Posted: 06 May 2020 11:46 AM PDT I have an old laptop that I have converted to Linux, but I still have my main laptop running windows 7 and I hate it. The major reasons I'm still putting up with it is Microsoft word and Excel are so natural to me. Writing grad papers with the citations is so easy in word and I am nervous about converting to libreoffice. How successful have people been about writing grad papers on a Linux machine? Posted: 06 May 2020 01:20 AM PDT I'm starting to loose faith in Archlinux… A week ago I booted the system and all of a sudden Timeshift doesn't work anymore (hangs at the end and fans ramp up) Also other minor issues I have are: Can any of you help me with anything mentioned here? Posted: 06 May 2020 10:06 AM PDT Just moved from Windows 10 to Pop!_OS 20.04 for a few days now and everything has been fine except throttling on my laptop (Asus FX505dy). There are no bios settings for the fan modes, most likely they're controlled through Armoury Crate on Windows. I found a potential fix: https://github.com/leonmaxx/asus_fanmode but it requires kernel 5.6 or later. For below kernel 5.6, I was directed to these two patches: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/11292813/ https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/11292815/ But i'm quite confused how to progress from here and apply these patches? I've been looking for guides online but i'm lost at this point. Is this something relatively easy to do or am I better off moving to another distro (probably manjaro) with updated kernels? Reinstalled Ubuntu 20.04, ended up with 2 home directory. Posted: 06 May 2020 09:13 AM PDT Have been having some problems with Ubuntu since 19.10 and 20.04 so I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 20.04. Steps I took are: Made a live USB and boot up with it Chose reinstall Ubuntu, then was prompted missing efi partition Created EFI (500mb), root (15gb) and swap (16gb) Problem is when I reboot the system, there are now 2 Ubuntu options on GRUB menu and choosing Ubuntu boot me into new Ubuntu but with only 16gb available in the home directory and there's another home directory of the old Ubuntu. How do I 'merge' the 2 or something similar? I'm more than willing to provide more information if needed. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Can't Install Minecraft due to "No installation candidate" Posted: 06 May 2020 01:24 PM PDT Hi all, I am trying to install minecraft on debian 10. I have both git and build-essential installed already. First off, I try to install minecraft with the link from minecraft.net and get a long list of missing dependencies. I take all of the missing dependencies and plug them into the sudo apt-get install line with the file for minecraft as well. Now I get a whole list of errors saying:
for every package on the list. Also, I get a string of errors saying:
Does anyone know what installation candidate I should get for this or what I should do at all? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
LE cert issues and pfsense for all computers on LAN for a specific website. Posted: 06 May 2020 12:54 PM PDT Issues with something caching letsencrypt certs and reporting them improperly to all computers on my LAN. I have a pfsense box and it does have squid proxy running. I have Linux workstations and tablets and have tried with a Windows 10 install where no prior access to that site has taken place. When I say no prior access to that site I mean the install is so new that it has never been to that site. I am using Firefox on all of these machine (Linux, Android, and Windows). When I access the site with my cell on cellular data I have no issues. What happens is that I get a message that the site's letsencrypt cert is wrong. When I view the cert it points to my other domains (I'm using wildcard certs). To maybe simplify: 1) pfsense router, w/squid (tried with it turned on and off). 2) Any OS when I access the site I get the site insecure even though the site has letsencrypt wildcard certs. 3) When I access on my cellphone's web browser I do not get the site insecure warning and when I check the cert it is for that site. 4) When I access via any computer inside the LAN I get the site insecure and when I look at the cert it is a cert for a different site, my site(s) (as I'm using wildcard certs and that cert covers multiple domains). 5) Turned off squid temporarily and also rebooted the pfsense router. I'd write this in the /r/pfsense but they appear to have limited access to post. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Can anyone help me figure out how to get a Linksys WUSB54G USB wireless adapter to work with Ubuntu? Posted: 06 May 2020 12:43 PM PDT I'm down to one working computer, it's running Ubuntu (I'll edit this to include the exact version once I get access to the machine again). The only way to connect to my home Wi-Fi with it is via a Linksys WUSB54G Ver. 4. It shows that I'm connected to my home Wi-Fi, but it doesn't actually connect and work. Can anyone walk me through setup/configuration for this USB Wi-Fi adapter? I've been having problems when I try to follow stuff I found online. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2020 10:27 AM PDT So I am running Kubuntu 18.04 LTS, and since 20.04 LTS came out I've been seeing a not of good about it. But im curious if there's any downside to upgrading from 18.04 to 20.04. Will some of my software not work anymore? Will my graphics drivers need updated and not work? Etc. [link] [comments] |

Command works in terminal, but not in shell scripts Posted: 06 May 2020 06:51 AM PDT I am using the Amazon Linux (1 I think, from the NAT instance ami) - and I have successfully installed Openconnect and can connect + use it perfectly fine using the below command: echo 'PASSWORD' | sudo env PATH="$PATH" openconnect SERVER --servercert pin-sha256:STUFF --authgroup 'ANYCONNECT-NET' -u 'USERNAME' --passwd-on-stdin I need to make this a command that runs on start, and will restart if it crashes (or I guess if the db server I need to use is unreachable) I wanted to use this scripthttps://confluence.jaytaala.com/display/TKB/Continuous+connection+to+Cisco+AnyConnect+VPN+with+linux+Openconnect but I could not get it to work, so I just tossed the above command into a .sh file, and every time I run it, I get the same error -- openconnect: No such file or directory -- I've tried it without the sudo env PATH="$PATH", without sudo, etc... I cannot figure out how to make this work. For the specific version of linux I am on, I cannot just apt-get or yum install openconnect, I followed this tutorial: https://medium.com/@iamrameshjonathan/install-and-configure-openconnect-v7-06-536d3e2feb0 [link] [comments] |
