Posted: 25 Apr 2020 06:55 AM PDT Hey! I just started my adventure in the Linux world by downloading Ubuntu 20.04 on my laptop. You're probably all aware that this new versions has the snap store as default package installer, but I have heard a lot of mixed opinions about this format, some people saying that it's absolutely horrible and that I should never ever use it and some people saying that it's actually the best installer for some programs (like spotify for example). Now I wanted to ask your opinion: For what applications should I use the snap store and should I download any other package installer or is a plugin for the snap store the best way? Any tipps are highly appriciated! [link] [comments] |
Weird numbers in front of some config files (e.g. 50-mouse-acceleration.conf) Posted: 25 Apr 2020 05:26 AM PDT So, recently I've been getting into Linux once again and changed my distro. As a hardcore gamer, obviously I want to disable mouse acceleration and usually I do it by adding a conf file. However, I don't really know what the number in front of the conf file means. Sometimes people use 50, sometimes 95 etc. Could somebody explain? Or is there even any difference? [link] [comments] |
Is using dpkg equivalent to using apt, or the Ubuntu Software store? Posted: 25 Apr 2020 09:08 AM PDT I'm pretty sure apt and the software store are separate in that if you install a package using one, the other one won't know it exists and thus won't be able to update/uninstall it. (Please correct me if this is wrong) So is the dpkg command equivalent to using apt to install something, equivalent to using the software store to install something, or is it a third independent package manager? How can I insert the current date+time in Manjaro KDE via a preset keyboard shortcut? Posted: 25 Apr 2020 09:15 AM PDT Hi ! I'm what others might call a Linux tourist - trying things out in VirtualBox and learning things before attempting a migration of sorts. I know a few basic commands. I'm using Manjaro KDE edition and have kept everything updated to the latest stable recommended versions of the packages on my system via pacman -Syu I would like to have a keyboard shortcut (say CTRL+ALT+D) that would insert the current date and time into whichever application currently has focus - whether it's a text field in Firefox or Kate or any other GUI app. The output of the date command is fine by me, but ideally date "+%A %d %B %Y %H:%M" is the format I'd prefer. I've seen a few old guides that recommend using xdotool or xclip to paste it into the clipboard but I can't seem to get those to work. Could someone help me to achieve this please? I've added a new Custom Shortcut in the Settings applet - and in the Command/URL field entered date "+%A %d %B %Y %H:%M" but on pressing my shortcut keys in any app, nothing happens - no error msg, no popup. Any and all advice and guidance would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2020 08:20 AM PDT I know next to nothing about linux, but I heard it has better performance than windows 10. I wanted to dual boot so I can use my computer as normal and use linux for my Minecraft server. I installed Linux Mint Xfce and my geekbench 5 results (Top) were worse than what I had on windows 10 earlier (Bottom). I don't know if geekbench is a reliable way to test this but that's what I got. Posted: 25 Apr 2020 11:54 AM PDT I can't seem to fully understand the rolse of /etc/services. I'm a little confused whether it's an index file for something or an indicator of port usage? How does it differ from netstat or lsof? One of the websites I've read said it's recommended not to use it this file for port usage. Thanks ahead! [link] [comments] |
Help using an external drive on Ubuntu server Posted: 25 Apr 2020 08:08 AM PDT So i have recently installed Ubuntu server on a machine. Which has all gone great the box is up and running and working as expected. The issue i face is that i have A 4tb external HDD that i wish to use with the ubuntu box. I am new to Linux and have tried my best to figure this out, but i am really quite stuck. Hoping to catch some help from an experienced Linux user. I have the following outputs that i have generated which may be of assistance. Installed webmin and viewed drives. this shows the following output I have reconnected it to a Windows machine (to verify the drive isn't broken' and i was able to use the diskpart utility to successfully, clean, repartition and format to NTFS. When connecting the drive to the ubuntu box and running sudo fdisk -l the command executes, but seems to get stuck (the only way for me to get out of this is to re-open the connection using putty. The lsblk command shows the external drive (3.7T) the output is below. I have now even used another identical external drive and i am getting the exact same outputs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you need any further information regarding configs/ command outputs please let me know [link] [comments] |
Linux scaling is driving me crazy Posted: 25 Apr 2020 05:22 AM PDT Hello everyone. I've been a Linux user for some years now, and while I would not dare to consider myself a Linux Expert in any form, but I wouldn't consider myself a complete beginner either. I've been running Ubuntu on my Laptop as only OS for some time now, but couldn't make the switch on my main PC so far. And that's because of one big problem I'm facing with every distro and every DE I've tried so far (and trust me, I tried a lot of them). Im running a 28' QHD Samsung Monitor, as well as a cheap 24' Full HD LG Secondary Monitor (Sometimes plugging in my 50' 4k Samsung TV, but getting my to monitors to work properly is more important to me). The problem I'm facing is just that It seems impossible to run Linux on to different scaling options. Maybe it's just one simple thing that I'm missing, but neither did editing the xorg.conf file nor using xrandr/arandr help. Scaling options set with xrandr are reset after reboot, and arandr didn't seem to have the options for scaling. I hope you understand what I'm going for and it would be very much appreciated if you give me some advice. Thanks a lot! [link] [comments] |

