    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Ideally I would like to spend as little as $400 and am willing to venture into the $800+ territory, but will make sacrifices to avoid this. 600-700 range is perfect. I am in the U.S.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
No. Something new that will last me a good bit, but if there are options here I am slightly open.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance and build quality first, battery needs to be good but ideally above 4 hours, not really looking for 2-in-1 or anything fancy, just plain ol clamshell.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Doesn't really matter, but something that will be able to survive the rare occasional outing or vacation.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14-15.6, I'm replacing a 15.6 inch so something too small will be too much of a difference.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Something that won't crap its pants if I use Photoshop and the occasional use of Premiere, like once every two months if that.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Nothing too demanding, Minecraft, Speedrunners, Jackbox, Portal, with room for something that requires a little more power.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Optical drive would be nice, but not a deal breaker. No butterfly like keys, something more tactile. Something that is sturdy enough to survive a one foot drop.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Windows 10, ideally something with a lot of storage space built in.

Let me know if there are any questions or things that dont make sense :)

College student looking for a laptop (max $1000) that can last 4 years minimum. Is MacbookAir a good choice?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 01:47 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $900 - $1000. I'm buying in the U.S.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance > Battery life > Build quality > Form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Considerably important. I will most likely carry it around in my backpack.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I would prefer at most 14 inch.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Not for now.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      No gaming.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would love to have a laptop that can last me at least through 4 years of college, so durability is the top priority.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
As of writing this, I'm leaning toward an older version (2018 or 2019) of the MacBook Air, mainly because it's a common college student's choice in the U.S., and it generally seems very reliable. I'm only asking for suggestion, instead of going straight for the MacBook, because I heard a lot about it being overpriced. On the other hand, my experience with previous non-Apple laptops wasn't good either: after 2 to 3 years, the battery died out and I had to charge them non-stop, while the computer also slowed down significantly. The last thing I want to experience is waiting endlessly for the computer to start coming senior year.

I would love it if you can confirm the MacBook Air will fit my needs, or suggest a better alternative. Once again, performance and durability takes priority.

    Thank you so much!

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 04:09 AM PDT

I am looking for a laptop in price range of 1700-2000 USD with the intention of general use (University work, YouTube, casual photo editing etc.) and casual gaming such as COD Warzone. I am torn between below two laptops:

    Macbook Pro 15'' (2019) * 9. gen i7 2.6 GHz, Radeon Pro 555X, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD at $1880

    MSI Prestige 15 (Full HD) * 10. gen i7 1.1 GHz, GTX 1650 MAx-Q, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD at $1700

Primarily I was looking at the MSI laptop but after some digging I stumbled upon this Macbook Pro which is originally sold for $2600 but ATM being sold for $1700. Which would be best value for money and be more future-proof?

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Focus is in performance with good battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

As long as it isn't bulky and weight more than 2.5 kg

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    I prefer a 13'' - 16''

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Casual photo editing in Lightroom and Photoshop Casual Gaming: Examples; COD Warzone, Apex Legends, PUBG

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Reliable build quality, USB C Charging, no thermal throttling

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 04:02 AM PDT

I've been researching for a new laptop these past 2 weeks and I'm still unsure what to get.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    up to 1000€, Germany

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I'm open to suggestions but prefer a new laptop

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

build quality = performance > form factor > battery life

I want a good looking (subjective) sturdy laptop which will last me a few years. aside from classes I will probably have it always plugged in

How important is weight and thinness to you?

less than 2kg; thinkpads would be too thick imo

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    preferably 13-14"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

good keyboard (as I'm gonna write papers and do presentations on it), good build quality

the rest it not as important

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I want to use this as an everyday laptop. I will write papers, watch, stream videos and browse reddit/the internet on it. It should last me a few years (will be my 2nd laptop ever), my current laptop is slowly dying on me after 6 years.

I've been looking into the surface laptop 3, dell xps 13, macbook air but still undecisive because it is a lot of money and don't wanna make a bad purchase.

Need help to choose between 2 laptops

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 03:48 AM PDT

I'm struggling to choose between these two laptops:

    MSI Modern 15 A10M, 8 gbs ram (2666mhz) expandible up to 64gb (it's sold with 1 slot free, so with 70€ i can buy a 16gb stick), i7-10510u.

    Amazon Link here.

    950€

    PROs:

    • Faster and newer CPU (About 20% better)
    • 110€ cheaper (With a ram upgrade just 60€ cheaper)

    CONs:

    • Integrated GPU
    • No fingerprint

    MSI PS63 Modern 8SC, 16gbs ram (2400mhz) expandible up to 32gb, i7-8656u.

    Amazon Link here.

    1060€

    PROs:

    • Fingerprint
    • I don't need a ram upgrade at the moment
    • Medium-low level GPU (GTX 1650 4gb)

    CONs:

    • 110€ more expensive
    • Sold by warehouse, so not that new
    • Older and slower CPU (About 20% worse)

I'm going to use it mostly for work and daily usage, I'm a developer (Freelance developer, I usually develop mobile applications and web stuff) so I will need at least 16gb ram, but I'm struggling to choose between integrated and dedicated GPU. I don't think I will ever play (I used to, but now I'm way too busy), but a GPU could be good for deeplearning stuff and emulators.

