Google Chrome Vs Microsoft Edge Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:35 AM PDT Now that the new Microsoft Edge is released, should I just uninstall Google Chrome, as Edge is using the same code base? What are the benefits of the two if any? Thanks [link] [comments]
Resetting my PC with a Raid, UPDATE. Posted: 25 Jun 2020 01:43 PM PDT So, I was able to free up some space and back up my files locally before proceeding with Resetting my PC. After the reset, my Raid and files were still intact. It worked out well. Turning On HDR After Update Literally Breaking Windows / 5 Reinstalls Later Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:53 PM PDT I updated to 2004. After updating, I downloaded and installed necessary drivers and restarted the computer. Upon restarting I decided to get the most out of my MSI Optix 165hz monitor. I notice that I am on limited range (display port) - I am running a RTX 2060 Super, AMD Ryzen 5 3600. I try and change my range in Nvidia Control Panel and get nothing. It resets back to limited. I then try and turn on HDR. After I do this, the screen turns to black (occasionally it would refresh and show gray and black pixelated/blurry screen. This was welcome compared to...). My monitor would then say no display. I restart, the restart process goes into a "diagnosing your pc" loop, to which there is no return to Windows. I have had to do a clean install four times today, just from trying to upgrade to 2004 and turn HDR on. I was able to run full color settings pre-2004. [link] [comments]

I cannot believe I lost everything in those folders because some windows update in 2020... lol can anyone give some advice what should I do to get my stuff back? [link] [comments]

PSA: Don't install the latest Nvidia Drivers Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:36 PM PDT I've seen a few posts & reports so far, but just wanted to get the message out there to not install the latest Nvidia driver 451.48, I've luckily managed to roll my driver back as I was getting some funny behaviour after installing it but it's causing Windows to crash/ not respond or freeze up entirely for no reason. Posted: 25 Jun 2020 05:52 PM PDT This has happened multiple times today. HDR will not work and in fact is causing critical errors on my machine. I have no idea what's going on as it worked before this update. [link] [comments]
Create a shortcut to a file within a folder whose name changes... Posted: 25 Jun 2020 05:35 PM PDT I have an antivirus program (Norton product) that updates automatically. The executable file for the program resides in a folder whose name is the version number of the application. As the program get's updated, so does the folder name but the executable file keeps the same name. For example, the executable file name is "uiStub.exe" and it's located in: C:\Program Files\Norton Security\Engine\22.20.2.57\ After the automatic update the directory updated to: C:\Program Files\Norton Security\Engine\22.20.4.57\ Obviously, this breaks the shortcut because the path is no longer valid after the update. Every time the program is updated, the shortcut stop working and I have to create a new one again. This is incredibly annoying. Is there a way to create a shortcut whose path updates automatically? Why is task manager "end task" still just a mild suggestion? Posted: 24 Jun 2020 11:05 PM PDT What's the point of task manager trying to "end task" when half the time it does nothing and the other half it tries to "solve the problem" to no avail? The processes tab should behave like the "details" tab once you click "more details"... so infuriating [link] [comments]

Creating Startup Shortcuts that open Word, Excel and PPT to last document worked on Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:57 PM PDT I am looking to create 3 startup shortcuts for my Windows computer, where Word, Excel, and PPT automatically startup on restart, and open the last document I was working on before shut down. So far, I have accomplished this for Word using this setup, and then dropped that file in C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup However, I have not been successful finding the macro or approach that can get me the same result for Excel and PPT. Please help! Thank you in advance. [link] [comments]

Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:05 PM PDT I am fairly new to computers so excuse any terminology mistakes I make. I had a PC running Windows 10 with Intel Optane Memory setup. For reference, I didn't really know about this or what it was before. It's a 1 TB hard drive, so I thought I might partition it and try to dual-boot with Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows. However, I ran into a problem as I was trying to install it. I got this error message: >This computer uses Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology). You need to turn off RST before installing Ubuntu. For instructions, open this page: help.ubuntu.com/rst I tried following the first solution on [this AskUbuntu post](https://askubuntu.com/questions/1233623/workaround-to-install-ubuntu-20-04-with-intel-rst-systems) post. However, when I booted to Windows, it immediately went into recovery mode. I switched the SATA controller and tried all of the recovery options, but it looked like my Windows was gone. I have a Windows bootable CD, so I thought I'd just install Ubuntu over everything and install Windows later. I turned off RST and went to install it, but saw it installed with only 14 GB of space on an SSD, which was strange to me. After some inspection, I discovered this was the Intel Optane Memory SSD. I'm really worried I screwed up the Optane Memory, and I would still like to dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows but just Windows with Optane working would be a good start. Does anybody know if this is possible? Can I reconfigure it so it works for me? Much thanks. Also If this isn't the right sub for this, please guide me in the right direction. [link] [comments]

Can’t log into windows 10 after no longer being a student? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 03:22 PM PDT So I bought windows 10 years ago as a student and yesterday my university email account was shut down since I'm no longer a student. That email was the one associated with my Windows login, and when I try to login, it won't let me. I'm okay with paying for a license to use it, but I want to make sure I do it right. I'm guessing I need to make a new Microsoft account (from my phone) and buy a windows 10 license from the Microsoft store. Once the license shows up under that account, will I be able to log into my computer? Or is there a better way to go about this? I'm stuck at the login screen, so any help would be appreciated. Safe mode still requires me to log in unfortunately. [link] [comments]
Scripting settings after fresh install Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:51 PM PDT Hi all, I tend to wipe my system and perform clean installs from time to time. Mainly because upgrades are not always smooth and the latest windows 10 builds are buggy as fuck. Anyway the winget utility Microsoft have launched is a god send for automating the reinstallation of the bulk of my apps. Still work to be done but it speeds up the restore process. I wanted to know if there is a way to script/automate windows settings by just executing a single file. For example enabling storage spaces or enabling night light or set time zone to automatically detect if I'm in a different time zone. Does anyone know if this is possible in a relatively straight forward way? Btw I'm not a fan of creating an images of my machines so ruling that out for now. [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:15 AM PDT Hey! I have a Windows 10 laptop, operating in a area where neither WLAN or LAN is possible (without an enormous afford). I need to upload a few MB twice a week to a server and thought about using a surf stick with a prepaid simcard (500MB / month). Now Im thinking about Windows doing other heavy network stuff, I know I can disable checking / downloading for updates but are there other network heavy tasks windows does which then will eat on my 500MB limit. Buying a prepaid card with more than 500MB (lowest I can find in Germany) i not reasonable for pushing just a few MB of data over the connection.
Thanks :-) [link] [comments]
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 12:41 PM PDT I'm stuck on a Windows box for the time being and not as familiar here as I am with Linux. I can't get powershell to run on its own - pops up and instantly vanishes - so I install Windows Terminal and use that in the hopes that it'll spit out an error and not just vanish. I get this output from starting a Powershell tab: Windows PowerShell Try the new cross-platform PowerShell https://aka.ms/pscore6 The shell cannot be started. A failure occurred during initialization: [process exited with code 4294901760] Anyone can help? Would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
