Never had gigabit internet before, clueless on what router to get Posted: 02 Apr 2020 07:56 AM PDT I just moved into a new place where they have webpass installed in the building. I had purchased the NETGEAR R6230 (AC1200) thinking I'd be getting around 200mbps on a direct connection before I moved in, but it turns out I'm pushing 800-900! I thought the router might still work since it advertises speeds up to 300+900mbps, but I'm getting maybe 150-200mbps on the 5 GHz band and 20-50mbps on the 2.4 GHz band (tested on multiple devices throughout the apt). I want to get a router that will take full advantage of my super fast internet. I was looking at the same family of products and saw the NETGEAR R7800 (AC2600), but I really have no idea what I should be looking for given my experience with the R6230. I do want to future-proof the router a bit as well, so if the R7800 is a bit much for my current setup (800-900mbps in a 1-floor apt under 1000 sq ft), I don't mind paying a bit more if it'll last me longer. Will be using for [competitive] gaming and streaming, work (software dev who's doing a lot of conference calls these days), watching movies, all that good stuff. If anyone has advice I'd really appreciate it! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 05:26 PM PDT Apologies if this isn't the right sub to ask this. I took a peak at our fiber optic line provided by our ISP. There seems to be 2 cores, one with an orange cladding, the other having blue cladding. Only the blue one is actually plugged into the fiber media converter. The orange is just left stranded and unconnected. What do the colors mean? Why would only the blue one be plugged in and not the orange? [link] [comments] |
Would a wifi mesh system be good for gaming? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 01:43 PM PDT I am considering getting a wifi mesh system so I was wondering if it would be okay when I am playing games. The main concern for me is the latency when using the wifi mesh system. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 05:59 PM PDT I just want to say THANK YOU to Asus. Due to Coronavirus, we have a close relative who needed to move super fast. I searched in my garage and found an old Asus RT-N12 D1. It's at least 9-10 years old. I was worried about the security, so I went to check what the newest Firmware is on the Asus site: Version 3.0.0.4.380.8292 2020/03/16 HOT DOG. Thank you Asus for helping me feel a little better in the middle of all of this. [link] [comments] |
New Velop Mesh Network has MUCH worse bandwidth than old $30 RT-N12 Wireless Router. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 05:47 PM PDT The range of the old router was rather limited so I decided to upgrade to a WHW0303 Velop Mesh Router. When first hooking things up, I was happily surprised to see areas of the house get around 100 Mbps where in the past they were lucky to touch 5. Within a day, the entire network is choked. Even 1 device or sometimes as far as I can tell 0 will devour all bandwidth. If for example, the living room television is using the internet for on demand, the rest of the house, even the devices connected to other nodes, will fall to 1-5 Mbps. The old router, while having short range, never gave any bandwidth problems, even if 3-4 devices were streaming HD video. This bandwidth issue is unbearable in a household that is hungry for internet while quarantined. I have tried messing around with prioritized devices and it doesnt seem to work. Even when hooked up via ethernet to the primary node, my desktop only recieved around 5 Mbps, even when prioritized. I am trying to decide whether to return these mesh routers, but first I'd like to try and do some troubleshooting. Is there anything I can do to try and troubleshoot this problem on my own, or do I need to get in contact with Linksys? Edit: Could it also just be everyone demanding a lot while in quarantine? I have cable internet so I'm wondering about it just being unfortunate timing. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 02:39 PM PDT Hello all. Looking to replace AT&T's gateway with my own router. (I'm aware I'll need a switch to do this) I need help choosing between these two routers. Any thoughts? NETGEAR: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C65K9H9/ TP-Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NF3K74H The most obvious difference is the TP-Link appears to have WPA3 and "Virtual Server", which sounds interesting but don't know if I can't do the same thing with the NETGEAR. The TP-Link also apparently has another internal antenna but I doubt that will make much difference... [link] [comments] |
TP-Link Archer C9, a good option in 2020? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 02:25 PM PDT TP-Link Archer C9 v5.0, advertised as 1300Mbit/s (5GHz) + 600Mbit/s (2.4 GHz) with a cost of less than 100Euros. WAN - 300Mbps Is it still worth to buy it, or maybe something better from ASUS in the same price range (85 Euros - 150 Euros). I have a great experience with TPLink routers with OpenWRT, in the last 15 years but maybe there is better? [link] [comments] |
