Home Networking Would an old school hub help with Wireshark?

Would an old school hub help with Wireshark?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 03:29 PM PDT

I've been using Wireshark on a Windows PC to try and see where my devices are connecting to but Wireshark is not reporting much if at all from them. Also some devices seem to have their own DNS info so my PiHole (also handles DHCP) can't see the destinations either. I had an idea to plug an old workgroup hub between my ISP gateway and my network, then also plug the PC into that. The hub would repeat every packet received to all devices so the computer could then see them.. Would this work?

Strange behavior from hard drive when inside rack enclosure

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 01:31 PM PDT

I recently set up a new network rack in my basement and among the items inside is my LaCie 2big Quadra connected to a Mac mini which is my media server. I've had the LaCie for about 3.5 years and it's always worked great.

However, when I store the LaCie within my rack enclosure, the disk constantly unmounts and remounts to my Mac. Starting from a fresh boot, after a minute or so I can sit and watch the Mac desktop and see the disk unmount and then come back. It will keep doing this every so often and of course macOS complains that it was unmounted without ejecting it. I've already checked the obvious things: I tried a new USB cable, I checked that all cables were tight, firmware/OS updates, etc.

This behavior only just started when I put it into the rack. I have never seen this happen before with this hard drive. To test further, I took the LaCie out of the rack, set it up on a table, and my LaCie's mount was rock solid. The problem only happens within the rack enclosure. I now have my LaCie sitting outside on the top of the rack and things are working fine. I'm guessing that some kind of interferance from other device(s) in the rack are causing this?

    Photos:

    https://awa.lt/GwoZfe

    https://awa.lt/PCZPtr

    https://awa.lt/j2vhAa

The inventory of my rack is:

    • Tripp Lite surge suppressor
    • UniFi Cloud Key Gen2 Plus
    • UniFi Security Gateway Pro
    • UniFi Switch 16 (150W POE)
    • UniFi Switch 48
    • Mac mini
    • Philips Hue Bridge
    • Sonos Boost

Things are running just fine the way they are now, but I'd rather not keep my LaCie perched on top of the rack like this. Besides getting a new hard drive, does anyone have any input on this or a better solution? Thanks in advance!

Do I need a managed switch?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 04:55 AM PDT

My router/firewall is a PC running pfSense which only has 2 ethernet ports (1 for WAN and 1 for LAN). If I want to use VLANs, do I need a managed switch? The VLANs will only be used over WiFi (through my access points)

Improving my wireless house, what are the steps?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 02:18 PM PDT

I live in London, UK, using Virgin Media 100mb internet package. We usually have around 5/6 devices on the wifi. The package says up to 10 devices.

We have a Hub 3.0 modem in the middle floor of our 3 floor house. It is in the wifes office, and even she has issues with it - connection timing out, slow speeds (relatively).

Now I often when gaming+video call I get terrible internet, and sometimes even cuts my internet out completely.

We have 1 bar signal on our phones/laptop when downstairs or upstairs. Its incredibly weak.

What I want to know is how do I improve overall quality of signal. The house is completely wireless, and I have googled about getting a Virgin Media engineer in to fix the modem into my office (where I am more internet dependant), but it costs £99.

I was looking at getting some sort of signal booster for my house. I have no idea where to start but from what ive read is to not cheap out on it. I was looking at this particular unit:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ubiquiti-Networks-UAP-AC-LITE-Access-Point/dp/B016K4GQVG?ref_=s9_apbd_omwf_hd_bw_bT8fXD&pf_rd_r=SR0V2F7KWWFCMNTQ7QHE&pf_rd_p=6924656e-4fb9-5cf3-9069-7dd9a5842e95&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-10&pf_rd_t=BROWSE&pf_rd_i=430580031&th=1

However, should I ask virgin for some sort of technical assistant or is this somewhat common, especially when the internet is being used heavily (such as when gaming), and to opt for a signal booster?

If the signal booster isnt the way, what is? we are really pissed off cause we pay a decent amount for our wifi (£34/month) but dont understand why its so shoddy.

Whenevr I call virgin about bad internet they just say its because we live in a big house, but honestly my office is next to my wife's and sometimes it really messes about.

We cant wire ethernet around to the other offices around the house unfortunately due to the size and design of the house (that wouldnt require breaching walls etc).

Thanks for all the help and info.

Can somebody help me understand this junction box at my home?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 05:11 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I have this home junction box as shown here https://imgur.com/WwF8ahk but I am not sure how to identify what these cables are. I mean I know some of the cable types (e.g. the coax and the cat cable) but what are the others? Does anybody here know?

Also, how to identify which cable is from which port in the house? I am trying to learn how to wire the home for internet and it looks like our home already has the cables but all the ports I see are telephone ports.