home disk constantly in use - normal? Posted: 06 May 2020 09:34 AM PDT So, I have followed these instructions to move my home directory to a new partition: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Partitioning/Home/Moving And it seems to be working great. I now have lots of space available, and everything seems to work just as it did before. But, I see the HD light flashing constantly. To me, that must mean the disk is in use. Coming from Windows, I'm quite gun-shy about this because there is always some hidden process touching the disk and making everything slow. Disk utilization "for no reason" is one of the things I was hoping to get away from by switching from Windows. So of course this worried me. Using System Monitor I see a constant stream of writes: And using iotop, I see the following: So, my question is - is this normal? Should I just ignore that the drive is constantly spinning? Or is it just "because that is the home drive, it's gonna be that way?" Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Make remote logon = local logon [Mint Cinnamon] Posted: 06 May 2020 09:16 AM PDT Liking Cinnamon, but having trouble with RDP. Cinnamon elevated privilege stuff (like quit button=>reboot, or right-click=>Open as Root) doesn't work with RDP. Works in the terminal, making launchers/adding nemo_actions & editing sudoers works too, but feels like there's something simple I'm overlooking. Is there a way to make Cinnamon treat my RDP login just like it does a local login? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2020 11:27 AM PDT I bought a Dell Vostro 7590 - Windows 10, comes with a 512 GB NVMe ssd. I need to keep Win10 around for a while, but have been using Ubuntu 18.04 for the last year so I went for dual boot. In order to get Linux to even see the ssd, it was necessary to change Bios settings to ACHI. Bios gave me a warning that it might cause a problem, but that seems like CYA. I rebooted. Linux can now see the drive/partitions, and I can still boot Win10. Before I actually install Linux should I be concerned about the warning msg? Why would a PC with a single drive be set to use the drive in a Raid mode? Side note - this is an EFI only Bios. Is there anything else I should check (Win partition was shrunk to provide space for Linux install) that might cause problems booting Win after I'm done? [link] [comments] |
Password incorrect when I just set the Password? Posted: 06 May 2020 08:55 AM PDT Hi all, I am currently running fedora 31 on my old pc. Whenever I create an account the account is set to expire at the EPOC date. I would like the default to be set to never. I run this command if I happen to create a new account #chage -E -1 <username> but it shouldn't automatically be set to EPOC date right? Is there a way to automatically set accounts to not expire without running the above command every time? Thanks in advance for any suggestions [link] [comments] |
Iterating through a list, and change only first occurrence of a string Posted: 06 May 2020 08:45 AM PDT Hey guys, So I'm facing a problem where I have a list and a text file with a string I have to replace with elements from the list. What I am trying to do is change the first occurrence of the string with the first value in the list. Once the value is changed, I want my script to loop and find the "new first occurrence" of the string and change it to the second value of the list. Example of what my text file could like like: With a list like: list=("cb:c6:e7:c8:13:64" "cb:c6:e7:c8:13:65" "cb:c6:e7:c8:13:66") I would like to iterate through the list so that the first occurrence of 'RANDOMSTRING' is changed with the first MAC in the list, the second occurrence of 'RANDOMSTRING' is changed with the second MAC address, and so on... So far, I can change the first occurrence using sed in a for loop: However, the loop seems to change the first 'RANDOMGSTRING' occurrence then loops and changes the same occurence. The resulting file shows as: I need help! Cheers in advance [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 May 2020 02:05 PM PDT I want to redirect the output of a program to a file with variable name and, at the same time redirect the possible error. This is the script so far: If I run the program knowing that it would make an error i get this in the terminal: I know why this error happens, but I want it to not appear on the terminal like that. Cant I use `2>` at the same time that `> `? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
execute a .desktop pipeline command from launcher? Posted: 06 May 2020 07:25 AM PDT Recently I started creating shortcuts to open folders from the launcher (I'm on Regolith) using .desktop files which I place in /usr/share/applications, and it works great. I tried doing the same thing for a terminal command I use to connect to my BT speakers: but it does not work (the terminal opens and closes quickly but the speakers are not being connected). Where did I go wrong? Is there a way to get the terminal automatically closed afterward? [link] [comments] |
Installing software difficulties Posted: 06 May 2020 07:16 AM PDT I am attempting to install SABnzbd, Sonarr, Radarr and have recently installed Ubuntu. I cannot figure out how to install the software. I have searched online and can't seem to find a definite guide to install software on Linux - it seems very confusing and quite overwhelming. I managed to install my VPN via gdei which was nice and easy. These other programs are proving to be quite a challenge however. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Where can I get some reliable informations for beginner? Posted: 06 May 2020 07:11 AM PDT (Hope I post this at the right place and ask no redundant question) I am a women from the countryside and I am not really comfortable with computers. I started a technical school for my engineering studies where we had some coding lessons (very little of C#, CSS, HTML, now I have a little C) and this helped me a lot to understand how computers are working (even if there is even more I don't know). So now my goal is to try Arch Linux, to find out more about computers and Linux. I have planned to find informations before (I already searched a lot) and then try Manjaro on VM or an older laptop I have. When I feel good with Manjaro, maybe I would try to install Arch Linux with the wiki. My question is, do you know some reliable resources, informations, videos, ... that would help understanding Arch Linux and computers and at the same time are rather easy to understand?