Can I give my Work laptop more bandwidth at home? Posted: 02 Apr 2020 08:24 AM PDT I tried to search Reddit but it did not get me close to my question. I have a work laptop and I have to use a VPN to get access to their network drives from home. I've been working remotely and will be for the next little bit. It is Fortinet client installed on the desktop so the whole computer runs through the vpn for everything once connected. Now we've been using Microsoft Teams for conference calls. Those calls are also being ran through the VPN - this creates a bit of a bottleneck. My wife is at home as well and she watches Netflix. I'm looking to upgrade modem/router/AP to get the results I want. So I want to be able to dedicate a larger amount of bandwidth to my work laptop whenever it's connected to my home network (I only use it for work - I've got other personal laptops/servers to tinker with). I think that will improve my conference call quality despite it being ran through a VPN. Also I am hardwired to the router. Could this be achieved through QoS? What do I specifically Need to look for feature wise in a router? I have Xfinity 200mbps down and 20 mbps up. Currently using an Arris SBG6700-ac with 8 channels down and 4 channels up. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 04:24 PM PDT So I just purchased an Arris SB8200 activated it on comcast and all that easy stuff. I plug my router in Linksys Max stream 1900 and no internet. I release/renew Routers ip and a power cycle Still nothing. Decide to plus directly to modem internet is good IP address seems good to go but the gateway looked odd. I plug it into my browser and bam I'm in some random qnas vpn box. It's not mine I dont own one. I try admin as password and username it logs in... there's tons of what looks like pirated movies and other stuff on it but whatever. It's not letting my router connect to the internet. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 07:48 PM PDT Hi! I'm trying to put together a small lab, Ive got an assortment of second hand gear, and Im pulling my hair out trying to get something setup. Im clearly missing the basics of how networks actually work in real life. What Ive got: An old enterprise firewall EdgeRouter a 24 port switch An old computer running vmware All of this in a closet. How its currently plugged in: Wireless extender->firewall->Edgerouter->Switch->Old computer. Basically I was trying to get everything plugged in so I could go through the management interfaces and learn how to put things together. Im using a network scanning utility to find the devices. What ends up happening is I can see maybe one of the devices, never the computer, but one of the networking devices. And frustratingly, its not even the one that the cable coming out of the WAP connects to, its one of the networking devices down stream. Ive even switched up the order, just to find the same behavior with a different device. Sometimes I can see 2 devices, sometimes just 1, and I've got no idea why. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Confused about filter needed for MOCA network. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 07:40 PM PDT I am preparing to set up a MOCA network and have seen I need a filter. Amazon seems to offer a bunch of different ones and most mention TiVo or cable. Can anyone recommend the one I need? [link] [comments] |
Converting phone lines to ethernet with fiber internet Posted: 02 Apr 2020 07:40 PM PDT Hey guys, this is probably going to be eyeroll level stupid for some of you, but I have had a hard time online getting a direct answer, so I thought I'd try here. So, my setup is AT&T gigabit fiber internet. Currently I have it going from their gateway to a netgear router. Works fine for areas in the house that get good signal. What I also have are phone lines run throughout the house that have been run with cat5. I'd love to be able to use this existing cabling to have hard wired internet where possible. My phone lines enter from outside the house, and it looks like are in the same box as the AT&T fiber line. The fiber line goes through the exterior wall of my house to the garage, which is where the ONT is. It looks like the ethernet from the ONT then exits through the same hole in the wall and goes back to the box. I'll post pictures in a bit. My main question is, where does the ethernet switch fit in this setup? Do I have to run the ethernet from the ONT into the switch, or does it have to go directly to the gateway? In that case, do I just pop the gateway in the garage, and run from one of the lan ports on it to a switch outside in a box? Thanks for the help and hopefully this hasn't been too nonsensical [link] [comments] |
Little advice on home connection Posted: 02 Apr 2020 07:38 PM PDT Greetings all, My buddy has been having issues with his home internet. He's currently paying for 200mb down 6 up from Xfinity. He stated he was getting about an actual 30-50down with a few different speed tests. He's testing most of his clients and it seemed to be averaging out on all clients. So we decided to get a better modem/router (he has nothing special on his network). So we went with the Motorola MG7700. He retested after installation and his Wifi speeds were maxed out at 200, but his xbox seems unable to get past 99 on a wired connection? He also tested it on wifi and got way better speeds. I logged in to his modem and tried to find something, but their interface is pretty basic as for changing settings and what not. I told him to have comcast ping his box, but I believe they just gave the runaround, and plus a tech can't come out with this corona stuff. I am unsure what to think of this, since I am not there and only trying to help via remote desktop. I'd love some ideas or opinions, I am very familiar with networking I just can't seem to place my finger on it. And the fact I'm not there physically. I wanted to say it was a comcast issue...but from all the information I gathered something isn't making sense. