Laptop recommendations for home and casual play?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 11:13 AM PDT

I have a work laptop for heavy spreadsheet and system use already.

I need to get a personal windows laptop for home use (browsing, streaming, light work, and casual gaming). I'm looking for something not too bulky to use on the couch for browsing, but I will also use it at my desk with an external monitor for games or other things. Thinking 14 inch size.

On the gaming side, I'm not looking for a gaming laptop as they're quite bulky as I don't game too much, just a laptop where I can run some games decently that I'll play infrequently (Minecraft, overwatch, CS GO).

    Budget is ~$800-1000

Best practice to prevent battery bloat and other battery issues?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 09:39 AM PDT

I've recently come across a method where laptop users remove the battery when planning to use the laptop as a stationary workstation. And only insert the battery for travel. I am curious what the best practice is, or if it really matters at all?

Which configuration is best, or when is it appropriate to use each?

    • Battery inserted, plugged in while in use, even at full charge.
    • Battery inserted, charger disconnected at all times, only used to recharge at the end of day.
    • Battery removed, plugged in whie in use.

Thank you for taking a look at my post. There are some great laptops being released this week and in early May that I wanted to keep on my radar. The Razer Blade 2020 refresh, the MSI Raider and Stealth refresh, to name a few. But I am hesitant as these machines seem to be operating with way too much power for their small chassis. It may end up being best to go for an ultrabook for productivity only, and saving gaming and heavy load tasks for a desktop.

    Specific keys stopped working

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 12:08 PM PDT

I'm figuring it's hardware, since the issue was intermittent before, and now is permanent.

    Any suggestions on troubleshooting/fixing it?

I've already tried booting on Safe Mode and updating drivers. I also opened the laptop and the connector seems fine (under the keys it looks fine too). I also downloaded a diagnostic tool from lenovo, but I don't think it works because it says the keyboard is ok even when I have it disconnected from the laptop :p

What causes keys to stopped working anyways? And why these specific ones... - it's Left Control, 5, 6, -, = and the key under Esc. (Lenovo Thinkpad)

Sager NP8968 vs ASUS Strix SCAR III

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 11:46 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy my first gaming laptop and being that it's an investment I want it to obviously last. I've narrowed my search down to the following.

    https://xoticpc.com/products/asus-rog-scar-iii-g531gw-db76

    https://xoticpc.com/products/sager-np8968-clevo-p960rn

The main difference between these two is GPU and monitor refresh rate. Sager- NVIDIA RTX 2080 MAX-Q and 144hz monitor ASUS-NVIDIA RTX 2070 and 240hz Both have 16GB RAM and i7-9750H processor with ability to customize SSD and HDD

My first thinking is the 240hz monitor seems like overkill for the gpu as I'll be playing aaa titles that will never hit 240fps. Then if I play older games that get to 200fps the human eye can't tell the difference anyway so being locked in at a 144hz max seems fine. Does anyone have a different perspective on that?

Second question: Can anyone speak to Sager customer service, I've heard they're quality is good as they just resell Clevo products, but I've heard mixed reviews of Xotic PC (only place that sells them) so if I go with a Sager I will probably buy from the manufacturer and want to make sure they're easy to work with (unless someone can speak to Xotic PC actually having good CS). Also any confirmation that Sagers are in fact, good laptops would be appreciated.

Third question: This model of Sager has a bit of a thinner build. I know they are supposed to have better cooling on most models even compared to other mid range gaming laptops, but does the thinner body make overheating more or less likely? I saw on a forum someone mention thicker bodies for less overheating, but I don't know if that has any clout. Has anyone experienced overheating with a thinner Sager (or other gaming laptop) over thicker ones?

Any insight is appreciated especially about the specs themselves and my analysis, as I'm new to this!

Refurbished laptop - older better performer, or a newer machine?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 08:00 AM PDT

Hello laptop users of reddit, I'm looking for a bit of advice for buying a refurbished laptop. I'm fairly uneducated but am looking to upgrade from a bootcamped early 2013 MacBook pro. I play fairly undemanding games due to my hardware (civ 6, fm19, Arma 3, dirt rally) and trade online on my laptop.

I've found two that have caught my eye, both for the exact same price of 850$(AUD) 500€.

    Hp envy x360 15 or a msi apache ge72 2qe

Hp envy (2018) Cpu: AMD Ryzen 5 2500u quad core 2ghz Memory: 16 gb ddr4 Graphics: AMD RADEON Vega 8 Display: 15.6"

    Msi Apache (2015) Cpu: 6th gen Intel i7 6700hq 2.6 ghz quad core Memory: 16gb ddr3 Graphics: Nvidia GTX 965M Display 17.3"

From my brief research it seems that the MSI machine will perform better for games, but the HP is 3 years newer and I don't know how much weight that should hold in my decision. Both machines are refurbished with the same condition rating and a one year warranty, and I just wanted to see if anyone here who may have more knowledge or experience had a reccomendation for me.

    Thanks so much!

Can displayport version be updated through firmware?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 11:31 AM PDT

My laptop bought last year has I7 9750 and rtx2060 using clevo chasis. It has a mini dp 1.2 and dp1.3 over usb c. Now the brand I bought it from is now selling I7 10870 and still rtx 2060.

The laptop basically looks the same. I'm guessing everything is the same expect from the cpu. But now specs on the website says mini dp 1.4 and dp1.4 over usb c.

It's using the same gpu. Does that mean I can upgrade my version through firmware? I already had the latest bios update for my laptop. How do I check the dp version?

