    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

The absolute maximum I could spend is $750 USD in the US

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

As long as it's not trashed, sure

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, Quality, then Battery Life. Anything else is not important

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd like to be able to carry it without much duress, but not really that important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15'in minimum

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming and school. The games I mainly want to run are Dragon Age Series and The Witcher series

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'd like to be able to run Dragon Age with at least basic graphics.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

As much storage as possible, and at least 3 usb ports

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I really just want to be able to play my games and do work without my laptop completely lagging.

I need a laptop that will last all 4 years of college

    Posted: 16 Jun 2022 01:45 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I have around $2k usd I can spend but I would love to use less

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not really unless it's still a good quality laptop

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I just need something that I can program on and will last 4+ years. I don't want the battery to crap out and be stuck on a charger or have to replace it

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Something light weight would be nice but if I have to go with something heavier I will for better quality

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I only really play games like Minecraft, terraria, and other games that are light on graphics

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

3 or more USB ports would be preferable

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'll be needing the computer for computer science in college and I was suggested to look at the Microsoft surface laptops. I don't know anything about laptops or if I should be just looking at the ram and memory space.

My college requires 16gb of ram and said not to get a MacBook

Suggestions for a work laptop that can play games

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 12:51 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around $1200 or around Rp.17.000.000 rupiahs

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

No, but laptop from 2019 or 2020 is fine

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would like an ultrabook that has color accurate screen, with minimal design, with decent amount of port (usb A, usb C, sd card reader, etc), and most importantly upgradeable dual channel memory.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't really care, but it would be nice if it below 2kg.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14 or 15, 17 inch is too big.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'm going to run basic adobe software like photoshop, illustrator, after effects, etc. But i also like playing game like genshin and warframe.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mainly genshin, warframe, and guilty gear. Low/mid (desirably mid) setting smooth 60fps. Also want to emulate 3ds games, but not my main priority.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Desirably metal build (aluminium chassis) but plastic is still fine. Finger print reader is a must, basic necessities like webcam and numpad is nice, but if it has non, it's fine.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I need a laptop like Asus Vivobook Pro 15 Oled, but that model doesn't have upgradeable memory, and only 1 slot of ssd.

(I'm sorry for my bad grammar/English, and I'm sorry if I look clueless because I'm fairly new to asking to reddit.)

Laptop for school (sixth form) UK - under £900

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 12:34 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
£900 - £1000 maximum, however if anything fits my brief for less it would be perfect
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I would like a long battery life, lightweight laptop with adequate performance to have multiple documents open but not too light so that it overheats or cannot handle too many tasks. Build quality is also important however not a massive priority.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I will be carrying it around on a daily basis, so I would not want it to be too heavy, however I dont want it to be too thin to restrict performance and I would like a good range of IO ports.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      No larger than 16'
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I may game on it, however only light games such as CSGO or maybe minecraft if im feeling exciting. I would mostly run office, several chrome windows and other less processor heavy tasks such as spotify and itunes
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
CSGO at 60 fps on 1080p
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would like to have a fingerprint reader, if possible and good cooling options. I also would want to have a port so that i can connect it to a monitor
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
As said previously, I may want to connect my laptop to a monitor which is 4K, so I would like that to be possible. I'd also not like to get a macbook, as I have used them before and I really cannot stand their software

    Thanks in advance!

    Asus Vivobook Pro 16X (N7600PC-KV034T) VS. Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro 16ACH6 (82L500TSMB)

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 12:28 AM PDT

    Hello guys

I'm trying to choose a laptop which will mainly be used for media consumption and work (citrix workspace). For work I'd like to be able to work outside when it's too hot in my office, so a bright screen would be nice. some occasional gaming would be a plus but really not important.

Right now I'm looking at two laptops priced at 999€ which have some tradeoffs.

    Vivobook Pro 16X:

    - 120Hz, 500 nits screen

    - I5 11300H + Geforce RTX 3050

    - Windows 10

    Ideapad 5 Pro:

    - 60Hz, 350 nits screen

    - Ryzen 5 5600H - shared gpu

    - Windows 11

They are tied on ram (16gb) and SSD (512gb)

Based on these specs I would say the Vivobook beats the Ideapad, since the screen should be a lot brighter and smoother, and it would allow me to play some light games on it. However, I know a lot of people aren't a fan of the vivobook build quality and the Lenovo seems to have a better CPU.

Suggestions or things to keep in mind are very welcome.

