How I get the most out of Google Play's recommendation system

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 09:00 PM PDT

After playing mobile games for years on end, one tends to get bored with the average mobile game presented in the Play Store. As there is no real way to filter through the massive pile of games Google recommends in search of the next fun experience, I've come to rely on the one thing Google has put a lot of effort into making easy to use: the rating system.

Since anyone and everyone can give their opinions in less than a minute, anyone who feels distinctly more than "meh" can give their input on the game they're playing. This has led to a fairly accurate representation of how many gripes people in general have with a game.

Below is my opinion on how the rating system can be utilized to, at a glance, slog through the numerous games presented by Google Play. I still recommend reading through a few reviews to see what the less than stellar ratings say, but this method has served me well overall.

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT saying any games of a specific rating are bad. This is just my method for filtering through a system with no inherent filters.

Now without further ado, here's the guide:

< 4.2: Generally not worth your time. For some reason the overwhelming majority of people have rated this game 4 stars or lower, and that means we're moving on.

4.2-4.4: Can be good, but safe to skip over. These are primarily 4 star ratings, meaning most people got enjoyment out of it but thought it could be better. Good games will end up here because they're bloated with ads.

4.5: Good game, but has a few issues. If you're afraid of missing something, this is a good minimum standard.

4.6: Pretty good game. Enough people loved it enough to give the game more 5 star reviews than anything else. This is normally my minimum standard, but beware of companies that buy reviews.

4.7: This game's got something special to it. People really like it, and it's probably worth seeing why.

4.8: This game is one of the best. I very rarely see ratings of 4.8 and higher, and they're usually associated with puzzle games and text adventures. You're probably missing out if you're not playing this game.

4.9: God Tier. Play it now, and have no regrets. As the game becomes popular it will probably fall to a 4.8 or 4.7, but as of right now you are staring at a unicorn.

5.0: Diamond in the rough. If you find a game with this rating, assuming it has more than 100 downloads and it isn't a glitch, you have found something to be cherished. Literally nobody has rated it poorly, despite an innate tendency for someone somewhere to feel the urge to nitpick or give their 10 cents on why it's not perfect. This game is beautiful.

There you have it. I hope this serves you well and helps you get as much enjoyment out of your Android device as I have. If you have any critique on the guide, be it how I could format it better, key points I could add to help others, or just that I'm an incompetent oaf, please feel free to comment!

TLDR; Anything rated above 4.5 is worth checking out, and 4.8 is generally exceptional quality. Give games you really recommend a 5 star review.

[Request] Looking for some non-P2W base building war game.

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 05:23 PM PDT

    Copied from another subreddit.

I really like the idea of games like FFXV / Game of War / CoC where you have a base, build up an army, and go invade other players, along with a guild system and stuff.

However every single kind of those games I've seen are horribly P2W (I'm pretty sure half of them are the same game with redesigned art), was just wondering if there were any games in their style which are f2p friendly. Any suggestions?

[REQUEST] Games where you have to use the real-world internet to solve puzzles (ARGs/Augmented Reality Games)?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 12:54 PM PDT

One of the best mobile games I've played is The Vigil Files: Case 1 because it highly incorporates using the internet and Google to solve puzzles and do research. On both proprietary websites created by the game's developers and on actual real-world sites. I absolutely love this puzzle mechanic.

Other games I found with this mechanic include Project Void and NoStranger.

Any other games you can think of?

EA To Soft-Launch Apex Legends Mobile by the end of 2020.

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 09:02 PM PDT

EA To Soft-Launch Apex Legends Mobile by the end of 2020.

There has been a lot of confusion regarding Apex Legends Mobile. During EA Play 2020, when it was announced that Apex Legends would be expanding to Nintendo switch, the mobile gaming community got super disappointment; some even claimed that Apex Legends Mobile is nothing more than just a rumor.

But on 22nd June EA's CEO Andrew Wilson during a fireside chat for the investor community has officially confirmed that EA wants to reach all players no matter what platform. In mobile games, the company has Plant v Zombies in soft-launch already and will also soft-launch Apex Legends By the end of this year. [Source]

Non-gacha Match 3/RPG games like Puzzle Quest?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 10:09 AM PDT

I loved Puzzle Quest back in the day. The mix of RPG with match 3 was perfect. I've tried some in Android but they're all gacha, with the typical cave-at that the campaign missions get super-tough after about 5-6 maps, so you have to grind and grind or spend $$$. So anything like the original Puzzle Quest with its single player campaign with no grind, no gacha, just pure fun?

