Do you get decent and stable ping with MoCa? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:26 PM PDT I'm considering getting a MoCa adapter. I'm currently gaming on wifi which can be rather frustrating because my ping will casually go up from 40 to 900 which can easily come at the cost of a game and a enjoyable experience. Running an ethernet cable would be inconvenient and I was wondering whether I could except a decent ping (atleast <50) and more importantly stable. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Jun 2020 05:39 AM PDT I have a 20mbps connection in my home (Kerala Vision Fibre connection). I always get the 20mbps speed while testing in speedtest.net by Ookla. But on almost all other internet speed test websites, I barely get 5mbps. I am pretty sure that my ISP is throttling my internet speeds. I didn't have the same problem in my old BSNL ADSL conenction. Also I can barely play games because of frequent disconnections. I even get disconnected from Discord servers occasionally. When I called and asked the ISP directly they said they have no idea what is wrong and it is the problem with those websites. I also did all the same speedtests while using a VPN (Windscribe free, set to best location) and all the speeds where near 15mbps. But using a VPN makes the connection extremely laggy especially for games. Is there anything I can do? Location: Kerala, India Edit: messing around with some VPNs (finally ended up with ProtonVPN free version) finally solved all my problems. The ping jumped from 180-200 range to 60-100 range (for Valorant). Download speeds are always above 15 mbps now. For the first time I played GTA V without gettig disconnected every half an hour. Do I need to upgrade to 500 mbps internet or is it a waste? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 01:37 PM PDT Hello. I currently have Frontier Fios with 100/100 speeds. I have the option to upgrade to 500/500 for $10 more a month. There is 4 of us that lives in the house. Internet is used for 4K streaming on Kodi, Netflix, YouTube, and gaming. It is not uncommon for 4-5 different devices all using the internet at once. Is 100/100 sufficient or should I upgrade to 500/500? [link] [comments] |
Work VPN with split tunnel--How can I prevent all DNS queries from going to work DNS server? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:04 PM PDT I have an Open VPN connection on my personal computer (Windows 10) to my office's network. It opens up a new network interface on my computer (Ethernet 2). The ONLY thing I do is RDP into my work desktop. Though the split tunnel appears to be set up properly, I noticed that when connected, ALL of my DNS queries, even outside RDP, go to the office, rather than my router. I'd really like for my employer not to know that I'm on Reddit during work hours. It also circumvents my pfBlockerNG filtering. Is there a way I can force DNS traffic back to my router when connected, except for the IP address of my RDP? [link] [comments] |
Correlating IP Address, GPS, and multiple devices Posted: 25 Jun 2020 04:55 PM PDT Hi all, From what I understand, IP addresses are driven by/altered by the network you are on at any given time. I am wondering if the effect is consistent. I am trying to narrow down which device accessed my account (already did 2FA, password change, etc). Its down to 2 devices, one would have been used on my home network the other would not have. To test, I connected a known device (my phone) to home wifiand ran an IP address lookup, which returned the SAME exact GPS coordinates and ISP details as the unknown device. Does this mean that the unknown device was connected to the same network (my home wifi)? IP lookup using 3 different services returned the same details for each device. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Importing Cloud storage to some Synology Nas Posted: 25 Jun 2020 08:05 PM PDT HELLLLLOOOOOO HOMENETWORKING Quick notes on my self. I have decent overall computer knowledge, so I'll be able to understand most if not all the terms used in advance, don't feel the need to simplify answers. This is my first time messing with a NAS server. I originally just had portable harddrive but I'm trying to modern up my back ups a bit.I recently got a NAS system at home...and in a little confused and looking for some pointers. I'm trying to figure out a way to inport my cloud data from example made up name Tofo cloud services to my local NAS server . The Nas system comes with a few applications however they all seem to want to push information TO the Cloud storage instead of Downloading from the cloud storage. I could be just misunderstanding something super simple, but I'm trying to avoid downloading all the cloud storage to my PC, then uploading it to the NAS. I have information spread out and unorganized over a few Cloud services so I'm trying to compile everything in one spot for now. I'm sorry if this posts format is garbage, I'm overly tired and trying to get this done tonight. Any tips would be greatly appreciated and I'd like to warmly thank you in advance. -T [link] [comments] |

Upgraded to XFi/XB6-A and Google WiFi Mesh System No Longer Works Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:55 PM PDT Hi all, I recently connected with Comcast support to work on lowering my bill, and during this process actually found that I could save a little bit of money a month and increase my Internet speed by upgrading to a new customer promotion that includes Xfinity XFi and the XB6-A modem/gateway combo. I agreed to this on the condition that this setup would still work with my Google WiFi mesh system, which the rep assured me that it would. Previously, I had my own Arris SB6190 and the Google Mesh WiFi system, which together worked great. Unfortunately, after installing the new XB6-A today, I am unable to get the Google WiFi mesh system to work with this new equipment, leaving me with large dead spots in my house that previously had great access to the Internet. Here is what I have tried so far, all to no avail: Putting the router in bridge mode and plugging the mesh router node into ethernet port 1. Rebooting everything and doing the same as above (both times without any other devices plugged into the back of the XB6-A). Putting the router in bridge mode and plugging the mesh router node into ethernet port 2. Rebooting everything and doing the same as above (both times without any other devices plugged into the back of the XB6-A). Disabling bridge mode and plugging the mesh router node into ethernet port 1, even though this may cause a double-NAT scenario. Disabling bridge mode and plugging the mesh router node into ethernet port 2, even though this may cause a double-NAT scenario. In every instance, I am unable to get my old Google Mesh WiFi network to even appear as available for any of my wireless devices, have the mesh router node show up as a connected device within the system settings of the XB6-A (viewed via both the gateway login address and the XFI app), or show any signs of activity in the Google WiFi app. In fact, almost all of the inputs within the Google WiFi app are greyed out and showing as offline since the moment the XB6-A was installed, leaving me unable to toggle any settings at all. I also plugged my laptop into each of the two ethernet ports on the back of the XB6-A to test them both for connectivity, and each time I was able to connect to the Internet via these wired connections. Has anyone else had these issues? And if so, how did you find a solution? I tried everything I could thing of/read about on the web or via other Reddit posts, but I am at my wit's end with this one, so any help would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Installing Cat6a in my new home, first time doing this. Rate my build please! We do some media work but most of our other devices / NAS are only 1G for now anyway. Did my best to make sure everything was fully 6a compliant and shielded, as long as what I actually get isn't cheap rebranded 5e stuff. We have the annoying shredded fiberglass insulation throughout the attic and summer in Texas so this'll be fun for sure. [link] [comments] |

Caddy with Jellyfin domain issues Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:45 PM PDT Hello, I have tried getting my jellyfin to be accessible over the internet by buying a domain from domain.com, https://jellyfin.nervhq.space/ and directing my caddy install to So it does successfully say that it is proxying to the localhost where jellyfin is installed. But when i try and access it from that domain name i receive this error: ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED This is my current dns record from domain.com Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. ASUS RT-AC5300 all these hardware versions... Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:44 PM PDT Not sure if this is the right place to post this. I can't seem to find any documentation at all, on what the "hardware" version means, what's good, what's bad, what's legendary? I am looking at various iterations of the same damn router: ASUS RT-AC5300, but here are the different version numbers stamped on each one... A1.31 A1.36 A6 A8 Wikipedia has a "wikidevi" link to some site that housed all this information, but apparently that site was shut down in 2019... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:44 PM PDT I am helping my friend upgrade her home network and could use some advice. She has a 150-year-old two story 2500 sqft house. Previous owners apparently installed some ethernet wiring. There is a wall plate with four ports in the front living room with additional single ports in the downstairs bedroom, at least one of the upstairs bedrooms, the kitchen, and the tiny guest house in the garden. The four port plate is near some coaxial cable so I imagine the previous owners had their cable modem/router set up there. It looks like each of the four ports goes to one of the single ports (is this a common wiring setup?) Currently they have DSL internet with the DSL line in the downstairs bedroom. They have a modem/router set up in that room. Reception is not great upstairs so one of the residents has a wireless repeater set up in his bedroom. Reception is generally okay in the house but not very reliable. There is no reception in the guest house. I was looking into mesh wifi but realized that with the existing wiring mesh is unnecessary. I'm now looking at a Ubiquiti UniFi setup:
Any thoughts? I like the simplicity of the wall APs. A combo router/AP/PoE switch would be ideal for the living room but I didn't see one among Ubiquiti's products. [link] [comments] |

High ping, high download speed, mostly at night? Ethernet cable, not WiFi setup. Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:36 PM PDT Hi all, I've been gaming recently and noticed that my ping tends to be higher than normal in the evening (200ms) compared to the afternoon (35ms). I still have a fairly high download speed (200Mbs) but when I ping websites like Google.com or the CA servers for my video games, my ping ends up being ~150ms - ~200ms. I'm in California with Time Warner as my provider if that helps. I've tried restarting my router/modem combo thing, but that hasn't worked. I'm debating on calling customer support, and my roommate who doesn't game is unaffected as she doesn't really do much on the internet but stream movies. I'm also connected to an Ethernet cable, not WiFi, by way. Any help would be much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Netgear R6700 Router disconnecting issues Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:35 PM PDT Hello all. I recently bought a Netgear R6700 router along with a Netgear CM700 modem. I've noticed periodically from time to time the internet would disconnect on my computer and from my phone and would come back after a minute. However just now, the wifi's been down for almost an hour now with no signs of coming back up. All the lights on both the modem and router are good, and the security cameras that we have outside are still connected through wifi and are working somehow. Calling Netgear support right now, but do any of you guys have a known fix for this type of situation? [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to force a device to connect to a wifi repeater only? