random drops (eg like a cable bundle in the garage) lead me to believe (🤞🤞) the house was wired with cat5.

    Every room has an RJ11.

Assuming I'm right, what's the best way for me to convert those to RJ45?

    1. New plates
    2. Cut and reterminate for RJ45
    3. Trace source and install switch/patch panel in place of POTS panel

    Thanks for your guidance!
