Mini Metro 9/10 - A Very Clever Strategy Game [Amateur Review] Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:20 PM PDT So, if you haven't played this you may think it looks like a lame and uninspiring subway map sim. So did I. To the contrary, this is a surprisingly clever game that handles comfortably on a smartphone, is easy to pick up and play for minutes or hours, and encourages critical thinking without being burdensome or too complex. Despite being minimal with its design, concept and controls it can still be very challenging and the controls and mechanics can take a little getting used to. I can understand this could turn some people off. Overall, I was pleasantly confounded to find a game that was all of those things. For me, it's the perfect mobile strategy game and it will be something I keep coming back to. That is essentially my TLDR. If that doesn't interest you then probably move on. Or, read below if you still want to hear my opinion about the controls, playability, sound, visuals and strategy in more detail. To summarize what the game is, here is their own description in the 'about' section: "Mini Metro is a game about designing a subway map for a growing city. Draw lines between stations and start your trains running. As new stations open, redraw your lines to keep them efficient. Decide where to use your limited resources. How long can you keep the city moving?" Controls & Playability I don't think live action shooters and MOBAs work well on a mobile touch screen. Maybe I'm just old-school but I need the tactile response of a button press or a thumb-stick when I'm jumping and running sideways, trying to aim an assault rifle and popping health potions all while paying attention to a busy screen and HUD that's blocked by my fat fingers. I just don't think touch screens are strong here. The perfect mobile game to me involves simple touch controls that don't involve too much happening at once and everything I need to see being clearly visible and unobstructed. Mini metro does a fine job. Throughout the game there is only a handful of maneuvers you'll ever have to do and they can all be done with a single finger. Whether you're extending a train line, adding a carriage to a train or removing a line altogether, you just press, drag and release. The game is also paced quite well so you'll often have time between actions to think a bit about what you're doing. For an RTS, your fingers spend very little time blocking screen-space. When I began playing I went straight in without reading the game's guide, and just had the quick introductory tutorial to get me started (which I should stress, does not tell you everything you can do). I found that things were quite easy to pick up and most of the mechanics were fairly intuitive once you got the gist of things. Issues arise when you get very large subway systems. Some systems will have 7 overlapping lines running to dozens of stations, with more being added every few seconds. As the system expands the screen zooms out and things get smaller and smaller. To be fair, this is part of the games appeal and challenge, but at this point you will find most the issues with the game will surface. You'll find yourself fighting with the controls a bit as you grab the wrong lines, grab lines when you meant to grab the train on the line and straight-up miss things that were at the edge of the screen causing an early game over (FYI, I'm playing on a 6" screen). This can get frustrating. The issue of making small objects easy to grab is difficult to solve without harming the charming minimalist aesthetic of the game. Playing on a tablet will probably help. If you don't have one, you might just need to get good. Overall I was pretty impressed. As a casual player this does a very good job of being able to let you do a lot while keeping things very simple. You can give it a try going in blind like I did as it gives a real sense of learning and progression, but definitely read the game's instructions when you start to get stuck. If you're the type that really wants to break high-scores and min-max very late into the game, you'll have difficulty with controls on a smaller screen. Sound I won't say a lot here as I spent most of my playtime in a hospital ward and was sharing space with others, without headphones. I played with the volume very low. My overall sense was that the sound effects were very peaceful and zen - perfect for this kind of strategy game and it matches the aesthetic of the game well. Some sound effects sounded very similar to some mobile notification tones which was a little annoying, but it was OK. I found that various sound effects did a good job of communicating things to the player that were happening on-screen, and this helps when things get very stretched out. If you're finding things are getting way to busy sound effects wise you'll find a 'Minimal' option for audio in the settings. This removes everything that isn't necessary and keeps only what communicates information to you as a player. I wish I knew about this sooner! Overall good job here. Visuals The visuals of the game are all very crisp and clean and have a minimalist style inspired by most city metro maps. I really found no problems here; it's well polished and is nice to look at for long periods of time. I couldn't spot any buggy graphic issues throughout my playtime, and only met with issues when things started to get shrink. There are visual cues communicating things to the player when a new station appears or a station gets overloaded with players and sometimes these were easy to miss. I would appreciate if they would be a little more pronounced. They also included nice settings such as a night mode and colour-blind mode, which is very thoughtful! Strategy This was the aspect