PC about to go to place in sky

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 03:37 AM PDT

    Hi,

I previously posted in here few weeks ago as my pc was on its way out, I managed to get bit more life out of it but as I am getting all kinds of colorful screen crashes I have decided it is definitely time. It is 8 years old and so not worth me upgrading parts and with a permanent move to US from UK in next ~12 months I am inclined to go with a gaming laptop that will see me through for at least 5 years by which time I will have settled in U.S. and gotten a desktop.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      £1500-1650
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance>Build quality (not fan of over top gaming laptop look)>form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very, will essentially be a movable desktop from room to room and little bit of travel
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Only interested in 17.3 with a refresh rate of 120hz or higher
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mostly used for gaming: borderlands 3, CSGO, CIV 6 and will likely want to try new doom and cod once I get it. Will also use for MS office, PDF software, reason 10 (music production software) and maybe some Photoshop/illustrator. But I assume ganing laptop will be more than sufficient for all those programs
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Games listed above, at high to ultra settings ideally with a reasonable FPS (60–120)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I am after something that with the right carewill last me at least 5 years. Not too fussed if it wont play latest games in 5 years just as long as it can still play titles from 2020/2021
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
What are your experiences with warranties? I see most offer a year with less time if international warranty, is it worth paying bit more or does it make more sense to take it to a repair shop/ diy repairs.

I have been recomended lenovo elsewhere but I cant wait 5 weeks for shipping and prices seem bit higher than my budget. I don't want a laptop known for heating issues but will most likely underclock and buy cooling pad anyway.

2 I have my eye on are:

    https://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/asus-strix-g712lv-core-i7-10750h-16gb-1tb-ssd-17.3-inch-fhd-120hz-geforce-r-g712lv-h7007t/version.asp

    And

    https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/gaming-and-games/dell-g7-17/spd/g-series-17-7790-laptop/cng7732

Also open to other suggestions and websites to purchase from.

One final note please dont recommend helios predator as I cant stand the aesthetics or the name "predator"

Looking for a laptop between $1000 - $1500 in the U.S. for programming, web development, and occasional gaming.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 11:49 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1500 (roughly) USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
The most important thing would be the performance, then build quality, battery life, and form factor (Really open to most form factors as long as they meet my screen size).
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Thinness is fairly important, but not a huge deciding factor. Weight isn't a big issue.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
17" preferably, but I would definitely consider 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Yes, I use Inventor CAD occasionally, but not often. I run steam games sometimes like Gary's Mod or PUBG, but not very often.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I run Gary's Mod or PUBG once every few months (not often I know), and I was thinking about Rust potentially in the future.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I definitely need at least one HDMI port since I plan on running a monitor at the same time, and a good keyboard since I'll be writing lots of code. A fingerprint reader would be nice, but not a necessity.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I do some fairly heavy multitasking at times so I know more RAM would be better. I'd prefer a minimum of 16 GBs (32 if possible), but I would like the option to expand to 32 GBs if 16 GBs comes stock.

Desperately looking for a budget gaming laptop, around 800-850

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 03:34 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Total budget would be 850 gbp, i'm purchasing from the UK

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would be looking for a laptop that can last me at least longer than a year, i will be having it plugged in most of the time though as i do not travel much so battery life is not a massive priority, although i am looking to game quite often (mostly indie games like Sub Rosa, Dusk etc, but also Pubg and Overwatch).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not slightly important, like i said i don't travel much so most of the time it's going to be static on a desk or on my lap.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will not be editing but would want to be able to play games like Overwatch, L4D2 and possibly Dark Souls 3, would be playing through Steam.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't mind playin games at mid settings, but would like to at least be getting a consistent 30-40fps on games like Overwatch.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality would be great as i have had many laptops fail on me, so have gave up looking for quite a while, all i'm really looking for is a consistent, reliable gaming laptop that can stay at around 30-40fps on the games i mentioned and is relatively fast at multitasking and general browsing. I mostly game and watch Twitch streams so anything that can handle that and not break in a week is perfect.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was previously looking at the Asus Tuf FX505DT with GTX1650 and the Acer Nitro 5 with GTX1050 but both have so many conflicting opinions and reports on bad performance, awful thermals and software.

Need advice to choose between two laptops

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 03:21 AM PDT

Hi, I am a teacher in high school and I am looking for a nice laptop.

After looking around I kind of settled on buying a Lenovo S540, but I am undecided on two different configurations.

The difference between the two notebooks boils down to CPU and price.

Either the S540-14IML with an i7-10510U processor or the S540-14IWL with a i5-8265U processor. The prices are 799€ and 699€ respectively.

The i7 version has 8MB of L2 against the 6MB of the i5 version. They both have only 8GB of installed RAM, with the i7 version expandable to 16GB and the i5 one expandable to 12GB (I am reporting this mostly for completeness, but personally I do not think I will invest in expanding the RAM in the near future, so I am not considering this difference crucial).