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:33 PM PDT I have a Wyzecam that would sometimes disconnect so I decided to give my WiFi signal a boost. I bought a RE305 range extender and I'm using it as a repeater only in the 2,4Ghz band. I have another Wyzecam nearby and would like it to connect to this repeater exclusively, I thought the proximity of the RE305 would force it to do this. I was wrong, this other Wyzecam keeps connecting to the main router. Does anyone know how I can force this connection? If I exclude the second Wyze by filtering it out at the router MAC filter, would it not prevent it to connect to the internet even if it connected to the range extender? [link] [comments] |
Work from “home” through a VPN? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 10:47 AM PDT Hi, Probably a dumb question but I work as a customer service agent in a call center, using Salesforce CRM software in a Citrix Desktop to deal with customer accounts. As work from home has gone well for many at the company it's something that they're making available for all on a permanent basis. I'm wondering if I could lease a private VPN with a static IP and mayyybbbeee fuck off to another country with a more reasonable cost of living? Would this work or are IT going to bust me immediately? Cheers [link] [comments] |

Suggestions for new router from amazon.ca where range is an issue for <200$? Need for telemedicine. Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:14 AM PDT As said above, I am starting telemedicine from my house and really need to have a strong and stable internet connection. I will unfortunately have to be a couple floors up (basement to office) from my current router so looking for something new. Would need it sooner than later which is why I am going to amazon to get it quickly. Any help would be appreciated! Edit: Thank you everyone for the information! Learned a lot. Will definitely look into what it will take to get wires put around, and if not possible at least the mesh system! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 09:10 AM PDT Guys, this is getting out of hand. I'm not the most techie but like digging into technicals before making a purchase. Home wireless networking finally deflated me - my head is spinning. There's too much to understand. I can appreciate how complex WIFI as a technology actually is so I'm not angry, but dang you'd think the industry would try to better educate the average consumer a bit to make a more informed decision. Anyways... here are some of my current confusions.
I don't have a huge house, I don't game. I have some smart home bulbs and switches but not much. My security cam loops content on an SD card only. We do the standard netflix watching (which by the way, works almost always without fault even thought it's through wifi, not wired). Pretty much the only reason I want to upgrade is that my current router is a single band N router which is apparently dated tech. COVID made me realize my video calling wasn't great for whoever we were speaking with so I upgraded our ISP from a 15/1 DSL to 75/10 cable. Still had minor issues so I'm looking at the router to be the bottleneck. Figured I'd spend a couple nights learning about routers and pick one.. Nope! I'd need to be convinced to spend over $250 on mesh system or higher end router, since its seems the Archer A7 gets lots of love. And I found the Archer C80 which seems to have a lot of those modern features everyone goes on about like 3×3 MIMO , beamforming, and SQM. Some people recommend getting a used older Asus but aren't the modern features top priority? I don't know anymore. Please help. [link] [comments] |
Best way to ensure stable connection? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 06:53 PM PDT I've got my router downstairs as there is only one phone socket in our household and i'm therefore stuck with the options of WiFi or Powerline. It's been going on for ages and now that i've got some time I want to change the way I have the connection set up and what is more beneficial for me when I'm playing games on my computer. I've noticed how bad my packetloss is when I reach 15% packet loss most of the time in Modern Warfare and get red boxes appear at the side of the screen in every gunfight. I've been using Powerline for the past 2 years and didn't notice it until I would play multiplayer intense games that revolve around important gunfights that are decided in seconds such as CS:GO/MW/Valorant and I also get huge ping spikes during the latter half of the day but I think that is due to my sister streaming video websites (Netflix) etc and can only be improved by talking to my ISP for a better package (Currently on 12 Mbps Down 4 Mbps Upload and 40ping). I've tried taking the router upstairs with a 15m ADSL cable which reduces the speed significantly so I'm open to other solutions that hopefully are cheaper and will provide a more stable internet. Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:58 PM PDT Mi wifi is completely trash right now, the only room were I can use it is in the 2nd floor. The only device I have is the default modem that my internet provider gave to me. I was thinking on buying a Asus AC1200 router and 2 mesh devices that work just on 2.4ghz. Is that any good? Or should I buy something different? Btw my problem is mainly wifi and the number of devices that are connected to the modem. My house is pretty big for just a standard modem, so what do u guys think I should do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jun 2020 02:56 PM PDT So I got TP link deco M9 today and it connects to all my smartphones and console but it won't connect to my TV and doesn't even show the name of my wifi in it. Does anyone know why that might happen. Please and thank you [link] [comments] |