    Thank you

How do you decide between laptops that have different uses, like work vs gaming, given that you can't have one laptop that does both?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 12:09 AM PDT

I have limited money set aside for a new laptop and initially wanted to get a laptop that does it ALL but I realized it's impossible. Initially was trying to get a laptop that does gaming, is good for work, and also for video rendering, but that's basically three laptops in one.

Then I narrowed it to two types, but still the same problem: You basically can't have a quiet and light gaming laptop (a Lenovo Legion), nor can you play good games on a work/school laptop (e.g. a Lenovo Yoga with no dedicated graphics card).

So right now I'm planning to buy a work laptop while saving money for a gaming one by the end of the year, but I figured asking around and see how other people deal with having to choose.

So far the answers I've gotten include:

Buy a gaming laptop cause they're very quiet and cool when not under load, with the only issue being their heavier weight and less battery life.

Get a laptop with discrete GPU that you can turn off when not gaming.

Get a light laptop for work/business, and invest into a eGPU if you want to game later.

Laptop Stand - Laptop as a Desktop

    Posted: 17 Jun 2022 12:09 AM PDT

I have 3 laptops, which I use as mobile desktops...

    • MBP assigned to me by work, 15" 2021
    • MBP personal for music sampling 15" maxed out, 2022
    • 3080 Aero maxed out 15" for casual gaming

I have a 72" desk with 2x 27" 144h monitors on a KVM switch from Level 1 Techs. I also have a DAC and pre-amp for music while I code or I'm not in meetings/gaming. Basically my desk space is fucked and my laptops are not getting adequate airflow. Does anyone have suggestions for laptop stands for 3-4 laptops (4th is a desktop but not worried that connection) that may run 24/7 (mining)? Or should I go with something custom? I'm using a couple stands from amazon and it's a nightmare. I'm in cable management hell. I have 3 headsets/headphones. The KVM is not cutting it.

Best 2-in-1 laptop that is lightweight, durable, and good for programming?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2022 02:34 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Looking to spend less than 1.5k USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Looking specifically for a 2-in-1. I mostly want to use this to bring to my classes and take notes with a whiteboard app, as well as do homework on which primarily will be some light programming on editors like Visual Studio Code. Battery life should be at least 8 hours and build quality should be strong.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
A laptop under 4 pounds is my goal.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 inches or under.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      None of the above.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      NA
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touchscreen, long battery life, no flimsy keyboard, and one that lasts at least 3 years. A fingerprint scanner would be nice but not required.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would very much prefer to have a laptop that has 16GB of RAM at least. I would also enjoy a sharp and high-quality display, and I have no preference between Intel and AMD.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I would prefer 15" or more.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
It would mostly be for gaming, also some school work.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'd like to play Sims with quite a lot of mods at relatively good graphics and some older games.

    $1500, higher if important [US]

    Posted: 16 Jun 2022 10:21 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

-$1500 USD. Would love to spend less, but willing to spend around $2k if it is highly recommended. Moving to Japan for a year and won't have have a job (wife will) so looking to get back into coding. Price is a bit scary, but necessary.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

-Sure, why not. As long as it is trusted. I am not familiar with this market.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-Not sure what form factor means. Or build quality really. I care more about it working and doing it's job. Battery life doesn't matter as long as it works fine plugged in.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    -Doesn't matter.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    -N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-Mostly just Unity programming 2D games. Maybe some 3D, but more akin to Paper Mario. I only have a year of experience so I expect to go slow.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    -Just TableTop Simulator please.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    -Nah.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-Worried about price. Want something that will get the job done and hopefully be really good for a few years to match my level of my coding. Would love something cheaper to match my coding level. Mentioned higher limit due to my lack of knowledge of what is necessary, but would prefer just getting a better, longer lasting computer when I get back. (Unless laptops are great for that. I do prefer the mobility)

Lf: Laptop I can use for art/animation, Live2D, and light gaming

    Posted: 16 Jun 2022 04:17 PM PDT

Pretty much before I get into it I'm planning to get a laptop that I can bring around with me and also bring my drawing tablet around with for work (I do animation and also use Live2D to rig models but I don't use those models myself) I also want to be able to play a few games with friends but that's nowhere near the main focus

I don't know much about laptops so some help would be really appreciated

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1000 - $1500 (I want to stay in this range but I do have money to go over if needed)

Are you open to refurbs/used? I'd rather not

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance and the ability to bring it around matters quite a bit for me, battery life is not as important since I usually have things I need to plug in otherwise, and build wise I just want it to not crumble to pieces when I touch it