The intended use for the laptop would be office duties, video-calls (virtual teaching) and something good for entertainment, mainly movies and web browsing. I will not game on this unit.

Given the price point I indicated, do you think this is a good choice for my new laptop and which one would you suggest over the other? Do you think the better CPU is a good investment in the long run for a 100€ price difference?

Here you can find the original spec sheet I referenced in case you are curious:

    Laptop upgrade or new purchase?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 03:12 AM PDT

Hi. I currently have an Acer Aspire E15 56-575-33BM that I got about 2.5 years ago. It runs Intel i3 7100U and has 4gb of ram. I mainly use my laptop for programming but would like to start gaming since I have nothing to do from quarantine and I have 4 brothers who constantly play my switch and ps4. But my question is; should I upgrade my ram and get an ssd or would I be better off getting a new laptop. I don't want to spend too much money on a new laptop either. I plan on playing games probably like rocket league or other games you can also find on ps4. I appreciate the help

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    £800

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

No. But would consider an unused older model that could be found on eBay etc.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

A good all rounder. Build quality, performance and form factor about the same and battery life not so important.

Not much. Wouldn't want anything bulky.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13 - 15

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Simple video editing for social media. Mainly used for work such as excel, streaming, creating a website for work and some gaming such as xcom 2 and RTS games and football manager.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)

Good keyboard would be important along with build quality.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm also able to buy in the US if there is a better laptop at a better price and budget would be around the same so $1000. Recommendations for both regions if different would be appreciated.

    Max 17 or GS66 or GE66?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 02:40 AM PDT

I've narrowed down my search to these three laptops. I intend to buy the 2070s 240hz versions of these laptops and Max-P if available.

I heard that these laptops have excellent build quality and perform really well so I'd really like to know the differences between them. I was originally going for the GS/GE but when I heard the Max has essentially the same specs in 17in the choice got harder.

If there are other laptops 17in laptops that are just as good or better than please tell

Also don't worry about the budget I just want to know which is the best one for now.

If you could provide a pros and cons list that would be great, ty.

Optishot 2 as well as possible.

My father in law has been harassing me to find a laptop to replace the 10 year old Dell Inspiron he has. I'm a software developer who has never bought a laptop for myself and know almost nothing about them but naturally this makes me the expert to ask..

His requirements are ripping terrible religious songs from YouTube and cramming them into PowerPoint presentations to play at church ALSO since this lockdown thing.. Optishot 2 who's minimum specs are as follows..

    Windows® 7, 8, or 10

Graphics Card: 256MB Adapter RAM and OpenGL 2.0 Support

    3GB Hard Disk Drive Storage

    4GB RAM

Really I just want a laptop that is capable of doing all the easy stuff like browsing and PowerPoint but can also run this game (?). I have no idea if it needs a gaming card or not tbh.

If it wasn't for this optishot requirement I would be sound.

How does the Max 17 compare to other high end laptops?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 02:23 AM PDT

The 2070s MaxP Ver. specifically. I want to see how it compared to laptops like the MSI GS66 or GE66 as I consider buying that too, and laptops like the Aero 17, Alienware m15 R2, etc. with roughly the same specs.

    Professional looking gaming laptop?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 10:25 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1,500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      refurb yes, used no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance and build quality would be higher, battery form factor less so
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Lower priority. I keep laptop on desk mostly, and don't travel with it too often
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15-17"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      gaming, rare photo editing
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Witcher 3, City Skylines, Skyrim on highest settings. I usually buy games a few years after they come out, but it would be nice to be able to play those on higher settings and/or with mods.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
webcam, decent keyboard. prefer it to look closer to a professional laptop than a gaming laptop (don't really like the multi-colored backlit keyboards, for example). also prefer to avoid laptops known for loud fan noise. when i'm gaming i usually have headphones on, so don't want to disturb others in the room if fans are super loud

Looking for a laptop to for use with professional software. Currently using an older 13" Macbook pro

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 01:22 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Absolutely $3,000 after taxes and shipping. Ideally about $2,000-$2,500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
No. Something new that will last me a good bit, but if there are options here I am slightly open.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance and build quality first, battery needs to be good as well but anything that can be replaced in a few years easily is good. Don't mind a bit of hours on battery, most places I will be will have a charger if I am there for a long time so I want size/performance/build quality first.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
It is important to be sleek and "light" due to often travel and working in coffee shops.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 inch screen
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      - Solidworks, MAYA, Blender, Adobe Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good reliability build quality and touch screen is not needed.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Windows 10, ideally something with a lot of storage space built in. Simple and powerful overall. No gimmicky design, just a regular folding laptop that is nondescript/minimal to the eye.

Anyone want to recommend a laptop for my friend?

Media consumption, business use, light gaming (Sims 4)

Likes a touch screen but doesn't require it. Prefers 15-inch display or slightly larger.

Durability is something to consider for this person as well.

Budget around $1200, maybe slightly higher.