Recently we got att fiber and the guy set it up such that ONT is in our office room but he did something such that in this junction box he connected two blue cables together to get the internet in our TV room where he has kept the router.

I am trying to see if there is some easy way to move the router to the junction box and then enable internet to all those blue cable ports but not sure how to proceed.

I am trying to look in youtube for videos etc but not sure what to search for.

I am not looking for answer here per se (but I welcome them if anybody is willing to help) but mostly for resources where I can start to learn this stuff and possibly change this wiring myself over time.

    thank you for your time.

Two computers in the same room but one gets 30 MB/s and the other gets 60 MB/s?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 11:28 AM PDT

I'm not sure if my motherboards onboard wifi module (Taichi Z390) is just not good enough or if it's faulty. My friends Razer laptop beats out my desktop in terms of speed connected to the same wifi at the same distance. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to try seeing if it's something system related or if I should just buy a wifi card or something.

Hooking up another router via phone jack?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 10:57 AM PDT

I want to hook up another router in my basement as an access point, I was just going to run an Ethernet down but after trying I found out it's not really possible, I have centurylink dsl and the router/modem is plugged into a phone jack, and it only works with that one phone jack. Is this because the wires just aren't hooked up to the other phone jacks? And if I were to hook them up would I be able to plug another router in? Also I found the phone wires in the celing of my basement, if I were to cut the end off of an Ethernet cable and splice into the wires in the celing would that work? I'm guessing I'd need a dsl modem to plug the Ethernet into if it does work?

    Home network- Mesh or Ubiquiti?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 02:00 PM PDT

I was looking to upgrade since I'm home and have realized that WiFi is much worse in parts of my house.

I currently have a basic router that I bought for like $40 and does basic N speeds. It does 2.4ghz and 5ghz but I don't really customize anything.

I was looking online and was recommended ubiquiti and also saw mesh systems, specifically the new mesh by netgear which is WiFi 6.

My current house is 1500 sqft and I work in the basement. We have the router unfortunately in the back corner of the house and WiFi in the front of the house or other side of the house is weak at best.

I ran Ethernet in the basement to where the TV is and have a mini switch for the Xbox and TV so steaming is fast.

If I go ubiquiti I would probably get the router and 2-3 ap's so that i can connect.

If i go mesh i would probably need 3 total ap's.

I mostly stream and want WiFi to reach most of my yard.

Also, WiFi 6? I use mostly apple, is it worth it?

I got a single band WiFi extender and I’m pretty sure it’s slowing down my internet, will something similar happen to the 5g internet if I get a dual band?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 05:44 PM PDT

So I plan on getting a dual band internet, but will that technically slow down the 5g WiFi, which I game on? Right now it seems as only the 2.4ghz WiFi is slowing down, if I get a dual band I understand that the internet speeds wont be hampered down by the product as much, or does it at all?

Basically is the 5g internet going to slow down, even if it's a little bit, with a dual band extender? Right now a single band one is slowing down the 2.4ghz internet by a lot, but will something like that apply to the 5g with a dual band extender? which is important cuz I game on 5g internet so I'm trying to get ur guys advice

    Netgear R7000 replacement recommendations

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 03:23 PM PDT

I've been increasingly experiencing problems with my Netgear R7000 and the netgear firmware and I think it's time to get a new router. I've been looking around and ASUS seems to have a good reputation. I've narrowed the choices down to the ASUS RT-AC86U.

The router will be used on a 200/20 mbps connection with about 6 wireless devices and 4 wired devices. There is normally 2-3 xboxes and 1 pc which game simultaneously alongside 1-2 netflix/twitch streams.

Are there any problems with the ASUS router or perhaps better options in the £150-£200 price range?

    Thanks.

Connecting Router outside of network closet?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 12:35 PM PDT

I just moved into a home which has its network closet in the master bedroom's closet. There is no ventilation in the room, so I've had an issue multiple times where my ERLite-3 has overheated and I've had to unplug it and let it cool down.

The network closet only has 4 data ports going to 4 separate rooms in the house. (It also has a 6-port Voice patch panel which I'm willing to cannibalize if that'd help at all).

My question is: With managed switches, is it possible to connect my ONT (in the network closet) to my Router, if I were to move the router to another room with a managed switch? I don't want to prevent use of the network port I plug the router in to - I'd like to be able to connect other devices in the room to the LAN, but I don't have enough experience with managed switches to know if this is possible with a single network port.

    Here's some visual aids:

    My current setup
    My desired setup, if possible

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Should I consider getting my own personal ISP for my computer?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:51 PM PDT

Hello, just to start off, I just recently built my own PC and I am very new to how things tick, so if I say things that don't necessarily make sense, that's why.