How important is weight and thinness to you? I mostly walk so a lighter laptop is preferred but I can handle slightly heavier laptops

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -Clip Studio paint/other art programs -Live2D Cubism -Adobe After Effects (rarely)

-Games like minecraft, don't starve together, Project diva, mostly lower graphic games

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm not worried about the performance of other games but I do want to play modded minecraft (not like rlcraft more like pixelmon) at a good framerate

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? none of these matter too much for me, and I really don't want a touch screen because I have a drawing tablet (with a screen)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

An HDMI port is required for my drawing tablet and I would prefer a non Mac but other than that I'm pretty open to rly anything

-Need to buy new docking stations

The 835 G8 is tempting both because of AMD Ryzen and beeing a newer model. But inclined to go for the 840 G6 - it's cheaper, have the Office package that would be nice, and I can use my Slim docking stations. But maybe it's a little bit stupid to go for an older model.. What do you redditors think?

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
5-6000NOK + 1000NOK for upgrading to a bigger SDD, buying in Norway

    Are you open to refurbs/used?
    -Absolutely

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? -Will prioritize build quality, and prefer HP Elitebooks

How important is weight and thinness to you?
    -Not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
-Will prefer 14 or 13 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-Mainly web and Office. Some photo editing and maybe some light video editing. No gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    -Reliable build and good keyboard.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-Would be nice (money saving) if I could use my HP Ultraslim docking stations

Suggest a Laptop - Willing to pay more for quality and battery

    Posted: 16 Jun 2022 11:55 AM PDT

I don't have high performance requirements, but I'd like something I wont regret in a couple years. I will often have it connected to a monitor, so please state if it has the outputs or if I need to buy a docking station.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    · Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Up to $1000, preferably cheaper

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No need for 2-in-1 or anything fancy. Must have long battery life, with good quality and performance.

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not ultralight, but portable. No crazy gaming setups if overly heavy.

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    17"

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No editing. Might play some occasional gaming, not a priority.

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Games like Half-life 2, Portal. Mostly older games.

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

SSD, enough RAM that I'll never run into problems

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I want a laptop that is known to be reliable with a decent battery. I don't have many high demand uses, but I'd like a little bit of overkill just for performance.

    Performance vs I/O?

    Posted: 16 Jun 2022 03:41 PM PDT

Have two variants of the ASUS Vivobook 15. One is i7 with 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports whereas the other is Ryzen 9 with no Thunderbolt ports and one USB C 3.2. Everything else is the same with 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, OLED screen, 63Wh battery, Nvidia 3050 graphics card

Would love to know what people think. I feel like I'm putting too much emphasis on the Thunderbolt ports but they are so convenient in comparison.

Need a new laptop for work, basic tasks, numpad necessary

    Posted: 16 Jun 2022 03:36 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1000 USD, can possibly move up to $1200 if absolutely necessary, but would rather not

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery needs to at least come close to lasting an 8 hour work day. Performance just needs to be able to handle having multiple Excel Workbooks, browser tabs, and PDFs open at once. Don't care about form factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      15.6", but it's not a deal breaker.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      No

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Need a numeric keypad, and an HDMI port

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My current laptop is moving sluggishly, and sometimes crashes when trying to web view large PDFs. Laptop is mostly for work, and my job is like 100% Excel, downloading and viewing PDFs, web browsing, and web viewing PDFs. That's it. Only other thing this laptop would be used for is YouTube when I'm bored while working. I work from home a lot of the time now, but occasionally do have to work on location where there is no charging available, so battery needs to last at least 6 hours.

I am looking for a gaming laptop. Yep.

    Posted: 16 Jun 2022 02:11 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I reside in the US and my budget is around $1000, but preferably below.

    • Are you open to refurbs used?

If it's a good deal then sure. But I rather buy a brand new one.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I don't really care about the other features but I want it to have a high performance and decent battery life. Also, I want it to last long and not die after like a year.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I want the weight to be on the low end if possible but it's not that important, the same goes for thinness.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I am prioritizing gaming and I do not edit but I'd like to use it for school. I am looking for a laptop that can run Genshin Impact, Splitgate, Valorant, Yandere Simulator, etc.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I've listed the games above. I'm not knowledgeable about settings and stuff but I'm fine with anything as long as the game doesn't lag. Mediocre graphics is fine as long as the performance is good.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touchscreen would be cool. I don't care about the rest.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thank you guys in advance! :]