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Google Onhub Router (Asus) issues... and need suggestions. Posted: 02 Apr 2020 07:00 PM PDT I'm paying for 500/500 speeds with Frontier. I am currently using the Google OnHub Router (Asus) model. It's connected to the router Frontier loaned me by Ethernet cable. I disabled wifi on the original router so it won't interfere with the signal of the google router. It's been 3 years now since I've been doing this set-up. I haven't really been satisfied with it. I just upgraded the internet speeds last summer coming from 50/50 and didn't really notice the speed issues of onhub router until after I upgraded my wifi speeds. I haven't been getting the speeds I am paying for on my devices. I get around 40/60 speeds on my desktop pc and my apple products (Macbook 2015, iPhone 11ProMax) are getting around 120-250 when I look at the speed tests and I am using the devices literally 6 ft away (about 1 Ryan Reynolds length away). The Google Wifi app says 424/390 speeds in the built in speed test. I'm looking to replace this router because I always have to constantly turn off my wifi on my iPhone because Tmobile data is faster at loading things a lot of the time. And my other family members at home complain that the internet isn't reaching the back of the house well and is extremely slow-- plus they have to go online schooling now since this corona virus stuff is going on. I wanna upgrade my system to make use of the speeds my household is paying for... I've been lurking and narrowed it down to-- LINKSYS VELOP AC6600 (3 Pack) vs Orbi RBK50 (2 pack) vs Google Nest Wifi (2nd Gen) vs Eero (non-pro) -- reason why is because I found most of these used or refurbished for around <$200. Can't afford much right now. The only one I can get for new is the Nest Wifi which is around $200 right now. I don't really care about tinkering too much i just want something that works. At first I was thinking about getting another OnHub on ebay to extend its range but I am already having speed issues with it so I decided to just get a different router all together-- By the way we have 19 devices connected to wifi in the house but we are only 5 people in the house now since my father passed last year. We only use one device at a time and mostly everyone just stream movies/tv/videos online --- at most 2 tv's on at the same time. I'm the only one in my household who downloads large gb files, plays games, and uploads videos to youtube. The rest just browse social media. Wifi is centered in the middle of the living room at the center of the house but my family wants it to reach near the garage because they have another room near there (that'll be used for studying) that isn't getting any signal. My house isn't that big-- my backyard is bigger than my house, lol. My house is about 1,268 sq ft and in total with garage/backyard it's 7,756 sqft. [link] [comments] |
How do I disable the router/NAT functions on my gateway? (Spectrum) Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:56 PM PDT I just want my gateway to act just as a modem since I already have a good router. The current setup is causing double NAT/strict NAT issues on my Xbox One. I think I already figured out how to login to both the ISP gateway and my Netgear router. Which settings should I change to get the gateway to act just as a modem and let the router do the rest? The model is the Ubee DVW32CB if that helps. [link] [comments] |
Retaining existing IP address assignments with new gateway router Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:55 PM PDT Some of the networked devices in my home network have static IP addresses while the majority of them got their IP addresses from the DHCP server in my gateway router. If I replace the gateway router with a new one where the DHCP server scope/range is set the same as the current one, is there something I can do on the network to get it to "learn" the IP addresses currently in use and not issue them to the next device that requests a lease? For example, run a nmap ping scan on the subnet? I'm ok with these devices getting new IP addresses when their leases expire and am mainly trying to avoid interim conflicts as mobile devices get off and on the network. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Started a final year project about networking and I have no idea about it, now Im paying Posted: 02 Apr 2020 12:54 PM PDT You can be a gentle person and read all of this or just go to the end of the story to see the most important question. I wanted to learn something new, but now Im struggling to find answers without a mentor. First this is all about my student final year project there id no benefits just pain and learn I know this is not the right place but Im confused I just need to know what should I search on google to find the things I need to learn because I have no idea what should I search fore.. Well, we are setting up a little data center on my faculty I unpacked an powerEdge R440 and I have to link it with a data storage but this is another story.. I installed Centos8 I checked all cases I even have the GUI but now due to corona we have to work remotely and I will log from distance, my teacher will provide me the IP, so I have to work in the terminal on the server now that's it? I have to install a virtualization tool because we want to run many vm and make every vm for a project ( for other students they have to host there projetcs (websites) I choosed virtualbox as a virtualization software ( should I ? Still didn't install it yet on the server Is it a good choice? ). So I want to understand how can the people connect to the vm I will create? All VMs will be based on Ubuntus ( I have to create each VM on my virtual box here on my windows and import all this on the server I guess? There is a better way? Can't create themes right now in the server and I don't wanna waste time ) Also I have to do the configuration to let people connect on this VMs from outside I mean not from the LAN how could I do this ? Sorry for my english and all this [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:51 PM PDT Hi all, first time HomeNetworking post. I recently moved into a new apartment with a friend. We bought this router/modem combo (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y3XQ8M9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) and got Xfinity's 1gbps plan. My