Replacement battery help for HP Probook 4530s (UK)

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 07:18 AM PDT

I have an old HP my dads company were getting rid of, but about 6 months back it stopped turning on. I've since been abroad for a while, and after returning decided to try again. It's now turning on while plugged in, but not recognising a battery being present. So I gathered I should try a new battery and go from there

I've been told not to purchase one via eBay or Amazon, and generally warned against cheap batteries for safety reasons. Is this the case? I don't want my laptop to blow up, or waste my money

I've found these three on Amazon:

The first is the cheapest, yet somehow has a higher capacity than the last. However, the reviews say it doesnt hold a charge well. Does that mean the more expensive ones won't either? The DTK also states 2 hours charge; is this the best battery-life i'll get from a replacement?

Thanks in advance... Tech isnt really my area so i'm a little cluseless. With Lockdown here in the UK, ordering online is my only option. Any other suggestions are more than welcome. I did try looking on the HP website, but I'm coming up with nothing. If you know of any legit places to buy a replacement battery that'd be great :)

    Help upgrading current laptop

    Help upgrading current laptop

Hi everyone! So like the title says, I need some help with upgrading my laptop.

Background: I had a Samsung NT550P5C (intel i503210M, 4GB RAM, CPU @ 2.50GHz) that lasted for 6 years until a typhoon flooded the house and took it :( Fortunately, I had a old Samsung Sens that was in storage that worked fine until it also went caput (Pentium T4400, 4GB RAM, CPU @ 2.2GHz). Survived on a Lenovo Yoga tablet until a promo came up for a Samsung Flash notebook (Celeron N4000, 4GB RAM, CPU @ 1.10GHz) for $400. As you can see, all my laptops have been Samsung but only because the A/S is great here for Samsung and horribly slow and costly for other brands. They've lasted long as well!

Question: Anyway, this is my first time using a Celeron and it's horribly slow. Opening up firefox with vlc makes vlc lag which I've never encountered before. So, can I possibly open this laptop up and replace the processor/add RAM to make it function any better? Also, the current SSD is 106GB which is too small for me. This laptop supports UFS and so I have a 32GB microSD that was lying around plugged in. I've seen a post elsewhere about someone opening up this laptop to add more SSD. If I were to upgrade storage, would doing that be safer (i.e. less possibility of failure) than adding a bigger microSD card like a PNY 512GB? The picture below is what it should look like inside (from the aforementioned post). Many thanks for reading and any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Simple question: Let's say that I take out the Hdd from one laptop, and place it in one of a diff model + hardware. Would it boot up with little to no problems? At the very least, tilll I can backup the stuff?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 09:30 AM PDT

I understand that firmwares and drivers are the major difference makers, but I'm just curious if anyone have tried it. My laptop (Lenovo Y520) just went kaput, but it's mainly bcuz of a dead cpu. I need to still get work done, so if I were to just shove it up a similarly specced modern laptop (a friend's spare Acer Nitro), would it boot just fine or with minimal issues? If not, I'll have to go thru the hard road of usb sata-ing it to another working pc and try to remember how I accessed the password-protected AppData to back up everything. I'm just glad I have a whole Sunday to salvage my non-backupping idiot face.

    Should I get a Laptop & a Chromebook?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 08:59 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $2000-USA
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
8+ hour battery life (will need to use in classroom setting), needs to boot-up fast. I do a lot of data crunching in Excel. need access to the information from multiple locations. Do not like the idea of a 2-in1.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Lightweight and thin for a university/grad school setting, able to easily carry with me to my day job, and then to campus multiple nights a week, and to be used for online classroom settings.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      n/a
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I've been looking into some older games that I used to play when I was a kid (mostly things from Blizzard-i.e. Starcraft, Diablo, WoW,), age of empires, sim city, stuff like that.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Totally ignorant of that TBH. It's been a while since I've really got into gaming, but with the pandemic I'm interested in it again.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I like budgeting, so I would want the laptop to have a number pad. I love to watch movies and listen to music on my laptop and have a set of speakers that I'd like to plug into a headphone jack (a little older, but still provide great quality sound).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
As I've been doing my research, I got the idea that maybe I want to get a laptop for at home that is slightly more sophisticated to satisfy my itch for more PC gaming than I've been doing in the past, and to have a chromebook or something similar that I can travel with to and from home and still access my files. I'll (hopefully) be starting grad school in the fall for an MBA, so I will need something to take to classes for presentations, research, and data crunching. I would get the laptop now as the one i'm on currently is crapping out for all the video chatting i'm doing for socialization and the headphone jack crapped out and now my music and movies don't sound as good coming through the computer speakers. I'd get the chromebook in august.

    Thanks!

Replacement keycaps for Surface Laptop 3

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 08:31 AM PDT

Hi, I had an accident with superglue and my Laptop 3 was near me so I got a big spot of superglue on the 'Enter' key. I've searched for replacement keycaps but couldn't find any. I live in the Netherlands, so a European site will be useful, but any links you can find will be looked at.

Any tips for replacement keycaps or glue removal on the soft plastic of the keycaps will be greatly appreciated.

Fix for fans going full at all times/Not running full even in-game

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 12:59 AM PDT

Hey i had to dig deep into the interwebs to find this but i hope it can help anyone else too.

Basically I tried Hwinfo, speed fan,msi afterburner to set a fan curve but dell wouldnt allow it.

Then i tried this app, https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc/releases

My laptop's fans are functioning fine again and my temps are better :]

Just click on ... and select your laptop's model and click on enabled and set it as you want. There is an Auto option too.

NOTE: Won't work if it doesn't support your laptop im sorry ;p

Also in case that doesn't work try this

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/guide-how-to-control-fans-on-dell-laptops-under-windows.805317/

After following these instructions it should work!

Hope this helps someone because these links saved my laptop.

Is there any application about auto update driver and manage charging battery?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 04:35 AM PDT

A Dell laptop has support assist application to update driver automatically, and MSI has a charge manager that could set only charge when the battery is lower than 50%. Is there any third-part application can do that?