I was most impressed by. I've played plenty of mobile strategy games and it seems it's a difficult task to get all the ingredients in one package. Some strategy games will invent simple and charming mechanics yet lack any depth. Some will have great depth but will involve steep learning curves and are unplayable without reading War and Peace. Some might even have simple mechanics and approachable depth, but will have moments were you're sat scratching your head going absolutely nowhere for half an hour. If you love a good strategy game like I do, you know what I'm talking about. Mini Metro stands out as getting most of that stuff right. The concept of the game is quite straightforward: draw lines between stations to make your system move passengers as efficient as possible. The beauty in this is that challenge lies within the goal of efficiency, not the drawing of lines or anything else. Technically any system that touches every station will work, but there's a serious knack to getting it perfect. Over the span of several hours I found myself gradually learning, adapting and coming up with ideas. I went from getting 450 passengers through the first stage, London, on my first play-through to 1400 when I revisited after a couple of hours of playtime. While my mind was working hard to come up with things, there weren't any 'stuck' moments where I wasn't moving forward, learning things and developing strategies. I found myself coming up with my own rules and principles, dos and don'ts as things succeeded and failed. Well done to the developers for the rare feat of getting that stuff right. Summary Don't judge a book by it's cover. If you're after a challenging and unique strategy experience that will get you thinking without being a chore this is a fantastic choice. The audio and graphics are delightful and really add to the experience. Unfortunately playability suffers once a map sprawls out and shrinks down, but doesn't ultimately ruin the experience. It's well worth the cost their selling it for if you're into strategy games. I know people like to see ratings so I gave it a 9/10. This reflects a sense of my overall enjoyment from the game. I felt it could be a 10 if some of those issues in large systems were ironed out. Thanks for taking the time to read all this. I've just been in surgery so with a lot of time to kill in hospital I gave Mini Metro a go, available here on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. I thought I might weigh in my opinion and leave a review as when a game has a price tag I like to know a little before I buy! Yes, its only like $1.00 but its MY dollar and I hate to buy anything and find myself disappointed. I hope I helped you decide if this game is for you. I would be glad to hear your thoughts and opinions. Be safe, wash your hands and keep well! [link] [comments]

[REQUEST] Anybody know of some good multiplayer board/strategy games for 4+ people? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 09:53 PM PDT This might be a long shot, but does anybody know of some good multiplayer board/strategy games that 4+ people can play together? Ideally they'd be asynchronous or turn-based, but honestly we'll take what we can get. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Apr 2020 05:23 PM PDT So, after a very long time, I suddenly got the craving to play Piano Tiles again. Only, the "original" Piano Tiles 2 isn't available on Google Play anymore, and apparently they changed the songs from endless to, well, basically just the song a single time. Do any of you know around which update this was introduced? Hoping to find an apk of an older version. [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Apr 2020 06:04 PM PDT Hey guys, So the texting gets quite boring during this quarantine time, therefore me and this girl have been playing 8-ball pool, uno and skribbl.io for the past week. However, I want to find us a new game to play. You know, something that is not too complicated, fun and maybe a little bit competetive. Any suggestions? The more recommendations the better. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
[REQUEST] Free and small sized android games to pass time Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:51 PM PDT It'd be preferable if they're under 100mb in size and offline and free, in other words: mobile data and pocket friendly. I play Odyssey and Vector, although the latter doesn't have much replay value once you finish it. [link] [comments]

[REQUEST] Need some android game suggestions similar to clash of clans Posted: 01 Apr 2020 10:01 AM PDT As most people in the world, I am also staying at home due to covid 19. I don't have a console or a pc so I do watch movies and play one game with my mobile. So I need some more game suggestions. Something simple like clash of clans that I am playing right now. Don't want games like cod or pubg. Something simpler. So what are your suggestions. You gamers should know a lot about these. Free from playstore. I would really love an offline game that you have to complete missions but your whole body should be seen. You have to invade an island or something like that. Also similar games to Nintendo game boy. [link] [comments]
[REQUEST] Game to play with your kid remotely? Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:19 PM PDT Are there any good family games that a parent could play against their child (both on different devices)? Something similar to the little games on Facebook Messenger - basic for a 7 year old but still pretty fun and maybe even social (being able to chat still). It could be a sports game, adventure game, cartoon game etc. Ideally it would be free and you can play against/with another player online remotely. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