I like to game a lot, and we've recently had some extra family members come to live with us unexpectedly (I live at home with my parents). I would love to have a direct connection to our modem, however my computer is on the 2nd floor in my bedroom and our modem is on the 1st floor on the opposite end of the house, so ethernet cable isn't practical; so for the time being I've had to use WiFi.

However, my download speeds and ping are absolutely egregious (most likely due to the 8 other people using the internet in our home) and essentially makes any form of gaming virtually impossible, which has frustrated me to the point of considering the possibility of looking into getting my own personal internet service for me to exclusively use for my computer. I have what looks to be a cable output in my room, so I'm wondering if it would be possible to have an ISP separate from the normal home provider, but in my room through the cable output in my room so I'd be able to run a direct connection from my own modem to my computer? And if I can, would it be a good idea or would it be worth it, or should I look into a different solution?

I hope I explained myself properly

    Improving home set up

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:48 PM PDT

I am not experienced at all.

Our router/modem/wifi combo is currently at the living room. Theres another Ethernet port (unused) at a "theater" room.

The adsl/vdsl(??) Thingy is at the garage. There are two ports from the garage to both rooms.

    My plan is to install:

    Netgear DM200 Broadband High-Speed VDSL/ADSL Modem

And turn my router/modem/wifi combo into just wifi:

    TP-LINK AC1200 Wireless Modem Router VR400

I would have to get 2 small switches to accommodate for the stuff in both rooms.

    My questions are:

1- would this work? 2- what would be any safety concerns? 3- would I be able to use the router combo's extra ports as switches once its just on wifi mode? 4- any better recommendations for the modem?

Thank you very much! Again I am not very knowledgeable about this topic.

Ps on mobile so had to be short and concise.

Edit: I have an older modem/router/ wifi combo. If I turn it into a switch would it be fine? ( it doesnt output 5ghz wifi but the new one does)

    2 Building Wifi

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:45 PM PDT

So to start off my situation, my parents own their own business so they work from home in like a "pool house" type building right next to the house. The router, which is the WRT1900ac, is in the pool house which is probably like 10-20 yards away. To get wifi into the house, I ran a long ethernet cable from the router into the attic which then connects to a Netgear ex6100 on access point mode. We have a plan from Suddenlink that is over 100mbs, don't really remember how much though. Usually, this dank DIY setup I devised works pretty well but recently with the whole COVID-19, the connection has been terrible and the isp is probably overloaded. My mom and sister usually stream at night and that destroys any chance I have at gaming so any and all help would be appreciated!!!

    Ideal Location For Server

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:40 PM PDT

Good evenings guys, i have a questions trying to close off in my head. I'm looking to build a home network and want to run some network cables. Where i live the building requirements aren't dry wall the house will be full wall and i live in the tropics so the house isn't fully AC like the US/UK . I'm thinking of running cables to each room around the house etc and the base for the switch would be a storage closet. The problem is the closet doesn't have any windows or vents only the little door which is in the hall way . Will a lot of heat come from the system? Is it advisable to mount it in there? If not what would be the next best option to secure my server so the cables aren't seen in plain sight?

Basic Equipment i'm looking to get:

Are powerline adapters and PCIe/USB WiFi adapters the only way to connect to the internet when away from router?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:36 PM PDT

In a few weeks I'll be moving into a room where I won't be near the router and I'm wondering what the best way to connect to the Internet is. Also for me, I'd much prefer a consistent connection over a blazing fast speed.

Would I be right to assume that a powerline adapter would be better for this since that is a wired connection? What would you guys recommend for me?

Trying to get wifi out to the granny unit

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:35 PM PDT

We need to get a strong wifi signal out to the granny unit from the main house (about 700' and through 3 drywall walls).

I have looked into mesh wifi systems, but because I'm only going from one point to another point it seems to defeat the purpose. Ive used access points before but only ones that consistently dropped signals, plus an access point for this purpose would need to put out a wifi signal too. I don't think i can use powerline adaptor as I'm pretty sure the granny unit is on a whole different circuit from the main house.

What do you recommend for this situation? Im leaning towards doing a two piece mesh system, this is on sale right now. Is a mesh system worthwhile if only using two of em?

Can't go with UniFi, what should I be looking at for simple large home MU-MIMO routers?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 11:41 AM PDT

Until I get my own place I won't be going with a full UniFi set up (probably a next gen dream machine with AP's) and for now just need a good reliable router that has OFDMA/MU-MIMO and can cover a large house with a basement and two floors and preferably the front and back yard as well. We spend a lot of time near the pool and also in the driveway wrenching on cars watching youtube tutorials. Right now we're using the provided comcast modem/router and it is god awful.