roomie wants to keep the router in his room, and have me run a 125ft CAT6 cable from his room to mine.... Our Apartment also has what looks like a centralized-hub- CAT5e Ethernet Jack. Each room also has dual input CAT5e ethernet jacks in the walls. If we run the Combo into the main hub, that will essentially route out to the other jacks in our room, correct? I feel this option would be better (even though it's a cable grade down,) due to the router being in our living room/kitchen, while our rooms have hard wiring. Our Apartment is LONG and sequential, and is set up like so Entrance--[Roomate's]---{Bathroom]-[Washer/Dryer]---[My Room]-----[Kitchen]-[Living Room] So, which way might be the best? Thanks for reading loves, stay happy and healthy plzzz [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 02:59 PM PDT I read the purchase guide, but it is several years old. Is there an updated list somewhere of recommended home network hardware? Like many, I'm working from home now. Really tired of resetting routers and modems all day. I once heard someone suggest buying enterprise grade hardware even though you're a home user, because the home grade hardware is just too cheap to be reliable. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:42 PM PDT We live in a very new apartment - built in 2018. There's a coax outlet in the living room where we have Comcast internet - using a rented router from them. The signal is terrible in my bedroom. We pay for 275 mbps and in my room I can barely get 7. I have a computer in my room that I like to use for gaming. There is a phone port in the room which I've unscrewed and discovered what I think is Cat5 cable behind (there's doubly as many wires than are in use, just wrapped around the outside of the cable backwards). Could I change this to an Ethernet port and plug directly into it to my computer, or would I need another modem/router? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:33 PM PDT Our modem doubled as a router, it emits one 2.4 and a 5.2ghz wifi signal. We also have Google home wifi hub, which acts as a router I think. Could the modem be blowing our speeds since we don't use it and it uses signal? [link] [comments] |
Network Addressing (help needed) Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:29 PM PDT Hi all! I'm currently studying for the CompTIA net+ through a college class and have run into a little roadblock concerning network addressing with IP addresses and subnet masks. IP- 186.13.23.110 Subnet- 255.255.255.0 I'm confused to why the network address is 186.13.23.0. Is 186 not a class B IP addresses with the format N.N.H.W (network, host)? Would the answer not be 186.13.255.0 or even 186.13.0.0? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Apr 2020 12:13 PM PDT Hi guys, sorry if this was asked before I have a bit of a unique situation where I live and was wondering if there is some creative ways around it Basically speaking there are two different ISPs i can connect to at my home address
I was wondering, since internet is quite cheap here and I can afford paying for both. if it would be possible to run a home network that uses both What i mean is for example : Have the media server connected to the faster, unreliable ISP, while having it connected over local network and available to the rest of the computers which would be connected to the slower ISP, for normal browsing and gaming etc) for WiFi, i have a mesh network set up, which i assume could only connect to one of these at a time, right? i'd just have to manually manage that which is fine. Is it possible to set up something like this? is there a more creative solution? or should i just buckle up and go for the slower ISP? [link] [comments] |
Trouble disabling Media Devices on Local PC Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:05 PM PDT As the title suggests, I am having trouble disabling the shared media devices which are located on the local PC (Battle-Stations), from which I took this screenshot: The old PC name was "Athena" and the User was "Bones", there was a second user with the "live.ca" account that I have just removed/deleted. The media devices still show up for both. I've tried changing my sharing preferences and deleted a lot of the remaining file structures from the deleted live.ca user account but nothing seems to change the Media Devices. Are there some folders still being shared from the old PC name or the deleted user account? I don't just want to delete the shortcut, I want to turn off this path being shared, then allow network devices to access my videos folder on the Battle-Station PC. Please help! [link] [comments] |
Rewire wall jack for ATT "Internet 50" Posted: 02 Apr 2020 06:02 PM PDT Hello All! I recently bought my first house that is a real fixer-upper, and when we purchased internet ATT had to come out and run new wire from outside the building into my house. He put a "surface mount" box on the drywall and drilled it through the wallplate. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the only nearby outlet was both ungrounded and switched, and wasn't really an ideal location. I have since re-ran the ethernet wire, and bought a new wall plate, in-wall box, and AB ethernet jacks. I tried wiring up the outlet (formerly labeled as "broadband" on the ATT plate), but couldn't figure out how to wire it properly with the new plate. I cannibalized the existing ATT plate and rewired how it was, and am now able to get internet access in a much better location, but I am still using the ATT branded plate. Additionally, I'd like to have a multi-jack wallplate so that I can have my the ATT modem present, and then run ethernet cables through the house. TL;DR: How do I wire incoming wire into my wall plate for ATT "Internet 50" without using their branded plate? Is it even possible? [link] [comments] |