[DEV] My first mobile app: Break

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 08:21 PM PDT

First off, please check it out.

Background: Break is my first mobile game to be published. I started it around March. It has been my path to learning about Android development. I made my own UI objects, so it looks a little simple/boring, but I like have my own stuff with as little from other people as possible.

What did I learn: The process of building Break taught me many tricks, structures, and practices.

    • I began using Trello which was probably the most important lesson. Ideas were able to flow wherever I was. Riding in the car? Eating lunch? Write them down.

    • I learned the process of Alpha/Beta/Full Release and the steps to making an update.

    • I invested time in properly organizing the app into clear sections that could be minimized (using Android Studio's folding tool).

    • Independance became a huge factor. I couldn't just find an image or sound online like I did with Python programs. I had to make everything myself, and the result may look boring, simple, or even lame, but I own that result. I know the in's and out's of that result. It isn't something Google handed me. I know how it works. There is only room for improvement in this department. With each UI element, logo, sound, etc. that I make, I will get better. I am proud of what I made.

    • I learned to pace myself and take breaks. At first, I coded every hour I could. I honestly got burnt out and didn't touch the project for a week or more. Now, patience and consistency are habits. Don't let a problem bog you down. Don't spend to much time each day or else you will feel the strain.

    • Finally, I learned one of my favorite pastimes: music and code on a hot afternoon. After working all day, it seems getting home, taking a shower, and relaxing with some chill music is the perfect environment for coding.

Maybe this will help some other beginner developers, but I am still seeking advice myself. Please check out my work and tell me what I can do better! Thanks.

Paid game with the biggest online community?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 04:32 AM PDT

I have some google play credits and I'm tired of gacha based games. I'm hoping paid games won't be gacha based and you just buy the full package. I'm open to any kind of game. I just want an active multiplayer aspect to the game. PvP or pve, though i prefer PvP. Active development would be a huge plus. I don't mind if the game has IAP for dlc or cosmetics.

I'm looking for a random unit defense game similar to ones found in UMS StarCraft. I found Random Dice which has been pretty fun but I'm looking for more!

    Thanks!

    Simple Match-3 Game recommendations..?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 03:08 PM PDT

    Hi all,

When browsing the Play Store most the match 3 games seem to include added mechanics:

    • RPG type progression
    • 1000± levels
    • Unlock this
    • Purchase that
    • PVP
    • Facebook friend lists
    • Etc

I'm looking for simple match 3 game recommendations that stay true to the basic match 3 formula without all the extra mechanics. Just match 3 and survive as long as you can. No (or minimal) levels/difficulty, no pay to win, no RPG progression etc.

Do the basic match 3 games exist anymore or are we stuck with the aforementioned types with all the additional mechanics etc?

Here are 3 games that not much have heard of but are worth every penny

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 12:19 AM PDT

1st game: delta touch. It's a app which let's you play doom mods ON YOUR PHONE (doom from 1992) it comes with gzdoom lzdoom chocolate doom prdoom and retro doom. It's only about 2 or 3 bucks. However keep in mind you need to have a copy of the original doom 1 and 2 files depending on which mods are for which game

2nd game: levelhead. A super mario maker spinoff with beatiful art, music and designs. Probably one of the most advanced mario maker spinoffs.the editor let's you put music at specific parts change the weather etc. It is my favorite game on this list how ever it costs a lot a whole 7 bucks

3rd place: death road to canada. A zombie survival game where you try to make it to canada. It has amazing music and pixel graphics. And lots of modes. The game doesn't take itself seriously as there are some jokes here and there. The story will always be randomly generated and so will the events not only that but you can make your own characters and give them traits and personalities. Sadly this one cost more then levelhead coming in at a 10 dollar price

Looking for isometric turn based RPG

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 09:14 AM PDT

I've loved isometric RPGs since Baldur's Gate 1 on the PC. I thought these kinds of games would be perfect for phones/tablets, as you can take your time while the game is paused to make your decisions. BG1 (and the other infinity engine games) is not real turn based, and I think a real turn based game would be better for a phone. Examples of games I have played on PC: Shadowrun Returns, Divinity Original Sin, Pathfinder: Kingmaker.

Whenever I try to find something like this on the Play store, though, I only find either trash JRPGs, non-inometric or real time action RPGs. So do any of you have any recommendations for an Android game in the same vein?