My main device is my personal/work desktop and I'm not able to run Ethernet to it, so a strong reliable connection is incredibly important. A decent app so I can control things while I am away would be a bonus as well so I can continue to take care of it for my parents after I move out soon. They stream a ton and there are a lot of devices being used at once. We currently have a 300mbps connection.

The more I read reviews and look at B.S. marketing the more uncertain I am. I work in the tech industry so I understand how routers work and networking as a whole, so what I am looking for most here is any personal experience or recommendations. I'd like to future proof with wifi 6 but I don't think it is necessary. The only capable devices we have here are newer cell phones.

Here are some I am considering:

    TP Link Archer AX3000

    TP Link Archer C4000

    Netgear Nighthawk X4S R7800 AC2600

    Asus RT-AX3000

I'm open to the idea of a mesh system, but I haven't found any that really tick all of my boxes.

Thanks for any help in advance! Budget would preferably be under $200.

WiFi Hotspot repeating to Linksys Router

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:25 PM PDT

The DDWRT Subreddit is restricted so I'm hoping to get some help here.

I have a Verizon Ellipsis Jetpack Hotspot (no Ethernet port, just Wifi) which allows a maximum of 8 devices, connected wirelessly.

I would like to take the signal from the Hotspot and repeat it to a router, which will allow more than 8 devices, but also allow the use of the Ethernet port.

How does one do this? I need to basically make the Hotspot think that there is only "1" device connected to it, so all the other devices can connect to the Internet.

I am missing a core network concept here. Do I need static routes or NATing at Alpha? How about at each site? This started out as an exercise in BGP but I am stumbling here.

Can anybody suggest why intermittent errors at around 50% probability might occur?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:02 PM PDT

I bought Elite Dangerous for the PS4, and was getting intermittent errors when flying between star systems (failure to connect to server). Often it would succeed (say 50% of the time). I changed my wifi router to enable the Access Point feature, and now the game always seems to work.

To me an intermittent network problem would be more like a 1% chance of failure. My home internet is very reliable. All other games on the PS4 run great. Downloads are fine. What kind of network operations would be 50% likely to succeed? Even UDP should be much more reliable than that. I can't figure out how you could write networking code so badly as to fail 50% of the time.

So that router was presenting a 192.168.0.X network, in AP mode it is on the 192.168.1.X network that the VDSL modem creates.

Very strange, but I'm curious to understand the issue.

Why do I keep on getting “unauthorized connect attempts” on my Raspberry Pi NAS?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:00 PM PDT

I have a DIY NAS which is a Raspberry Pi running openmediavault through Raspbian Lite. I had SMB and Plex running on it. Through my Xfinity router, I opened ports 139, 445, 80, and 20 so that I could access my NAS from outside of my house. I had this setup for a couple months before realizing that it was slowly becoming less stable (crashing, being slow, etc.) I looked at my port forwards and Xfinity xFi said that it was blocking unauthorized attempts from random countries. I ignored it at first and moved on. Last night I finally got the time to reinstall Raspbian thinking that I just screwed up my build. However, as soon as I set up my port forwards, the same popups were coming into my dashboard on xFi. I'm just confused as to why this is happening and maybe someone can help me out. Also, I think they're different IP Afresses trying to access it everytime. TIA!

Modem Going Offline In New Apartment

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 07:52 PM PDT

Moved into a new apartment about a month ago and just had the modem that came from the ISP, I did however buy a new router. The internet would cut out every once in awhile, I would go check the modem and the "internet" icon would not be lit up anymore and the upstream/downstream would be blinking instead of solid.

About 3 days ago I got around to getting my modem from my parents house that I intend to use in the future. I figured this may also help my issue, considering it may be a faulty modem that my ISP gave me. Since I plugged this new modem in, the problem has been fairly significantly worse, it has gone out at least 3 times a day since I swapped them. Previously once a day or so. When I installed the new modem, I also installed a switch in between the router and my wired devices considering my router only had 4 available ports.

I'm relatively network savvy and I think I know the answer to this, but I want to make sure. Is it possible for something downstream from the modem to be causing it to disconnect. I'm sure it's possible, but what I really should be asking is if it's likely. The new modem is doing the same thing as the old one, upstream/downstread will blink and the internet icon light will go out, then back to normal about 10-15 minutes later and voila I have internet again.

I feel like it is probably just a coincidence that this has been happening more frequently since I swapped the modems. I'm looking for a sanity check, or any other suggestions you folks may have.

Here are the devices I have if that matters:

    Router: Tenda AC18

    Modem: Arris Surfboard SB8200

Switch: Cisco 1812/K9 (I know this can function as a router, but I have routing functionality off, so I'm just using it as a switch, I got it for free a couple years ago)

I'm going to call to have a tech come check it out, I feel like it's something in the walls or the demarc point.

    Much appreciated!