CLI local mp3 players can't recognize mp3s? Posted: 25 Apr 2020 07:25 AM PDT Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, i3-gaps, machine is 2010 MacBook Pro I have attempted this on Cmus and MusicOnConsole, but nothing has worked. In terminal (ls), in ranger, and in the gui file manager it shows the mp3 files and in ranger if I enter while it's highlighted it plays in the gui player. But in both cmus and moc, they both can't see it!! I even tried reinstalling ubuntu but nothing has worked. Does anyone know what to do here? I really want to be able to play music from the terminal but this seems impossible! [link] [comments] |

I need help understanding mounting of drives in linux. Posted: 24 Apr 2020 11:08 PM PDT I am trying to figure out how drive mounting works. I guess this is because I had two situations in linux today that I do not think I would have experienced in windows. First, I had a background set to my desktop. I selected an image on another drive and while that drive was mounted it worked. As soon as I restarted the image was lost and the desktop was blank. because the drive was not mounted. The second situation is I was trying to set up Virtual box in linux and I have a number of ISO files stored on a drive on my computer the drive is formatted in NTFS and other files I have stored on NTFS drives were accessible so I figured if I could just use those ISO files instead of downloading new ones.. But, I tried to find the ISO file inside of Virtual box the drives they ISOs are located on doesn't show up in the drop down menu. In windows you would just have all the drives visible. In this case the drive was even mounted but it still isn't there. So, the questions I have from this situations are does everything basically have to be stored on a my Root directory? Can I have things auto mount on start up? Can programs access other drives or do they all just want to access the Root directory? I understand how the mounting works...kind of. I mean you have root and everything is under root. So, if you want another drive you have to mount it. Then it is accessed as a device directory. But, I have so many harddrives I need to find a way to get them to communicate with the system...pretty much all the time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2020 02:09 AM PDT Hey all, So for ages I have had a git folder inside my home directory but while writing a simple bash install menu, I am wondering about a few things, the rest I can solve myself but this is one I'd rather ask advice on. What is your default git folder location? Should I keep it inside my home directory or should I place it elsewhere? Is there a specific location for this? Edit: purely to pull, not push. Can I Fix Broken Icons [Xubuntu 20.04] Posted: 25 Apr 2020 01:43 PM PDT Hi, all! I was wondering if you could help me out with this little issue I keep having with my fresh Xubuntu 20.04 install. It seems like every icon package I download is half or completely broken. Now I get that most likely icons aren't broken, but there's something I need to do. I can see when choosing Icons that there is issue with loading certain category of icons. Please see screenshot for clarification as I'm probably not explaining it in the best possible manner. Is there anything I can do to make them work? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu 20.04 Second monitor is not working Posted: 25 Apr 2020 03:09 AM PDT So yesterday I decided to install Ubuntu alongside my Windows 10. Everything is now working fine except graphic card/second monitor. My setup: I use GeForce Gtx 1050 mobile, I installed nvidia-driver-440 using Software&Update. And now the problem my second monitor which is connected via HDMI is not working, by not working I meant it's all black like it wasn't connected. While looking for the solution I also found that NVIDIA X Server Settings looks like this. I don't know what is the problem and how to solve it. Other info which I can give is result of nvidia-smi command: And this how displays settings look like: [link] [comments] |

Can I increase my ubuntu partition size from ubuntu without using a USB or a CD? Posted: 25 Apr 2020 07:22 AM PDT Can I increase my ubuntu partition size from ubuntu without using a USB or a CD? App to sync cloud files to my hard drive. Posted: 25 Apr 2020 09:34 AM PDT I'm currently using gnome online accounts syncing for google drive, but a specific statistical program I use (stata) don't open databases from the cloud, just if the file is in my harddrive. To overcome this I've been syncing my files from onedrive in windows OS and making that files accessible in my linux OS, but as you can imagine, this is very annoying. There is an app for linux that sync a cloud directly to my harddrive? (meaning, it has to be fiscally available offline in my harddrive). It doesn't need to be onedrive or google drive... I can up my files somewhere. But I want to keep them safe in the cloud and at the same time accessible in my harddrive. [link] [comments] |
